Huber, Henry A., 1869-1933 Title: Henry A. Huber Papers, 1895-1933

Abstract: Papers of Henry A. Huber, a Stoughton, Wisconsin attorney; Progressive Republican member of the Assembly, 1904-1906, and Senate, 1913-1925; and lieutenant governor, 1925-1933. Huber is best known for his association with the La Follette Progressives and for his authorship of the 1913 Huber Law which authorized the work release of jailed prisoners. Correspondence relating to Huber's years in the legislature is incomplete, with service on the Senate Judiciary Committee in 1919 being most extensive. Coverage becomes more comprehensive in 1924, with incoming and outgoing letters relating to his support for the independent Presidential candidacy of Robert M. La Follette, Sr. and his own tenure as lieutenant governor. Topics in the correspondence and elsewhere in the collection are chain stores, initiative and referenda, Prohibition, and small bank loans. Electoral politics is also represented in the correspondence, as well as in files of party platforms, campaign speeches, press releases for Huber and other candidates, and legal documents about his alleged violations of the Wisconsin Corrupt Practices Act. About Huber's Stoughton law practice there are letterbooks of outgoing correspondence, 1901-1926; cashbooks and ledgers; and a volume concerning his work as court commissioner, also at Stoughton, for the Dane County Circuit Court. This volume not only includes standard docket information, but also Huber's orders, 1906-1932. Speeches and writings include remarks to general audiences as well as legislative floor remarks and rulings and “War Hysteria,” an unpublished manuscript about Senator La Follette and his opposition to World War I. In addition, there is a clipping scrapbook, 1928-1930, and a budget prepared by the State Board of Public Affairs that includes detailed information about state expenditures and revenue estimates, 1909-1915.

Abstract: Personal and family papers preserved by Mary Huesmann Green, Chicago, Illinois, largely concerning her ancestors in the Huesmann, Baldwin, Bonner, and Mercer families of Virginia and Ohio. The papers consist of genealogical charts and notes, newsclippings of obituaries, letters and other documents, photographs, diaries (1856-1857) of J. W. Baldwin, and diaries kept by Mary Green while traveling in Europe and South America. The letters and diaries mainly concern personal activities of various family members.

Abstract: Papers of Merlin Hull, a Wisconsin politician and newspaper editor-publisher, consisting of chronologically-arranged correspondence which relate to his career as assemblyman, 1909-1909; secretary of state, 1917-1921; and congressman, 1929-1931 and 1934-1953; and to his operation of the Jackson County Banner-Journal. A remarkably complete set of business records (1856-1926) relate to the operation of the Banner prior to its consolidation with Hull's Journal. Miscellaneous materials include minutes of the Joint Committee on Finance and the State Board of Public Affairs and political material from Hull's campaigns in 1914 and 1916. Also includes photographs from his political career as well as some family photographs.

Abstract: Formed in 1993, the Human Rights League (HRL) strove "to advance the political interests of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgendered in the metropolitan Milwaukee area by influencing local, state, and national politics, legislation, and public policy." HRL carried out its work through four standing committees: Public Information, Membership and Funding, National Coming Out Day, and Legislative and Public Policy. HRL surveyed electoral candidates for their positions on LGBT issues; recommended and endorsed candidates for local, state, and national elections; held annual receptions at which members of the LGBT community met with public officials; and distributed political information. In 1997, HRL formed a political action committee to raise and distribute funds in support of pro-LGBT candidates. HRL worked with the Milwaukee Police Department to train police recruits on LGBT issues. It also held two annual award programs--the Cream City Brick Awards and the National Coming Out Day Awards--that recognized the contributions of LGBT and pro-LGBT individuals, businesses, and organizations to the community.

Abstract: The Phyllis Walsh papers (1975-2009) consist of materials about "Hummingbird: Magazine of the Short Poem" from the magazine's first editor, Phyllis Walsh (1928-2012). The collection mainly includes correspondence between Walsh and other poets, notably Cid Corman. There is also correspondence and invoices with businesses and bookstores, drafts and manuscripts of other works published by the Hummingbird Press, and poem submissions for various volumes of the magazine. Also included in this collection are numerous original poems, drafts and notes of manuscripts, submissions and correspondence to other magazines and presses, and an early scrapbook prior to the start of the Hummingbird Presspoems.

Abstract: Papers of Humphrey, his family, and the Century Pen Company, Whitewater, Wis., a manufacturer of fountain pens, which he founded in 1892 and which dissolved in 1938. Company records include incorporation papers, annual and semi-annual financial reports that document the decline of the company, and minutes of the Board of Directors' and stockholders' meetings. Of interest in the family papers is a letter dated May 7, 1899 to Humphrey from his brother E. P. Humphrey in Fort San Carlos, Nicaragua, on the difficulty involved in transportation and communication between the United States and Latin America before the construction of the Panama Canal. Also included is correspondence relating to the Whitewater Rifle Club of which Heywood C. Humphrey was secretary.

Abstract: Collection consists mainly of minutes, correspondence, memos, annual and research reports, newsclippings and press releases which document the Hunger Task Force of Milwaukee's (HTFM) mission to prevent hunger and malnutrition by providing food to people in need and by promoting social policies to achieve the permanent end of hunger. The Task Force's work with local, state, and national groups, such as the Milwaukee Food Stamp Coalition and USDA/Americorps' Anti-Hunger Project, is documented within the records. Information on HTFM's coordination of the Emergency Food Pantry Network and the Hunger Action Network and its program developments, such as the Infant Nutrition Project and the School Breakfast Expansion Project are also in the records. Other materials include videos produced by HTFM, photographs of people and events, education and advocacy efforts, and various brochures and fact sheets.

This collection includes a variety of materials mostly from his work with those commissions.

