Abstract: Papers of television executive, media consultant, and entrepreneur Sylvester L. “Pat” Weaver Jr., primarily documenting his professional career, beginning with his employment as an advertising executive at Young & Rubicam in the late 1940s. His subsequent years at NBC are also represented, although the majority of the collection relates to Weaver's various endeavors after resigning as chairman of the network. These include Weaver's attempts to start a fourth television network and to introduce cable television service in California, as well as his actions as a consultant for Kaiser Aluminum, Nelson A. Rockefeller, and for the clients of Wells, Rich, Green Inc.

Abstract: Papers of Caroline Webb, an African American woman from Iowa who lived in Madison and Chicago during the early twentieth century, documenting her family relations and friendship with Henry H. Proctor through correspondence, her personal finances, and the deaths of her son and parents. The materials also document the experiences of Webb’s son, Andrew, as a child growing up in Madison through a photograph album, circa 1920, and as a patient at the Municipal Tuberculosis Sanitarium in Chicago through a scrapbook he created, 1931-1934. Also present are several dozen photographic images of African American men, women, children, and infants (circa 1860s-1950s), funeral memorial cards, and portraits of Webb’s acquaintances.

Abstract: Papers, primarily composed of correspondence, writings and notes, and reference materials and clippings, created and collected by a radical activist and former national officer of the Students for a Democratic Society. A variety of papers illustrate Webb's activities with SDS and its major projects from 1962 until 1967, and his involvement with the National Conference for New Politics (which he helped organize in 1964-65), and the Chicago Jobs or Income Now (JOIN) project, and as executive director of the 1967 Vietnam Summer effort. A major portion of the collection consists of subject files on labor unions, which were probably collected by Webb as background for a newsletter published in 1966 in Chicago. Also represented in the collection are several of Webb's writings, including drafts of SDS position papers and college term papers, with notes and associated reference materials.

Abstract: Papers collected by Sarah Campbell Webb, a Madison, Wis., social worker employed by the Wisconsin Department of Health and Social Services, which reflect her participation in associations concerned with family life and adult education. As the community services consultant for southeastern Wisconsin, she coordinated numerous social service groups. In this capacity she collected program announcements, newsletters, clippings, mailing lists, and minutes; and generated her own correspondence and voluminous notes. She also compiled a “resources file” dealing with family problems and community action including bibliographies, catalogs, articles, papers, speeches, and lists of resource persons. The collection documents a variety of community activity and describes contemporary concerns regarding sex education in the schools, divorce, drug abuse, juvenile delinquency, and other social issues. Particularly well documented are the Dane County Council on Family Living, the Wisconsin Family Life Association, and the Adult Education Association of Wisconsin.

Abstract: Papers of William Webb of Lancaster, Wisconsin, consisting of correspondence concerning his well drilling business (1878-1880), letters from family and friends, a history of the family, and photograph of the family farm in Grant County, Wisconsin. Webb wrote many of his letters to family and friends in Grant County, Wisconsin; Galena, Illinois; and Houghton County, Michigan, while working in the iron mines in Upper Michigan (1873-1876). Also included are Webb's well drilling account books, 1876-1908, recording the date, location, depth, and amount of the transaction.

Frank Webster was considered a progressive farmer, known for integrating new farming methods, and his diaries include detailed descriptions of agricultural practices.

Abstract: Original cartoon drawings and sketches, published cartoons, memorabilia, and photographs of Harold Tucker Webster, a cartoonist raised in Tomahawk, Wisconsin who was best known for his work for the New York Herald Tribune. Best covered are the strips “Life's Darkest Moment,” “How to Torture Your Wife/Husband,” and “The Timid Soul,” which featured Webster's most famous character, Caspar Milquetoast. Memories of Tucker's Wisconsin youth are alluded to in many strips. Less well known themes concerned Prohibition, radio and television broadcasting, card games, and vacationing with automobile trailers. Except for a few colored drawings of “The Timid Soul,” all of the drawings are in pen and ink, some with blue pencil shading added for the printer. The sketch books primarily contain pencil portraits, but a few document scenes from a 1911 trip to China. The photographs consist of formal and informal portraits and snapshots of leisure time activities including his love of the circus. Several show Webster at a 1940 event with Thomas E. Dewey. The memorabilia includes promotional material, biographical information, and letters of commendation from Gertrude Stein, Theodore Roosevelt, and others. Some of the books of published cartoons in this collection were separated from the August Derleth comic collection.

Abstract: Papers, 1935-1983, of James Wechsler, a columnist and editor for the New York Post, an active advocate of civil liberties, and the author of several books, including The Age of Suspicion, which concerns the McCarthy era and the author's leftist connections. Subjects of Wechsler's memoranda include Che Guevara, Arthur Goldberg, Dean Rusk, and U Thant. Also included is his testimony from the McCarthy hearings in 1953.

