Abstract: Papers of Edith Head, a well known motion picture costume designer. Watercolor, pen and ink, and pencil sketches, many bearing notes on fabric and costs, comprise the majority of the collection. In addition to designs for All About Eve (20th Century-Fox, 1950), The Five Pennies (Paramount, 1959), Love With a Proper Stranger (Paramount, 1963), Pepe (Columbia, 1960), Sabrina (Paramount, 1954), and To Catch a Thief (Paramount, 1955), all of which received Academy awards or nominations for costuming, there are examples of her work for Artists and Models (Paramount, 1955), Breakfast at Tiffany's (Paramount, 1961), Come Blow Your Horn (Paramount, 1963), The Pleasure of His Company (Paramount, 1956), and Wives and Lovers (Paramount, 1963). Also included in the collection are some miscellaneous special designs, portions of her book The Dress Doctor (1959), and related correspondence, biographical clippings, and articles.

Abstract: Records of an advisory committee appointed by Governor Knowles in 1968 to advise the Bureau of Comprehensive Health Planning of the Department of Health and Social Services on comprehensive health planning matters. In 1971 the council's functions were assumed by the Health Policy and Program Council, which in turn was replaced in 1973 by the Health Policy Council. Included are minutes of the council and its six subcommittees and other meeting materials, recommendations, and information about members.

Abstract: Records, mainly 1973-1983, of a non-profit health organization established in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1971 from a predecessor organization, the Women's Health Collective. Health Writers provided health advocacy, education, and referral services to the community, and it published the nationally-circulated Health Newsletter and various special publications. Included in the collection are fragmentary core organizational, financial, and staff records; activity records; clippings and news releases; and files on related organizations such as the Madison Sustaining Fund (MSF) Foundation, which provided a major share of Health Writers' funding. Small subject files document organizational activities such as the Patients' Bill of Rights and the Hill-Burton Act.

Abstract: Papers, 1963-1997 (mainly 1964, 1991-1995), of author William Heath consisting of his research files and drafts of his work, The Children Bob Moses Led, an historical novel focusing on Freedom Summer, 1964. The bulk of the collection consists of the various drafts and notes that document Heath's writing process. Also included are orientation schedules and letters written by Freedom Summer volunteers who traveled to Mississippi in the summer of 1964 to assist with African American voter registration. Their letters reflect their experiences living with African American families as well as their exposure to the violence directed at African Americans living in McComb and Amite Counties.

Abstract: Torsten R. Hedengren was born in Finland and came to the United States in 1913. After two years in New York, he was hired by Nordberg Manufacturing Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as a diesel design engineer. He fostered Scandinavian and U.S. yachting interests and was involved in bringing the Scandinavian Gold Cup Race to the United States in 1927. Most of this collection contains correspondence, documents and drafts relating to Hedengren’s research on the history of the Queen’s Cup.

Abstract: Papers of a broadcasting executive who served NBC successively as vice-president in charge of its stations, planning and development, and integrated services departments. Correspondence, 1926-1962, chiefly concerns Broadcast Pioneers, the National Association of Broadcasters, the Chicago Daily News, and WMAQ. The limited NBC material is best for the inception of television during the late 1940's. Also present are speeches and articles, clippings, memorabilia, a transcript of an oral history interview, and a number of NBC reports, including some by Hedges. Outside interests are reflected in several folders. Material pertaining to Broadcast Pioneers includes minutes, printed matter, issues of the group's in-house organ, and material on its history project. Of special interest is Hedges' interview with John F. Royal and the inventories of the project's collection. Information on the NAB, of which Hedges was a founding member, includes a constitution and by-laws, a proposed code of fair competition, convention programs, and a handbook.

Abstract: Papers of a Milwaukee industrialist and former Republican governor who served in elective office from 1938 through 1942. The papers chiefly relate to Heil's public career and consist of chronologically-arranged correspondence, speeches, press releases, campaign briefing books, microfilmed biographical clippings, memorabilia, photographs, and other miscellany. Although much of the correspondence is routine, there are several letters from prominent individuals such as Frank Knox, Frances Perkins, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harold Stassen, Henry L. Stimson, Alexander Wiley, and Wendell L. Willkie.

