Call Number: WVM Mss 1324 Abstract: Papers and still images pertaining to Garrie W. Hainer, a West Allis, Wisconsin resident who served in the Milwaukee Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol during World War II and also served with Headquarters Battery of the 65th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion stationed on Okinawa during the Korean War. Hainer was fifteen when he served with the Civil Air Patrol. During his service he collected clippings taken from newspaper and magazine articles pertaining to new equipment and vehicles used during the war. The articles include photographs and brief statistics about various airplanes, tanks, vehicles, ships, and munitions used by both Allied and Axis powers during the war. In one instance he made a scrapbook from the articles and entitled it 'Information on Planes and Shells.' Hainer also collected articles about U.S. troops in the field and some memorial articles commemorating different battles a year after the end of the war. Hainer later enlisted with the Army and was stationed in Okinawa for eighteen months during the Korean War. The manuscripts include service records, military papers, and ephemeral items such as baggage tags, military identification cards, and two Christmas greetings; one from Hong Kong and one from Ryukyus Command that has an interesting drawing of Santa Clause on a military transport ship. Also included in the collection are manuscripts documenting Hainer's attempt to obtain the Korean War Service Medal for which he was denied due to the fact he did not serve on the Korean peninsula. The still images include loose photographs, a photographic scrapbook, and slides taken while Hainer was stationed on Okinawa. Images in the scrapbook and on the slides include those of Hainer and other soldiers relaxing around the base, close-ups of the anti-aircraft sites and radar stations, a USO show, and a targeting range for small arms fire. Also included are images of local towns, people, and island landscape. Some interesting images are those showing the death and destruction still visible from World War II. Loose photographs further document the scenery and local residents of Okinawa, and also show anti-aircraft artillery in action. |

The majority depict buildings, activities, and events at the University of Wisconsin. Images include meetings of the Board of Regents, athletic events, commencement exercises, and student demonstrations. Other subjects include student housing immediately after World War II, the bombing of Sterling Hall, the school band and University Singers, the Rose Bowl game in 1963, and campus Red Cross blood drives. There are also images of individuals, including Presidents Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, and John F. Kennedy and notables such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Bob Hope. Also included are plaques and publications. |

The oral histories consist of interview recordings, transcripts, as well as correspondence with, photographs of, and biographical information about interviewees. Interviewees describe their upbringing, family relationships, and sexual experiences in matter-of-fact and explicit terms. The collection also contains research materials used for writing the book, the interview protocol, early drafts of the manuscript, and publicity and promotional materials. |

Collection documents the history of GPU from its beginnings as a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student organization to its development as the most important gay and lesbian rights organization in Milwaukee in the 1970s. The collection also includes audio recordings of Gay Perspective, a radio program produced by GPU and broadcast on local radio stations from 1971 to 1972, and other public presentations given by GPU members as part the organization's educational mission. |
