Abstract: Papers of Ada James, a social reformer, humanitarian, and pacifist residing in Richland Center, Wisconsin. Family correspondence, 1816-1904, contains material on her parents, David G. James and Laura Briggs James; these papers reflect her father's interest in employment for women, woman suffrage, spiritualism, birth control, and socialism. Among the volumes are also diaries, 1865, 1882-1904, and proceedings of the meetings of the Wisconsin Woman's Suffrage Association, 1885-1903, kept by her mother. Ada James' correspondence dates 1890-1952 and documents her suffrage activity in the Political Equality League, the Wisconsin Woman's Suffrage Association, and the National Woman's Party; and her work on behalf of pacifism, prohibition, and progressivism. After 1925 her correspondence deals principally with social work, particularly the founding and development of the Children's Board of Richland County.

Abstract: Poetry, plays, literary writings and newspaper articles by and about Bartosz, editor-in-chief (1954-1973) and editor (1937-1954) of the Stevens Point Gwiazda Polarna. Among the newspaper articles is a series which comprises his 1931 “History of the Polonian Press” in the United States, articles about prominent individuals connected with the Polish press, and his compilation of Gwiazda Polarna news clippings, circa 1968, entitled “60 Years of Gwiazda Polarna, Stevens Point and 105 Years of Polish Press in America.” There is also a run of Bartosz's weekly column in the Gwiazda Polarna, 1938-1940, 1959-1970. Bartosz's personal writings include a short play, a one-act sketch, typewritten poems, and a handwritten volume of poetry, dated 1917. Most of the material is in Polish. Also included is correspondence, as well as other records related to Polish heritage activities.

Abstract: Papers of Schesch, a Madison anti-war activist, containing correspondence, reports, minutes, writings, and printed matter pertaining to a variety of organizations with which he was prominently involved. Among these are the Madison Committee to End the War in Vietnam, the National Coordinating Committee to End the War in Vietnam, the Student Peace Center, the University of Wisconsin Committee to End the War in Vietnam, and the Vietnam Civic Action Research and Education Project. The tapes are an oral history interview concerning his experiences with the above organizations and a 1973 press conference concerning experiences during the September, 1973 coup in Chile.

Abstract: Records, 1935-1942, of the Adams County, Wisconsin, Mediation Board which was empowered to mediate actions on the foreclosure of mortgages on real estate. Case files contain copies of the notice of hearing, summons, and complaint in foreclosure cases handled by the Mediation Board, with a report giving a summary of the hearing and recommendations of the board. The minute book contains testimony related to each case presented before the Board. The Mediation Board was formed by Chapter 319, Laws of 1935 and dissolved when the legislation expired in 1943.

This collection consists of lecture notes and slides created and used by Adell Patton in courses he taught at the University of Missouri; oral histories on audio cassette with medical practitioners, predominately from African countries; notes Adell Patton took on sources consulted in the creation of his work "The Ningi Chiefdom and the African Frontier: Mountaineer Culture of Resistance to the Sokoto Caliphate, ca. 1800-1908" as well as photographs and professional correspondence.

Abstract: Records of Wisconsin National Guard and State Guard service. Information is contained on 3-inch × 5-inch cards and includes enlisted and officer name, home address, birth date and place, physical characteristics, enlistment date, term years, organization, station, previous service, date of discharge and cause of discharge, and related information. Services include: National Guard Service including part of WWII (yellow cards), State Guard WWI (blue cards), State Guard WWII (pink cards), Wisconsin State Guard Reserve WWI (peach cards), and Naval Militia (pale blue cards). The cards are also available on microfilm. Also included at the end of the paper series is correspondence with the War Department, 1920-1926, with corrections for some of the records.

