Abstract: Papers of an author, screenwriter, and member of the Hollywood Ten who was imprisoned in 1950 after refusing to answer questions before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. The collection includes correspondence, writings, and other files. Present are manuscripts for two major novels, Haunch, Paunch, and Jowl (1923) and Bride of the Sabbath (1951), scripts for several stage plays and only a few screenplays and outlines. Annotated research files, clippings, and notes on Judaism and psychiatry illuminate the socio-political themes which were prominent in Ornitz's work. Also of interest are files which demonstrate his method of character development. Other files relate to Theodore Dreiser's investigation of the labor conditions in Harlan County, Kentucky, in 1931, and to the Hollywood Ten trial. The correspondence contains numerous exchanges with publishers such as Rinehart & Co., some references to Ornitz's experience as a screenwriter during the 1930's, and personal correspondence from the period of his imprisonment. Correspondents of note include Brooks Atkinson, Herbert Biberman, Vera Caspary, Harry Golden, Matthew Josephson, Ring Lardner, Jr., John Howard Lawson, Albert Maltz, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Lewis Mumford, and Art Young.
Orr, Glen H. Title: Glen H. Orr Diaries, 1921-1969

Abstract: Diaries, 1921-1969, of Glen H. Orr, a 1915 graduate of the University of Wisconsin's School of Agriculture, who lived in Blooming Grove, near rural south Madison. Orr kept detailed accounts of his farm activities, his home life, the weather, local weddings, births and deaths, buildings, and other daily activities and news. In addition to Orr's farm activities, he worked various odd jobs around Madison, including census enumerating in Stoughton, outdoor landscaping in and around Madison with Wallace Conlin, and a job at the license bureau (Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Department) in downtown Madison. In 1959, he retired and lived in Jasper and Harrison, Arkansas, and after this time the diaries concern his life there.
Orton, John Jay, 1817-1895 Title: John Jay Orton Papers, 1837-1884

Abstract: Papers of Orton, a Milwaukee lawyer and financier originally from New York. While working for a New York State bank, Orton organized financial and land deals with Milwaukee lawyer Allison Lewis and others, including James Kneeland of Wauwatosa, Wis., Orton's business relationships are well documented in the collection. Also included is extensive correspondence concerning the lawsuit between Orton and Josiah A. Noonan resulting from financial recriminations after the burning of the Humboldt and Menomonee Paper Mills; information on circumstances leading to disbarment proceedings against Orton; and letters from Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Edward G. Ryan which provide intimate details concerning the other justices. Correspondence with Isaac Sherman of Buffalo and New York City on the management of a lumber company; legal papers from a number of cases handled by Orton; and two account books are also included. Other correpondents include Judge Harlow S. Orton of Madison; David B. Frankenberger, Orton's partner at law and later professor at the University of Wisconsin, and Senator Angus Cameron and other Republicans.
