Abstract: Papers, circa 1985-2010, of Grace Gershuny, organic farmer, writer, educator, administrator, and consultant. Gershuny served as a staff member with the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) and was a main writer for several sections of the organic rule standards. She was involved with other organic and sustainable agriculture organizations, including the Organic Crop Improvement Association (OCIA), Organic Foods Production Association of North America (OFPANA), Organic Trade Association (OTA), Rodale Institute, and other national organizations. Gershuny's work as an editor, author, and teacher is also documented in the papers.

Abstract: Files documenting Gradwell Sears' roles as vice president for domestic sales, for foreign distribution, and as president of United Artists. The file consists of Sears' incoming and outgoing correspondence, and of the various reports and summaries received by his office. Included is correspondence with producers dealing with both routine matters and disputes involving production, distribution, and sales; correspondence with foreign and domestic executives of United Artists; and correspondence with other corporate bodies such as producers' associations (e.g., the J. Arthur Rank companies) and distributors' associations (e.g., the Motion Picture Export Association). Particularly interesting are folders dealing with corporate ownership and control and the related and complex problems of distribution in Great Britain (including negotiations with the Rank and Odeon Cinema interests).

Abstract: Papers of the extended Graham, Huston, McDonald, and Preston families of northern Wisconsin, Washington, Oregon, and California; consisting primarily of correspondence between women in the family concerning family life and finances, national and local politics, and Roman Catholicism. Correspondents include Martha McDonald Graham; her daughter, Winifred Graham Huston; Winifred's daughter, Emily, a member of the Madonna House Apostolate; and Catherine Doherty, founder of Madonna House; University of Oregon friends of Winifred Huston; Roman Catholic priests, nuns, and laypersons; and relatives in Hayward, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Also includes photographs, clippings, genealogical notes, diaries and notes, scrapbooks, financial and land records concerning the lumber business, and a reminiscence of the Civil War eagle, “Old Abe,” mascot of Company C, 8th Wisconsin Infantry.

Abstract: Records and photographs of the G.A.R. Memorial Hall and its custodians, with the bulk of the material dating from 1904 to 1965. A significant portion of the collection is from the tenure of Hosea W. Rood, the first custodian of the Hall. Custodian records include correspondence with veterans, G.A.R. officials, and the general public; newspaper columns, essays, poems, and speeches on patriotic themes written by the custodians; six diaries of Hosea Rood from the period during which he was Hall custodian; legislative records about the mandate and operation of the Hall; and correspondence and other records documenting the creation of the Camp Randall Memorial Arch in 1912. The collection also includes budget information about the operation of the Hall; lists of artifacts, flags, pictures, and books; and visitor registers, including a G.A.R. members only register dating from 1904 to 1914. Scrapbooks that were created by the Hall custodians or donated to the Hall comprise another large portion of the collection. Most of the scrapbooks feature news clippings about G.A.R. events, reunions, and members, as well as the Women's Relief Corps. Other topics covered include Abraham Lincoln, the assassination of President William McKinley, newspaper clippings containing letters from the 12th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, the First Wisconsin Cavalry, World War I and World War II, and a book of 'curious things' from the Civil War. The photographs series includes depictions of the Hall and its exhibits, including many views of the Gettysburg diorama exhibit, and also includes an extensive collection of Civil War-era carte de visites that were removed from one of the scrapbooks.

Abstract: Administrative, organizational, financial, and program materials pertaining to the Wisconsin state and local units of the Grand Army of the Republic, a voluntary fraternal association of Civil War Union veterans. Includes national and state encampment registers and records; materials concerning patriotic instruction in the schools, Memorial Day, and patriotism; administrative and financial materials of the state department and its relations with local posts; Easel-Shaped Monument certificates; and a few materials on the G.A.R. Memorial Hall which housed the offices of the state department. Many records pertain to individual Wisconsin local posts; including reports, membership records, charters, minute books, financial records, resolutions, and scattered correspondence. War reminiscences can be found in several “Personal War Sketches” volumes. Most complete are records for Post No. 11 (Madison), Post No. 20 (Janesville), and Post No. 68 (Chippewa Falls). Scattered records pertain to the National G.A.R.; mostly concerning patriotic instruction. The correspondence, records, and reports of Hosea Rood, 1920 National Patriotic Instructor, are included in this series.

