Abstract: Image subject albums compiled by Society Iconography staff in the mid-20th century for common image requests. Subjects covered: early American Frontier Forts, United States Civil War, agriculture and farming, lumbering, steamboats, railroads, aeronautics, Wisconsin towns and cities with several albums devoted to Racine and Madison, the four state capitols of Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin, and the La Follette family. Images are not limited to Wisconsin, and include images from Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Formats include: photographs, drawings, maps, broadsides, and reproductions.

Abstract: Collected materials, mainly 1949-1951, of Sue Hackett, who attended Joy Camps in Hazelhurst, Wisconsin, consisting of scrapbooks with photographs, memorabilia, newspaper clippings, and songbooks and correspondence detailing her experiences at the camp. Later materials include a brief autobiography touching on the impact Joy Camps had in her life and biographical information about camp owner Barbara Joy. Also included is a compact disc and cassette recording of Hackett singing camp songs and talking about the camp.

Summary: Ten University of Wisconsin-Madison students who enrolled in the Summer 2000 Field School course (Folklore 639) focused their fieldwork projects on Southwestern Wisconsin folk traditions in conjunction with Folklore Village's plan to produce an exhibit on the region's folklife. Students interviewed over 23 people on such topics as commercial fishing, hunting, food and herb gathering and gardening, ethnic foodways, markets, and medicines, decoy carving, stone building, religious shrine building, Hmong needlework, rosemaling, julebukking, and supernatural tales. Materials include field reports, interview sound recordings, color slides, color photographs, color negatives, black-and-white photographs, black-and-white negatives, and contact sheets.

Abstract: Records, 1922-2004 (bulk 1990s-early 2000s), of Sunburst, Inc., a non-profit childcare agency affiliated with the United Church of Christ (UCC). It was founded in 1920 as the Winnebago Mission School but by the 1950s was known as the Winnebago Children's Home and in 1973 changed its name to Sunburst, Inc. The agency consisted of three branches: Sunburst Youth Homes (SBYH), Sunburst Family Services (SFS), and the Sunburst Foundation. The records primarily document the administrative actions of the Board of Directors and the interaction between the board and the three subordinate branches from 1990 to 2002, as well as the closure of SBYH in 2001 and the subsequent foreclosure and lawsuit brought against SBYH by the Bank of Withee.

Abstract: Sundown was produced in 1941 by Walter Wanger Productions Inc. When Wanger left United Artists, the production company was reorganized as United Artists Productions Inc., and the unreleased picture, and its production files, became the property of United Artists. Because of these circumstances, this series contains the only production materials to be found in the United Artists Collection.

Abstract: Records, mainly 1950-1965, created by or relating to the office of the County Superintendent of Schools in Kewaunee County, Wisconsin. Series highlights the educational culture of mid-20th century rural Wisconsin, by including student demographics, educational curriculum, records from district-wide school-related events, information on teacher training and qualifications, and first-hand accounts and photographs depicting classroom organization. Administrative documents illustrate supervisory duties as performed by the Superintendent of Schools in conjunction with School Committees, the County Boards of Education, and the State Department of Public Instruction.

Abstract: Guest registers from several Superior, Wis., hotels and an unidentified campground. Included are registers for the Avery House (1873-1874), Superior House (1868-1872), The Euclid (1905), and the campground (1917, 1925-1927). Information generally includes registrant's name, residence, date, room number, and occasional remarks. There is also a guest account register (1856-1873) for the Superior House recording detailed expenses for each hotel registrant including room, wine, and laundry expenses incurred.

Abstract: Register showing the names of the parties to the mortgage contract; the number of the mortgage certificate; and the date of the mortgage, its acknowledgement, and its filing with the Clerk. Recorded sometimes as well are the terms of the mortgage, the location of the property, notes due, the amount of money involved, and the interest rates. Volume 12 registers transactions of the St. Louis Land Improvement Company.

Abstract: Records of the Board of Underwriters, an organization of Superior area fire and casualty insurance agents established to maintain equitable insurance rates. Included are proceedings, correspondence, financial records, and administrative materials including information on rates and insurance law. Much of the correspondence concerns the activities of Robert B. Nye, and the ouster of Charles A. Erhart in 1918. The Board was originally known as the Superior Fire Underwriters Association.

