Abstract: A reference collection of Veda Stone, a social worker long active in American Indian affairs, education, and family health and children's services in Wisconsin, documenting Stone's work with government agencies, organizations, and conferences concerning Indians. Also present are records, including individual student files, dealing with Indian education in Wisconsin and other states. Microfilmed newsletters, periodicals, and near-print documents published in the U.S. and Canada by or about Indian groups and organizations are also present, together with a major reference file with emphasis on Menominee and Chippewa (Ojibwe) Indians in Wisconsin and tribal groups in Minnesota. The tapes record speeches and panel discussions from a 1966 Indian leadership conference.

Abstract: Papers, 1898-2003, documenting the lives and activities of Velma Hamilton and Harry Hamilton of Madison, Wisconsin. Velma Hamilton was actively involved in many civic organizations, including the Governor’s Commission on Human Rights, and various religious organizations. Harry Hamilton was a founding member of the Madison Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and both served terms as president of the organization. The Hamiltons were members of a coalition that promoted the Fair Housing ordinance in Madison and were activists for the rights and welfare of social citizens at both the local and state level. The papers detail the Hamiltons' role in these organizations and include personal correspondence, news clippings, awards, speeches, reports, papers regarding the Bell family, and photographs of the Hamiltons.

Abstract: Papers of Vera Caspary, a novelist, playwright, and writer of motion picture screenplays. Much of the collection consists of progressive drafts of her novels A Chosen Sparrow (1964), The Man Who Loved His Wife (1966), and The Rosecrest Cell (1968). Motion picture files include scripts and revisions, story ideas sold to studios, clippings, printed matter, and photographs for such films as Laura (20th Century-Fox, 1944), Les Girls (MGM, 1957), and Letter to Three Wives (20th Century-Fox, 1948). Writing for other media is less well represented, but there are two television pilots; several short stories; and drafts of Geraniums in My Window (1934), a play written with Samuel B. Ornitz; The Husband (1957); and Wedding in Paris (1954). Two boxes of correspondence contain exchanges with studio executives and literary agents and include some contracts.

Abstract: Papers and photographs of Vera Fannie Croner detailing her life as a Jew living in Germany until her move in 1945 to Norway and then eventually to the United States. The papers include correspondence; materials pertaining to her grandfather, Bondy Croner; biographical documents and publications about Vera, as well as numerous pieces of memorabilia. Also included are numerous materials on Vera's parents, Max and Hedwig Croner. Included also are many photographs depicting Max and Hedwig, and many photographs of Vera through the years.

Abstract: Papers of educator Dr. Verna Carley, including personal and official correspondence, various reports, and numerous photographs from her work around the world. Papers include documentation of her time as WAVE training commander in Pensacola, Florida during World War II and her subsequent work as a Teacher Education Adviser and director of the Institute for Educational Leadership as part of the U.S. occupation of Japan. Other materials record her work as an educator for the U.S. State Department, such as her 1955-1958 stay in Taiwan as Community School Adviser and in the following years as a Teacher Education Specialist aiding developing nations in establishing effective educational systems in various parts of Southeast Asia and Africa until 1964. Also included is a biographical folder with timelines of Dr. Carley's work and photographs documenting her work and travels.

Abstract: Papers, 1908-1950 (primarily 1927-1949), of Verne P. Kaub, a Wisconsin newspaperman, publicist, and religious activist. In the 1930s Kaub’s concern focused on the influence of communism and socialism on American religion, government, and free enterprise. Much of the material in the collection documents his efforts to combat what he saw as the growing strength of communism within the Congregational Church, especially the Church’s Council for Social Action, and in American Protestant churches in general. In 1949 these concerns, among others, led to his founding of the American Council of Christian Laymen.

Abstract: Documents recording conveyance of real estate. Primarily deeds, 1851-1928, with some tax deeds through 1954. Entries show number and type of deed, date, names of grantor and grantee, description of property, names of witnesses, amount paid, date recorded, and notarial acknowledgment. This microfilm was produced by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1987, which holds the master negatives. Originals are in the Vernon County Register of Deeds Office, Viroqua, Wisconsin.

Entries show instrument number and name, names of grantor and grantee, description of land, volume and page where recorded, to whom delivered, and amount of fee received. This microfilm was produced by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1987, which holds the master negatives. Originals are in the Vernon County Register of Deeds Office, Viroqua, Wisconsin. (Vernon County was formed under the name of Bad Ax County in 1851 and existed under that name until 1862.)