Abstract: Papers and photographs pertaining to the career Air Force service of Colonel Donald L. Heiliger, a Madison, Wisconsin native who served as a pilot in Vietnam, was shot down and held as a prisoner for six years, and served as an air attache' to several different countries. The collection is comprised of personal letters, invitations, correspondence, flight records, training materials, service records, military papers, certificates, information articles, and photographs documenting Heiliger's entire Air Force career. The majority of manuscripts pertain to his time as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. Heiliger was captured in 1967 after ejecting from his F-105 Thunderchief that had been hit by ground fire while flying a bombing mission over North Vietnam. Included are a few letters written by Heiliger to his parents and to his first wife, Carol, during his time as a POW. There are also letters written by Heiliger's mother to him while he was a prisoner. There is correspondence his parents received from government agencies and private organizations over Heiliger's status as a POW and efforts to have him released. Also found is a large collection of correspondence Heiliger received after his return home in 1973, mainly from people who had worn his name on POW remembrance bracelets. Also included are cards and welcome home signs that were made by Wisconsin schoolchildren and Madison residents. Other manuscripts pertaining to his POW time include materials pertaining to his reorientation program after his release, regulations and instructions regarding mailing items to POWs, and articles collected by his parents pertaining to the Vietnam War and American prisoners. There is also a large collection of materials pertaining to his post-Vietnam service as an air attache' with Uruguay, Chile, and Israel. Included are military papers and reports from his time spent working with each country, along with a large collection of personal invitations and thank you letters he received. Other manuscripts from his service include military papers and reports from his ROTC training and his service as a navigations instructor, flight records spanning his entire career, medical evaluations, and various certificates and promotion-related documents. Photographs in the collection also cover his entire service. Included are group images from his ROTC and Air Force navigation training classes, a few images of Heiliger posing next to an F-105, and a group image of he and his fellow pilots on nuclear alert while stationed in South Korea. Images from his attache' service include group photographs at events, Heiliger posing with various United States Air Force generals, and some group images from his assignments abroad. Of particular interest is a photograph taken during the signing of the first agreement between the United States Air Force and the Israeli Air Force. A few images of 9/11 attack on the Pentagon round out the photographs. Also included in the collection is a visual recording of a press conference given by Heiliger after release and return to the United States in 1973. The film shows Heiliger answering questions about his time in prison, his thoughts about the war protesters, and how he was adjusting back into everyday life. The end of the film is comprised of footage taken of Heiliger landing at an airport and meeting his parents.

Abstract: Papers of Lea Heine, a resident of Madison, Wisconsin, who served as a VISTA volunteer teacher in Lancaster, South Carolina. The core of the collection is a tape-recorded autobiography which contains information on her youth in post-World War I Germany and later life in Madison during the Depression, as well as her experiences as a VISTA volunteer. References to her volunteer activities are bolstered by diaries; students' work; printed copies of Me, a booklet she prepared utilizing a pupil's drawings which was used by VISTA as a recruiting tool; drafts of unpublished writings; a tape recording of an interview on the Today program about Me; and an additional tape recording and a home movie she made in Lancaster.

Abstract: Papers of Joseph Helfert, the editor of the Beaver Dam (Wisconsin) Daily Citizen and active participant in the civic and religious life of his community. The collection includes letters, postcards, clippings, and V-Mail sent to Helfert and his wife by Beaver Dam servicemen during World War II for sharing with the community. The correspondents document how the soldiers felt about army life and include information on officers and enlisted men, basic training and overseas duty in Europe and the Pacific, and the soldiers’ religious activities, promotions, jobs, units, and bases where stationed. The collection also includes material from the American Newspaper Publishers Association and the offices of censorship and war information dealing with propaganda and the code of wartime practices for the press.

Abstract: Personal correspondence, speeches and notes, oral history interviews, labor history teaching materials, and subject files of Ralph Helstein, a long-time progressive leader and president of the United Packinghouse Workers of America. Correspondence documents his private law practice (1942-1964), work as general counsel of the Packinghouse Workers Organizing Committee and as president of the UPWA (1946-1968), and activities and speaking engagements outside the labor movement and after his retirement with organizations such as Israel Histadrut, the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee, and the Committee for Rural Democracy in Crystal City, Texas. There are also by-laws, minutes, and financial reports of the Rath Packing Company collected while Helstein was a member of the company's board of directors; documents about an internal investigation prompted by A.T. Stephen's charges in 1958 of Communist influence within the UPWA; and a notebook used by Helstein during the contract bargaining in the 1960s. Prominent correspondents include Saul Alinsky, Patrick Gorman, Michael Harrington, Hubert H. Humphrey, Eppie Lederer (Ann Landers), Carey McWilliams, George Meany, Leslie Orear, and Edwin Witte.

