Abstract: The papers and photograph of Victor A. Ames, who worked with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (N.A.T.O.) to locate and remove mines in Bosnia and Herzegovina following the Dayton Accords (1995) that ended open warfare in the area. Included are maps of Bosnia and the surrounding areas, many of which show mine fields. Posters meant to raise awareness about mines, one of which features Superman, are in the collection along with mine recognition cards that describe the different types of mines present in Bosnia. Materials from two United Nations organizations, including the Mine Action Center, show the work being done to eliminate the threat of mines, especially the location, identification, and destruction of existing mines. Three modern methods of mine removal are highlighted in some promotional materials from private companies. Newspaper articles contain information about Ames and his service, about mine removal in Bosnia, and about Bosnia in general. A color photocopy of an informational packet given to Diana, Princess of Wales shows her signature. Photographs include many shots of mines, mine explosion sites, and mine damaged vehicles. There are also three photographs of members of the multi-national Division Salamandre practicing mine identification techniques. Also included is a short promotional video advertising a mine removal device.

Included is correspondence, Congressional files and mailings, scrapbooks, speeches and writings, Social Democratic Party and Social-Democratic Publishing Company records, papers of their daughters, and other papers.

Abstract: This collection consists of all twenty-six episodes from the half-hour documentary television series Victory at Sea, originally broadcast on NBC in 1952 and 1953. Produced by Henry Salomon with narration by Leonard Graves and music by Richard Rodgers, the series used archival footage to present the history of naval warfare during World War II. The series won an Emmy award in 1954 for best public affairs program and in the same year was condensed into a feature film under the same title. All episodes are 16 mm, black and white prints with sound. They are arranged chronologically by original air date.

Abstract: Records of the Vietnam Moratorium Committee, a national group of liberal students, faculty, members of Congress, and other concerned citizens that organized local debates, vigils, and other nonviolent activities protesting U.S. involvement in Vietnam. Concerning the October 15, 1969, Moratorium and later events the group supported are correspondence (largely incoming), publications, clippings, forms, and lists. There are also clippings, flyers, and forms received from various regional offices. Visual materials include photographs of group members and posters advocating social action.

Abstract: Records, mainly 1967-1975, of Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW), a national organization formed in 1967 by Vietnam veterans who favored military withdrawal from Vietnam. After the war, VVAW worked for improved services and benefits for Vietnam veterans. Included are records of the national office, which was located in New York City and then Chicago, documenting national programs and activities, especially participation in anti-war demonstrations and the Winter Soldier war crimes investigation, as well as support for the rights of active-duty G.I.s around the world and political prisoners such as the Gainesville Eight, Gary Lawton, Ashby Leach, and the Leavenworth Brothers. Of special note is correspondence with various incarcerated prisoners. In addition to records from the national office there are records created by three local chapters: Brooklyn-Northern New Jersey (later Clarence Fitch), Madison, and Milwaukee, all focusing on the post-Vietnam War period and primarily documenting Agent Orange work and involvement in the peace movement during the 1980s and 1990s.

Abstract: Correspondence of a family prominently connected with business and social affairs in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, together with some papers of their relatives in the Morse and Platt families also of that city. The majority of the correspondence consists of discussions of family matters, health, travel, and events received or sent by Cornelia Vilas Morse (1829-1916), her brothers and sisters, and her daughter Helen Vilas Morse (1871-?) and other children. Also included are letters concerning the military service of her husband, Cornelius W. Morse, in a Vermont regiment during the Civil War and correspondence from George W. Vilas concerning his experiences in France during World War I.

Abstract: Published and manuscript music kept by members of the Dousman Family at Villa Louis, their home in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; including some compositions by Virginia Dousman Bigelow. Present is sheet music, anthologies, method books, manuscript compositions and notes, and miscellany. The copyright dates span 1825-1944 and most seem to have been printed about the time of copyright. The sheet music predominantly was published in the United States though some comes from Germany and France. The bulk of the sheet music dates 1890-1905 and includes numerous examples of what was designated “coon music” which now would be considered derogatory caricatures of Blacks.

Abstract: Nash Motors was an automobile manufacturer based in Kenosha from 1916 to 1938. From 1938 to 1954, Nash was the automotive division of the Nash-Kelvinator Corporation. Nash production continued from 1954 to 1957 after the creation of American Motors Corporation. This collection contains records from Nash Motors and the American Motors Corporation.

