Reed of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, depicting sawmill operations, and related matters in the vicinity of Rice Lake and Long Lakes, Barron and Chippewa counties, Wisconsin, 1887-1900. Images show the Rice Lake Lumber Company office, hauling, camp grounds, shoeing an ox, logs at the sawmill, sawn lumber, and a Heron rookery at Long Lake. Also present is a reproduction of a photograph of lumberman Andrew Tainter.

Abstract: Papers of a Republican representative of Wisconsin's 24th Assembly District (Menomonee Falls area, 1980-1997) concerning her leadership and involvement in the development and passage of Wisconsin's Sexual Predator Law (Chapter 980) in 1994. Included is collected background and research information; correspondence; a file reflecting Attorney General James Doyle's involvement in developing the legislation; testimony given by Schneiders in support of the bill; newsclippings; information about the Sex Offender Treatment Program at Oshkosh Correctional Institution; a file concerning legal challenges to the law's constitutionality; and information about the Sex Offender Community Notification Program. Ms. Schneiders' files concerning the State Capitol and Executive Residence Board, of which she was a member since 1983 and the chairperson from 1987 to 1997, and her files on the Governor's Task Force on Comparable Worth have been transferred to the State Archives.

Abstract: Papers of Loni Kemp, an analyst and consultant on agriculture and environmental policy specializing in water quality, the Conservation Stewardship Program (“green payments”), and renewable energy. Kemp served as a senior policy analyst with the Minnesota Project from 1979-2008, and currently serves as an independent analyst through Kemp Consulting, a firm she founded in 2008. The papers document her activities as a policy analyst, speaker, writer, and advocate of natural resources protection and sustainable agriculture, as well as her involvement with other organizations, including the Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture (MISA), the Midwest Sustainable Agriculture Working Group (MSAWG), the Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (SAC), and the National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture (NCSA). Kemp was also a 2002-2004 Food and Society Policy Fellow.

Abstract: Papers of Lorinda “Lindy” Rhoades consisting of letters received from her pen pals in Germany and Scotland, World War II ephemera, and a Neenah Methodist Church booklet. Susi Herz, her German pen pal during 1937 and 1938, discusses political views in favor of the Nazi party, laws against interracial marriage, and personal views toward minorities. In contrast, Margaret, her Scottish pen pal during the beginning of World War II, discusses unfavorable attitudes toward Hitler and the Nazi Party. World War II ephemera consists of advertisements and letters Rhoades received from friends informing her that they joined the United States Army. Also includes a scrapbook Rhoades compiled while on a trip to Georgia with her mother in 1936 including illustrated pictures, maps, and handwritten descriptions of various sites.

Most of the collection focuses on his professional career and consists of script materials such as outlines, treatments, and variant scripts; correspondence; research materials; notes; production materials; and clippings. Miscellaneous writings, musical composition, and some personal correspondence with family and friends complete the collection. Among television programs represented are anthologies such as Armstrong Circle Theater (“Kidnap Story: Hold for Ransom”), CBS Playhouse (“Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night”), Kaiser Aluminum Hour (“Arm Game”), Lux Video Theatre (“A House of His Own”), Playhouse 90 (“Project Immortality”), and Studio One (“Shakedown Cruise”); made for TV movies The Coming Asunder of Jimmy Bright and The Trial of Chaplain Jensen, Breaking Up and Conspiracy; mini-series Sandburg's Lincoln and The Lives of Benjamin Franklin; and the soap opera series Love of Life. Abstract: This collection contains the records of a former publicist and member of the Milwaukee Board of School Directors. The papers mainly consist of correspondence and reports regarding Lorraine Radtke's career with the School Board and its various committees, such as the Special Committee on Equality of Educational Opportunity and the Committee on Instruction. These records also include a study, conducted by Radtke, examining the attitudes of teachers in the Milwaukee Public School System. Of interest are the materials relating to the segregation and integration of the schools. A small portion of the records reflect Radtke's other occupations and private life, including personal correspondence. The collection also contains newspaper clippings, fliers, and programs for the 1947 and 1948 season of Music Under the Stars sponsored by the Milwaukee County Park Commission.

