Abstract: Tape-recorded interviews with summary abstracts and one transcript generated by an oral history project undertaken by graduate students in the University of Wisconsin Women's History Program under the direction of faculty member Gerda Lerner. The interviews document 22 of the outstanding midwestern leaders in the twentieth-century feminist movement and explore the connections between the women's movements of the 1920s and the 1960s. Listed below, these women have been leaders in labor, education, politics, religion, and business at local, state, national, and international levels for as many as fifty years. The women interviewed are in many ways representative: seven are trade unionists and workers; eight are business women and professionals; six were full-time homemakers for more than a decade of their lives; four had political careers; two are Catholic women nuns. Three are African-Americans; many others are of immigrant families. What characterizes all of them is the broad range and long duration of their organizational commitment and activities.

Abstract: Records, 1924-1956, of the Dodgeville Mining Company (1939-1955), co-owned by Mansfield Richards and the mine managers, James J. MacDonald and Charles W. Singer, and of several other mining companies which were operating earlier in the same region including the Badger Mining Company (1924-1932), Wisconsin Zinc Flotation Company (1935-1937), Rule Mining Company (1935-1943), and the Vinegar Hill Zinc Company. The collection documents mining activities in southwestern Wisconsin primarily at the Simpson mine, the Dodgeville mine, and the Vinegar Hill mine; the company's financial and business operations; employees' benefits and wages; the company's Dodgeville Flotation Company affairs; and company interactions with the federal government regarding war-time supply and manpower management.

Abstract: Papers of a journalist and activist in leftist Madison, Wisconsin, politics. The collection documents Behm's involvements in organizations such as the Mass Party Organizing Committee (1971-1976), the Common Sense Coalition (1978-1979), and issues such as the case involving Michael Cooper, an AWOL ROTC student who died resisting arrest (1976-1977), the Peace and Jobs Referendum (1978-1979), the James Rowen mayoral campaign (1978-1979), and the Howard Morland-Progressive magazine hydrogen bomb case (1979-1980). Materials include correspondence, leaflets, broadsides, some organizational records, and subject files. Also included is a “War Resisters Organizing Manual” prepared by the War Resisters League in 1977. Photographs include images from several peace marches in Madison, Wisconsin Dells, and Waupun, Wis., circa 1976.

Abstract: Papers of Don D. Lescohier, a former industrial consultant and professor of economics at the University of Wisconsin primarily consisting of consultant reports and related materials, other writings, and bibliographies. For work done as a consultant for Allis-Chalmers there are reports on profit sharing and the closed shop, a personnel management course textbook, minutes of negotiations (1949), copies of form letters to employees (1946-1947) and a subject index of grievances. Also of interest are a photo scrapbook and interview notes for a study of the influence of the IWW during the harvest of 1921.

Abstract: Papers of Donald C. Slichter, a prominent Wisconsin business executive and civic leader documenting his later-life professional and civic activities. Slichter was president of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company (NWL), was active in Milwaukee civic and University of Wisconsin alumni affairs, and headed several educational studies. Besides materials such as speeches, awards, and related correspondence documenting Slichter's personal activities, this collection contains a large number of congratulatory letters written to Slichter as president of NWL which throw some light on the company's history and operation; correspondence between Slichter and Karl Paul Link, the Nobel Prize-winning biochemist. and with Warren Knowles, Governor of Wisconsin, 1965-1970; correspondence, reports, and newspaper clippings documenting many of Slichter's University of Wisconsin and civic activities; and a file of correspondence, writings, and clippings by and concerning Slichter's brother Sumner, a Harvard economist.

Abstract: Papers and still images of Donald E. Fisher, a Madison, Wisconsin resident who served with the PT boat squadrons of World War II. The collection includes a detailed photographic record of the progress of Donald's service, from his enlistment in Daytona Beach, Florida, service in both the European and Pacific theaters, to his discharge in Hawaii. Papers include his personal diary and manuscripts, which document the trials and tribulations faced by him and his fellow crew members. Of particular interest is the Blue Jackets manual which doubled as his diary, containing a detailed timeline of Donald's ports of call in the European theater of operations, photographs and a documentary on the skirmish between his squadron and a German convoy off the coast of Jersey, and memoirs and photographs of D-Day. Also included are photographs and records of Donald's family and his post-war life, which is illustrated in memoirs celebrating his life as well as correspondence detailing his graduation from college and job search after the war. Also included in the collection is a research file dedicated to documenting the PT boats and crews of the Second World War, organized by boat number, which includes a poster showcasing the unit art of each squadron from the war, a video documentary on the recovery of the wreck of PT 509, and a disc of digitized records and photographs both from Donald himself as well as other PT sailors he knew personally.

