Abstract: Papers of Gustave Buchen, a Republican Wisconsin state senator from 1942-1951, including mostly correspondence, 1941-1951; an autobiography; clippings, 1943-1947; speeches, 1915-1949; committee reports; and an unfinished manuscript about the Kettle Moraine State Forest. The correspondence concerns Buchen's sponsorship of several bills on mental health and conservation. There are also some letters pertaining to his book Historic Sheboygan County, published in 1944.

Abstract: Papers of an author and humorist, consisting of correspondence and book and column manuscripts. The early correspondence, which dates from the period when Buchwald was a foreign correspondent, is limited and chiefly comprised of letters from celebrities such as Bernard Baruch, Jack Benny, Irving Berlin, Al Capp, Maurice Chevalier, C. Douglas Dillon, Rube Goldberg, Princess Grace of Monaco, Helen Hayes, George S. Kaufman, Walter Lippmann, Clare Boothe Luce, Groucho Marx, W. Somerset Maugham, Robert Moses, Edward R. Murrow, James Reston, William Saroyan, and Joseph N. Welch. The post-1962 correspondence consists entirely of sampled reader mail. Four of Buchwald's books, Don't Forget to Write (1960), How Much Is That in Dollars? (1961), Is It Safe to Drink the Water? (1962), and I Chose Capitol Punishment (1963), are represented in the collection by manuscript drafts, as are some syndicated columns, 1962-1969.

Abstract: Papers, 1916-1970 (mainly 1930-1959), of Helen Buckler, a freelance journalist and author whose research interests included issues relating to women, civil rights, social welfare, race relations, aviation, personalities, travel, and gastronomy. The collection includes personal and professional correspondence; undergraduate class work; newspaper clippings of her published works; freelance writing files; manuscripts; promotional materials from her work at the National Council of Negro Women, Camp Fire Girls, and other nonprofits; photographs; and research files and notes. She published two well-received books: Doctor Dan: Pioneer in American Surgery, a biography of early African American physician and surgeon Daniel Hale Williams, and Wo-He-Lo: The Story of Camp Fire Girls, 1910-1960, a history of the first 50 years of Camp Fire Girls. Buckler was also involved in public relations for numerous nonprofit organizations including the YMCA, Camp Fire Girls, and the National Council of Negro Women.

Abstract: Papers and photographs of Chester H. Budish, an airplane mechanic and artilleryman during World War II. The collection includes scattered correspondence between Budish and his family in which he received news from home while passing on censored descriptions of his stateside training and service in North Africa and Europe. Also found are letters from an English woman Budish met while stationed in England, who he continued to correspond with after the war. A large number of picture postcards collected while in the service highlight the ephemeral items. A separation record and other personal service records fill out the details of his time in the military. Ephemeral items include the patient identification tag he wore while being removed from the frontlines, a piece of German propaganda, and an Italian safe conduct pass. Photographs include many candid shots taken while training stateside and during his lengthy recuperation from injuries received in the line of duty.

Abstract: Papers of Joseph Budziszewski, a Milwaukee electrician primarily concerned with his avocation of singing and with his performances in operatic productions. Included are his files of memorabilia from his singing engagements: programs, handbills, and newspaper reviews, advertisements, and clippings, together with several music scores of Polish folk songs in arrangements which Budziszewski commissioned and performed in open-air concerts. Much of the collection consists of photocopies.

Abstract: The collection is comprised entirely of slides taken or perhaps copied by Dr. John Buenker as part of his ethnicity research in Kenosha, Racine, Chicago, and New York. Slides were used to produce three tapes. Most of the photography was coordinated by Head of Media David Campbell. Many of the historical Racine photos are copies from the collection of an unidentified local Racine resident.

Abstract: Letters sent to Mary Buestrin, a Wisconsin Electoral College member for the 2016 Presidential Election. The letters were intended to persuade Buestrin how to cast her vote as an Electoral College member. A random sample was selected from the original collection of letters. The letters were organized by the state from which they were sent, with letters from foreign countries and postcards kept separately. Also included are records from the Bush for President Grassroots Committee, on which Mary Buestrin served as chairman during the 2000 election.

Abstract: Documents showing conveyance of real estate, which include deeds and may include warranties, tax deeds, and foreclosure documents. Entries show names of persons involved in land transfer, legal description of land, and amount paid. The indexes contain names of grantors (sellers) and grantees (purchasers) noted in the real estate deeds. Indexes show date and time the deed was recorded, names of grantor and grantee, type of instrument, description of the property, and volume and page number of the deed record where the instrument is recorded. This microfilm was produced by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1983. Originals are in the Buffalo County Register of Deeds office, Alma, Wis.