Abstract: The Wilson Colwell G.A.R. Post Number 38 (La Crosse, Wis.) was named as a memorial to Captain Wilson Colwell from La Crosse, Wis. It was a post organized under the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), Department of Wisconsin in July 1882. The last member died in Sept. 1939. Records contain materials from the national office, the Department of Wisconsin office and the local Wilson Colwell Post Number 38. National materials include encampment material from 1905, music and lyric sheets, a ritual manual and a rules and regulations booklet. Materials from the Dept. of Wisconsin include encampment proceedings (1883; 1904-1907, 1913, and 1931), programs (1931 and 1939) and part of a registration book (1893), as well as rosters (1904 and 1906). Local Colwell Post created materials include a copy from the descriptive book from the Dept. of Wisconsin; financial materials (1882-1900), minutes (1891-1893), a roster (1906), and miscellaneous material.

Abstract: Records, mainly 1910-1998, of a Milwaukee church founded in 1847 as the Free Congregational Church, later known as the Spring Street Congregational Church, and renamed the Grand Avenue Congregational Church in 1881. The congregation became a member of the United Church of Christ in 1961. The church closed its doors at the end of 1997, the last service held on December 28. There is also information on the United Church of Christ merger and on participation in area ecumenical activities including Central City Churches, Inc., a consortium of urban churches largely concerned with providing aid to the elderly, hungry, and homeless. The photographs include exterior and interior views of the church, services, and the church's 117th anniversary celebration.

Abstract: Grandview Hospital, Inc., begun by Dr. William A. Henke (1881-1940), operated in La Crosse, Wis., from 1914 to 1969. An affiliated clinic and nurses training program were also a part of the hospital’s history. Materials include photocopied documents that remained at the former hospital building, such as association annual meetings (1943-1970); Grandview clinic and medical staff, land sales (1950-1957); merger talks with La Crosse Hospital (1951-1960); and miscellaneous correspondence (1943-1956). Other materials were gathered to complete a written history of the hospital by Anita Taylor Doering and William T. Doering. This includes biographical material on the medical staff and nursing school; general articles and other information on the hospital; clinic and nursing school; maps, drawings and notes related to properties; photographs; and the first draft of the paper Grandview Hospital: A Grand History written in 1999.

Abstract: Records of various school districts in Grant County, including Lancaster High School. The types of records vary by district but generally include minutes of annual meetings, financial records, teacher contracts, names of students enrolled, and attendance records. Teachers' registers include attendance and grade reports, as well as some instructional information on reading and other parts of the curriculum. Also included are school supervisors' records books that contain information on the staff, including teachers. Of note is a book of exam questions that were asked of those seeking entrance to the high school and exam questions for the various high school classes, 1887-1895. The images in this series represents both the day-to-day life of Southeastern Wisconsin rural schoolchildren, as well as the yearly fairs and contests in which they participated in the early 1910s. Many of the photographs are of students posed outside one-room schoolhouses, with some documenting the interior of the schools. Remaining photographs were taken at the Grant County School Contest, the Big Badger Fair in Platteville, or the Livingston High School Agricultural Fair.

Abstract: For each parcel of property, tax rolls show taxpayer, land description, acreage, assessed valuation, amount of various taxes, total tax, and record of payment. Certain volumes include special features: in 1840/1841, a record of lands sold for unpaid taxes; in 1849, a delinquent list; in 1864-1865, an assessment for a special Civil War bounty; in 1880-1896, the number and value of livestock and other items of personal property. Volumes for 1886-1889 are incomplete. Beginning in 1940, records are retained only for every fifth year.

