Abstract: Papers of Richard J. (Rick) Phelps, a Wisconsin native, documenting his positions in public service and advocacy for social and legal justice for youth. These positions include Executive Secretary of the Governor’s Advocacy Committee for Children and Youth, a citizen’s committee to address public policy affecting families (1974-1975); head of the Office of the Wisconsin State Public Defender, a cabinet level agency (1983-1988); Dane County (Wisconsin) Executive (1988-1997); and founder and Executive Director of the Youth and Policy Law Center Inc., focusing on social and legal justice for children and at-risk families (1976-1983). Files also document his unsuccessful campaign in the 1989 primary for the 2nd Congressional District seat, and his instrumental role in the formation and passage of a major revision in the Wisconsin Children’s Code, Assembly Bill 874.

Abstract: The Phi Epsilon Kappa Fraternity is the oldest national honorary physical education fraternity in the nation and the first fraternity on the La Crosse campus. The Phi Epsilon Kappa Fraternity was founded in 1913 at the Normal College of the American Gymnastics Union in Indianapolis, Indiana. La Crosse's Nu chapter of Phi Epsilon Kappa was organized by Walter Wittich in 1926. Wittich then went on to sponsor the fraternity throughout his life. In 1930, at the fraternity's national conference, the Nu chapter had the highest academic rating of any chapter in the country. The members of Phi Epsilon Kappa were professionally trained men engaged in or preparing for teaching health education, physical education, recreation education, or safety education. In 1975, Phi Epsilon Kappa extended membership to women. Some of the objectives of Phi Epsilon Kappa include fostering scientific research, facilitating the exchange of information and experience, and promoting sound community understanding.

Abstract: Records of the UWM chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society, including materials regarding the establishment of the chapter. The collection largely documents the selection of students and faculty for Phi Kappa Phi membership. The collection contains minutes, which include committee reports; initiation programs and membership lists; constitution and by-laws; correspondence, mainly regarding membership, initiation and chapter activities; some brochures, program materials, and a guide for planning chapter activities; handbooks from the national office; and a number of miscellaneous items.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1928-1952, of a Wisconsin industrialist, Republican Party leader, and son of Governor Emanuel L. Philipp. The files consist almost entirely of correspondence concerning Philipp's activities as chairman of the Republican State Central Committee (1934-1938), national committeeman (1944-1952), and leader in the Milwaukee County Republican Committee. The files deal with policy, fundraising and finances, and rivalries between various Republican Party leaders. Also included are materials on Philipp's support of the gubernatorial campaign of Walter Kohler, Sr., in 1930 and ongoing work in behalf of the presidential aspirations of Robert A. Taft. The political correspondence includes numerous exchanges with state leaders such as A. M. Brayton, William J. Campbell, John B. Chapell, Thomas Coleman, George L. Gilkey, F. L. Gullickson, Julius Heil, C. L. Kolb, Alvin O'Konski, Henry Ringling, Edward A. Samp, F. J. Sensenbrenner, George Vits, and J. Pierpoint Wood. A small number of files concern Philipp's extensive philanthropic involvements in behalf of the Citizens Bureau of Milwaukee, the Family Welfare Association of Milwaukee, and other Milwaukee organizations. Only a few letters pertain to his business activities; these relate to his work in association with his father during the early 1920's.

Abstract: Papers of Michael Philippi, an award winning theater lighting and set designer, containing production files for plays Philippi worked on for a variety of theaters in the United States, as well as several overseas productions. Theaters include: the Goodman Theatre, Wisdom Bridge Theatre, Northlight Theatre, the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis and the Utah Shakespearean Festival, among others. Materials cover his early work in the early 1970s while a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison through the final play he worked on in 2009 for the Goodman Theatre.

Abstract: William Pyle Philips (1882-1950) was Treasurer of United Artists Corporation from mid-1933 to mid-1935. The files consist primarily of policy-level correspondence and reports, directed to his office as treasurer, but also encompass more general corporate activities and policies during the period. The bulk of the files date between 1933 and 1935.

Abstract: Records, mostly dating from the 1950s, of the Phoenix Hosiery Company, which was located in Milwaukee. The collection includes advertising and promotional materials; annual reports; director's reports and board of directors' minutes; photographs, mainly documenting hosiery production; an anniversary booklet containing historical information about the Milwaukee Branch of the American Federation of Hosiery Works; and a publicity scrapbook, largely consisting of newspaper clippings. The collection also contains a detailed history of the company (compiled in 1996) which includes information about the company's finances, management, marketing, competition, production, and labor relations. Also found in the collection are hosiery boxes and nylon canisters, hosiery color samples, samples of stockings in various stages of completion, silkworm cocoons and silk samples, and a number of other advertising/promotional items. Information about the sale of the company to the Kayser-Roth Corporation in 1959 is also included.

Abstract: Photographs made by Photoart House. A series of photographs show military housing at Camp Douglas, Wisconsin, and Company G of the Wisconsin National Guard leaving Madison, Wisconsin, 1916. Other images include a panoramic photograph of Wisconsin Governor Emanuel L. Philipp and presumably members of the executive branch of state government in front of the state capitol in Madison, Wisconsin, on December 7, 1920; a panoramic photograph of a group identified as the R.L.C.A. gathered for an annual conference posed in front of the state capitol in 1915; a panoramic photograph of the Rotary Conference Ball (10th District) inside the state capitol; and a portrait of the Wisconsin All-State Orchestra, circa 1920. Abstract: Print and near-print materials reflecting the activities of the Madison, Wisconsin chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), a non-profit organization committed to public and professional education on the medical hazards of nuclear weaponry. Included are flyers, newsletters, statements, member mailings, clippings, posters, fact sheets, brochures, and pamphlets, some items relating to other organizations with similar interests. Of note is information about the 1991 “Guns or Butter” resolution introduced in the Wisconsin Assembly; material about the group's response to the Persian Gulf War; and material on the October 1983 Symposium held in Madison on the medical consequences of nuclear war. The symposium is also documented on videotape. In addition, there are videos of the series Nuclear Vision hosted by Dr. Zorba Paster, as well as several miscellaneous tapes of speakers and programs.

Abstract: Organized in April 1982, the La Crosse area chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) was comprised of a group of physicians dedicated to the antinuclear movement and nuclear disarmament. This non-profit organization sponsored numerous special programs including the Festival of Lanterns, and they helped fund the International Peace Lantern Exchange Project, modeled on the Festival of Lanterns. With the end of the Cold War in 1992, the local group continued in a dormant stage, finally disbanding in 1995. Records from the Physicians for Social Responsibility date from 1980-2001, with the bulk of the records dating from 1980-1992. They include historical materials, administrative files, financial materials, membership materials, programs and events. Materials from the Wisconsin Physicians for Social Responsibility, National Physicians for Social Responsibility and related organizations are also included.