Abstract: Papers of Vernon F. Haubrich, a professor of educational policy studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, entirely concerning a national research project (1967-1971) on the educational, sociological, and economic factors that contributed to successful elementary school desegregation. Included are achievement test forms completed by individual students; attitudinal questionnaires completed by teachers, counselors, and principals; and recorded interviews (some in transcribed form). Also included are taped interviews of students and other materials concerning the development of the Wisconsin Cartoon Test which was used to study the racial attitudes of young children. Fragmentary administrative papers include the original grant proposal, the final report, and miscellaneous correspondence.

Abstract: Papers of Vernon Tichenor, the first lawyer in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, as well as the County's Draft Commissioner. The collection contains letters to his wife Charlotte, Civil War records, and other personal and professional papers. The Civil War records include bounty and pension records from veterans or their families, most from Wisconsin Units, but also other state units as well as a couple serving in the 67th United States Colored Infantry. Bounty and pension records also exist from the War of 1812 and one from the Second Seminole War. The letters to Tichenor's wife describe the journey to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, via the Great Lakes with descriptions of people he encountered, including Native Americans. Also includes a lecture on reform (1842), a Free Democratic Party Convention speech (1852), and a reminiscence about the 1864 capture of Mobile, Alabama, written by his son, Captain Willis V. Tichenor (1893).

Abstract: Papers of Vernon Thomson, a former Republican state legislator (1935-1950), attorney general (1951-1956), governor (1957-1958), and member of Congress (1961-1974), primarily documenting his career as governor of Wisconsin and United States representative. Included are correspondence, memoranda, notes, background material, speeches, tapes, films, and files on press and publicity, legislation, and constituent cases. The papers are arranged into two public record series of gubernatorial papers and one manuscript collection that includes Thomson's congressional papers and his speeches. For the period of Thomson's tenure as governor, there are significant files on the economic development of the state, highway safety, conservation and the environment, the state budget and the prospect of a sales tax, and the St. Lawrence Seaway and Wisconsin's participation in the Great Lakes Compact Commission. There is also some material on Thomson's support of Robert Taft in 1952. Documenting his career as a member of Congress is constituent correspondence, case and project files, and material on legislation which Thomson sponsored or introduced such as bills concerning tariffs on shoes, dairy and agricultural products, and lead and zinc, and benefits for Mexican border veterans. One file contains correspondence concerning Thomson's anti-gambling legislation introduced in 1945.

Abstract: The vertical file collection consists of miscellaneous publications, brochures, news clippings, and items of an ephemeral nature. The collection contains local community histories and historical information about the UWM Libraries' Archives' five-county region (Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Sheboygan, Washington, and Waukesha Counties), including information about individuals and organizations, as well as some materials of a broader statewide nature; information about UWM and UWM predecessor institutions, buildings, and associated individuals; and research aids, such as how to conduct house history research, and other information and resources.

Abstract: Collection of still images pertaining to Wisconsin veterans, mainly members of various veteran organizations, from the Civil War through World War II. The vast majority of images are from the Civil War and include images of GAR members and Women's Relief Corps members. Portrait types include chalk, charcoal, pen-and-ink drawings, etchings and photographs. Most of the images are artistic portraits of Civil War veterans, with a few featuring family members and groups of veterans. There are photographs of members of the Grand Army of the Republic, the Lucius Fairchild Post (Madison, WI), and its auxiliary Women's Relief Corps Post. Images of note include two portraits of Lucius Fairchild, who served in the 1st and 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiments during the Civil War and served three times as governor of Wisconsin; and a portrait of Arthur McArthur, who served as adjutant in the 24th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Civil War, and served in the Spanish-American War, eventually being promoted to brigadier general. Images from the Spanish-American war feature a group of officers, individual portraits of two of those officers, and a few images of soldiers from Wisconsin. World War I and World War II are only represented in a few images of soldiers and group photograph of soldiers at a camp in Georgia.

Abstract: Records of Veterans for Peace (VFP), an activist group devoted to curtailing U.S. military intervention in other countries. The collection includes correspondence, memoranda, case files, project files, news clippings and photographs of meetings and activities. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence with various VFP chapters and their membership as well as information on a delegation of VFP members who traveled to Nicaragua in 1990 to observe the presidential elections there.

