Abstract: Papers of Pohl, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, elementary school teacher and conservation leader. The papers primarily consist of files on the conservation organizations of which she was president: the Milwaukee and La Budde memorial chapters of the Izaak Walton League of America. Included are minutes, agendas, bulletins, reports, and correspondence. Similar but less extensive material is included for the Environmental Education Council of Greater Milwaukee, the Wisconsin Council for Conservation Education, and other organizations. Subject files include correspondence on the Namekagon, Milwaukee, and Wolf rivers with noted ecologist Sigurd Olson, legislators Gaylord Nelson and Henry Reuss, and Walter Scott of the Wisconsin Conservation Department. Additional correspondence of IWL leader Haskell Noyes pertains to the purchase of Moon Lake in Fond du Lac County and its presentation to the State of Wisconsin. Of uncertain provenance is a file on the Walton Boosters, 1930. Some photographs depict conservation education; others show Pohl in a tintype portrait and with Arthur Molstad, Aroline Schmidt, Walter Scott, and teachers of the 68th Street School.

Abstract: Pohlman Studios was one of Milwaukee's earliest commercial photographic studios. The collection consists primarily of negatives as well as some prints and lantern slides. Most of the images depict industrial and commercial activity in Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin. Images show manufactured products as well as facilities, people, and processes involved in product creation. Many of the images were used in product catalogs. Taken in its entirety the collection provides a look at the industrial and commercial world of southeastern Wisconsin from the Great Depression into the 1990s.

Abstract: The William Pohlman Collection on Vietnam Gun Trucks contains two books of images and description of gun trucks as used during the Vietnam War, as well as some of Pohlman's personal recollections on his involvements in Vietnam and copies of some of his military documents. The content of these materials dates 1967-1972, but several items were produced in 2012.

Abstract: Records of Polanki, a club organized in 1953 to create interest in Polish culture and traditions, inspire American Poles with pride in their heritage, and sponsor the Polish exhibit and booth at Milwaukee's annual folk fair. Among the activities of Polanki which are represented by correspondence, administrative and financial records, news clippings, and other files are annual Easter teas, Polonaise balls, Chopin piano contests, scholarship and achievement awards, and St. John's Eve (“Swietojanki”) celebrations. Also well-documented is the work of two long-time Polanki leaders, Harriet Gostomski and Janet H. Branden.

Abstract: Incomplete records of the Polar Bear Association of World War II, a national association of veterans of the 339th Regimental Combat Team, 85th Division, collected by Ret. Lt. Col. Charles C. Isely, one of the group's founders. The collection consists of routine organizational records, particularly correspondence and bulletins informing members of upcoming reunions. Also included are some materials of another organization, the 339th Infantry Association, which was formed before the Polar Bear Association and later became a part of it. There are a few personal papers of Isely and small amounts of memorabilia and related World War I and World War II materials. The photographs document scenes from Russia during the Combat Team's service during World War I, from its service in Italy during World War II, and the Association's reunions.

Abstract: Records of a Milwaukee-based bowling association for Americans of Polish ancestry founded in 1928 by John A. Schultz and others. Included are articles of incorporation, a constitution and by-laws, correspondence, minutes, newsclippings, contracts and other legal documents, address lists, photographs, and records of the annual tournaments. The popularity of bowling among members of Milwaukee's (and Chicago's) Polish community is illustrated by the numerous entries in the tournaments. During the 1950s, this popularity declined and the tournaments were discontinued after 1962.

Abstract: Records of the Wisconsin Division of the Polish American Congress (Kongres Polonii Amerykanskiej) established as an umbrella organization in 1944 to promote the welfare of Polish-Americans, to work on behalf of Poland, and to fight communism. The collection includes by-laws and constitution, membership and administrative records (including minutes of annual meetings), publications, general correspondence, subject files documenting the group's interests such as defamation of Polish Americans, Pope John Paul II, the Milwaukee Kopernik and Millennium Committees, Polish ethnicity, and U.S. foreign policy. The collection also includes photographs documenting ethnic advocacy and education; and audio recordings of meetings.