Abstract: Papers of Donald E. Francke, a distinguished American pharmacist and editor of several publications. As chief pharmacist for several large university hospital pharmacies and editor and publisher of several pharmacy journals, Francke was concerned with drug nomenclature, professional ethics, and drug information. From 1944 to 1963, Francke worked to improve pharmacy school curricula and the image and education of hospital pharmacists. Francke was also active in numerous professional organizations, and advocated establishing international ties among pharmacists. The collection includes correspondence, conference materials from European meetings and study missions, extensive materials on FIP conferences, 1953-1977, including copies of papers given at the Press and Documentation section meetings, speeches, research files, and writings.

Abstract: The collection documents Don J. Meyer's work in animal management since the 1970s. The collection contains Meyer's correspondence with zoos and other animal businesses regarding his work as a consultant, animal trainer, and animal care-giver. His business enterprise, Jo-Don Farms, Inc., located in Franksville, Wisconsin, was the focal point of his involvement in the exotic animal business. The collection also contains Meyer's general files regarding elephant and animal management, including a substantial newsclippings file about elephants. The collection also documents the emergence of Elephant Management, an organization dedicated to promoting the elephant species through a unique advantageous breeding program.

Abstract: Papers of Donald Mueller, former faculty member of University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, consisting of his avocational research into the history of urban public mass transit, George Francis Train, and the street railway industry in Milwaukee. Contents include photographs (largely in slide format), correspondence, research files, manuscripts, and ephemera and collectibles. While a few collected items including photographs date from the turn or middle of the twentieth century, the collection was compiled by Mueller in the 1980s and early 1990s when he was most active in his public transport collecting and research.

Abstract: Papers and photographs pertaining to the career Air Force service of Colonel Donald L. Heiliger, a Madison, Wisconsin native who served as a pilot in Vietnam, was shot down and held as a prisoner for six years, and served as an air attache' to several different countries. The collection is comprised of personal letters, invitations, correspondence, flight records, training materials, service records, military papers, certificates, information articles, and photographs documenting Heiliger's entire Air Force career. The majority of manuscripts pertain to his time as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. Heiliger was captured in 1967 after ejecting from his F-105 Thunderchief that had been hit by ground fire while flying a bombing mission over North Vietnam. Included are a few letters written by Heiliger to his parents and to his first wife, Carol, during his time as a POW. There are also letters written by Heiliger's mother to him while he was a prisoner. There is correspondence his parents received from government agencies and private organizations over Heiliger's status as a POW and efforts to have him released. Also found is a large collection of correspondence Heiliger received after his return home in 1973, mainly from people who had worn his name on POW remembrance bracelets. Also included are cards and welcome home signs that were made by Wisconsin schoolchildren and Madison residents. Other manuscripts pertaining to his POW time include materials pertaining to his reorientation program after his release, regulations and instructions regarding mailing items to POWs, and articles collected by his parents pertaining to the Vietnam War and American prisoners. There is also a large collection of materials pertaining to his post-Vietnam service as an air attache' with Uruguay, Chile, and Israel. Included are military papers and reports from his time spent working with each country, along with a large collection of personal invitations and thank you letters he received. Other manuscripts from his service include military papers and reports from his ROTC training and his service as a navigations instructor, flight records spanning his entire career, medical evaluations, and various certificates and promotion-related documents. Photographs in the collection also cover his entire service. Included are group images from his ROTC and Air Force navigation training classes, a few images of Heiliger posing next to an F-105, and a group image of he and his fellow pilots on nuclear alert while stationed in South Korea. Images from his attache' service include group photographs at events, Heiliger posing with various United States Air Force generals, and some group images from his assignments abroad. Of particular interest is a photograph taken during the signing of the first agreement between the United States Air Force and the Israeli Air Force. A few images of 9/11 attack on the Pentagon round out the photographs. Also included in the collection is a visual recording of a press conference given by Heiliger after release and return to the United States in 1973. The film shows Heiliger answering questions about his time in prison, his thoughts about the war protesters, and how he was adjusting back into everyday life. The end of the film is comprised of footage taken of Heiliger landing at an airport and meeting his parents.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1967-1972, of Donald O. Peterson, a liberal leader of the Wisconsin Democratic Party. The papers document Peterson's work in state and national Democratic party politics and reform initiatives. Major subjects include Peterson's leadership of Eugene McCarthy's 1968 presidential campaign in Wisconsin (available only on microfilm); his participation in the New Democratic Coalition (1968-1973), the Commission on Rules of the Democratic National Committee (1969-1972), and the Democratic Charter Commission (1973-1974); and his unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign in 1970. Also of interest is material on Peterson's involvement with George McGovern's 1962 senatorial campaign and Edmund Muskie's 1972 presidential campaign.