Abstract: Records, mainly 1948-1992, of an independent leftist newspaper originally known as the National Guardian and established by James Aronson, Cedric Belfrage and John T. McManus in 1948. After reorganization in 1967 as a worker cooperative and a name change to the Guardian, the paper was a Marxist-Leninist organ. It ceased publication in 1992. The paper's early history is documented primarily by a reference library of publicity materials issued by numerous domestic social action and political organizations, labor unions, and foreign governments and advocacy groups. Among the topics are the civil rights of African Americans; the House Un-American Activities Committee; and numerous individual civil liberties, loyalty oath, and sedition cases. Also included are small quantities of photographic prints and negatives documenting staff and staff events as well as the work of staff photographers, 1951-1967, consisting only of contact sheets.

Abstract: Papers of Wegener, an opera tenor who was raised in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, including his reminiscences and autobiography, recorded reminiscences and songs, and three scrapbooks of reviews concerning his performances in operas and concerts and articles about his career. The reminiscences concern Wegener's youth and his career which included performances across the U.S., voice study and performing in Germany (1890-1893 and 1907-1912) and in England (1912-1914), and heading the Vocal Dept. at Marquette University (1918-1930). He describes his acquaintance with producer Henry W. Savage in the U.S. and with Professor Joseph Joachim in Germany.

Abstract: Papers and photographs of Bernard E. Weigel, a radio operator-gunner in the 466th Bomber Group of the 8th Air Force, who flew thirty-four missions over Europe during World War II. His military papers contain a large number of orders from the various military groups that he served in, flight records that document his missions in Europe, as well as his official separation records from the military. His personal papers include letters that he wrote home during the war, in which he describes his experiences at stateside camps as well as at Attelbridge, his base in England. There are also many newspaper and magazine clippings relating to his service on which Weigel has written short descriptions. The photographs document both the stateside and overseas portions of Weigel's military service, including many shots of his training at Camp Livingston, Louisiana while he was still a member of the 32nd Division. There are also five shots from his mission to deliver fuel to General George S. Patton's army in France. This collection also contains portrait photos of Weigel, pictures of his World War II crew, and shots of Weigel revisiting some of his bases in the second half of the century.

Abstract: Papers of civil engineer Robert Weigend, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin civil defense employee who specialized in fallout shelter surveying and planning. The collection documents his work on local civil defense efforts, especially relating to evacuation and fallout shelter planning in Milwaukee. Records date from 1951 to 1967 (mainly 1958 to 1965). Materials include civil defense informational handouts and pamphlets, assorted disaster plans, memos, agendas, maps, shelter information, research on creating a KP Corps, and other financial and administrative documents relating to the county and city’s civil defense procedures and preparations for nuclear attack. Also included are notes and research related to Weigend’s work for the Wisconsin Electric Power Company, as well as materials related to civil defense courses he taught to the general public and to architects and engineers.

Abstract: This collection includes a variety of published and unpublished booklets, pamphlets, flyers, newspapers, newspaper clippings, magazines, articles, essays, book chapters, etc. The majority of the materials relate to feminism, women's liberation, Vietnam War, gay and lesbian issues, African-American women, and the Black Panther Party. There are a few documents directly related to events at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the late 1960s, especially the Vietnam War protests. Materials are both from national and local sources.

Abstract: Papers of James Weinstein, an author, historian, writer, and editor of several left-wing publications, including Studies on the Left, Socialist Revolution, Common Sense, and In These Times. The collection (bulk 1970s-1980s) documents his role as founding editor and publisher of the newspaper/news magazine In These Times, which began publication in 1976. Throughout his long career as editor and publisher of In These Times, Weinstein sought to write about news not covered by the mass media. The papers include correspondence from contributors, other personal and professional correspondence, subject files, reviews, news clippings, published articles, and notebooks from his days as a student. Correspondents include Noam Chomsky, Eugene Genovese, John Judis, Staughton Lynd, and Ron Radosh, among others.

Abstract: Professional papers, 1958-2009, of Lee Weiss, a nationally known and acclaimed water colorist whose impressionistic paintings usually focus on small aspects of nature. Included is biographical information, general correspondence, exhibit catalogs, scrapbooks, and other items documenting her artistic career. The general correspondence pertains to exhibit arrangements, information or photographs of her work for catalogs or articles about her, painting sales and friendly continuing contacts with purchasers, and distribution of two publications: Lee Weiss, Watercolors and Lee Weiss, Watercolors II, The Seventies. A small amount of personal correspondence is included, as well as photographs relating to a trip to Asia.

Included are correspondence, financial records and a ledger, certificates, photographs, and a diary. The correspondence concerns family matters and various health care issues such as Lilian Welda's views on abortion and birth control and her observations about conditions in hospitals and clinics, and the nature of her medical training, and the deteriorating mental health and treatment of her brother LLoyd Tracey. Also included are discussion of education and teaching from her aunt Ida Johnson, a teacher in Ashland, Wisconsin, and accounts of a U.S. Navy submarine cruise to the Philippines and China in the early 1920s by Lester Tracey.

