(3 archives boxes) and 6 photographs Call Number: Mss 486; PH Mss 486 Abstract: Records of the GI Civil Liberties Committee, an organization (1968-1971?) which defended the constitutional liberties of members of the military who opposed U.S. involvement in the war in Vietnam. Included are correspondence, press materials, and research files on the legal cases with which GICLDC was involved. The legal files consist of military forms, statements and affidavits, clippings, letters of support and other correspondence (including two letters from Bella S. Abzug and George S. McGovern). They best represent the case of the members of GIs United Against the War in Vietnam known as the “Fort Jackson 8.” Also present are good records of the litigation concerning Edmund Jurenas, Joseph D. Miles, and Allen Myers. Internal correspondence is generally routine, though it includes interesting exchanges between the national staff and lawyer Leonard B. Boudin, numerous individual soldiers, and committee sponsor Ruth Gage-Colby. |

Quantity: 1.6 cubic feet (3 archives boxes and 1 flat box), 3 reels of microfilm (35 mm), 11 photographs, and 50 drawings Call Number: U.S. Mss Y; Micro 1117; PH 3696; PH 3697 Abstract: Papers of the Gibbs family of Rhode Island and Connecticut, consisting of chronological family and business correspondence for several members of the family, including George Gibbs (II, III, IV, V), Laura Wolcott Gibbs, Oliver Wolcott (her father), and Oliver Wolcott Gibbs. For George Gibbs III there is correspondence and business papers concerning his trip to China in 1796, a collection of minerals sold to Yale University, and family affairs. For George IV, ethnologist and geologist, there is correspondence on scientific concerns, social and economic conditions of Oregon and Washington Territory at the time of the gold rush; political letters discussing important men and events of the day and the Mexican and Civil wars, photographs and drawings, and various reports to George B. McClellan on the geological and ethnographic character of Washington Territory. From scientist Oliver Wolcott Gibbs there are letters to his family and friend William H. Channing concerning European scientists of the period and the political unrest which led to the Revolution of 1848. For George Gibbs V there is a 1918 diary concerning his work in Russia with the Railroad Commission. |

Quantity: 1 reel of microfilm (35mm) Call Number: Micro 15 Abstract: Correspondence of Gideon Winan Allen, who during the Civil War years was a student at the universities of Wisconsin and Michigan and was later a lawyer in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. The letters, primarily between Allen and his wife, Annie M. Cox, reflect the viewpoint of a northern Democrat, a Copperhead, concerning politics, military events, Negroes, and the draft. The 1872 letters were written during a trip to the South and are an appraisal of post-war conditions in rural and urban areas and describe an unfavorable reception for a northern lawyer. |

Present in varying quantities are diverse materials on production, distribution, promotion, and financing such as scripts, correspondence, fan mail, set designs, financial reports, and films. Motion picture files include material on an award-winning short subject, and on the feature-length films I Never Sang for My Father (Columbia, 1970), Oh God, Book II (Warner Bros., 1980), Rings Around the World (Columbia, 1966), and others. Television files include material on quiz shows, pilots, specials, and series. Most notable are the holdings on After the Fall (NBC), Camouflage (ABC), Electric Showcase (ABC), Picture This (CBS), and To All My Friends on Shore (CBS). Other files of scripts and correspondence pertain to Broadway productions including I Never Sang for My Father (1968), You Know I Can't Hear You When the Water's Running (1967), and other less successful productions. |

Doane, an Episcopal priest, director of the University of Wisconsin Libraries, University archivist, and genealogist, primarily documenting his unpublished biography of Jackson Kemper, the first Episcopal bishop of Wisconsin. Included are original sermons by Kemper; calendars, a card index, and other access tools to the Kemper Papers held by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin; and research notes and correspondence with members of the Kemper family and others such as Leslie H. Fishel and Clifford Lord of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. There are a few talks and articles about Kemper, but no draft of the full-length biography. Doane's clerical status is represented by general mailings from the Diocese of Milwaukee, mainly 1952-1968, and clippings and information about individual Episcopal congregations and Episcopal clergy in Wisconsin. There is also correspondence with the Wisconsin State Genealogical Society and photographs related to Grafton Hall and Nashotah House. |

The collection consists primarily of production files and includes technical materials for a variety of ballet, dance, opera, theater, and special productions. Some were the result of cultural exchanges with countries such as China, the Soviet Union, and Cuba. Personal, academic, and professional files comprise the remainder of the papers. The collection includes materials from Hemsley's work with the American Ballet Theatre, Bolshoi Ballet, National Ballet of Cuba, Stuttgart Ballet, Wisconsin Ballet Company, Boston Opera Company, Houston Grand Opera, Metropolitan Opera Company, New York City Opera, The Performing Arts Company of the People's Republic of China, and many other performing companies. Theater files are primarily from productions in Madison, Wisconsin, and in numerous regional theaters across the country. Among the special productions are Jimmy Carter's 1976 inaugural ball and an industrial show by Oldsmobile. |