Abstract: Papers of Gilbert Hemsley, a lighting designer, production manager, and University of Wisconsin theater and drama professor. The collection consists primarily of production files and includes technical materials for a variety of ballet, dance, opera, theater, and special productions. Some were the result of cultural exchanges with countries such as China, the Soviet Union, and Cuba. Personal, academic, and professional files comprise the remainder of the papers. The collection includes materials from Hemsley's work with the American Ballet Theatre, Bolshoi Ballet, National Ballet of Cuba, Stuttgart Ballet, Wisconsin Ballet Company, Boston Opera Company, Houston Grand Opera, Metropolitan Opera Company, New York City Opera, The Performing Arts Company of the People's Republic of China, and many other performing companies. Theater files are primarily from productions in Madison, Wisconsin, and in numerous regional theaters across the country. Among the special productions are Jimmy Carter's 1976 inaugural ball and an industrial show by Oldsmobile.

Abstract: Papers of a former state senator (1957-1961) and lobbyist from Milwaukee, primarily consisting of constituent correspondence. Included are many letters expressing views on issues of the 1957 and 1959 sessions such as income tax withholding, billboard controls, mental health, facilities for the mental retarded, and released time for religious education. Correspondence with other legislators and other political leaders is limited and includes exchanges with Claude Jasper, Robert Knowles, Warren Knowles, Philip G. Kuehn, and Vernon Thomson. These letters relate to both legislation and to electoral politics, 1957-1960. Also included are a few bill drafts and copies of speeches. There are no files on Hendee's career as a registered lobbyist.

Abstract: Papers, 1937-2001, of Elmer Henderson, a Baltimore native and lawyer who served on Roosevelt's Fair Employment Practices Committee (FEPC) (1941-1948) which was responsible for integrating black workers into war industries. The bulk of the collection relates to Henderson's work with the FEPC, principally his role as a regional director in Chicago (1942-1946). Also included are materials from Henderson's work with the Illinois State Commission on the Condition of the Urban Colored population, the American Council on Human Rights (ACHR), and political involvement with the Democratic National Committee and Stevenson's 1956 presidential campaign with regard to African-American issues.

Abstract: Papers of an NBC news commentator and newspaper journalist, consisting chiefly of material for his radio program Three Star Extra, which was sponsored by the Sun Oil Company. Included are microfilmed scripts and editorials written by Henle, Ned Brooks, Charles T. Lucey, Felix Morley, Merrill Mueller, Edward Tomlinson, Russ Ward, Albert L. Warner, and others, 1956-1965; summary indexes, 1950-1965; fan mail, 1959-1965; and clippings. Spare documentation provided by the textual material for the pre-1956 broadcasts is supplemented by 100 recordings. Other tapes and discs include Presidential news conferences and addresses, speeches by prominent Americans, and Congressional hearings. The remainder of the collection consists of personal correspondence, financial records, and social papers. The correspondence is representative of Henle's wide political and diplomatic acquaintance and includes letters from Alben W. Barkley, Mark W. Clark, Gerald R. Ford, J. Edgar Hoover, Herbert Hoover, Hubert H. Humphrey, Richard M. Nixon, J. Howard Pew, and Archibald Roosevelt.

Abstract: Papers of an FCC commissioner (1962-1963) and chairman (1963-1966), who succeeded and carried on the policies and practices of Newton N. Minow. Correspondence, which dates primarily from Henry's tenure on the FCC, comprises 76 boxes and includes letters, memoranda, reports, working papers, speech drafts, and transcripts of testimony. The bulk of the correspondence is to or from individuals, organizations, and companies in broadcasting and the communications industry rather than the public at large. Well represented topics include regulation of cable television, the FCC's “fairness doctrine,” attempts to regulate television commercials, the Communications Satellite Corporation, limitations on multiple station ownership, network programming for local stations, AT&T, and the internal operation of the commission. The remainder of the collection is composed of final drafts of speeches, a film and tapes of several of these speeches and interviews, speeches by other individuals concerning mass communications, and five boxes of reference clippings.

Abstract: The papers of Leon Srabian Herald (1896-1976), an Armenian-American poet who wrote the first English-language text about the Armenian Genocide by an Armenian author. The book, titled "This Waking Hour" was Herald's first book, after publishing poems and short stories in a number of journals and magazines. His papers include numerous drafts of poems; manuscripts on a variety of topics including cosmology and sciences; correspondence between Herald and publishers, friends, other poets, and family; and dozens of memo-books with Herald's drafts. Some personal effects from Herald, including correspondence about his veteran status, reviews and newspaper clippings, and photographs of Herald, are also included. Individually cataloged titles with marginalia from Herald can be found in the UW Madison library catalog under the call number "Coll. E".

Abstract: Papers of Elizabeth Herfurth, a Madison, Wisconsin, teacher, organizer and president of the Teachers' Retirement Fund Association, and secretary of the board of trustees to administer the fund. The correspondence shows the organization of the drive for the passage of the law, attitudes toward it, queries concerning its administration, rulings of the attorney general, and efforts to repeal and amend the law. With these are drafts of the bill, petitions, and questionnaires, and material on pension laws in other states.

