Abstract: Papers of an Ozaukee County native who acted as a highly visible contributor to the Milwaukee theater community during the 1980s and 1990s. Sharon McQueen acted in various capacities as founder, producer, creative director, and actress, for the local theater companies Clavis Theatre, Theatre Tesseract, and Next Act Theatre. Collection includes correspondence, administrative records for the companies, personal photographs, press clippings, production profiles, and video recordings of many of the different companies' productions.

Abstract: Appraisal forms for residential, mercantile, and manufacturing property in the city of Shawano. In each folder is included penciled diagrams for most blocks and lots, showing block boundaries, lot dimensions, and names of property owners, as well as 107 numbered reassessment blueprints of residential, mercantile, and manufacturing properties, 1956. Some folders and/or appraisal forms are missing. Box 4 contains appraisal forms based on Assessor's Plats of areas recently incorporated into the city of Shawano, forms for Mercantile Property on Leased Land, and Reassessment blueprints. Residential property forms show name and address of property owner, location of property, land value factors, a building description, a computation of structural value, three annual assessment summaries, and a final statement of assessment value. Mercantile property forms show name and address of owner or tenant of property, location of the property, land value factors, building value factors, a description of special equipment, a computation of structural value, three annual assessment summaries, and a final statement of assessment value. Manufacturing property forms show name and location of business, the use of each building on the property, structural data, machinery and equipment present, a computation of building value and a total adjusted sound value, three annual assessment summaries, and a final statement of assessment value.

Abstract: Papers of a lyricist, consisting of correspondence, business records, scripts, production material, and music and lyric manuscripts for seven Broadway musicals. For the highly-acclaimed Fiddler on the Roof (1964) on which Harnick collaborated with Jerry Bock, the collection also includes musical manuscripts for songs not used in the production as well as some legal correspondence relating to motion picture rights. Also well covered are The Apple Tree (1966), She Loves Me (1963) and To Broadway With Love (1964).

Abstract: Papers of Shelton Stromquist, an historian and social activist who was involved with a number of political and social action organizations, including: Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, 1961-1966; the Honeywell Project and the Committee of Returned Volunteers while he was program director for the American Friends Service Committee in Milwaukee, 1968-1970; Indochina Peace Campaign and the New American Movement while at the University of Pittsburgh, 1971-1975; and the Coolee Community Action Program in southwestern Wisconsin, 1975-1978. The collection includes personal notes, writings, and correspondence, as well as printed literature, and is most complete in its documentation of the printed informational materials produced for national distribution. There are also extensive materials relating to the local and regional groups in which Stromquist took an active part, in particular: Pitt Professional Union, American Federation of Teachers; Milwaukee Independent School, Free University, and Independent Learning Center; Citizens for Safe Energy, Gays Mills, Wisconsin; and the Rural Politics Discussion Group, formed by Stromquist to discuss political and social issues of interest to the rural community of southwestern Wisconsin. Stromquist's personal papers include information and working papers for a proposed book on Cuba; notes for talks on imperialism, civil rights, and war and economics; articles written about Cuba; experiences working with the Mississippi Freedom Summer project; and notes organizing a protest of Joseph H. Blatchford's policies as director of the Peace Corps.

Abstract: Papers of Sherman Booth, a 19th-century Wisconsin abolitionist agitator, politician, lecturer, and publisher. Includes correspondence concerning Booth family affairs; miscellaneous school and church materials collected by Booth's daughters while living in Connecticut; Civil War soldiers' medical examination records; family diaries; and school notebooks of Lillian May Booth, one of Sherman Booth's daughters. The majority of the collection consists of approximately 3,000 letters. Only about 145 were written by Sherman Booth; the rest concern the family of Adeline P. Corss (mother of the second Mrs. Booth). There are also school and church items which were acquired by Mary Ella and Lillian May in the course of their work; and copies of Booth materials held elsewhere.