Included are scripts of the revised final version of his Academy Award-winning production of Citizen Kane (RKO, 1941), a play titled Bright Lucifer, and a proposed documentary on Latin America. Present in recorded form is the Mercury Theatre of the Air (CBS) radio program War of the Worlds, which was co-authored and produced by Welles. Additional items include corrections, lighting notes, and cues for the Negro People's Theatre production of MacBeth, which was directed by Welles.

Abstract: Assorted family and business papers of Wells, a Milwaukee railroad contractor and manufacturer of railroad bridges and equipment. In his varied enterprises Wells was associated with a number of Milwaukee and Chicago firms, including Wells and French; Wells and Chamberlain; Wells, Harrison, and Shute; and Wells, Harrison, and Greene. In a few family letters in the late 1840s Wells alluded very briefly to his interests in railroad construction in his native state of Vermont. Ledgers, letterpress books, 1877-1884, and other unbound correspondence and financial records contain references to work he did on railroad lines in Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Dakota Territory from the 1850s to 1884. Some letters contain references to his presidency of the Sheboygan and Fond du Lac Railroad, 1876-1879; his interest in promoting state legislation favorable to railroads; his investments in the Milwaukee newspaper Republican and News, in mining properties, and in real estate; and his speculations in the stock market. Miscellaneous family letters relate to Wells' wife, Helena Mary Lee, to their children, and to other members of the Lee and Wells families. Stereograph photographs in the collection document construction work along the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad near Lewiston, Ill., circa 1870.

Abstract: Manuscripts and photographs pertaining to Roberta Wells, a Madison, Wisconsin resident who served in the Women Marines during World War II. The collection includes materials from her service in the Marines and her political career after the war. The collection is mostly photographs from her time in the Marines. Manuscripts from her time in military service consist mainly of training materials and materials she collected while in service. Materials collected in service range from church bulletins and invitations to dances on base to a poem written by a fellow Woman Marine and sheet music written by a Marine she served with in Hawaii. The photograph collection includes official Marine Corps photographs of combat in Japan, Marines and Women Marines in Japan and on base in Honolulu and personal photographs. Photographs from her time in the Women Marines include candid images on base and during outings and more formal images taken by Wells and others of events on base. The range of photographs in her collection illustrates life as a Woman Marine during World War II. Also included in the collection are photographs from Milton Leidner, Wells' husband, who served in the 8th Air Force during World War II. Photographs include several images of himself and others in Europe. Materials from her political service are mainly articles Wells collected about issues she was involved in and concerned with. Wells served on the city board for Madison, Wisconsin and the transportation committee, making her main focus public transportation and the positive impact it could have on all of Dane County.

The papers concern Wells' professional activities and are often very technical in nature. Abstract: Papers of Clarence Wentland, a Woodruff, Wisconsin, businessman, entirely concerning his leadership in the “Million Penny Parade” fundraising drive to build a hospital that would serve the Arbor Vitae, Woodruff, Minocqua, and Lac du Flambeau area of northern Wisconsin. This idea was suggested by Dr. Kate Pelham Newcomb. Included are clippings from newspapers and magazines relating to the hospital and to Dr. Newcomb; records of the hospital (Lakeland Memorial Hospital, Woodruff); and miscellaneous newsletters, publicity releases, photographs, and other papers. Correspondents include Adele Comandini, Ralph Edwards, Edward R. Murrow, and Arthur Rubloff. There is also a script for Dr. Kate's appearance on the This Is Your Life television program. The photographs document the dedication of the Dr. Kate memorial plaque at the hospital and other fundraising events. There is one photograph of Dr. Kate.

Abstract: Papers, still images, and maps pertaining to the service of Robert Wetter, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, resident who served as a central fire control gunner on a B-29 Superfortress in the 883rd Bombardment Squadron, 500th Bombardment Group, 73rd Bombardment Wing, 20th Air Force, during World War II. The majority of the collection was originally contained in three scrapbooks, which have been dismantled for preservation purposes. One scrapbook contained training and World War II materials, the second contained World War II and Reserves. Also included is a third scrapbook containing post-war, veterans materials, documenting his trip to Saipan and Iwo Jima during the 50th Anniversary of the War. Papers include military orders and correspondence, training materials, personal letters and notes, news clippings, and informational booklets. Of interest is a note written to his mother, which set up a code of corresponding cities in the United States and in other countries to inform his family of his location. Still images are comprised of personal photographs taken during training for World War II, his service, and involvement in the reserves and a return trip to Saipan and Iwo Jima. Of note is a series of photographs from a supply drop on a Prisoner of War camp in Japan. Maps include three maps from his service: a large map of a training camp, a silk (parachute) map of the Pacific islands, and a partial map featuring the Islands of Japan. Other materials include papers from Wetter's time as an employee of the Department of Defense, including service and educational certificates.
