Abstract:
Papers and still images pertaining to the service of Francis Xavier Bufka Jr., a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, resident who served in the Army and the Army Air Forces during World War II. Papers include childhood ephemera, diaries written by Bufka from 1941 through 1958, letters written to and from friends and family, and various military papers and orders. Childhood ephemera include several cards to and from Bufka, as well as newspaper articles about Bufka. Diaries cover his day-to-day life in the military, including his time training and being stationed overseas. Letters written to him, mostly from family, relay news of relatives and wishes for his well-being. Letters from Bufka are mostly sent to his close friend, Joan Wanvig. He relates his frustrations training and living with so many people, his daily activities and the work he does in the military. Also included are orders from the military from each year of his service. These include transportation orders, promotions and orders regarding different jobs Bufka held in the military. Other military records include his military identification, letters of recommendation sent to the military, and his honorable discharge records. After the war, Bufka's diaries and letters to Wanvig cover his adjustment to life in Wisconsin. Of interest in military papers is an artistic sketch of Bufka done in 1941. Photographs include many images from Bufka's training around the country at various forts and in different cities, as well as his travels throughout the Pacific. Images also show many candid moments among soldiers at various forts and bases as well as the scenery in Japan, Korea and the Philippines. Of note are images he took while at Fort Bragg, of an old slave market (B4, F14) and took several photographs of the segregated African American troops (B4, F16). Bufka took a few photographs of specific events, such as Douglas MacArthur's visit to Tokyo (B7, F7). Black and white negatives are included for many of the photograph. There are a few negatives with no positive prints in the collection, which capture similar images to the photographs. Color slides include images of Bufka and others during his service, mostly in the Pacific, as well as images taken by Bufka after his service. Images include a homecoming parade for Douglas MacArthur, Central Park in New York, and tourist destinations in Europe.
