Abstract: Business and financial records of a leading Milwaukee bank from its organization in 1887 under the presidency of John Plankinton until its insolvency on June 1, 1893, under the presidency of Frederick T. Day, and for the ten years under the administrations of several assignees (including William Plankinton, Irving M. Bean, and Henry Herman) following insolvency. The bank closed following the loss of loans made to Frank A. Lappen & Company, a run on deposits, and a failure to reorganize and attract large investors. Records for 1866-1893 include ledgers of various types, registers of foreign items dispatched, correspondence, and other records. For the years after June, 1893, the papers relate to the operations of the several assignees, including assignments, court testimony and miscellaneous legal papers relating to litigation in Milwaukee County Circuit Court concerning the affairs of the bank, and assignee letter books.

Abstract: Planned Funeral Society of Wisconsin, formerly Thanatophely Ltd., was a nonprofit group closely affiliated with the First Unitarian Church in Milwaukee. Its purpose was to promote “the concept of dignity and simplicity in funeral rites”. The Society was a member of the Continental Association of Funeral and Memorial Societies, Inc., now known as Funeral Consumers Alliance. There were chapters in Wausau, Madison, Appleton, and La Crosse.

Abstract: The collection contains the personal papers of Dorothy Plautz of Greenfield, Wisconsin, a genealogist and writer. The majority of the collection consists of photographs and materials from scrapbooks compiled by Dorothy Plautz. She began assembling the scrapbooks around the time she met and married her second husband, Alan Brunka. The scrapbooks capture daily and special family events, such as hospital stays and vacations. Plautz continued gathering items that tell the story of her life and her family's throughout her divorce from Brunka, marriage to Paul Ogrizovich, his death, and subsequent marriage to John Plautz. The collection also includes short stories and family histories written by Plautz.

Abstract: Records of a company formed in 1938 to produce plays written by its members: Maxwell Anderson, S. N. Behrman, Sidney Howard, Elmer Rice, and Robert E. Sherwood. In subsequent years the company admitted Robert W. Anderson, Kurt Weill, and Roger L. Stevens and began producing plays by outside playwrights. The company dissolved in 1960. The bulk of the records relate to the business and legal aspects of theatrical production although information on the artistic aspects of production is also included. The documentation relates to the company's relations with some of the leading American and British theatrical personalities of its era. Among them are Marc Blitzstein, Harold Clurman, Katharine Cornell, Hume Cronyn, Jose Ferrer, Garson Kanin, Elia Kazan, Joshua Logan, Alfred Lunt, Guthrie McClintic, Jo Mielziner, Spencer Tracy, and Margaret Webster. The production files of the company's general manager relate to such award winning plays as Abe Lincoln in Illinois, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Darkness at Noon, Dream Girl, Fourposter, Ondine, The Patriots, Tea and Sympathy, and There Shall Be No Night. Included are extensively annotated stage managers' scripts, correspondence, budgets and financial statements, and contracts and agreements. About the organization and general development of the company there are correspondence and memoranda; general agreements and plans; financial records; and minutes of meetings on casting, play selection, and advertising policies. Some correspondence of individual playwright members is included. The collection also includes files on some productions with which Roger Stevens and General Manager Victor Samrock were independently involved. Samrock's files on Miss Liberty contain complete orchestrations by Irving Berlin. Stevens' files contain information on his association with the American Shakespeare Festival and Academy and Producers' Theatre.

Abstract: A history and secretary's book of the St. Croix County, Wisconsin, affiliate of the Wisconsin Extension Homemakers Council, formed to promote home and community life. Included are minutes, membership records, and descriptions of service activities and special programs. The club was originally named the North Valley Home Economics Club and from 1944 to 1954 was the Pleasant Valley Home Economics Club.

Abstract: Papers documenting the legislative career of John R. Plewa, who represented southern Milwaukee County in the 20th Wisconsin Assembly district and 7th Senate district. Plewa was the author of the 1988 Wisconsin Family and Medical Leave Act, which influenced the federal act of 1993. Other issues covered include government support for private schools, opposition to abortion, transportation and juvenile delinquency. Papers include speeches, newsletters, results of constituent questionnaires, articles and editorials written by Plewa, press releases, subject files and political memorabilia. The largest portion of the collection is the subject files, containing bills, amendments, memos, notes, correspondence, and research materials. The collection also includes political memorabilia, such as nomination papers, sample ballots, campaign reports, advertising proofs and newspaper clippings, mostly from Plewa's 1984 campaign for state Senate, as well as campaign literature from other candidates, newsletters from other people and organizations, awards and correspondence.

Abstract: Research material gathered by Thomas Ploss of Chicago, Illinois, for his book The Nation Pays Again, an unfavorable record of the dissolution of his former employer, the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad (The Milwaukee Road). Files include reports to stockholders, Interstate Commerce Commission briefs and exhibits, Securities and Exchange Commission hearing transcripts and audio recordings, and internal records of the Burlington Northern Railroad, whom Ploss considered an antagonist. There are also some notes and correspondence related to drafts of the book and the personalities involved in the case.

Abstract: Records of the second oldest church in Milwaukee, located on Milwaukee's East Side, dating from the church's founding in 1841 to the present. The collection includes annual reports and meeting minutes; financial records; membership records; newsletters and pamphlets; information about the church's pastors, including their sermons and research materials; photographs; and church club records including the Women's Guild. The collection also includes audio recordings of sermons, lecture series, and oral histories. Since its inception, Plymouth Church has been active in social, political, and religious issues, such as the abolition of slavery, temperance, and more recently, gay and lesbian issues, living with AIDS, and human rights.