Abstract: Papers relating to Herfurth's historical study of the bronze plaque celebrating academic freedom presented to the University by the Class of 1910. Correspondence with participants in the five-year controversy over the memorial includes letters from F. Ryan Duffy and other student leaders relating to their efforts to have the plaque accepted by the regents, their achievement of the goal in 1915, and the way in which presentation of the plaque was connected with progressive politics and with the issue of academic freedom raised by the visit of Emma Goldman to the campus in 1910. Copies of letters from Charles Van Hise to Lincoln Steffens, 1908-1909, and information on Steffens' role in the selection of the motto are included, as well as letters from the regents to members of the Class of 1910, a typescript of source materials collected by Herfurth on the issue, and a manuscript article entitled “Sifting and Winnowing.”

Abstract: Harry J. Hirshheimer was born in La Crosse in 1871. The son of prominent La Crosse businessman, Hirshheimer was well known as a local historian. He collaborated with Albert H. Sanford in writing A History of La Crosse 1841-1900, and died in 1952, shortly after the book’s publication. These papers constitute materials collected by Hirshheimer while working on his book, The History of La Crosse 1841-1900, and while doing research for his radio broadcasts on local history and his papers presented to the La Crosse County Historical Society.

Photocopied clipping scrapbooks are the chief documentation of Hershey's reporting during World War I and II. The script materials primarily document his work for Vitaphone Studio. Also included are files on Hershey's proposed films, plays, books, and other writings, as well as his public relations work and correspondence related to his leadership of the Overseas Press Club.

Extensive correspondence provides insights and commentary on academic life at a major university and demonstrates the inter-relationships of the national community of historians. Among the correspondents are many scholars and former students including several of the most prominent American historians of a generation. Abstract: Papers of B.F. Heuston, a Trempealeau County, Wisconsin lumberman, land speculator, general store owner, and county official, including correspondence (1850-89), diaries (1862-78), account books (1849-60, 1864-79), reminiscences, and historical notes on Trempealeau County. Most of the correspondence concerns Heuston's Civil War service with Co. C, 22nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The Civil War letters and diaries describe the 22nd Regiment's surroundings in Tennessee, Georgia, South and North Carolina, and Virginia; the Atlanta Campaign and Sherman's march through Georgia; Heuston's wounding at Resaca and subsequent stays in army hospitals, especially at Camp Chase General Hospital (Columbus, Ohio); and racial and abolitionist concerns, including the arrest of the 22nd Regiment's officers for refusing to return slaves, Heuston's teaching experiences in a Negro school (1863), and controversies about arming Blacks, Northern education, and enlistment of Blacks. Trempealeau County materials include a typewritten history (1890), including biographical sketches of early settlers and landowners; and a typescript concerning an old French post near Trempealeau. Also includes pages for the “Fonetik Longhand Writer,” “The pronouncing system of B.F. Heuston,” and handwritten articles on temperance, prohibition, the Pan American railroad, and “The Negro problem” (1890).

Abstract: Papers of Joseph Hewitt, an itinerant minister of the Primitive Methodist Connexion in southwestern Wisconsin, and his daughter Lydia. Joseph's papers include correspondence, ministerial papers, and diaries, 1848-1885, recording his travels, statistics on the churches he served, discussions of doctrine and other ministers, and observations on the Civil War and Lincoln's assassination. Lydia's diaries, 1880-1885, record daily activities and her reactions to the progressive consumption which eventually caused her death.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1934-1980, of Wisconsin labor leader Charles Heymanns, which document his organizing work (1937-1963) for the Wisconsin AFL and later for the AFL-CIO, and two lengthy strikes at the Kohler Company. In addition to his weekly organizer's reports, the collection includes correspondence, scrapbooks (only available on microfilm), photographs, minutes, appeals for donations, financial records, picket rolls, and other records from the strike (1934-1941) of Federal Labor Union 18545 against the Kohler Company. Concerning the 1954-1965 strike of UAW-CIO Local 833, there are scrapbooks, correspondence as director of Region XII of the AFL-CIO, daily strike bulletins, and material of the Kohler Workers Association, the company union. The subject files include correspondence, clippings, minutes, and other materials pertaining to varied individuals, topics and organizations such as the American Party, Andrew Biemiller, the presidential candidacy of Henry M. Jackson, various state and regional COPE committees, the Sheboygan County Labor Council, the Milwaukee County Labor Council, the La Crosse Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman, and the organization of migrant farm workers in Wisconsin by Obreros Unidos.