Abstract: Papers and still images pertaining to the service of Francis Xavier Bufka Jr., a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, resident who served in the Army and the Army Air Forces during World War II. Papers include childhood ephemera, diaries written by Bufka from 1941 through 1958, letters written to and from friends and family, and various military papers and orders. Childhood ephemera include several cards to and from Bufka, as well as newspaper articles about Bufka. Diaries cover his day-to-day life in the military, including his time training and being stationed overseas. Letters written to him, mostly from family, relay news of relatives and wishes for his well-being. Letters from Bufka are mostly sent to his close friend, Joan Wanvig. He relates his frustrations training and living with so many people, his daily activities and the work he does in the military. Also included are orders from the military from each year of his service. These include transportation orders, promotions and orders regarding different jobs Bufka held in the military. Other military records include his military identification, letters of recommendation sent to the military, and his honorable discharge records. After the war, Bufka's diaries and letters to Wanvig cover his adjustment to life in Wisconsin. Of interest in military papers is an artistic sketch of Bufka done in 1941. Photographs include many images from Bufka's training around the country at various forts and in different cities, as well as his travels throughout the Pacific. Images also show many candid moments among soldiers at various forts and bases as well as the scenery in Japan, Korea and the Philippines. Of note are images he took while at Fort Bragg, of an old slave market (B4, F14) and took several photographs of the segregated African American troops (B4, F16). Bufka took a few photographs of specific events, such as Douglas MacArthur's visit to Tokyo (B7, F7). Black and white negatives are included for many of the photograph. There are a few negatives with no positive prints in the collection, which capture similar images to the photographs. Color slides include images of Bufka and others during his service, mostly in the Pacific, as well as images taken by Bufka after his service. Images include a homecoming parade for Douglas MacArthur, Central Park in New York, and tourist destinations in Europe.

Abstract: Papers and photographs of Helen C. Bulovsky, a Madison native who served with the Army Nurse Corps in Europe during World War I. The letters that she wrote home to her family comprise the largest part of the collection. Bulovsky wrote about her excitement and fears while serving in field hospitals mere miles behind the front lines in Europe. She also wrote about her homesickness and her desire for letters from home. Her diary, which has large gaps, compliments the letters nicely and describes many of the same events. Biographical materials, service records, and obituaries fill in the details about her life and military service. Two maps show the extent of her movements while serving in Europe. Photographs include a scrapbook showing Bulovsky and fellow staff from Madison General Hospital with humorous clippings from periodicals to caption the photos. Other photographs show her and fellow nurses in Army Nurse Corps uniforms, Bulovsky's sisters with war souvenirs that she sent home, and scenic shots from Europe and New York harbor. Also included is a CD of scanned images of a scrapbook that documents Bulovsky's service in Europe during the war.

Abstract: The Kappa Kappa Gamma House Assault Investigation records are primarily composed of reports submitted by field agents of the Pinkerton's National Detective Agency during the investigation of an incident which occurred on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in February of 1911. The investigation followed a break-in at the Kappa Kappa Gamma House in which an intruder assaulted the house chaperone. The Board of Trustees of the University retained investigators from the Pinkertons who followed and interviewed several suspects and kept watch of the Langdon street area at night. The collection is primarily the reports of these men submitted to the Pinkerton office in Chicago, but also contains some memos from campus watchman C.H. Batty to University Business Manager H.C. Bumpus and some letters of concern written by Frank Blodgett to Thomas Brittingham, John Fredrickson and Governor Francis McGovern.

Specifically, the collections includes documentation about Justice Thurgood Marshall's visit to the University of Wisconsin in 1968; papers on the aftermath of the riots on the University of Wisconsin campus in the late 1960's; Juris Doctorate degree paperwork from the late 1960's to the early 1970's; and memos to faculty from 1968 to 1972.

Abstract: Papers and photographs of Casimir A. Burczyk, who served as a photo interpreter with the Army Air Force in the South Pacific during World War II. The collection consists mostly of photographs taken during Burczyk's time in the South Pacific, particularly on Iwo Jima. There are many shots of planes, including almost twenty of unique nose art painted on the aircraft. Other photographs show the military base that was built on Iwo Jima including building, vehicles, equipment and cemeteries. Most photos of personnel, including some of a basketball game, are unidentified. The photographs are of a high quality and give a good idea of the military establishment on Iwo Jima, but their lack of identification limits their overall usefulness. The papers consist of separation and discharge forms for Burczyk, as well as some brief reminiscences of his service.