Abstract: The Great River Festival of Arts, held in La Crosse, Wisconsin, was begun in 1960 under the leadership of Francesco “Frank” Italiano. What began as an interest in establishing a youth symphony and a short summer season for his Coulee Region Symphony, turned into a full-fledged summer festival of the arts, not only in La Crosse, but extending also to Dodgeville and later to Shell Lake and Superior, Wisconsin. The organizations that are described in this collection as part of the festival groups are the Coulee Region Symphony, the Symphony School of America, the Symphony of the Hills at Dodgeville and the Indianhead Symphony at Shell Lake. The festival’s names have changed through time. Initially it was called the Coulee Region Music Festival in 1960 and became the Coulee Region Arts Festival in 1961, then the Coulee Region Festival of Arts in 1963, and finally the Great River Festival of Arts in 1976. This festival continues to this day (2002). The Coulee Region Summer Symphony in 1960 became the Coulee Region Symphony in 1961 and then the Great River Symphony in 1972. Records, organized by concert season, include materials from the musical life of the festival (1960-1986) when it was under the direction of Frank Italiano. The festival programs; advertising posters; newspaper clippings; photographs that were in the newspaper; application information and forms for the Symphony School; lists of members of the symphony, board, and symphony school faculty; board reports; and a scrapbook created by Lenore Italiano, administrator of the festival, that gives an idea of the administrative components of the Coulee Region Symphony.

Abstract: The La Crosse Community Chest was first proposed by the Citizens Committee in 1932 and adopted by seven agencies later that year. By 1955, 19 agencies were affiliated with the Community Chest, and three new agencies were added in the 1956 campaign. During the 1965 campaign, the La Crosse Community Chest and Welfare Federation was renamed the La Crosse United Fund. In 1974 another name change was administered, as the La Crosse United Fund became the United Way of the La Crosse Area, Inc. The United Way of La Crosse underwent an operational reconstruction in 1997 by funding specific programs instead of the agencies themselves. Sometime after 1999, the United Way of La Crosse was renamed the Great Rivers United Way. As of 2012, this organization remains active. Records of the Great Rivers United Way include correspondence, files on committees and their activities, campaign and other advertising materials, financial records, photographs, scrapbooks, and other administrative files. Materials range in date from 1948 to 1999.

Abstract: Minutes of a non-profit organization of business and professional people, originally named the Beloit Commercial Club, dedicated to furthering commercial enterprise in the Beloit area. The group promoted tourism and city planning, urged industries to relocate in Beloit, lobbied for tax reform, promoted beneficial highway planning, and encouraged community pride through various projects.

Partners in GMCHP's founding included Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield and the insurer Blue Cross Associated Hospital Services of Wisconsin. The records include reports, correspondence, memoranda, and meeting minutes compiled by Dr. Russell F. Lewis, one of the organizers of the GMCHP.

Some records of the Milwaukee Phi Beta Kappa Foundation, Inc., which the association founded to collect and adminster scholarship funds, are also included. The collection contains records on the UWM Chapter documenting the charter application process including the extensive general report about UWM that was submitted to the national Phi Beta Kappa Society as part of the application, the charter installation in 1974, the president's correspondence (1973-1982), secretary's records which include correspondence, meeting minutes, and publicity (1973-1982), and the annual visiting scholar program (1974-1989).

Abstract: Volumes containing minutes, financial records, land records, maps, and miscellaneous records documenting river navigation improvement efforts of the Green Bay and Mississippi Canal Company (1866-1870) and its predecessor, the Fox-Wisconsin Improvement Company (1853-1866). Both were privately operated corporations organized to construct, administer, and finance improvement of the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers in order to improve inland water transportation between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River. Land speculation eventually became the focus of the corporation. Most records date from the mid-1800s and document canal construction, financing, and administration, water power leases, and land sales. Included are some records from the first efforts at improvement conducted by the Wisconsin Board of Public Works (1848-1853), plus fragmentary records of the Appleton Paper and Pulp Company, the Kaukauna Water Power Company, and the Fox River Power Pool, all of which operated in the Fox and Wisconsin River Valleys. On microfilm are three items concerning legal matters of interest to the Company. One folder contains typewritten copies of legal papers, 1866-1900, from the Wisconsin Secretary of State's files.