Abstract: Papers of Donald Sanford, a motion picture and television writer. Television files, which are most extensive, consist of correspondence, clippings, synopses, and scripts, many bearing informative annotations. Best represented of Sanford's many television credits are the series Bonanza (NBC), Days of Our Lives (NBC), Ellery Queen (DuMont), The Felony Squad (ABC), Gunsmoke (CBS), Laramie (NBC), The Loretta Young Show (NBC), M Squad (NBC), Martin Kane, Private Eye (DuMont), Passport to Danger (CBS), Perry Mason (CBS), The Plainclothesman (DuMont), Telephone Time (CBS), and Thriller (NBC). Motion picture files contain extensive revisions of seven screenplays including Casino Royale (Columbia, 1967, with Ben Hecht), The Ravagers (Columbia, 1979), and Midway (Universal, 1976). Also relating to the last named film are several drafts of the novel which Sanford adapted from his screenplay. The remainder of the collection consists of a few radio scripts, subject files containing correspondence and clippings, and miscellaneous business and legal papers.

Abstract: Correspondence of a publisher of the Madison-based Wisconsin State Journal, together with occasional clippings, reports, and speeches. The files deal almost entirely with Anderson's work as publisher and contain exchanges with Emmanuel P. and Philip D. Adler and Lee P. Loomis of the Lee Group of newspapers, which owns the State Journal, and with William T. Evjue, who joined Anderson in the formation of Madison Newspapers, Inc. Other correspondents include Aaron Bohrod, Chester B. Bowles, Erle Stanley Gardner, Roy L. Matson, Richard M. Nixon, William Proxmire, Frederick A. Seaton, Wendell L. Willkie, Frank Lloyd Wright, and a host of prominent Wisconsin politicians. Also of interest are substantial files on the early history of the paper, the Lee Group, World War II censorship, and correspondence from Madison-area servicemen.

Abstract: Papers of peace and civil liberties activist Donna Allen, who began her activism with Women Strike for Peace (WSP) in the 1950s. The collection documents her involvement with many groups, most notably Women Strike for Peace and National Conference for New Politics, of which she was a member of the executive board. Also reflected in the papers is Allen's heavy involvement in the anti-Vietnam War movement, especially with Women Strike for Peace and the Washington Mobilization Committee. Additionally, the collection includes the anti-Vietnam War files of fellow activist Margaret Russell (Women Strike for Peace).

Included is footage of horticulture spraying and ground spraying; men digging trees, brief shots of Hobb's Nursery, and unloading trees at Fruit Growers Cooperative in Sturgeon Bay; and cherry harvesting by young migrant workers from Jamaica and Mexico (according to the description in the film can), and images of a peach crop and apple harvest.

The posters were produced for display in the interior of the cars, and inside and outside the buses and trams. Batty designed posters for the Underground Group and London Transport from 1921 to 1938. In the 1920s and 1930s, Batty designed more posters for London Transport and the Underground than any other female artist.

Abstract: The Doris Slesinger Migrant Farmworker interviews contains the original interview schedules for three rounds of interviews collected by the University of Wisconsin-Madiosn Department of Rural Sociology between 1978 and 1998 on the healthcare needs and access of migrant workers, particularly Spanish speaking, around the state of Wisconsin. The interviews collected demographic data as well as data concerning specific health issues, the availability of doctors, and access to resources like dental care and Spanish speaking health care professionals.

Abstract: Papers and photographs of Dorothy Dannies Alexander, who served as an officer and company commander in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) during World War II from 1942 to 1944 and was active in the Milwaukee chapter of the WAC Veterans Association. Papers from her service as a WAC officer include correspondence, personnel records, and a 1942 WAC officer training script. Five scrapbooks with numerous newspaper clippings and other memorabilia document her career, life at the military bases at which she served, and the broader world of the WAC. WAC Veterans Association papers include correspondence, convention business and activities documents, and newspaper clippings. Held in Milwaukee, the 1949 and 1965 WAC Veterans Association conventions are particularly well documented, as Alexander was instrumental in the organization of those conventions. The collection also contains a scrapbook and 1972 correspondence of Alice Watson, of Riverside, California, who served under Alexander in the WAC and was also active in the WAC Veterans Association. The correspondence includes reminiscences about the WAC and the scrapbook contains photographs taken at WAC Veterans Association conventions. The photographs in this collection document life at the three posts where Alexander served: Camp Grant (Illinois), Fort Custer (Michigan), and Camp McCoy (Wisconsin). Included are many candid and posed photographs of WAC soldiers at work and recreation, inspection visits by superior officers, and a 1944 WAC field services event in Wausau, Wisconsin. The WAC Veterans Association photographs are mostly posed groups from conventions from the 1940s to 1960s. The collection also includes a small number of personal photographs.