Abstract: Records of Milwaukee Post #3 of the Stowarzyszenie Weterano Armii Polskiej, or Polish Army Veterans Association (PAVA). PAVA is an organization of Americans and Canadians who enlisted as volunteers in World War I and II service with the Allied Polish Army in Europe. After each of these wars, the duty of providing and securing financial relief for the disabled veterans fell to the association because these veterans of the Polish Army are not entitled to United States Veteran Administration benefits, and as Americans or Canadians they would not receive assistance from Poland. Post #3 was active in patriotic affairs, the life of the Polish community, and the national organization. Records consist of correspondence, minutes, speeches, newspaper clippings, and convention and anniversary books.

Abstract: Records of a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, organization dedicated to promoting the preservation of Polish language and culture in America through speakers, meetings, and the publication of articles relevant to the Polish heritage in the Polish language newspaper Kuryer Polski. During World War II, the club also worked to counteract anti-Polish sentiment in the local press. The records consist of a scrapbook compiled by Yolanda Majkowska and Szymon St. Deptula, which includes correspondence, meeting minutes, membership lists, newspaper clippings, and a dues record book. Some of the materials are written in Polish.

Included are two volumes of microfilmed minutes in Polish (1916-1926), of both the men's organization and the women's auxiliary; anniversary programs and histories; several district convention and bowling programs; a record book of service medals and Legion of Honor members; certificates; newsclippings; and a photograph of the 50th anniversary dinner, 1966.

Abstract: Records of a Milwaukee lodge of the Polish National Alliance (Zwiazek Narodowy Polski), organized in 1912 and for many years open only to native born sons of Polish pioneers. Included in the collection of this fraternal and mutual benefit organization for Polish Americans are a minute book, registration books, cash books, administrative and committee records, insurance records, general financial documents, news clippings; and eulogies, obituaries, and funeral records of deceased members. The papers were collected by former president Roman B. J. Kwasniewski, who was responsible for writing and delivering many of the eulogies during this period. Most of the items are in Polish and date from the late 1920s to late 1940s. This lodge was also known as the Sons of Polish Pioneers.

Also present is a 70th anniversary program of the Polish Legion of American Veterans Post No. 11 and a brochure in Polish promoting commerce in Milwaukee. The all-male membership of the lodge is composed primarily of Milwaukee professionals, politicians, and businessmen.

Also present are badges worn by lodge officers during ceremonies.

Abstract: The papers of Felix Pollak (1909-1987), a poet, translator, and former curator of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. It consists primarily of corrrespondence with notable poets such as Anais Nin and Henry Miller, manuscripts of published and unpublished works of poetry, and research for his translations. Much of his work as the curator at UW-Madison was devoted to further developing the Sukov Little Magazine collection, including correspondence with Martin Sukov, and correspondence and projects with Frederick J. Hoffman who wrote "The Little Magazine: A history and biography". There are some reels and audio cassettes of interviews, poetry readings, and his poems read by others. Abstract: Papers of a motion picture and television writer-publicist whose work was blacklisted during the 1950's as a result of mistaken identity. Scripts for radio, television, and motion pictures, many written under the name Joe Madison, form the major portion of the collection. Most television programs are represented by single scripts, though there are multiple titles for The Richard Boone Show and a sound recording of one episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Also included are many short stories and articles and a published copy of his book, Stork Bites Man. A small subject file contains clippings, information on the blacklist, financial and legal records, and correspondence. Relating to his work as a publicist for Universal is a 1938 memorandum describing the structure and operation of the studio's promotion department, financial records for a promotional tour for Back Street, and a bound compendium of Hollywood advertising, 1936-1937. Prominent correspondents include Linus Pauling and Clifford Odets.