Abstract: Papers, 1930-2008 (mainly 1960-1996), of Lorrie Otto (Mary Lorraine Otto), conservationist, teacher-naturalist, and natural landscaping advocate, documenting her involvement in hearings before the Wisconsin Conservation Dept. (now the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources) that led to the 1970 statewide ban of the pesticide known as DDT, and her continued efforts to preserve and advocate for the natural environment. Materials document Otto's research and collaboration with colleagues and conservation organizations prior to, during, and after the Wisconsin DDT hearings. Also documented is her work and activities associated with promoting natural landscaping and her involvement in conservation groups such as Citizens Natural Resources Association (CNRA), The Nature Conservancy, and Wild Ones. Frequent or noteworthy correspondents include Senator Gaylord Nelson, Environmental Defense Fund scientist Charles F. Wurster, and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources conservationist Walter Edwin Scott.

Abstract: The Lothar Meggendorfer collection includes over one hundred items related to German artist-paper engineer Lothar Meggendorfer (1847-1925). Meggendorfer created well over 100 children's books and gained international acclaim in the late nineteenth century. The collection consists primarily of large printing specimens of page samples and pictorial cover labels. Also included are proofs of illustrations and publishing advertisements, largely acquired from the collection of his second publishing house, J.F. Schreiber of Esslingen, Germany.

Abstract: Three episodes of Lou Grant, an hour-long dramatic series that ran on CBS from 1977 to 1982. The series, a spin-off from the comedy series The Mary Tyler Moore Show, followed the personal and professional life of the title character, an editor at the Los Angeles Tribune. The cast included Ed Asner, Mason Adams, Nancy Marchand, Jack Bannon, and Robert Walden. Gene Reynolds was executive producer. All the videocassettes are 3/4" U-Matic cassettes in color with sound. Call numbers VBA 195-196 and 200 are master copies, and call numbers VBA 272-273 and 277 are viewing copies.

Abstract: Papers of Louis Ropson, a resident of Dyckesville, Wisconsin, in Kewaunee County, who was a farmer, musician, and self-taught master violin, viola, and cello maker. The papers contain a considerable amount of information on the genealogy of the Ropson (Robson) and Collins families. There are numerous descriptive registers of archival collections in several cities and villages in Belgium, as well as other miscellaneous materials dealing with Belgian genealogy. Additional materials include his correspondence course materials; papers concerning the making of violins, violas, and cellos; runs of several music and Walloon literary journals; catalogs of musical instruments; scripts of some plays in Walloon; tape recordings of music and conversations in Walloon; a few phonograph records; and family photographs. The collection also includes a violin made by Ropson which is numbered “1”.

Abstract: Personal papers, mainly 1883-1938, of a member of a prominent Milwaukee family and president of the Louis Allis Company. The collection consists almost entirely of outgoing personal letters, although occasional items relate to financial investments, real estate management, and oversight of the Mechanical Appliance Co. (the forerunner of the Louis Allis Company). Only scattered letters relate to the E.P. Allis Co. or to Allis family interests in its successor company, the Allis-Chalmers Company. A large portion of the personal correspondence concerns Allis' first wife Carol Yates (from whom he was divorced in 1907); the rearing and education of their son, Edward P. Allis III; the management of the Louis Allis home; golf and other recreational activities; the beginning of the Milwaukee Country Club; the purchase and maintenance of automobiles; and the lives of other members of the Allis and Yates families. Six scrapbooks document the family's interest in golf, with scattered items relating to the E. P. Allis and Louis Allis companies, and the extended family. All of this material is available only on microfilm. Also on microfilm but partially copied photographically is an album of interior views of the E.P. Allis Co. factory, 1894. The collection also includes negatives selected from Allis' work as an amateur photographer which are not on microfilm and available only in Madison.

Abstract: Papers of Louis Lorman, a Russian Jewish immigrant who started a scrap metal business in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, in the early twentieth century. Included are newspaper clippings, correspondence, photographs, and advertisements focusing on the creation of Lorman Iron and Metal Company in 1913 and its growth into a recycler of scrap iron, metal, synthetic fiber, and paper. The collection also documents Lorman's participation in community affairs through the Tripoli Shrine, the Masons, the Knights of Pythias, the Boy Scouts, and his active participation in the Jewish faith through Temple Beth El in Madison. Newspaper articles concern too the business and political activities of Lorman's son, Milton. Much of the correspondence is written in Russian.

Abstract: Papers of Louis Lochner, a prominent foreign correspondent, writer, and news commentator, who wrote for the Associated Press (1924-1946) and published several books and numerous articles and short pieces. Lochner's area of expertise was German affairs, and he witnessed and reported on many of the most important events during the fall of the Weimar Republic, the rise of the National Socialists, World War II, and the return of peace. Most of Lochner's long and varied career in journalism and broadcasting is well documented, including his interviews with German leaders such as Adolf Hitler, Paul von Hindenburg, Joseph Goebbels, Hermann Goering, and others.

