Abstract: Papers of Hollywood motion picture director-producer Otto Preminger. Included are production files for Hurry Sundown, In Harm's Way, and Skidoo which contain scripts, correspondence, call sheets, reports, breakdowns, musical scores, cast lists, financial and promotional materials, notes, and sketches. Although the quantity and type of material varies with each film, these files generally document aspects of filmmaking such as writing, casting, design, technical production, and promotion. Noteworthy in the Skidoo files is a series of notes which describe the activities and accomplishments of each day's shooting; occasionally these include short quotes made by Preminger on the set which reveal his directing methods and temperament. A dissertation by Ronald Policy, based on the Skidoo records and describing the film's production, is also included. A small file of biographical clippings completes the collection.

Abstract: Papers of Prentice, a Stevens Point, Wisconsin, surveyor and businessman, including fragmentary correspondence, 1857-1907, mostly from business associates concerning timber sales; survey maps for the 1850s and 1860s for portions of Adams, Juneau, Marathon, and Portage counties containing descriptions of land conditions, plant cover, and soil; additional notebooks, maps, and diagrams concerning work as a Stevens Point city surveyor; two volumes of employee time records, 1881-1882; photographs; and genealogical materials concerning the Prentice, Van Dusen, and related families. The photographs are informal portraits of Prentice and his family and interior and exterior views of their home.

Abstract: Organized originally as the La Crosse Area Society for Historic Preservation in 1976, the group began meeting in 1975 and focused their energies in trying to protect and preserve La Crosse landmarks. In 1983, the group changed its name to the Preservation Alliance of La Crosse, Inc. Its purpose is to preserve the historic buildings of La Crosse and raise public awareness concerning historical preservation. Records from the Preservation Alliance of La Crosse, 1976-2000, include administrative files, materials related to events sponsored by the group, financial materials, projects in which the group engaged, and allied groups.

Abstract: Correspondence, research notes, articles and addresses, memorabilia, and scrapbooks kept by a journalist who was superintendent of the United States Senate Press Gallery, 1897-1932, and librarian of the Senate, 1932-1957. Research notes, which form the bulk of the collection, include information on press coverage of the Senate, liberties of the press and privileges of the Senate, filibusters, technicalities of Senate conduct, political conventions, and Presidential elections. While many of the notes are transcribed from the Congressional Record and other sources, one group of notes on filibusters and the U.S. entry into World War I are excerpted from Preston's diaries. Scattered correspondence, 1915-1955, concerns various career anniversaries, and occasional articles and addresses relate to politics and life in Washington, D.C. Seven scrapbooks contain clippings, letters, and pictures relating to his career as well as to important news stories from the 1910's to the 1940's.

Abstract: Papers of Price, a journalist and editor with the Associated Press, 1912-1941; director of the U.S. Office of Censorship, 1941-1945; and assistant secretary-general of the United Nations for administrative and financial service, 1947-1954. The collection consists of correspondence, writings, professional subject files, and biographical material. Seven boxes of writings constitute the most important segment of the collection. Represented are World War II speeches; a lengthy, unpublished memoir; and published and unpublished articles and stories spanning his entire career on topics such as freedom of the press and censorship. In addition, three scrapbooks contain clippings of his bi-weekly column, “Politics at Random,” written while chief of the AP's Washington, D.C., bureau during the 1930's. Also present are several notebooks mainly compiled while director of the Office of Censorship which contain his opinions and reactions to various events and people. Correspondence, 1908-1976 includes some personal exchanges, a separate file relating to his 1944 Pulitzer Prize citation, and general letters. Abstract: Records of the Prime Manufacturing Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a company involved in the manufacture of railroad supplies and the Prime Electric Fence Controller (originally known as the Gengler Electric Fence). The records document the electric fence division of the company, primarily from 1934 to 1942. They mainly consist of advertising and sales promotional literature such as catalogs, circulars, bulletins, newsletters, a ready-reference encyclopedia, and a merchandising program. Advertising layouts are also included. The incoming correspondence, primarily from 1935-1939, deals with consumer reaction to the product. Sales records include sales literature for dealers, price lists, and consumer surveys. Informational files on electric fences, their safety and use for various animals, and an Underwriters' Laboratory study of the Prime Fence Controller complete the collection.

Abstract: Miscellaneous records of the Fish Creek Park Company and the neighborhood of Fairy Chasm, Wisconsin, compiled by long-time residents Jack and Martha Prince. The collection contains numerous photographs of area homes and public events; oral history interviews with other residents; and minutes of the Fish Creek Park Company's board of directors. The company, founded in 1892 and dissolved in 1971, bought and sold real estate in the private resort community of Fairy Chasm. The community evolved into two sections (North and South Fairy Chasm), and incorporated into the cities of Mequon (1957) and Bayside (1955). The collection documents the growth of the community, changes in home ownership, and local pride in the environmental beauty of the area.

Abstract: Variant scripts for several television programs produced by Procter & Gamble Productions, a subsidiary of Procter & Gamble, including soap operas, The Guiding Light (1958-1979) and As the World Turns (1956-1962, 1965, 1971, 1973-1979), as well as television shows, The Danny Thomas Show (1959-1960; previously titled Make Room for Daddy) and The Rifleman (1958-1959). Most of the scripts are mimeographed air scripts including scripts for commercials. Many are annotated to indicate timing and dialogue changes. Also included are some production records including files from 1958 to 1975 of Lucy Ferri Rittenberg of the Compton Advertising Agency, who served as production executive for The Guiding Light, and files from 1955 to 1957 of Charles Fisher, the account executive at Benton and Bowles who produced As the World Turns. Several of The Rifleman scripts were written by Sam Peckinpah and by Bruce Geller.

Abstract: Records of a project established in 1993 through the Kettering Foundation, with a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The collection documents the project's efforts to develop and promote public journalism, also known as civic journalism, a movement that aimed to help journalists reconnect with their communities and foster public discourse. The project's primary function was its seminars which brought together journalists, editors, and scholars two or three times yearly from 1993 through 1997. The bulk of the collection consists of examples of various public journalism initiatives sent to the project by participating news organizations from around the United States, including the Charlotte Observer, the Akron Beacon-Journal, and the Wisconsin State Journal. These consist primarily of newspaper clippings, but also include correspondence, reports, survey results, and external coverage of the initiatives such as elections, education, neighborhood crime, sprawl, and race relations. Also included are early funding materials, reports, publicity materials, articles about public journalism, and publications and speeches by the project's director, Jay Rosen.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1957-1980, of William Proxmire, Democratic Senator from Wisconsin (1957-1989), known for his liberal views on social issues, his fiscal conservatism, and the Golden Fleece awards with which he drew attention to wasteful government spending. Included are biographical materials and clippings, constituent correspondence, speeches, books and articles, sound and video recordings, newsletters and press releases, and federal agency case files. Files of staff members, the heart of the collection, document numerous issues of special concern to the Senator: the fairness doctrine; ratification of the international Genocide Treaty; Great Lakes harbors and shipping; and the SST, the B-1 bomber, and other military spending. General subject files concern numerous topics such as abortion, economic development in Wisconsin, opposition to the Senate leadership of Lyndon Baines Johnson, taxes, and energy. Also present are campaign files, schedules, voting records, and filmed campaign ads, televised “reports from Washington,” and other films.
