| W.A. Roosevelt Co. | Title: W.A. Roosevelt Company Records Physical Description: 11.4 cubic feet Call Number: MSS 007 Abstract: Records, mainly 1888-1948, of the W. A. Roosevelt Company, wholesalers of plumbing, electrical, heating, and refrigeration supplies and appliances. The company began as a steam fitting shop in La Crosse, Wisconsin, in 1868 and was incorporated in 1888. It continues to operate today in La Crosse. The founder was La Crosse resident one one-time mayor, William Albert Roosevelt (1833-1894). Series that document the history of the company are historical materials, financial records, and salesmen's catalogs. Among the records are the historical materials (1801-1979) which include articles and correspondence of W. A. Roosevelt, articles and history booklets of the company, articles of incorporation and amendments, miscellaneous correspondence, legal documents, minute books, and stockholders' documents. Most of these materials have been photocopied; the originals remain at the W. A. Roosevelt Company. Financial records (1900-1948) consist of ledgers, journals and cashbooks. The final series, salesmen's catalogs (1902-1984), contain pictorial catalogs of radio, plumbing, electrical, and refrigeration supplies and appliances. |

(12 archives boxes) Call Number: Whitewater Mss W Abstract: Papers of Wackett, a Republican Assemblyman, who represented Jefferson County, Wisconsin (later the 39th District) from 1952 to 1976. Wackett served seven terms on the powerful Joint Committee on Finance, and acted as its chairman in 1967 and 1969. He also was a member of the Board on Government Operations, Legislative Council, and State Claims Board. The collection contains Wackett's files from his committee work; constituent correspondence and his replies; newsletters; bills, drafts, and related materials; and miscellany. |

Quantity: 198 film cans (16 mm) in 12 boxes, and 17 film cans (16 mm) with call numbers Call Number: M2013-013; AE 587-AE 599; CC 972-CC 974; FH 337 Abstract: Filmed news stories from WAEO-TV (Rhinelander/Wausau, Wisconsin), a television station and NBC affiliate which signed-on in 1966 and was originally owned by Alvin E. O'Konski. The station was off air from 1968 to 1969 due to an airplane accident that damaged the tower. In the 1970s the station was sold to a minority-owned company thus becoming the first VHF commercial television to be owned by minority interests. In 1986, the station call letters were changed to WJFW-TV to honor Jasper Williams, the CEO of the company that owned the station who was killed in a plane crash in 1984. The collection includes approximately 65,000 feet of color, 16 mm, sound and silent motion picture film which is for the most part identified by date. There are 38 reels of film that are undated but do have some subject description. Finally there are 19 reels of film that contain complete and incomplete special features and programs with titles such as Kaleidoscope, Mole Lake special, snowmobiling, Tower Paper Mill, and Hodag. |

(4 archives boxes) and 7 photographs Call Number: Mss 969; PH Mss 969 Abstract: Research papers compiled by Professor Maria Wagner in the course of writing her book Mathilde Franziska Anneke (Fischer Taschenbuch Verlag, Frankfurt Am Main, 1980). The papers include copies of correspondence (1737-1884) between Anneke and her family, friends, and associates, including Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Mary Booth (wife of Sherman Booth), and Cecilie Kapp; and copies of Anneke's published writings, including her play Oithono, poems, and stories serialized in newspapers. The collection also includes correspondence between Maria Wagner and Hildegard Blackwell and Ingeborg Smith, descendents of Anneke as well as several copies and reviews of Wagner's works and her research notes. Materials peripherally related to Anneke's life are also present in the collection such as information about the city of Milwaukee, women and the women's suffrage movement, politics, and common diseases of the time. A small collection of photographs, some taken by Wagner and used in her book, document, among other things, the building in Milwaukee that possibly housed the Toechter-Institut and Anneke's gravesite. The bulk of the collection is in German, much of it being handwritten in German gothic script. |

Several letters written by Wales from the Netherlands and Scandinavian countries in 1915-1916 reflect conditions in neutral countries during the war. |

Correspondence related to writing for the Boston Herald and career advancement comprise three folders. Educational records include research, papers, notes, and exams from journalism courses at Columbia University, an unfinished novel written under the direction of Archibald MacLeish while Wales was a Nieman Fellow, and lecture notes for a journalism course he taught at Boston University. Wale's writings consist of articles prepared for the Auburn (N.Y.) Citizen-Advertiser, the Albany (N.Y) Knickerbocker News, and the New York Times. Of particular interest are his editorials in the Boston Herald on military affairs during the 1950s and on medicine. Other material in the collection includes a diary kept while he was a photo editor of military news releases in 1944 and miscellaneous biographical and reference materials. |

His papers include descriptions of ocean travel, of missionary work, and of conditions in Africa, particularly among the Mpongwe language group of peoples, and historical accounts of French Equatorial Africa. The collection also includes papers of other members of the family: the diary of Aaron Walker, father of William, describing the journey from Maine to Rock County, Wis., in 1836; a few Civil War letters written by Albert, Charles A., and George Walker during their service in the 21st, the 22nd, and the 40th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry units. |

Star Trek (NBC) is among the less well represented series, though there is a noteworthy critique concerning character portrayal by series creator Gene Roddenberry. Also of note are files relating to Family Films, Inc., a company that produced films for the Radio and Television Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. These scripts and correspondence show the company's efforts to convey religious messages and themes through a format of popular entertainment. |

