The organization is also affiliated with the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA), a division of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). This group came into existence shortly after a sudden traffic accident caused the failure of the municipal wagon bridge (built in 1891). The collection consists of records of the La Crosse Bridge Association from 1935 and 1940. Materials include correspondence, minutes, committee materials, financial records, article/history drafts, and a photographic scrapbook documenting the new Cass Street bridge (Mississippi High Bridge) parade and dedication held on September 23, 1939. |

Administrative materials include board of directors' files such as minutes (1964-1979; 1981-1988; 1990-1992) and a list of members (1966-1991). Other files include executive correspondence, legal documents, newsletters, and materials related to special events sponsored by the Committee. The name was then changed to the La Crosse Concert Band. Privately sponsored, the band of professional musicians continues to perform every summer in La Crosse parks. Records of the La Crosse Concert Band (originally named the La Crosse City Band) consist of a constitution (2004), list of board members (2003-2004), minutes (1956-1978), clippings and schedules (1931-1982; 1993-2005), and photographs (1937-1967; 1979; 1990-2005). Lastly, a plastic kazoo with the Band's insignia is included. |

The annual reports include statistical and financial information as well as censuses of children under 20 years of age for each school district. The boundary files contain correspondence, minutes of public meetings, and orders describing land involved in approved and denied changes. For the period 1948-1950 the boundary files include minutes only. The case files are arranged by number and a number log serves as a finding aid to this section. Additionally, there are roster cards about individual teachers noting their salaries, their educational background, and other biographical information, and, for an earlier period, salary information is present in the superintendent's reports to the Teachers' Retirement Fund. |

The records primarily document the administrative and financial history of the institution, plus limited information about the patients. The records best document the years 1887-1930. Included are Board of Trustees meeting minutes, superintendents' correspondence, inmate admission and billing information (including biographical information), and financial journals and ledgers. |

Most of the records are photocopies of originals with two exceptions. A book of minutes covers the period December 1929-April 1964. Original photographs (circa 1950s) are included as well. The club sold their facility at 1905 Palace St. in 1998. A small group of club members continue to curl at the Galesville Curling Club. Members of the La Crosse Curling Club carry on their search for another facility in La Crosse. |

The last-named contains school directories; budgets and information on teacher salaries; surveys and planning materials for construction and renovation of buildings; handbooks for teachers, parents, and students; curricular materials and evaluations; and other publications and reports. There are also files of brochures and printed materials on individual schools such as Central High School and Logan Junior High School, as well as bulletins and other records of Emma Erickson School. Of special interest is a 1936 study of high school graduates and scrapbooks about the turn of the century “Penny Savings System” and the PTO of Washburn School, 1917-1934. Although there is little administrative correspondence in the series, there is a large file of correspondence of former superintendent Richard Bardwell about the administration of child care in La Crosse during World War II. This bridge was in use from 1891-1939 and was built and maintained by the City of La Crosse (Wis.). These records date from 1901-1939 and list river traffic, mainly steamboats and barges, that required the swinging span to be opened. Information included in these records are the name of and the time the vessel(s) passed through the bridge opening. Occasionally an engineer would note what the vessel was carrying, such as logs or lumber. The records end on Sept. 23, 1939, when the new high bridge at La Crosse was completed by the Wisconsin Highway Commission. |

The project was funded by city block grant money administered through the city’s Commission on Historic Sites project. The photographic survey was led by project director Edwin Hill of the Area Research Center, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and took three years to complete. This photographic archive of La Crosse, Wisconsin, architecture consists of one thousand color slides (35mm) of two hundred architecturally significant structures in La Crosse. Until 1908 the Committee on Parks, a committee of the Common Council, authorized expenditures and oversaw the administration of parks, while Public Works actually maintained the city parks. In 1908 the Council passed an ordinance establishing a Board of Park Commissioners and a Park Department to assume those supervisory duties. The materials are arranged in four series: General Resolutions, North Side Schools, South Side Schools, and Special Topics. Resolutions dealing with schools in general (usually multiple schools) were filed chronologically in a General series, along with some historical information on the schools in La Crosse, including buildings that were rented for school purposes. North Side and South Side schools were separated into their appropriate series, North Side Schools and South Side Schools. All of the old school buildings from the North and South sides are well represented, except for the branch schools which often were one to four room wooden buildings. The final series, Special Topics, includes resolutions about Industrial Education, the Normal School (later called State Teachers College, and finally University of Wisconsin-La Crosse), School for the Deaf, Teacher’s Salaries, and Vocational School (originally associated with the high schools; later independent from the city public school system and called Coleman Institute, then known as Western Wisconsin Technical Institute, and finally named Western Wisconsin Technical College). |