The fund served as philanthropic support for social action groups, including the New Party, Sustainable Long Island, and Sustainable Milwaukee. Hunter was highly involved with such groups throughout his life. The papers consist of financial records, correspondence, research papers, proposals, and mailings, all of which largely pertain to Hunter and the groups with which he worked. Hunter’s personal files include day planners, general correspondence, biographical materials, and papers from the dedication of a building in his name.

Abstract: Papers of a reporter and associate editor of the Madison, Wisconsin, Capital Times, consisting of scattered correspondence, writings, and subject files. Bylined articles from the Capital Times have been discarded because the paper is available on microfilm. The collection does include some free-lance articles and drafts of articles written as a stringer for the New York Times. Dating chiefly from the late 1960s and early 1970s, these articles deal with state politics and student unrest at the University of Wisconsin. Subject files include documentation of Hunter's well-known Declaration of Independence petition article in 1951 and his interest in the Civil War. Prominent correspondents include William F. Buckley, Jr., Otto Eisenschiml, Hubert H. Humphrey, C. Estes Kefauver, John F. Kennedy, Edward P. Morgan, Max Otto, William Proxmire, Harlow Shapley, and Norman M. Thomas.

Abstract: The papers and photographs of Paul F. Hunter, Jr., a Madison resident who served as a pilot, first in the Royal Canadian Air Force (R.C.A.F.) and later in the United States Army Air Force, during World War II. Several letters of reference document his application to the R.C.A.F. in early 1941. Personal military records provide details about his service, including flight records, orders, passes, and time and sequence cards. Written requests to transfer into the United States Army Air Force and a separation record show how his Canadian service ended. Several letters from fellow R.C.A.F. pilots provide news of mutual acquaintances and describe the conditions at various bases while scattered correspondence from his father describe the activities of the local Rotary Club. Newspaper clippings include descriptions Hunter's service, his visit home circa 1943, and several speaking engagements in the Madison area. Documents from the U.S. military show his desire to transfer from the R.C.A.F. two years before it happened. A permit from his local draft board to depart the United States in 1941 is a unique and interesting document since Hunter used the permit to enlist in the Canadian military. The majority of the materials provide details about his service such as pay records, certificates of appointment and service, military property clearance forms, and orders. Individual flight records and post-flying regulation questionnaires give a little detail about his role as a pilot toward the end of World War II. Hunter also collected samples of blank stationary used by military forces. The collection includes Royal Canadian Air Force stationary with matching envelope, tan stationary with humorous graphic of soldier boys and officer, and letterhead identified as the Officers' Club & Hostel (YMCA) out of Manchester, England. Also found are stationary forms from the Egyptian Postal Administration and blank V-mail forms. Photographs include shots of Hunter wearing both an R.C.A.F. uniform and a U.S. Air Force uniform in posed studio shots and candid pictures with family and friends.

Abstract: Correspondence, radio scripts, and recordings of the broadcaster who co-anchored NBC's evening news from 1956 to 1970. The correspondence includes fan mail written primarily in response to issues discussed on Outlook and Huntley-Brinkley Report, together with some letters concerning more general professional matters. The letters reflect a broad spectrum of public opinion on issues such as race relations, foreign policy and the Vietnam conflict, the 1967 AFTRA strike, and aspects of broadcasting. Individualized replies from Huntley are scattered through the collection. Prominent correspondents include Orson Bean, Homer E. Capehart, Bennett Cerf, C. Douglas Dillon, Will Durant, Abba Eban, Orville E. Freeman, Dave Garroway, David Sarnoff, and Walter D. Scott. Of the scripts, coverage of Perspective on the News and Emphasis is best. On tape are broadcast editorials recorded for Horizons Communications Corporation after his retirement.

Abstract: Papers of Edwin Hurlbut, a Wisconsin editor and attorney involved in the Free Soil party and the beginnings of the Republican Party. Included are correspondence, legal documents, and printed material, including an 1856 platform of Wisconsin's American Party, Sons of Temperance material, a temperance song book, and the 1858 Grand Chapter Proceedings of the Royal Arch Masons. Also present is brief information on Hurlbut's Civil War service, state militia service, and as aide to the Commander in Chief.

Abstract: Papers of Paul O. Husting, a Wisconsin liberal Democratic legislator and United States Senator (1915-1917) comprising correspondence, speeches, news clippings, and other records. The material on Husting's senatorial career includes correspondence on the primary and general election campaigns of 1914, and post-election correspondence with Joseph E. Davies, Albert S. Burleson, and others concerning patronage, including many letters regarding Wisconsin post office appointments, besides quantities from miscellaneous job seekers. Of significance is the material relating to German language newspapers and the attitude of German-American citizens in Wisconsin toward the Wilson administration. Other subjects include the campaign of 1916, neutrality legislation and foreign policy, preparedness, Democratic state politics in general, and prohibition, including a letter on the subject from William T. Evjue. Several letters from members of the Wisconsin Loyalty Legion late in 1917 comment on working-class morale and attitudes toward the war. Other items include correspondence, data, and drafts of bills, 1909-1913, concerning the conservation movement in Wisconsin--forest reserve lands, navigable waters, riparian rights, and the control of water power--together with reports of hearings, 1909-1910, conducted by the Wisconsin legislative committee on water powers, forestry, and drainage.

Abstract: Papers, 1950-1999 (bulk 1996-1999), of Milwaukee reporter and Pulitzer Prize winner Margo Huston, documenting her career in journalism at the Waukesha Freeman and the Milwaukee Journal. Huston also served two terms on the National News Council, a watchdog organization that issued opinions on complaints involving the national media. The bulk of the collection contains information about the implementation of the welfare reform program Wisconsin Works (W-2) in Milwaukee County, with an emphasis on childcare issues.