Abstract: Correspondence of Adolphus Nelson, a Republican Congressman from Grantsburg, Wis., 1918-1923, relating to national legislation of these years, and particularly to the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence waterway project. Included are numerous copies of letters addressed to President Coolidge in 1924 in behalf of Nelson's appointment to the International Joint Commission. Other subjects are soldier legislation, the Soldiers' Land Bill, adjusted compensation, and war risk insurance; agricultural legislation, including amendment to the Federal Farm Loan Act of 1916, proposed rural credits legislation and the Norbeck-Nelson Bill, Muscle Shoals Dam appropriation, and other topics of concern to farm organizations; and prohibition. Miscellaneous correspondence relates to the appropriation for the United States Employment Service in 1919, proposed tariff legislation in 1920-1921, postal rates legislation and postal employees' salaries, rivalry between Superior and Duluth in regard to customs collections, personal election campaigns, local issues, services for constituents, and speeches. There are occasional letters from officials and faculty members of the University of Wisconsin to Nelson in his capacity as president of the Board of Regents, and a few letters from clergymen of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Abstract: Papers of Spies, a writer for television and film, consisting of notes, synopses, scripts, scene breakdowns, correspondence, clippings, and miscellaneous writings. The majority of the collection focuses on his television and motion picture work and concerns television programs such as Climax (CBS), Desilu Playhouse (CBS), Dr. Kildare (NBC), Robert Montgomery Presents (NBC), Studio One (CBS), The Walter Winchell File (ABC), The Bold Ones (NBC), Felony Squad (ABC), A Man Called Shenandoah (ABC), and Star Trek (NBC); and motion pictures such as Dark of the Sun and Guns for San Sebastian. Also included are many outlines and pilot scripts for other series. A file dealing with the Star Trek series includes several memoranda from Gene Roddenberry, the series creator, which offer general guidelines for writers who authored early scripts and which discuss topics such as the personalities of the running characters, sets, technological devices of the future, and storylines. The films are recordings of his award-winning teleplays “Edge of Truth” for Studio One and “Island in the City” for Climax.

Abstract: Records of Advanced Harvesting Systems (AHS), a company created and funded by International Harvester to secretly develop a combine that could perform protein extraction from alfalfa in the field. The company was led by Bob Alverson and employed International Harvester engineers, including Ralph Baumheckel. The company eventually produced a working prototype. Records include reports, memoranda, and correspondence.

Abstract: Twenty-six episodes of Adventure at Scott Island, a half-hour adventure/drama series that ran in 1957 on CBS, and in 1958 on ABC. The series followed the attempts of David Scott, harbormaster at Scott Island in Massachusetts, to curtail crime and aid those in distress. The name of the series was changed from Harbourmaster to Adventure at Scott Island in 1958 when the program was dropped by CBS and picked up by ABC. All the films are 16 mm prints in black and white with sound. Each episode is approximately 920 feet long.

Abstract: Advertising ink blotters dating from the first half of the 20th century and consisting of 72 albums and miscellaneous loose blotters collected by George S. Baker. A significant portion of the collection consists of blotters from Milwaukee and other Wisconsin locales but blotters from other states are also represented. Subjects include automobiles and services, clothing, food, household goods, manufacturing, medicine (remedies and tonics), politics, and transportation. There are several folders and albums labeled miscellaneous which represent other advertising. The two oversize blotters are from Chevrolet and Union Mutual Life Insurance.

Abstract: Scrapbooks, 1912-1951, of the Advertising Women of New York (AWNY), a women's professional and service organization formed in 1912 and originally known as the League of Advertising Women. Some of the scrapbooks chronicle club history (1912-1949); contain invitations and meeting announcements; cover special events such as the 1931 Advertising Federation of America Convention, the club's 1940 consumer conference, and its Pan American fiesta in 1941. The remaining scrapbooks consist of award submissions to the Advertising Federation of America (1945-1951); some are fine examples of scrapbook art as well as highlighting the organization's public service and educational activities. Loose materials from the scrapbooks include many copies of the club newsletters, Advertising Women and Ab Libber, as well as membership rosters.