Abstract: Papers of a motion picture and television writer-publicist whose work was blacklisted during the 1950's as a result of mistaken identity. Scripts for radio, television, and motion pictures, many written under the name Joe Madison, form the major portion of the collection. Most television programs are represented by single scripts, though there are multiple titles for The Richard Boone Show and a sound recording of one episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Also included are many short stories and articles and a published copy of his book, Stork Bites Man. A small subject file contains clippings, information on the blacklist, financial and legal records, and correspondence. Relating to his work as a publicist for Universal is a 1938 memorandum describing the structure and operation of the studio's promotion department, financial records for a promotional tour for Back Street, and a bound compendium of Hollywood advertising, 1936-1937. Prominent correspondents include Linus Pauling and Clifford Odets.

Abstract: Civil War documents, 1862-1865, of Company D of the 24th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry compiled by Lieutenant Louis T. Battell. The papers consist of Muster Rolls and Descriptive Lists with pay and clothing records of individual soldiers, quarterly returns of deceased soldiers and of ordnance and ordnance stores, and monthly returns of clothing, camp and garrison equipage. In addition there is miscellaneous correspondence with the Ordnance Department, the Treasury Department, the auditor's office, and written statements of those who were lost from the regiment and under what circumstances.

Abstract: Papers of Louis W. Bridgman, a Madison, Wisconsin, journalist, mainly consisting of correspondence. Many letters pertain to Bridgman's career as a reporter for the Wisconsin State Journal, 1906-1913, and for the Associated Press, 1913-1930, and as editor for the University of Wisconsin Extension Division. The remainder of the exchanges derive from his interest in civic and historical affairs. Included is correspondence relating to the Saturday Lunch Club of Madison, 1914-1918, Lincoln Fellowship of Wisconsin, 1940-1960, and Antigo, Wisconsin. Correspondence with Albert H. Griffith and Boyd B. Stutler deals with Bridgman's interest in Abraham Lincoln and John Brown; Amos N. Wilder correspondence concerns the family of novelist Thornton Wilder; and John Earl Baker correspondence deals with Baker's various services for the Chinese government, 1916-1940s, when he served as famine relief director, Inspector-General of the Burma Road, and in other capacities.

Abstract: The papers and photograph of Louis Wayne Tyler, a warrant officer (junior grade) with the U. S. Army who served in Panama and Brazil during World War II. A majority of the collection consists of the letters Tyler wrote to his mother during his military service, from basic training, to Panama and Brazil, through the end of the war. These letters, written by a highly educated and intelligent man, reflect his feelings about serving in the Army, particularly in Panama, and contain descriptions of lodgings, food, and local attractions. Tyler was not pleased to be drafted into the Army in 1941, but he grew more satisfied with the Army as he served. He wrote about his confusion upon the attack on Pearl Harbor and the sensitivity of soldiers in Panama about their service and the fact that they were not actively fighting enemy soldiers. Other papers in the collection include newspaper clippings, cut out by Tyler's mother, relating to Panama, Brazil, Janesville men and women in the service, and Tyler himself. Also included are some articles and a dedication program (1943) for the Janesville Shrine of Honor monument. Personal military papers, such as certificates and a separation record, provide details about his service. Ephemeral items include menus from holiday meals in the Army, a silver star service flag card that his mother could display, a “win the war” postage stamp, and a unique recruitment flyer for the Women's Army Corps. Pre-war letters from Tyler's father, Louis J., to his mother describe the medical treatment he sought at the hot springs in Excelsior Springs, Missouri for an illness. The one photograph, taken from an elevated position, shows an unidentified World War II-era target range, as well as buildings and fields along the horizon.

Abstract: Papers of Tesmer, a Wisconsin state legislator from the 19th Assembly district, including correspondence with her constituents and a legislative subject file with letters from interested citizens and organizations of the state. The constituent correspondence reflects views on issues such as drunken driver arrests, broadened powers for the state patrol, campaign financing, state lottery, and public employees' right to strike. The subject file covers a wide span of legislative interests but most of the letters relate to budget bills or abortion legislation. There is almost no correspondence for 1976.

Abstract: Papers of Louise Phelps Kellogg, a notable American historian and a staff member at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Included is personal and professional correspondence, reference and research correspondence handled as a Society staff member, a subject index to this reference correspondence, articles and lectures, research notes, drafts and other papers concerning several of her book-length publications and her other research, an unpublished popular history of Wisconsin, files concerning the Mississippi Valley Historical Association (which she served as president, 1930-31) and the American Historical Association, diaries, and genealogical data.