Abstract: Records of an organization formed in 1944 to promote and coordinate Jewish education in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Also included are records of its predecessors, the Joint Committee on Jewish Education and the Milwaukee Talmud Torah Association. The files are those of George Laikin, an officer of each organization. They contain articles of incorporation, by-laws, correspondence, minutes, and reports, documenting the reorganization of the Milwaukee Talmud Torah Association and the formation of the Joint Committee in 1940; the formation of the Bureau of Jewish Education in 1944; and the 1947 consolidations of its affiliated schools: the Beth Israel and United Hebrew Schools, the Milwaukee Talmud Torah, and the Yiddish Folk Shule. Also included is a comprehensive survey and evaluation of Jewish education in Milwaukee sponsored by the Milwaukee Jewish Welfare Fund in 1941.

Abstract: Papers of a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee English professor which include professional and personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, drafts of published works, copies of works submitted for publication, reviews, and notes. The professional correspondence includes thank you letters, letters of inquiry, rejection and acceptance letters from publishers, and routine correspondence with colleagues. The personal correspondence deals primarily with Burke's battle against heart disease. A large portion of the collection concerns Burke's involvement with professional organizations, particularly the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English (WCTE). The collection also reflects her interest in Black literature. She taught courses in Black literature, and she served on the advisory board for the Negro-American Literature Forum, which later became the Black American Literature Forum.

Abstract: Papers of Charles Burmeister of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and Frankfort, Michigan, containing: memoranda concerning the history of the merchant marine of the Great Lakes, particularly Lake Michigan; correspondence, 1879-1880, of Hannah, Lay & Company, a Traverse City, Michigan, lumber firm; diaries, 1864-1891; reminiscences of life in Door County, Wisconsin; an Ottawa Indian trade vocabulary; an autobiography of his brother, Byron Burmeister; and photographs. The photographs include an album with cyanotype images made by Charles Burmeister including views of Frankfort, Michigan, the harbor and shoreline, winter scenes, boats, a lifesaving station, shipping operations, family outings, a Methodist church camp, and an Indian camp; another album consists of portraits of Charles Burmeister and his family; and the loose photographs contain similar images of Frankfort found in the first album, 1879-1890, and two portraits of Burmeister. Also includes a black cut-out silhouette of Burmeister, 1879, some clipped advertisements for his grocery store, and a 1959 film based on Burmeister’s accounts of shipping accidents off of Frankfort from 1878 to 1886.

Abstract: Proceedings of the Board of Supervisors including minutes of board meetings, resolutions, committee reports, reports of county officers and commissions, financial reports, and communications to the board. The 1877-1881 volume is a photocopy of the original. (The original was charred in a courthouse fire prior to 1887; after photocopying it was discarded.) Volume A is an exact transcription of official proceedings as published in the Burnett County Sentinel. The original volume for some of these years was destroyed in the courthouse fire.

Abstract: Records of Burrows and Richardson, a Madison, Wisconsin, real estate firm that was established in the early 1850s by James B. Richardson and operated under varying titles and partners--Abraham H. Palmer, Napoleon B. Van Slyke, Timothy Brown, Levi B. Vilas, and Leonard Farwell--until 1868 when it was taken over by George B. Burrows, who continued it until his death. The firm also acted as an investment, loan, and collection agency for other land companies and for individuals, including Charles Doty. The records document the firm's work with similar agencies in the state and its banking operations from the late 1850s to 1863, as well as its real estate transactions.

Abstract: Records of Busch-Sulzer Brothers, a St. Louis, Missouri manufacturing firm which produced diesel engines. Founded by beer magnate Adolphus Busch as the Diesel Motor Company of America, 1898-1901, then the American Diesel Engine Company, 1901-1911, this firm was the first to manufacture diesel engines in the United States under the patent of German scientist Dr. Rudolph Diesel. In 1911, the company merged with the Sulzer Brothers Diesel Engine Company, a Swiss manufacturer. The records include correspondence, reports, blueprints, drawings, and legal records documenting the early development of the diesel engine, improvement of the locomotive engine, submarine engine production during World War I, engine production during World War II, and general industrial manufacturing; financial records documenting assets and liabilities, production costs, and engine orders; and corporate records including minutes of Board of Directors and stockholder meetings. Also of interest is one folder relating to the company's relations with labor during the 1920s and data on employee wages and working conditions, advertising publications, and operating handbooks.