Abstract: Business and family papers of Vincent Roberts, a nineteenth-century farmer in Dodge County, Wisconsin, justice of the peace, and real estate and loan agent. The collection consists of correspondence, financial records, a notebook of poetry and justice of the peace records, and biographical and miscellaneous materials. Most of the correspondence relates to Roberts' business as a loan agent, and provides insights into the common methods of purchase and transferral of property and wealth in nineteenth-century Wisconsin agricultural areas. Also touched upon are the governmental duties conferred upon those willing to accept them at the time of the organization of the state of Wisconsin.

Abstract: Papers of an American journalist whose works included newspaper articles, magazine stories, and volumes of both fiction and non-fiction, and who traveled extensively throughout the world from the 1920s until his death in 1975. In the course of his travels Sheean met or became acquainted with a number of important 20th-century figures, including Dorothy Thompson, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Mahatma Gandhi, King Faisal ibn al-Saud of Saudi Arabia, and Adlai Stevenson, the last of whom was one of Sheean's closest friends in American political circles. Sheean's papers deal mostly with the period of his life from the immediate post-World War II years to his death and include personal correspondence with his wife Diana, 1943-1971; correspondence with his publishers; a separate file of correspondence of Diana Sheean, much of which was with playwright Thornton Wilder; eight personal journals kept by Sheean, 1944-1958; manuscripts of a number of Sheean's works, both published and unpublished; subject files documenting Sheean's interests, such as opera, and contacts, which include Indira Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Adlai Stevenson; assorted financial records from 1933-1976; and an assortment of Sheean's passports and notebooks.

Abstract: Papers of Virgil D. Roberts, a democratic Wisconsin Assemblyman from La Crosse. Roberts was first elected to the assembly in 1970, and served until 1984. While a representative, Roberts served on committees for Tax Reform, State Railroad Advisory, and Natural Resources as well as Primary and Secondary Education and others. The papers document Robert’s communication with his constituency and consist predominantly of legislative correspondence, press releases, and speeches, as well as a few photographs and news clippings featuring Roberts.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1949-1979, of an Illinois socialist and historian about his involvement in various organizations in the left wing of the Socialist movement in the United States. Included are convention records, policy papers, minutes, correspondence, and other papers on the Libertarian Socialist League and the Socialist Party USA (SP USA), which Vogel helped to found (1949 and 1973, respectively) and the Debs Caucus and Illinois chapter of the Socialist Party-Social Democratic Federation (SP-SDF), as well as miscellaneous papers on other organizations and committees such as the Citizens Party of Illinois, the Proletarian Party, the Independent Socialist League, and the Young Communist League. In addition, there is extensive correspondence with socialists around the country deriving from his work, 1973-1974, as editor of the SP USA discussion bulletin, Hammer and Tongs. Prominent correspondents in the collection include party officials and members Abraham Bassford, William O. Hart, David McReynolds, Bill Munger, Burton Rosen, Carl Shier, Harry Siitonen, Tad Tekla, Lee Webster, and Frank Zeidler.

Abstract: Virginia Georgieff, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin native, served as a member of Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVE) in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946. This collection spans the years 1942–1951 and contains materials acquired during her time in various Navy training and service with the WAVE in New York, Washington, Iowa and Idaho.

Abstract: Papers of a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee English professor which include professional and personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, drafts of published works, copies of works submitted for publication, reviews, and notes. The professional correspondence includes thank you letters, letters of inquiry, rejection and acceptance letters from publishers, and routine correspondence with colleagues. The personal correspondence deals primarily with Burke's battle against heart disease. A large portion of the collection concerns Burke's involvement with professional organizations, particularly the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English (WCTE). The collection also reflects her interest in Black literature. She taught courses in Black literature, and she served on the advisory board for the Negro-American Literature Forum, which later became the Black American Literature Forum.

Abstract: Records of the Visiting Nurse Service in Madison, Wisconsin, an organization which provides in-home nursing care for sick and chronically ill patients at the request of doctors, hospitals, families, or social agencies. VNS was a part of the Attic Angels, a private charitable organization, from its founding in 1908 until separation in 1950. The records document activities of both the Service and the Attic Angels in minutes, reports of the Nursing Committee, and correspondence.

Abstract: Founded in 1985 as AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin, Vivent Health is a national model for providing comprehensive, integrated health and social services to HIV patients. The collection documents the development of Vivent Health from a small provider of limited social services to the largest provider of HIV-health care services in Wisconsin and the most comprehensive AIDS service organization in the United States. It includes administrative records relating to governmental advocacy, annual reports, financial statements, strategic plans, board meeting minutes, and originating documents. It also contains photographs, posters, and audiovisual material related to the fight against HIV/AIDS in Wisconsin.