Abstract: The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Thomas Rooney Post 1530 (La Crosse, Wisconsin) Scrapbooks are comprised of two scrapbooks. The first contains clippings about the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) State Encampment in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin during June of 1952. The second is comprised of newspaper clippings and other assorted items pertaining to the activities of the Thomas Rooney Post and the Ladies' Auxiliary of the VFW.

Abstract: This collection consists of the records of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Brown Deer Memorial Post 8099. Included are business and activity records, photographs, news clippings, correspondence, and memorabilia documenting the members' commitment to serve within their community. The post's activities included bell-ringing for the Salvation Army, sponsoring scholarships at Brown Deer Middle and High Schools, volunteering at the local veterans medical center, selling VFW Poppies, and marching in Brown Deer's 4th of July Parade. Over the years, they also donated MIA/POW and American flags to the community. The "White Hat Papers" included in the collection were sent into the "All-State Post Commanders" competition, which is the highest recognition that a post commander can receive. The post closed in 1998 due to membership decline and member inactivity. Most of the information in this collection is from 1987 to 1998.

Abstract: Records of the Walworth County, Wisconsin organization composed entirely of World War I veterans and dedicated to advancing the causes of those who fought in the First World War through increased benefits and recognition. Includes fairly complete records from the organization's inception in 1963 through its dissolution in 1991. Meeting minutes provide insight into their activities, with early minutes showing active membership recruitment and efforts to secure pro-veteran legislation while minutes from the later years show a dramatic drop in membership due to deaths and difficulty holding meetings due to the age of members. Also in this collection are bank statements, cancelled checks, and reports that show large amounts of money being acquired through membership dues in the 1960s and '70s, with that amount declining significantly in the '80s. Correspondence deals largely with the term of Barracks #3241 member Claire Congdon as Commander of the Department of Wisconsin from 1985 to 1986. Also from Congdon's term as Department Commander are meeting minutes and other materials relating to the Veterans of World War I's participation in several state veterans institutions such as the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs, State Council of Commanders, and Veterans Council. Also included are meeting minutes, financial records, and membership lists from the women's auxiliary. The materials show a similar decline in membership and resources as the members aged, as well as similar concerns for supporting and recognizing aging and deceased members. A sympathy card log documents their concern for the families of deceased members. A photograph shows five members of the barracks at the final meeting, after voting to disband the organization in 1991.

Abstract: Records and photographs of a voluntary fraternal association of World War I veterans and their auxiliary dedicated to ensuring proper recognition and benefits for their sacrifices. The records are very scattered, but include correspondence relating to the chartering of individual barracks in Wisconsin, departmental convention materials, and papers relating to the political activities of the group to ensure proper pensions and other benefits. Records from the auxiliary are similarly scattered, but include some financial records, a group history, several ephemeral scrapbooks, and a number of administrative reports. Photographs contain shots from several departmental conventions in the 1960's and the chartering of several local barracks.

Abstract: Mainly scrapbooks of a La Crosse, Wisconsin, chapter of the national U.S. group the Veterans of World War I Auxiliary, arranged chronologically from 1959-1985. These contain some meeting minutes, membership rosters, newspaper articles, and photographs. There are a few other materials not included in the scrapbooks, such as notes of meeting minutes from 1984; correspondence from the Department of Wisconsin secretary regarding state conventions from 1984; membership lists from 1971; three issues of the Veterans of World War I : What's Going On in Wisconsin newspaper from 1984-1986; and extensive photographs and biographical material about Arthur G. Mossong. Mossong (1897-1981) was a lifelong resident of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and he served in the U.S. Navy during World War I. He helped organize Veterans of World War I and Department of Wisconsin, and the Fond du Lac County Barracks 1354. The Veterans of World War I Auxiliary La Crosse Barracks 1650 disbanded in 1989.

Abstract: Correspondence, flyers, handbills, and clippings of the New York City chapter of a national organization of veterans from four wars that opposed U.S. involvement in the war in Southeast Asia. Mass mailings, many of which were issued by steering committee coordinator Ronald G. Wolin, concern participation in numerous marches and demonstrations and make up the bulk of the collection. A limited quantity of correspondence includes exchanges with veterans' peace organizations around the country and letters from Floyd B. McKissick, David M. Shoup, Arnold C. True, and Dalton Trumbo.