Abstract: Records of a membership organization formed in La Crosse in 1916, and dedicated to elevating standards for women in business and the professions and working for social and economic legislation. The collection includes articles of incorporation, by-laws, histories, a constitution, membership records, correspondence, fragmentary committee and program records, financial materials, minutes, scrapbooks, annual directories, and photographs. Also included are similar records of the Coulee Region Business and Professional Women's Club; and scattered records of Coulee Region District 4 and its affiliate BPW clubs (Neillsville, Sparta, Tomah, and Vernon Area), the Wisconsin Federation, and the National Federation. Photographs include award and scholarship recipients, member participation in state and national conventions, officers, and group shots taken during the sixtieth anniversary.

Abstract: Minutes, annual reports, scrapbooks, yearbooks (directories), history, articles of incorporation and bylaws of a Kenosha, Wisconsin, social, cultural, and community service organization made up of working and retired woman business owners, professionals, managers, civil servants, and office staff. Founded in 1928, the BPW of Kenosha affiliated with the Wisconsin Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs (Southeastern District No, 9) and the National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Club, Inc., in 1931. The collection primarily documents club meetings and activities. Scrapbook material includes newspaper clippings; programs from Kenosha, neighboring group, and district meetings; and photographs. Photographs depict officers, members, and events such as the 1970 March of Dimes radio auction and a 1968 “Fashions in Nonsense” fashion show. There is a short home movie segment from an unidentified meeting, circa 1966. Summaries of members' vocations or job titles and places of employment can be found in scattered yearbooks, membership lists, and membership committee annual reports. A year-by-year history of the group to 1956 is included in the collection, as well as an abridged history which appears at the beginning of the 1952-53 yearbook.

Abstract: Records of the Business and Professional Women's Club of Madison, the Madison membership organization affiliated with the Wisconsin Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc. The Madison group was organized in 1919 and dedicated to peace and the economic interests of business and professional women. The group adopts yearly themes advancing the status of local women in economic, political, and social aspects. The collection consists of the constitution and by-laws, citations, committee materials including annual reports, financial records, executive board and monthly meeting minutes, a history, membership lists, loan and scholarship material for the Leora Westlake Memorial Loan Fund and Trees for Tomorrow, a complete run of the monthly newsletter Commentator, activity programs, yearbooks, and scrapbooks. Abstract: The Business and Professional Women's Club of Milwaukee records document the organization's role in improving the conditions for working women through education, participation in community affairs and legislative action. Covering the years 1920-1998, the collection contains an almost complete run of the organization's newsletters, the Bulletin (1922-1948) and the Broadcaster (1948-1998), as well as executive committee minutes, committee reports and correspondence files; these files comprise the bulk of the collection. Also included, but to a lesser extent, are membership lists, handbooks, by-laws, annual report files and histories compiled for anniversary celebrations. The collection's photographs document the club's activities and members. Subject files also contain specific information regarding the organization's efforts to secure passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, influence state legislation, and its role in founding the Milwaukee Art Museum War Memorial Center.

Abstract: Records, 1960s to 2008, of the Wisconsin Federation of the Business and Professional Women Green Bay-De Pere chapter, consisting primarily of minutes from local and state meetings. Although it contains some state-level materials, the collection is firmly rooted in local chapter-level records mostly retained by women from the Green Bay-De Pere chapter. Publications, such as directories, manuals, handbooks, awards, convention programs, and local, state, and national newsletters, are also included. The records showcase the evolving professionalization of women in the workforce, and the way in which women's advocacy groups worked to increase the quality and quantity of professional opportunities for women. The collection also contains scattered documentation of local group histories, such as a scrapbook, correspondence, budgets, and newspaper clippings.

Abstract: Records of the Business Improvement District (BID) which worked to promote and manage development by means of special tax assessments within the Historic Third Ward area of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The collection documents the BID's close relationship with the Historic Third Ward Association, which developed the overall planning and development of the area. The collection includes operating plans, which provide details on the goals and activities of the District, and minutes and background materials of the board of directors. The records of the parking structure contain extensive documentation of the design, planning, and construction of the parking and retail structure sponsored by the BID. The BID's Streetscape Project (sometimes called "Streetscaping") was an effort to improve the physical appearance of the district. The project began in April 1989 and was completed in 1992. The collection contains extensive documentation concerning the project, including correspondence with City of Milwaukee officials, especially the Department of Public Works, Renner Architects, and others about the streetscape plan and implementation.