Abstract: Papers of Louise R. Berman, a California social activist and philanthropist mainly concerned with the various left wing causes and organizations for which she worked and to which she contributed financially. Included are correspondence, speeches, reports, policy statements, minutes, publications, clippings, ephemera, and photographs. Files on social action organizations, 1931-1959, comprise almost the entire collection and relate to groups such as the American-Russian Institute, the Civil Rights Council of Northern California, the Democratic Youth Federation of California, the Rosenberg Foundation, and various other civil rights, civil liberties, political, peace, and anti-fascist organizations. Letters from prominent people in the arts and politics occur throughout. Personal papers, 1929-1958, include correspondence written during a 1933 trip to Russia and clippings and copies of testimony during her two appearances before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1948 and 1949.

Abstract: Louise Rowan Witherell recieved a PhD in French Literature from UW-Madison in 1948. She went on to be a full professor at UW-Green Bay. She won an age and sex discrimination case against UW-Green Bay in the late 1980s. Her papers contain correspondence, particularly from her time as a student in the French House at UW-Madison. They also include photographs, writing, research files, and files from her age and sex discrimination lawsuit.

Abstract: This collection consists of 317 episodes from the half-hour (1970-1971) / hour-long (1969-1970, 1971-1974) television anthology program Love, American Style, which was produced by Paramount Television and aired on ABC from 1969-1974. Each episode featured a lineup of different celebrity guest stars appearing in anywhere from one, two, or more vignettes about love and romance. The original series was also known for its 10 to 20-second drop-in silent movie-style “joke clips” between the featured segments.

Abstract: Elmer C. Low began Low & Dickson Motor Co. as a partnership with Harold L. Dickson after the two were salesmen at Elsen & Neeland Co. car dealership. The partnership dissolved in 1937 when Low bought out Dickson’s interest. Elmer’s son Jack started working for his dad in 1951. Franchises owned throughout the years included De Soto-Plymouth, Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln, American Motors and Jeep lines. The family sold Low Motor Co. in 1994 and began selling vehicles under the third generation’s name Steve Low’s Midwest Toyota in 1997. The collection mainly includes copies of newspaper clippings about the business and paid newspaper ads, 1937-1958. Other materials include clippings and photographs of the “Major Bowes Amateur Hour” publicity campaign in La Crosse in 1938, telegrams from De Soto about the Office of Price Administration’s (OPA) restrictions on selling passenger automobiles in 1942 during World War II, some clippings about Elmer C. Low, a few early photographs, and memorabilia.

Abstract: Papers of Lowell Klessig, a professor of environmental studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point who was active in the movement to block Project Sanguine, the U.S. Navy's Extremely Low Frequency submarine communication system. Included are papers collected by Klessig as an officer and founding member of the State Committee to Stop Sanguine (SCSS) including correspondence; press releases and other informational material issued by SCSS, the Northern Environmental Council, the Wisconsin Resources Conservation Council, and other ELF opponents; scientific and general reference material about ELF; and files on the Governor's Ad Hoc Committee on Sanguine. There is also a draft version and correspondence concerning publication of Klessig's book The ELF Odyssey: National Security Versus Environmental Protection (1980). Prominent correspondents include Les Aspin, Robert Kastenmeier, Gaylord Nelson, and William Proxmire and SCSS members Kent Shifferd and Charles H. Stoddard.

The records consist of financial records, membership records, and national constitutions and directories. The minutes describe decisions reached at the monthly meetings including appointment of officers and the support of members undergoing financial hardship. In addition to minutes and membership and dues, the national organization's constitutions and rituals describe the national and local associations goals and objective to offer assistance to one another and the community.

A few files pertain to the Wisconsin Legion's parent body, the Woman's Christian Temperance Union of Wisconsin.

Abstract: Civil War letters principally written by Loyd G. Harris, a lieutenant in the 6th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, Company C, to his sister, Nettie, and his brother-in-law, Otis (1860-1868). The letters include information on troop movements and duties, weather, health, Harris’ reflections on the Battle of Gettysburg during which he was wounded, and his thoughts on Lincoln’s assassination. The later letters detail Harris’ life after the Civil War ended. Also included are a few letters written on Harris’ behalf or written to Harris by others. The photographs are primarily portraits in carte-de-visite format of Civil War officers and contemporary women associated with Harris, circa 1861-1870.
