Included are clippings, correspondence, diaries, manuscripts, notes, photographs, printed materials, speeches, and a few records of the Federal Suffrage Association. Prominent correspondents include Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Olympia Brown, Belva Lockwood, Marilla Ricker, Ellen Sabin, and officers of the National American Woman Suffrage Association and other state and international suffrage organizations.

Abstract: Papers of Clarence Brown Lester, secretary of the Wisconsin Free Library Commission. A graduate of Brown University, Lester attended graduate school in political science at the University of Wisconsin and held posts at the state libraries of Indiana and New York before returning to Madison, Wisconsin. Papers cover both his personal and professional life (bulk 1900-1951) and include correspondence, newspaper clippings, family history, reports, publications, and other ephemera. Also included are photographs of family, vacations, and his residence in Wisconsin.

Abstract: Papers of Clarence Wentland, a Woodruff, Wisconsin, businessman, entirely concerning his leadership in the “Million Penny Parade” fundraising drive to build a hospital that would serve the Arbor Vitae, Woodruff, Minocqua, and Lac du Flambeau area of northern Wisconsin. This idea was suggested by Dr. Kate Pelham Newcomb. Included are clippings from newspapers and magazines relating to the hospital and to Dr. Newcomb; records of the hospital (Lakeland Memorial Hospital, Woodruff); and miscellaneous newsletters, publicity releases, photographs, and other papers. Correspondents include Adele Comandini, Ralph Edwards, Edward R. Murrow, and Arthur Rubloff. There is also a script for Dr. Kate's appearance on the This Is Your Life television program. The photographs document the dedication of the Dr. Kate memorial plaque at the hospital and other fundraising events. There is one photograph of Dr. Kate.

Abstract: Papers of Clarence Senior, a socialist, historian, and expert on Latin America. Although the bulk of Senior's papers relating to his years as executive secretary of the Socialist Party of America are at Duke University, this collection contains reports and memoranda of the national executive committee and solicitations for the Keep America Out of War Congress and the 1935 Continental Congress of Workers and Farmers. Other correspondence includes personal letters from fellow socialist Paul R. Porter and numerous references to activities in Mexico and Latin America. Prominent correspondents include Upton Sinclair and Norman Thomas.

Every tenth year All records prior to 1870 have been preserved. from 1870 to 1940 has been preserved, and every fifth year from 1945-1965 has been preserved. Holdings for 1940 are incomplete. Records are arranged by year and thereunder by property description for real estate and by the owner's name for personal property.

Abstract: Papers of Clark R. Jones, a prominent television director, consisting almost entirely of scripts and photographs for series which Jones directed, primarily the Bell Telephone Hour (NBC), The Carol Burnett Show (CBS), The Perry Como Show and Perry Como's Kraft Music Hall (NBC), Producers' Showcase (NBC), and The Sammy Davis, Jr. Show (NBC). Among the specials which Jones directed are the 1967 and 1969 Tony Awards and the first closed circuit theater television demonstration, a live presentation from the Metropolitan Opera House in 1952. Also included are films of two programs from Perry Como's Kraft Music Hall.

Abstract: Papers of a Pulitzer Prize-winning capital correspondent best known for his investigations of governmental corruption and mismanagement, conflict of interest, labor racketeering, and organized crime. The collection primarily consists of general papers, writings, and subject files, with coverage best for Mollenhoff's activities from the mid-1940's through the early 1970's. General papers include correspondence, speeches, notes, scripts and recordings of appearances on radio and television, and award exhibit books. The correspondence, 1945-1973, is partially indexed and includes letters from Ezra Taft Benson, Paul H. Douglas, Gerald R. Ford, Barry Goldwater, James C. Hagerty, J. Edgar Hoover, Hubert H. Abstract: A collection of photographs (both negatives and prints) taken by Claude Schumacher on Milwaukee's east side after the cleanup from the record-setting late January 1947 snowstorm had begun. Many of the images were made around the 2600 block of Downer Avenue, in the vicinity where Schumacher operated Claude's Bike Shop. Other images were shot outside Schumacher's residence, located in the 2000 block of Menlo Boulevard.