Abstract: Transcripts of oral history interviews conducted by Fran Leeper Buss with low-income and minority women of all ages and from various geographic areas. The interviews focus on the experiences of being poor and female. Especially strong on issues of employment and family life, they include information on sexual harassment, welfare programs, domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse, and issues of race and class. The production and indexing of the transcripts was a collaborative project of the Southwest Institute for Research and Women at the University of Arizona and the Schlesinger Library on the History of American Women at Radcliffe College, with funding from the Ford Foundation. The interviews are indexed by ethnic/racial group, geographic area, and subject.

Abstract: Papers of Beverly Butler, a Wisconsin writer specializing in young adult fiction often based on historical themes. Blind since age 14, Butler graduated cum laude from Mount Mary College in Milwaukee (1954) where she studied creative writing, and she received a master of arts degree from Marquette University in 1961. In addition to writing, she has taught creative writing at Mount Mary College and at the Rhinelander School of the Arts. The collection includes professional correspondence and manuscripts of her books published between 1955 and 1982, including Captive Desire which was published under the pseudonym Kathleen Victor.

Abstract: Correspondence, memorandum books, diaries, and addresses of James Davie Butler, professor of ancient languages and literature at the University of Wisconsin, 1858-1867, lecturer, and antiquarian. The bulk of the early papers, 1797-1844, concerns the business affairs of James Butler, Sr., a merchant of Rutland, Vermont. Butler's own correspondence, mainly 1870-1905, deals with Wisconsin Indian languages and archeology; the Frederick S. Perkins collection of copper implements; history and identification of portraits of Christopher Columbus; genealogy of the Butler and Weatherbee families; book collecting; numismatics; and personal matters. There is a 12-page letter by James Stevenson giving personal recollections of James Bridger; memorandum books and diaries, particularly for 1839-1844, including a trip to Europe in 1842, and much briefer notes on later travels; a commonplace book kept by Butler, and one kept by Joseph Hinde, started in 1706; and articles, sermons, and addresses.

Abstract: Letters written to and by Miles Butterfield while he was captain of Company F (1864) and later Company C (1865) of the 5th Regiment Wisconsin Infantry. The correspondence covers his repeated attempts to resign from the army, none of which were approved. There are also requests for leaves of absence and official orders describing his next assignments. There is also a detailed letter describing a dream he had in which he explains that he would not be able to live if his wife and their baby left him.

Abstract: Diaries and letters of Anson W. Buttles, a rural resident of the township of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In the diaries, kept continuously from 1856 to 1906 on a farm near Fox Point, Buttles remarks on national elections and gives information on local political activity derived from his positions as town clerk, justice of the peace, school clerk, county surveyor, and county superintendent of schools. For the Civil War period, there are notations on the volunteer army, the draft, civilian privations, and the Indian war scare. The diaries also include references to farm operations and household economies; Dutch immigrant life; the Lady Elgin steamboat disaster in 1860; the Chicago fire of 1871; the Milwaukee strike of 1886; the panic and mob rule following bank closures of 1861 and 1893; rural entertainments; smallpox vaccinations; road building; books read; and family life. There are a few letters from Byron Kilbourn, Abram Vliet, Don J. Whittemore, and Paul Juneau from 1851-1857 containing information on surveying for the La Crosse and Milwaukee Railroad; genealogical material on the Buttles and Stoughton Families; and letters to his wife describing his work as engineer during the construction of the Milwaukee & Mississippi Railroad and the Milwaukee & La Crosse Railroad.

Abstract: Research of Karen Buzzard, Professor and Director, School of Art and Media Studies, Fairleigh Dickinson University, consisting of media market data and reports throughout the United States from Arbitron, Media Statistics Inc., and Nielsen. The bulk of the material comes from Media Statistics Inc. during the period from 1976 to 1982 and includes public ascertainment surveys concerning demographics, people's attitudes towards where they live, radio audience surveys and reports, and diaries measuring household VCR and cable television use. The Nielsen material is from 2003 to 2009 and consists of reports about television viewing habits. The Arbitron materials consist of one 2005 report from Springfield, Missouri.