Correspondence, 1871-1962, deals primarily with family affairs, but occasional letters discuss the breakdown of Czarist rule in Russia and the development of revolutionary spirit in Poland and Russia (1905-1906), race riots in Springfield, Illinois (1909), the Socialist Party and its problems prior to and during World War I, and the Negro and trade unions (1929). Some references to American Federation of Labor policies and conventions are also scattered in the correspondence. The collection also contains typewritten copies of a few of Walling's articles and speeches on labor, the national economy, racial problems, and foreign relations, as well as newspaper clippings and miscellaneous materials pertaining to his career. Among the writers of letters to Walling are Albert J. Beveridge, Francis Biddle, Bruce Bliven, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Glenn Frank, John P. Frey, William Green, Hamilton Holt, W. L. Mackenzie King, Raymond Moley, Edward A. Ross, Upton Sinclair, William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, and Matthew Woll. Copies of a few letters written by Walling to Mrs. O. H. P. Belmont, Eugene V. Debs, H. M. Hyndman, Theodore Roosevelt, and President Woodrow Wilson are also among the papers. In the family letters written by Mr. and Mrs. Walling (Anna Strunsky) there are some scattered, and usually very brief, allusions to Clarence Darrow, Samuel Gompers, Herbert Hoover, Jack London, Henrik Shipstead, Rose Stokes, and others with whom they had associations. |

Van Hise, Althea H. Bardeen, Gertrude E. L. Slaughter, Ana M. Ely, Dorothy R. Mendenhall, and Louis Kimball Matthews. The club met monthly during the academic year at a member's home during which a talk or paper would be presented by a member on a subject of personal interest or expertise followed by general discussion. The records consist of biographies, mailing lists, presentation papers, and notes and minutes of the meetings. The Walrus Club disbanded in 2012. |

A variety of miscellaneous matter appears in the file including information on censorship considerations, script changes and lists of employees in various categories, music cue sheets, and insurance records, along with extensive correspondence, notes, and inter-office memos. The bulk of the material is dated between 1938 and 1940. |

The annual report section provides aggregate statistical information regarding number of students, teacher salaries, enrollment figures, and financial statements. The census section provides names and information about persons less than 20 years of age residing in the school district, some family information, and student attendance and enrollment records. Preliminary Classification Reports include curriculum information, daily program of study, condition of the schoolroom and grounds, library and books used, and teacher's name, address, and teaching experience. Files for some schools contain photocopies of news clippings; information on curriculum and course handbooks; programs for dedications, concert, and plays; correspondence with teachers, parents, and other administrators; and information on school staff and school activities. |

The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence to and from Donald John and Neil during World War II (1940-1945), and a scrapbook belonging to Donald John relating principally to his service. Most of the correspondence is from Donald John and describes life in training, in Africa and in Europe; he served with the 1st Infantry Division and landed in France on D-Day and was wounded in action June 15, 1944. Neil, a pilot, served with the 743 Squadron, 455 Bomber Group, was captured and held prisoner at a German POW camp, Stalag Luft 3, and in his letters communicates a few details of life in the POW camp. Robert (Bob) also served as a pilot, although there are very few materials relating directly to him in these papers. Also included are biographical materials, and family and Army camp photographs. |

Call Number: WVM Mss 55 Abstract: Papers and photographs of George J. Wanserski, a boatswain's mate in the Navy during World War II. The majority of the collection consists of letters Wanserski, a South Milwaukee, Wisconsin native, exchanged with his wife Florence during the war. The letters are long and fairly descriptive in chronicling both George's service with the Navy and the conditions Florence dealt with on the home front. George's letters describe his daily activities aboard a ship, the recreational activities of his fellow sailors, his Catholic faith, and his longing for his family. Florence's letters describe the growth and development of their children, the family's financial situation, and a slightly anti-German sentiment growing in the Milwaukee area. Also included are letters written by other family members to George. His military papers provide details about his service and include a continuous service certificate and summary of service in the Aleutian Islands. An undated watercolor painting, made by Wanserski, depicts the explosion of the Petersburg Mine during the Civil War. Several photographs show Wanserski and his family during the war. |

Files from Wasserman's award-winning television writing, which primarily date from the 1950's, are most extensive for Armstrong Circle Theatre (CBS), The Citadel (ABC), Climax (CBS), Kraft Television Theatre (NBC), DuPont Show of the Month (CBS), and The Power and the Glory (CBS). Also from this period are materials on the teleplay “I, Don Quixote,” written for the DuPont Show of the Month, which Wasserman subsequently adapted for the Broadway stage as Man of La Mancha (1965). Extensive holdings on this production include unused lyrics by W. H. Auden. Also well represented among his stage plays is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1963), the records of which include a script annotated by Ken Kesey, author of the book of the same name. Some items focus on the Iron Brigade, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and other Civil War battles, the Milwaukee Soldiers Home, and the history of several Wisconsin regiments. With these papers are comments on the proposal to place General Robert E. Lee's statue in Statuary Hall, Washington, D.C.; a collection of letters, 1864-1865, of General Joseph Bailey, then lieutenant colonel of the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry, relating to his actions during the Red River campaign of 1864; and a Waterhouse/Watrous family history. The correspondence is very incomplete, and although his duty as a paymaster in the Philippines has some coverage, there is no correspondence about Watrous' military service in the Civil War.