Abstract: Transcripts and audio cassette tapes of interviews conducted as a class oral history project at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Sherman Park Community Association formed in 1967 to address concerns about conditions in the neighborhood. The interviews, conducted as part of the Association's 25th anniversary, deal with member's recollections of neighborhood activities and projects, race relations, redlining and real estate companies, home ownership, politics, and school desegregation.

Abstract: Records of Milwaukee's oldest and largest neighborhood group which document its involvement in economic and business development, residential improvement and diversification, bringing the arts to Sherman Park, and the effort to prevent the Park West Freeway from being built. The collection contains extensive information about the SPCA's attempts to end practices such as "red lining" (refusal to insure homes in certain neighborhoods) and blockbusting (scaring home owners into selling their homes) which were designed to prevent people of different color, beliefs, or sexual orientation from moving into an area. The records include numerous photographs of the Goblin Parade, a Halloween event for children; protest marches; Kwanzaa celebrations and many more activities. The collection also contains information about City West Arts (a committee of the SPCA dedicated to bringing the arts to the neighborhood), the Sherman Park News, and considerable information about surveys of Sherman Park, including actual surveys, data collection reports, documentation concerning the surveys, and final results.

Abstract: The Sherman Park Rainbow Association (SPRA) was the first LGBT neighborhood organization in Wisconsin. Information about the formation of the SPRA in 1993 is found in the articles of incorporation, a grant application to the Cream City Foundation, and early newsletters. The newsletters and meeting minutes provide the most comprehensive information about SPRA, although the minutes span only a three-year period. The collection includes scant documentation of SPRA's work with the Sherman Park Community Association and local LGBT organizations. A press release, ca. 2002, describes the end of the organization.

Abstract: Photographs made by Sherwin Gillett, an itinerant photographer who traveled throughout southwestern Wisconsin from 1910 to 1935. His photographs document businesses, celebrations, small town life, disasters, farms, and tourism locations. The collection documents daily life in Wisconsin during the early twentieth century. In particular, it shows how changes, such as the development of the automobile, affected the built environment.

Abstract: Blue line architectural drawings collected by Shinji Yamamoto (probably while serving as State Architect of Wisconsin) of the Monona Terrace Civic Center designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and the Monona Basin Project by William Wesley Peters. The Monona Terrace Civic Center drawings include plans, elevations, and sections dated December 1, 1956 and February 15, 1959. These are believed to be the most complete set of drawings, either in copy or original, of the February 15, 1959 version of the Terrace. The one drawing for the Monona Basin Project is the development master plan which is undated.

Abstract: Papers of Shirley Clarke, a noted maker of experimental films. Included are personal and professional correspondence, clippings, research and financial material, some production information, and films and audio tapes generated at various stages of the filmmaking process. Best coverage is afforded The Connection (1960) and The Cool World (1963), studies of heroin addiction and life in Harlem. Small files exist on other works including Skyscraper (1959) (an Academy Award-nominated short subject), the Academy Award-winning Robert Frost: A Lover's Quarrel (1963), Portrait of Jason (1967), and films relating to her early interest in dance. There are also files on her awards, lectures on film and film techniques, and activities in the Filmmakers Distribution Center; general correspondence referring to business and professional matters; and journals and other biographical materials.

Abstract: Copies of photographs collected and originally bound in a photograph album by Flora Shivers of Hillsboro, Wisconsin, dating 1887-1937 (bulk 1909-1937). Photographs primarily document the major families in Hillsboro, including the Shivers, Revels, Roberts, Waldons, and other families. Other images document unidentified and partially identified groups and individuals, as well as local businesses, schools, barns, and several images of George R. Smith College, Sedalia, Missouri, the alma mater of Alga Shivers.

Abstract: Records of Shorewood Players Theater, a community theater group in Shorewood, Wisconsin, directed by Curt Haensel (1939-1971) which performed annually from autumn through spring. In addition to putting on approximately five performances every season, the Shorewood Players also held an acting clinic for aspiring young performers. Included in the records are playbills, reviews (mainly from the Milwaukee Journal and Sentinel), photographs, writings pertaining to a particular play's background, correspondence, and one scrapbook.