Abstract: Minutes, financial records, bulletins, clippings, and other records from the Superior Chamber of Commerce and its predecessor organizations. Dating primarily 1965-1975, the records include files from the athletic committee, the community development/tourism committee, the Retail Division, the programs Project P.R.O.U.D. and Task Force for Jobs, and numerous other committees. Subject files concern topics such as economic statistics, St. Lawrence Seaway development, environmental action programs, and area development. Predecessors were the Superior Association of Commerce founded in 1894, and the original Superior Chamber of Commerce (also known as the East End Chamber of Commerce), which incorporated in 1883 and relinquished its name and certain records to the Association in 1967.

Abstract: Records of the Superior Rotary Club, Wisconsin's first Rotary organization, illustrating the activities of local businessmen in Superior promoting ethical practices in business, increased civic development, and improved public welfare. The records consist of the club's constitution and bylaws, membership rosters, meeting minutes, and newsletters. The records also document the group's community activities and their involvement in issues of local, national and international importance. The club's correspondence and committee reports illustrate the promotion of local agriculture and support of work programs for boys, the Boy Scouts, and student exchange programs among other projects.

Abstract: Records of a club founded in 1893 “to promote the moral and intellectual development of its members.” Originally called the Women's Club of West Superior (often referred to as the Ladies' Literary Club), the organization changed its name to the Superior Woman's Club in 1926. Until World War II the members focused on projects, issues, and topics traditionally associated with the woman's sphere: home hygiene, domestic economy, infant care, etc. After the war years, club activities focused on major projects to benefit the community, such as founding the Djordje Kostic Institute for Audio-Linguistic Studies. The collection includes minutes, financial and membership records, extensive scrapbooks documenting club activities and community improvement projects, photographs, historical information, the constitution and bylaws, and incorporation information. There are also brief records of the Djordje Kostic Institute.

Abstract: A collection of papers, many of them copied from originals, relating to Superior and dealing with the area's history, including material on the fur trade, Indian trails, harbor, parks, schools, prisons, ethnic groups, aviation, housing, and churches. Present in original form are journals of area missionaries, surveyors, and early residents such as Sherman Hall, Thomas Clark, Charles Dwight Felt, and Hiram Hayes; topical essays by William E. Culkin, J.D. Ensign, J.H. Darling, Norris C. Dickey, and Richmond Banks; and other items. Additional similar papers, 1849-1942, available on microfilm, consist of material produced by several WPA Historic Records Survey projects which transcribed original local history materials, and reports and charts of a WPA project of the City Plan Commission which surveyed housing conditions. Included are papers by or concerning William George Cowell, the First Presbyterian Church, Harry Holder Grace, Mrs. Hiram Hayes (diaries from her Civil War visit to her husband serving with U.S. forces in Virginia), William Higgins, and August H. Zachau, and radio lectures (1935-1936) by Superior State Teachers College faculty.

Abstract: Papers of Susan Firer, former Poet Laureate of Milwaukee and adjunct professor of English at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The bulk of this collection is dedicated to Firer's work as a poet, including poetry journals, news clippings, and ephemera from public poetry events, with correspondence and some teaching materials. Also in the collection are video and audio recordings of various poetry events.

Abstract: Susan Lee Johnson was a faculty member in the History Department at UW-Madison. This collection is made up of course materials related to a course Susan taught with other faculty in the summer of 2005 called "The Santa Fe Trail: In Search of the Multiracial West," where they took 35 students to the American Southwest. The course addressed racial and diversity issues and the papers include personal journals from students who were enrolled in the course.

Abstract: Papers of Susan Taylor White, a scriptwriter for radio, including scripts as well as a small amount of personal papers. The bulk of the collection consists of the scripts she wrote between 1943 and 1978 for Voice of America (1952-1979) including such series as Merlin the Storyteller, Eyewitness, and Let's Meet the Ladies. Filed with some of the scripts are notes, research, or memos relating to them. The personal papers include correspondence, cards/invitations, fan mail, poetry, a scrapbook relating to the charitable organization Bundles for Britain, teaching materials from a course White taught at Lenox School in New York, and newspaper clippings, some of which relate to Voice of America and the United States Information Agency. Additionally, there are a number of tape recordings from White's radio programs as well as photographs documenting Bundles for Britain and a wedding reception at her apartment, plus photographs of Ms. White.