The Engineering Dept. works closely with the City of La Crosse’s Office of Public Works. The title of the City Engineer was changed from City Surveyor in approximately 1887. An Administrative series includes mainly contracts (1901-1961) and outgoing correspondence (1887-1937). The Subject Files (1856-1907) series pulls together by subject materials created by the city engineering department for their use, such as grading, plats, sanitary sewer and water mains. |

Although the reports generally consist of financial statistics to the Common Council, a number of offices wrote narrative summaries which help to document change in La Crosse’s city government and community life over time. The reports of the Police Justice are particularly fascinating as each individual arrested, the charge, and the fine or other punishment exacted was documented well into the 1900s. |

Ledgers contain financial data from 1886-1959. Arranged chronologically, these include accounts for each fund, such as fire, poor, general fund, streets, etc., and include income as well as expenditures. Financial journals contain data for the City of La Crosse, Wisconsin, from 1886-1963. The older cash journals (1856-1877) were incorporated into La Crosse Series 50 Licenses, since the financial information before 1886 is not consolidated, and the licensees were sometimes mentioned by name in the old volumes. Orders paid (expenditures) include drafts written by the City 1872-1906. These help to fill in the gap in the financial record from 1872-1886 when modern accounting practices began to take hold in La Crosse municipal government. |

About half of the papers are carbon copies of outgoing correspondence from the mayor’s office regarding board and committee appointments, and some correspondence about city topics. Many of the letters are routine in nature. The other half of the collection are newspaper clippings from the La Crosse (Wis.) Tribune on various topics and issues, such as river boat gambling, hotels, taxes, etc., dating from 1976; 1988-1989; 1992. There is no personal or biographical information on Zielke, other than a few editorials he wrote, 1984-1991. |

Correspondence is between league officers and union officials, attorneys, scholars, and office holders on topics of concern to labor, particularly proposed labor legislation. The correspondence and memoranda of Russel Nixon, the Washington representative of the league, to Secretary John T. Jones illustrate the organization's lobbying methods. Other correspondents include George L. Berry, John L. Lewis, and Robert M. Renamed LaCrosse Footwear, Inc. in 1986, the company designs, manufactures, and markets premium quality rubber, leather and vinyl footwear for sporting, recreational and occupational markets. Operations were consolidated and manufacturing was relocated from La Crosse, Wis., to Portland, Oregon, in 2001. Records include newspaper articles, catalogs (1909-1996) of shoes and boots produced by the company, financial records (1897-1956), patents and trademarks, photographic images and shoe samples. |

Call Number: WVM Mss 926 Abstract: Records of the Ladies of the 32nd Division Veterans Association, an auxiliary group composed of the wives and female blood relatives of veterans of the 32nd Infantry Division (later Brigade). The function of this organization, based largely in Wisconsin and Michigan, is to support the activities of the 32nd Division Veterans Association. Records include three historical scrapbooks that provide a great deal of information about the group, its functions, and its officers. Other administrative records include a list of charter members, president's reports, and reunion registers that list attendees. Two newspaper scrapbooks collected by the Ladies document the World War II service of the 32nd Division from basic training through fighting in the Pacific and a military ball program shows a social activity of the Wisconsin National Guard in which the Ladies could take part. Photographs include over 100 shots of various Ladies reunions from the 1950s through the 1990s. These pictures show members eating, dancing, installing officers, and socializing with each other and with men from the 32nd Division Veterans Association, who held their reunions at the same time. Other photographs show Ladies members who compiled a cook book, many of their group presidents, entertainer Joe E. Brown (who was a special guest at a reunion), the home of General Edwin F. Harding, and a ceremony at the Wisconsin National Guard military ball at which the newly formed 32nd Infantry Battalion inherited the honors of the 32nd Infantry Division. |

