Abstract: Records of an organization founded to foster cooperation between Milwaukee area libraries. The collection includes reports, correspondence, memos, newsletters, financial records, meeting minutes, publications, library directories, and union lists. The records concern a wide range of library services and issues, including archives, collection development, interlibrary loan, interlibrary cooperation, automation, continuing education, legislation and public services. Organizational functions, including fund-raising, long-range planning and membership and public relations, are documented as well. Other materials of note include copies of the constitution, by-laws, organizational guidelines, and articles of incorporation. The collection contains some non-print media, including slides, films, and video and audio tapes. These are largely of an educational nature and subjects include local labor and ethnic history, histories of Milwaukee neighborhoods and continuing education for librarians.

Abstract: The Library League of La Crosse was founded in 1990 to help raise funds though a Christmas home tour to benefit the La Crosse Public Library. The non-profit organization dissolved in 1998. The collection includes meeting minutes (1990-1998), publicity materials and photographs of the various home tours of La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Abstract: A selection of short documentary and educational films from Libya, originally part of the Madison Public Library's collection. Most of the films are in Arabic; some films are in English or include English subtitles. These short documentary films depict the cultural traditions and industrial progress of Libya, often with a propagandist tone. Some were created by the Libyan government to train citizens on farming practices. Though many of the films are undated, they are thought to have been made during the 1970s.

Abstract: Papers of Lilian Tracey Welda, a La Crosse, Wisconsin, osteopath and various members of her family. Included are correspondence, financial records and a ledger, certificates, photographs, and a diary. The correspondence concerns family matters and various health care issues such as Lilian Welda's views on abortion and birth control and her observations about conditions in hospitals and clinics, and the nature of her medical training, and the deteriorating mental health and treatment of her brother LLoyd Tracey. Also included are discussion of education and teaching from her aunt Ida Johnson, a teacher in Ashland, Wisconsin, and accounts of a U.S. Navy submarine cruise to the Philippines and China in the early 1920s by Lester Tracey.

Abstract: This collection consists of audio recordings of lectures given by various individuals on topics within the field of limnology. These recordings were produced by the Limnology Department, now referred to as the Center for Limnology, primarily during the 1960s and 1970s. The Center for Limnology (CFL) was established in July 1982 to coordinate, conduct and facilitate research, teaching and outreach on freshwater ecosystems at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Abstract: Records of the Lincoln Neighborhood Redevelopment Corporation, a non-profit community development corporation, mostly dating from the 1990s. The collection documents neighborhood improvements, renovation projects, and assistance provided to area residents and businesses. Included are files concerning the establishment of a business improvement district, community development block grants, community reinvestment act matters, including performance evaluations and activity reports, and financial information. Also included in the collection are files documenting the St. Josaphat Basilica square capital improvement project and the Kosciusko Park Lagoon restoration project, as well as photographs documenting renovation projects and the Lincoln Avenue neighborhood.

Abstract: Papers of Lincoln Neprud, a Wisconsin Sixth District (1952-1969) and Vernon County Court (1937-1952) judge, consisting of judicial case files, legal papers, reports, correspondence, minutes, speeches, campaign files, and information regarding numerous civic activities. Case files include his decisions, correspondence, and legal briefs as both Vernon County and Sixth Circuit Court judge, as well as those of his predecessor, R. S. Cowie. Other judicial records include minutes, correspondence, and briefs of the Wisconsin Board of Circuit Judges, various reports of court activities, and miscellaneous judicial information and publications. Involvement with the Snowflake Ski Club of Anderson Hill at Westby, the Vernon County Baseball League, and the Upper Mississippi Anti-Drawdown Congress are also well documented. Of special note is a file pertaining to the controversial appearance of native son Gerald L.K. Smith as a guest speaker at the Viroqua centennial. The photographs document the interior of the Wisconsin Sixth District Circuit Court during a program for women homemakers sponsored by the University of Wisconsin Agricultural Extension Program in 1963, and images of the interior and exterior of a home. Abstract: This collection includes approximately 1000 handwritten letters to and from Linda M. French, dated 1890 to 1921. Her writing, both from Berlin and New York City, provide insight to city life in the early 20th century. She frequently describes and critiques lectures, recordings, books, and especially musical and theatrical performances of the time. From 1912 on, French shows an interest in the fight for suffrage and communicates her involvement in and opinions on the movement. Many of the responses are from friends and family members, notably her uncle, Calvin Stebbins; aunt, Susan Burleigh; and a variety of members of the Beebe family who resided in Hampden, Massachusetts. These letters provide details of family news and share instances of everyday life.