Abstract: Papers of Dorothy Dignam, one of the first women copywriters in the advertising business, chiefly consisting of examples of her work for the McJunkin and Vanderhoff advertising companies of Chicago and N.W. Ayer & Son, of Philadelphia and New York City. Clients include the Ford Motor Company, Marshall Field & Company, and Cannon Mills. The advertising dates from Dignam's early career, and it reflects her specialization in women's products and advertising addressed to women. Also included are educational materials and radio scripts about women by Dignam and other members of the Philadelphia Club of Advertising Women; materials she prepared as head of the Defense Committee of the Advertising Women of New York (AWNY) during World War II; materials for Advertising Careers for Women (1939), a book edited with Blanche Clair; and other materials. The photographs are portraits and images used for Ford Motor Company advertising and for AWNY Defense Committee advertising.

The programs of her exhibitions and the scrapbook are of primary importance because they document her life as an artist.

Abstract: Papers created and collected by Dorothy Zellner with contributions from Robert "Bob" Zellner, two civil rights activists who worked for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the Southern Conference Educational Fund (SCEF) during the 1960s and early 1970s. Most of the materials are near-print items, with some original correspondence, memos, reports, and notes, concerning SNCC, SCEF and its Grass-Roots Organizing Work (GROW) project, among white southerners and many other civil rights and labor organizing groups. Among the other topics treated are the seven-month strike of Local 5-443, International Woodworkers of America against the Masonite Corporation, in Laurel, Mississippi and the Gulfcoast Pulpwood Association. Few personal papers are included; among them are autobiographical and biographical writings; other writings and correspondence; and a few items pertaining to Robert's father, Rev. James A. Zellner, and his civil rights activities. The tape recordings include a meeting of poor white people from Sunflower and Bolivar counties in Missisippi with GROW representatives in 1968 and an account by Robert Zellner of his early civil rights experiences and the couple's role in the formation of GROW. The photographs portray picketing by the Boston Friends of SNCC in 1965 and various unidentified meetings and rallies.

Abstract: The collection contains the personal papers of Dorothy Plautz of Greenfield, Wisconsin, a genealogist and writer. The majority of the collection consists of photographs and materials from scrapbooks compiled by Dorothy Plautz. She began assembling the scrapbooks around the time she met and married her second husband, Alan Brunka. The scrapbooks capture daily and special family events, such as hospital stays and vacations. Plautz continued gathering items that tell the story of her life and her family's throughout her divorce from Brunka, marriage to Paul Ogrizovich, his death, and subsequent marriage to John Plautz. The collection also includes short stories and family histories written by Plautz.

Abstract: Research papers compiled by Dorothy Skuldt, nee Randall, of Madison, Wisconsin, primarily documenting her mother's relatives who, after living in New England and Mid-Atlantic states for most of the eighteenth century, settled in south-central Wisconsin in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Best documented are the families of Bell and Randall, both having moved to Wisconsin between the 1870s and 1890s and settled in the towns of Shopiere, Beloit, and Janesville; less extensive are her files on the families of Austin, Clark, Culver, Dye, Haviland, Skuldt, Swingle, Van Bommel, Van Vranken, and Yates. Included are news clippings, correspondence with genealogists and relatives, research notes, and rough family trees. In addition there are some photographs, many of which are identified; they include portraits, group shots, and pictures of churches and family homes.

Abstract: The Colwell-Dorset Family were prominent pioneers in La Crosse, Wis., originating from New England. Key family members include Nannie Hammer who married Capt. Wilson Colwell, who was killed in the Battle of South Mountain in 1862 during the Civil War. They had one daughter together also named Nannie Colwell. The widow Nannie Colwell then married Rev. C. P. Dorset, an Episcopal minister. The couple had several children together: Marian, Helen, and Bernard Dorset. The collection has been divided up into four series: personal correspondence, business correspondence, genealogical notes, and miscellany. Because of the long span of correspondence, everyday family life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in the Midwest is well documented. The papers consist mainly of correspondence among members of the Colwell-Dorset family. There are also some travel diaries, business correspondence, genealogy material, and miscellany.

Abstract: Records of a Douglas County mental health institution located in the town of Parkland that was opened in 1909 and operated under various names until closing in 1991. Throughout the institution's lifetime it served as an asylum, poor house, tuberculosis sanatorium, and home for the elderly, and maintained a farm and garden. The records document the administration of the facility and provide limited information about the residents. Administrative records include minutes of the board of trustees (1909-1958), financial records (1913-1938), monthly population statistical reports (1951-1956) and correspondence (1951-1956) and correspondence (1955-1956). Patient records contain biographical data and information on the patients' physical condition and care. Cemetery and death records provide record of the facility's residents and others buried in Parkland Cemetery, 1900-1946, and information on some individuals who died while at the institution from 1916 through 1965.

The project consists of 212 identified slides that were taken from the original collection of 1000.