Abstract: Photographs of a historical nature found in the office of the prison warden. Included are interior and exterior views of prison buildings, the prison farm, quarry, and McNaughton State Camp at Lake Tomahawk; the staff; and educational and vocational activities of prisoners. Additional photographs depict the rotunda, nearby Tank Cottage, the aftermath of several attempted escapes, Green Bay in winter, the dedication of a court house memorial on the prison grounds (1934), and Pamperin Park. Several color photos removed from a scrapbook depict construction and a shakedown in 1980. Most of the images are undated, but the majority are believed to date from the pre-1979 period when the prison was known as the Wisconsin State Reformatory.

Abstract: Miscellaneous records concerning the development of Greendale, Wisconsin, one of three Greenbelt towns constructed by the U.S. Resettlement Administration. It includes a file from the U.S. Farm Security Administration pertaining to the selection of tenants and the application procedures and requirements. The Home Purchase Committee records document a 1949 attempt by some Greendale residents to purchase their homes from the federal government to prevent speculation on the property. The series also contains annual reports by the village board of trustees (1958, 1960, 1962, 1964-65); and capital improvement plans (1938-1967) regarding education, utilities, and community infrastructure.

Abstract: Papers of Greg Rouleau, an early twentieth century, upper midwestern vaudeville stock performer, magician, public relations executive, and radio manager. The collection focuses exclusively on Rouleau's involvement with stock companies during the early stages of his career and is composed almost entirely of scripts--both complete scripts and individual character's prompt scripts. Many are heavily annotated. A few of the scripts have Frank Winninger's name on them and probably were used by his stock company, the Winninger Players. Of interest are scripts for several cross fires, the short routines or one-liners used as a break between acts in vaudeville, and stories and synopses for short acts featuring either black performers or white performers in blackface. Also included are miscellaneous general flyers and announcements and a poster for the Slout Players, the Norma Ginnivan Dramatic and Vaudeville Company, and productions of “Crazy Politics” and “Front Page Stuff.”

Abstract: Papers of a foreign correspondent, author, and radio news commentator for WLW in Cincinnati, Ohio. The collection consists largely of radio news scripts for wartime programs such as Background on the News and Views of the News, but also includes some writings, correspondence, and memorabilia. Writings include a draft of an article for Look, a manuscript fragment of Two Thousand and Ten Days of Hitler (1940) written by Ziemer's daughter, and two chapters of an unpublished volume on life in Germany before World War II. The correspondence includes five boxes of listener mail, personal letters, and some exchanges pertaining to the production of news programs. Single letters are present from John H. Bankhead, John W. Bricker, Hans V. Kaltenborn, and Lyndon B. Johnson. The memorabilia includes clippings, programs, and press releases.

Papers relate chiefly to the fur trade in Wisconsin and the northwest; the War of 1812, particularly in Wisconsin; religious affairs; and the duties of Charles Reaum as justice of the peace. Also includes portraits and snapshots of the Grignon family and friends.

Abstract: Papers of an actor, comedian, and writer, including correspondence and copies of scripts for Animal Crackers (Para., 1930), Duck Soup (Para., 1933), A Night at the Opera (MGM, 1935), and eight other Marx Brothers films, the originals of which are held by the Library of Congress. The correspondence is between Marx and his friend, Dr. Samuel Salinger, the donor of this portion of the collection. Generally personal in nature, the letters contain references to socialized medicine, World War II, and Marx's career.

Huebner, a University of Pennsylvania professor of transportation and commerce, consisting primarily of annotated manuscript copies of his published works on the Panama Canal, foreign trade, the United States merchant marine, and railroad freight service. Also includes some class syllabi and examinations for graduate courses Huenber taught at the Wharton School of Finance, 1951-1955, and a large portion of his published “Traffic Lessons,” which appeared in The Traffic World, 1922-1923.
