Abstract: Papers of Mary Virginia McCormick, eldest daughter of Chicago industrialist Cyrus Hall McCormick and Nettie Fowler McCormick, who became mentally incompetent at the age of nineteen. The papers consist of correspondence; early diaries and school notebooks; reports from doctors, nurses, and companions; legal documents; and financial records. These concern relations with members of her family, arrangements for her personal welfare and medical treatment, upkeep of her several homes and estates in the United States and Canada, and plans for travel to her homes and to Europe. Correspondence describes Virginia's daily activities and state of mind and contains detailed advice concerning her care. Medical letters, reports, and casebooks deal with her mental condition. Legal papers relate to sanity hearings and trusteeships. Financial records concern investments; management of her estate; household, personal, and medical bills; and expense accounts. Her papers, ending in the year of her mother's death in 1923, lack any information relating to the last three decades of her life, when she lived chiefly in California as a millionaire recluse with a staff of some thirty persons. Virginia's mother, her brother Cyrus H., Jr., and her uncle Eldridge M. Fowler, served as original conservators and trustees for her share of the estate inherited from her father; her younger brother and sister, Harold and Anita, were successor trustees; and Judson F. Stone, representing McCormick Estates, managed her financial affairs. In addition to the correspondence of each of these individuals and many who cared for her, the papers include medical case histories and diaries of doctors such as Alice Bennett and Sanger Brown; and letters and reports from Grace T. Walker, head of Mary Virginia's household for forty years.

Entries refer to discussions on plant expansion, her attitude toward mine investments, and her writing of business letters at McCormick's dictation. References are made to the Civil War, especially during its opening months while the family lived in Washington, and her later work with the New York Ladies' Southern Relief Society. Merick, making frequent reference to Nettie. Of the scrapbooks, one records the success of the McCormick reaper at the London exhibition in 1862; one contains clippings of letters by McCormick published in church papers, 1868-1869, concerning a dispute with Willis Lord involving the McCormick Theological Seminary; and two consist of clippings, programs, and photographs, 1909-1912, regarding admission of Cyrus H. Quantity: 9.4 c.f. (47 archives boxes)
Call Number: Wis Mss OF
Abstract: Papers of Francis E. McGovern, a progressive Republican governor of Wisconsin, 1911-1915, whose administration was notable for its social and administrative reforms. Correspondence relates to his election and service as governor, state politics, the state and national progressive movement, the University of Wisconsin, civil service, and elections. Other papers include applications and endorsements for state jobs, nomination papers for McGovern's second term, and personal financial records. Letters from the spring of 1912 primarily concern the Republican National Convention and the contest between Robert La Follette, William H. Taft, and Theodore Roosevelt for the presidential nomination. Correspondents include John J. Blaine, La Follette's campaign manager; William J. Barnes, New York Republican favoring Taft; and New York backers of Roosevelt. McGovern's strategy as head of the Wisconsin delegation in the convention caused a rift between him and La Follette, and the subsequent correspondence is largely a record of the rivalry which followed until 1914, when McGovern was defeated for U.S. senator. During his second term, the governor had personnel difficulties with La Follette men who were secure in their positions by virtue of the state civil service law. Many papers deal with this problem and with McGovern's efforts to depose some of them, notably insurance commissioner Herman L. Ekern. Letters between McGovern and president Charles R. Van Hise of the University of Wisconsin and Charles McCarthy of the Legislative Reference Library discuss the need for changes in the University to meet problems arising from the rapid industrialization of the country. The 1935 items are two letters by McGovern concerning the Barnes-Bashford election of 1908 and other past political developments.

Philip Randolph, Victor Reuther, and others in the National Education Committee for a New Party from 1946 to 1947 in a failed attempt to create a new progressive political party, and in labor-cooperative cooperation. The collection also contains broad documentation of the larger cooperative movement during the 1930s and 1940s, with the coverage of education and public relations being especially strong. McLanahan's interest in the international scope of the cooperative movement is indicated through his correspondence arranging to bring Latin American exchange students to the United States for cooperative education, correspondence with Latin American and Canadian cooperative leaders, and by his activities as the cooperative movement's representative in the Youth Organization Representation Committee of the United States National Commission for UNESCO. In addition the collection includes brochures and promotional literature gathered during a 1937 tour of European cooperatives as well as a small number of photographs taken during that tour.