Abstract: Papers of DeWitt Clinton Poole, a diplomat, lecturer, and educator who served in a number of diplomatic positions in the Soviet Union (1917-1922) and in Germany (1926-1930), who headed the Foreign Nationalities Branch of the Office of Strategic Services (1941-1945), and who was instrumental in the establishment of the School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University (1930-1939). The majority of the collection consists of rough notes and reference material for three courses he taught at Princeton and Harvard: Conduct of Foreign Relations (Govt. 32), Freedom Through Balance of Power (Govt. 115), and International Politics (Govt. 18) and an unidentified course on the Russian Mission, 1917-1924. Abstract: Records, chiefly 1964-1967, of the Poor People's Corporation (PPC), a non-profit organization founded in 1965 as a result of activities of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) to give financial and technical aid to low income groups in Mississippi to start cooperatives and other self-help programs. The papers relate to PPC, SNCC, and COFO activities and include correspondence, clippings, newsletters, press releases, organizational data, reports, and fragmentary files on individual cooperatives. The meetings of several of these co-ops are on tape. Of particular note is a letter and an article on PPC by Abbie Hoffman.

Abstract: Business records of the Potter Lumber Company (founded in 1921 in Calumet County, Wis.) and the Rudolph Greve Hardware Company (founded in 1924 in Kiel, Wis.), as kept by their tax consultant, Elmer E. Meyer. Meyer was on the board of directors of both companies and a brother of the founder and president of Potter Lumber Company, Henry L. Meyer, and a brother-in-law of the founder and president of the Rudolph Greve Hardware Company, Rudolph Greve. The records for both companies include board of directors and stockholders meeting minutes, ledgers, and journals, account books and related business records, and corporation tax returns. Records of the Potter Lumber Company also include inventory sheets and business correspondence. Correspondence concerning the sale of the Rudolph Greve Hardware Company, stock certificates for an unidentified H. L. Meyer Company, tax returns and related correspondence of Henry L. Abstract: Political papers of Calvin Potter, a member of the Democratic Party, mainly reflecting his years as a representative of Wisconsin's 9th Senate district (Sheboygan, Calumet, and Manitowoc counties) from 1990 to 1998, but also including material from his tenure in the State Assembly (59th district, Sheboygan Co.) from 1974 to 1988. The papers consist of biographical information, newsletters, press releases, speeches, and subject files which focus on legislation with which he was closely involved. Topics include credit unions, school mascots and Native American stereotypes, juvenile justice, “light” butter, pornography, DNA testing, tattoo legislation, and various police related issues, among others. The collection also includes a diary and correspondence from a 1986 trip to Japan funded through the Japan/United States Friendship Commission to study the Japanese education system.

Abstract: Transcribed and original letters written by Potter mainly from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin to family members in Massachusetts, and a few letters directed to her. The letters describe the life of a woman in territorial Wisconsin: household duties, raising children, religious and social life, and tending the sick. There is also mention of runaway slaves; national politics; outbreaks of cholera, smallpox, and scarlet fever; the local economy; descriptions of the family's land and livestock holdings; and attitudes towards new immigrants. Also in the collection are two letters (1885 and 1891) to Susan Potter DeGraff from two of her brothers (Hitty's children); several schoolgirl compositions; a 1911 clipping from a Wauwatosa newspaper giving details of the family history; and a typed copy of an 1864 manuscript about the history of the Johnston and Upson families. Most of the letters are photocopies of transcriptions, but sixteen are original letters.

Correspondence is informative on political matters of the pre-Civil War and Civil War periods; abolitionism and national politics; the Kansas constitutions; the proposed acquisition of Cuba; the difficulty of electing a speaker of the House in 1859; Virginian Roger Pryor's challenge of Potter to a duel; the investigation of the loyalty of federal employees by a House committee, 1861-1862; and distribution of patronage among Wisconsin Republicans. A number of letters written to Potter as consul general at Montreal and an exchange with C.A. Bronson of La Crosse, Wisconsin, concerning the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States are also included. Among Potter's correspondents were Simon Cameron, Salmon P. Chase, James D. Doty, James Kendall, Rufus King, Carl Schurz, William H. Seward, Caleb Smith, Charles Sumner, and C.C. Washburn.