Abstract: Records of a special committee created by Winnebago County Board during 2007 budget deliberations to review the various county departments for opportunities to improve and become more efficient. Records include the committee's charge; agendas and minutes; a list of committee members; and materials documenting a similar committee in Sheboygan County. Also includes completed program evaluation questionnaires filled out by department heads describing each activity undertaken by the department. These forms captured, among other things, each program's goals and purpose as well as how it contributes to other aspects of county government. Also contains individual score sheets completed by each committee member as part of a program review. These scores were summarized in other documents preserving the total score for each committee member. The agenda and minutes from the committee meetings summarize the progress of the committee and give a brief overview of the departments and their functions. The Committee worked from March to October of 2007 at which time they presented their recommendations to the board.

Peck's papers concern a 1966 teach-in and contain correspondence with A. J. Muste concerning meetings which brought temporary unity to the anti-war movement.

The primary notes in the collection contain research charts and data, vessel logs, slides and notes related to Mortimer's work on Lake Windermere in England in the 1950s and across the Great Lakes in the U.S. throughout the 1960s to the 1980s, especially regarding his time at UW-Milwaukee as the first Director of the Center for Great Lakes Studies (now the School of Freshwater Sciences).

Included are correspondence, notes and reports concerning his study and teaching at Columbia University, his involvement with the American Association of State and Local History and the Federal Historical Records Survey in New York City and New Jersey, and his presidency of Hofstra University (1958-1973). Research materials and drafts relate to Clio's Servant (1967), his history of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin; the History of the United States Naval Aviation (1949); and his Historical Atlas of the United States (1944), among others.

Abstract: Legislative papers of Clifford Krueger, a former Senate Republican minority leader, 1975-1980, who served in the Wisconsin Legislature from 1946 to 1955 and from 1957 to 1982. Included are general and legislative correspondence, subject files, constituent problem files, and oral history interviews. During his long career in the Senate Krueger was well known for the moderate influence which he brought to the Republican Party because of his Progressive roots and for his advocacy of the interests of the northern part of the state. Unfortunately the collection includes no paper documentation which is earlier than 1968, and only the 1975-1982 period is covered well. Even for this period, the documentation is disappointing on many of the areas for which he is best known. This is compensated for in part by an extensive, separately-catalogued oral history interview. Topics which are well covered in the collection include aging, environmental issues, forestry, mining, the Bethesda Lutheran Home, the Lincoln Hills School, reapportionment, and UW-Medford.

Abstract: Papers of a news commentator who specialized in coverage of foreign affairs. The bulk of the collection is composed of radio scripts, mainly 1935-1960, and television scripts, 1949-1959. Utley broadcast his news reports and commentary over several Chicago stations, but the majority of the work originated from the NBC stations, WMAQ-WNBQ, either for local or network broadcast. In addition to scripts for his regularly scheduled programs on these stations, there are materials for specials, substitutions, and guest appearances; the BBC program American Commentary, 1945-1953; and Frayn Utley's program, 1940-1941, and her appearances in substitution for or in collaboration with her husband. Of the correspondence, 1938-1959, a few letters concern sponsorship and contracts, but the majority are from Utley's audience; these are accompanied occasionally by carbon copies of Utley's replies. Supplementing these papers are a few lectures and addresses, some of which were given in behalf of the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations. Utley also wrote a by-lined column for the Chicago Sun-Times, 1951-1953, which is available on microfilm in the Historical Society Library.

Abstract: The Clinton Woolsey papers document the academic and professional work of Professor Clinton Woolsey at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Woolsey held the Charles Sumner Slichter Professorship in Neurophysiology from 1948 until his retirement in 1975. Wollsey's papers include research data and lab notebooks as well as numerous visual representations of primate brains on many different types of media, including photographs, lantern slides, glass plates, among others. The collection also includes two linear feet of Woolsey's general files and five linear feet of correspondence.