Abstract: Papers, 1924-1954, of Lindsay Hoben, editor of the Milwaukee Journal from 1961-1967. Hoben joined the Journal as a reporter in 1926 and began his travels through Europe, Mexico, and around the world writing columns for the paper. In addition to his worldly travel writings, Hoben was at Bellot Strait, in the eastern Canadian arctic, in 1937 to witness the first crossing of ships through the Northwest Passage. The collection primarily contains scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and photographs documenting his early reporting and travels around the world. Also present are several early typewritten manuscripts by Hoben documenting his early writing career.

Abstract: Research papers, 1851-2001, of Fay Campbell Kaynor for her book, Lapdogs and Bloomer Girls: The Life and Times of Lisle Lester. Lisle Lester was born Sophia Walker in Massachusetts but came to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin as a young girl and attended Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. Lester was a progressive journalist and editor, author, and champion of women’s rights. Kaynor’s research includes annotated photocopies of publications edited by Lester, columns written by Lester, and articles and reviews about Lester and her publications. Also included are reviews of Lester’s dramatic tours around the country, biographical materials detailing her travels, education, and death, and a copy of Kaynor’s book.

Abstract: Papers of Liston Oak, a journalist and liberal political activist who, in the 1920's, became active in the Communist Party, but repudiated communism in the late 1930's. Oak edited or wrote for many publications including Soviet Russia Today (1932-1934), and Fight (1935-1936). After rejecting communism he edited the magazines Antiques (1938-1943) and The New Leader (1943-1948), and served as labor and economics editor of the Voice of America (1948-1965). The bulk of the papers date from the late 1940's to the early 1960's and largely document Oak's work at The New Leader and the Voice of America. Included is correspondence, much of which reveals Oak's opinions and political philosophy; speeches and articles by Oak; research materials on leftist and labor movements; Voice of America materials, including scripts for Oak's radio broadcasts; and personal information. Among the prominent correspondents are Socialist leader Norman Thomas, labor leader George Meany, ex-communist and informer Whittaker Chambers, Polish leader Stanislaw Mikolajczyk, and leftist writer Max Eastman. Also included are minutes of a 1937 meeting of the Theater Union, a leftist theater group which Oak managed briefly.

Abstract: Collection contains the editorial files of the Little Review, an international magazine of the arts. Almost all of the records date from 1914 to 1929. The bulk of the collection consists of corrected and uncorrected galleys of works, correspondence, holograph manuscripts, and typescripts. Also contains the administrative files of editors Margaret Anderson and Jane Heap, which include correspondence concerning subscriptions and advertising; letters from Ezra Pound; and letters from John Quinn, a financial backer of the magazine and the publication's lawyer in the case concerning the government's seizure of the issue containing James Joyce's Ulysses. The collection contains a small amount of layout materials for various issues; photographs and reproductions, usually published in the magazine; and newsclippings (1920-1964) about Anderson, Heap, and the Little Review.

Many of the included documents were contributed by Thomas Frost, Carl Watras, and John Magnuson.

Abstract: Papers of Lizzie Black Kander, whose social work among Russian Jewish immigrants in Milwaukee earned her the sobriquet “the Jane Addams of Milwaukee.” Relating to her founding and operation of the settlement house that ultimately became the Jewish Community Center of Milwaukee are reports, correspondence, promotional brochures, clippings, materials used in publishing a cookbook used for fund-raising purposes, and minutes. Also present is correspondence of her niece, Irma Greenthal, dealing mainly with the 1948 dedication of the Kander Auditorium and with biographical information on her aunt. Photographs include portraits of Kander, images of her family, group meetings, and the exterior of the Jewish Community Center of Milwaukee.