Formed with the immediate goal of opposing state legislation that eroded the protections guaranteed to lesbians and gays under Wisconsin's Fair Employment Law, the group later dedicated itself to promoting equality in many areas: alternative families, criminal justice, health care, housing, political participation, and public accommodations. LRN sponsored "Community Speak Outs" that brought together public officials and members of the gay and lesbian community; held candidate forums for federal, state, and local races; met with public officials; gathered information about local hate crimes; and networked with other local gay and lesbian organizations. The organization dissolved in 1993. |

The collection primarily consists of Rubin's collected files of leaflets; reports of activities, some written by him in journal form; notes, affidavits, correspondence, and articles. The papers illustrate his work in southwest Georgia and Mississippi with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the Council of Federated Organizations, with the Southeast Neighborhood House in Washington, D.C., as a student, and regarding his trip to Cuba. Five tape recordings concern a race relations meeting, probably held at Antioch College; CBS news coverage of the 1963 March on Washington; a report on a discrimination case in Yellow Springs, Ohio; and the plight of persons assisted by the Southeast Neighborhood House. The entire collection was loaned for copying. |

The collection includes drafts, scripts, news clippings, and publicity materials for Shue's plays, poems, and writings, including The Foreigner, Grandma Duck is Dead, The Nerd, and Wenceslas Square. Includes an extensive number of Shue's letters to and from colleagues and friends concerning personal matters and their careers, heavily annotated scripts of productions in which Shue acted, and Shue's score for My Emperor's Clothes. Of particular interest are Shue's diaries, dating from 1958 to 1985. Paintings and drawings, done by Shue or by his friends and family for him, are included. Also included is the Chicago Report, a family newsletter written by Shue's father, providing details on the family's activities, careers, and travels especially to the Far East. The collection contains a recording of the memorial service at the Todd Wehr Theater following Shue's September 1985 death in a plane crash. A book of tribute put together by Shue's family, as well as letters to the family after Shue's death, are included in the collection. |

Gram's letters to his wife and father discuss his training in mapping and aircraft identification, recreational activities, and his living arrangements. Gram's letters to his children encourage them in their education and future achievement while their letters in return relate their school activities and home life. |

The files relate primarily to the Door County area, which Johnson represented, and to work on the Education Committee and other committee assignments. Well documented is proposed legislation relating to parochial schools, the Governor's Task Force on the 1965 Social Security Amendment (Medicare), the Legislative Council Interim Education Committee, and the Task Force on Local Government Organization and Finance (the Tarr Committee). Several speeches and miscellany constitute the only non-legislative material in the collection. |

(6 archives boxes and 1 oversize box) of photographs Call Number: Milwaukee Mss 168; PH Milwaukee Mss 168 Abstract: Official records of the Milwaukee, Wis. art school which was established by Charlotte Partridge and Miriam Frink in 1920 and closed due to financial insolvency in 1974. At its closure, the school was regarded as one of the top five art schools in the country and enjoyed a historical reputation for innovative methods in art education. Included are minutes of the Board of Trustees/Directors; correspondence; and administrative, financial, curricular, legal, historical, public relations, building, registrar's, and student-related materials which provide a broad look at the school's operations and methods. Records primarily cover the period from 1954 to 1974 and coincide with administrative terms of Layton directors Edmund Lewandowski (1954-1972) and Neil Lieberman (1972-1974). Files pertaining to the faculty union established at the school in 1971 and subsequent grievances and lawsuits indicate increasing hostilities between Layton administration and its faculty. Much of the material, including a separate file maintained by Board chair Carl Moebius records the school's traumatic closing. Photographs, mostly dating from 1954 to 1974, document Layton classrooms, art education, student projects, and some of the exhibitions held at the school. There are also views of the building, faculty, Layton Art Gallery, and student life. |
