Wojta, circa 1930 Quantity: 0.4 cubic feet of transparencies (2 negative boxes) and 0.1 cubic feet of paper (1 folder) Call Number: PH 1236; PH 1237; SC 3190 Abstract: Lantern slides assembled by J.F. Wojta, for courses on improved farming practices for various tribes in Wisconsin. The courses were entitled “Early Indian Life in Wisconsin” and “Indians in Wisconsin in Food Production.” Wojta, who photographed some of the images, also borrowed others, including some from the WHS collections. Images feature individuals wearing handmade beaded regalia, hunting, dressing hides, drying corn, and picking cranberries. Individuals identified include Earnest Oshkosh, Mrs. Antonne Buffalo Sr., and Chas. Decorah. Also includes images of a pipestone quarry, implements, baskets, farmland and livestock, maple sugar harvest, wigwams, the Odanah Fair in Keshena, Wisconsin, and a lacrosse team. The “Early Indian Life in Wisconsin” course is accompanied by lecture notes and descriptions of the slides. Tribes represented include members of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community, Potawatomi, Ojibwe, Menominee and Ho-Chunk.

(116 archives boxes, 13 card file boxes, and 9 flat boxes), 124 photographs, and 43 negatives Call Number: Northland Mss L; PH Northland Mss L Abstract: Administrative, program, and curricular records of Trees for Tomorrow, Inc. of Eagle River, Wis., a non-profit conservation and environmental education organization, acknowledged as the oldest conservation education center in the Midwest. Established through member subscriptions from seventeen Wisconsin paper and utility industries, Trees for Tomorrow worked in cooperation with state and county agencies in reforesting the cutover region of northern Wisconsin. The focus of the organization has changed over time but major components have included tree planting and distribution, forest management services, and conservation education. The collection contains annual, staff monthly, and program reports; program statistical data; committee and governing body minutes and supporting materials; financial records; general correspondence and subject files; correspondence with member paper mills and utility companies; and public relations materials. Also included are administrative records concerning forest management services and camp educational workshops, forest management plans and maps developed for private landowners, curricular and program records relating to the educational workshops and classes offered at the Trees camp, and personal papers of executive director, M. N. “Mully” Taylor. A small photograph series contains views of workshops and tours, camp facilities, forest management activities, early tree planting machines, and miscellaneous images.

The congregation is still active and is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Records include baptisms, 1876-1939; confirmations, 1876-1888, 1892-1939; marriages, 1878-1918, 1925-1938; burials, 1877-1939; daily registers, 1876-1939; lists of members of the congregation, 1876-1888, 1902-1925; and communion records, 1889-1916. Also microfilmed with the Trinity Lutheran documents are records of the inactive Bostwick Valley [Norwegian Lutheran ?] Church which may have been affiliated with one of the predecessor groups that merged to become Trinity Lutheran Church. Bostwick Valley is located in the Town of Barre, La Crosse County. These records include baptisms, 1855-1917; confirmations, 1862-1871, 1877-1894; communion records, 1859-1909; marriages, 1864-1909; burials, 1862-1936; lists of members of the congregation, 1856-1887, 1861-1877; and daily registers, 1861-1870, 1877-1912. All records were written in the Norwegian language.

The records include minutes of the Church, Consistory, Women’s Guild, and Brotherhood, financial records, member records, annual reports, newsletters, a photo album of church members (1941-1971), and photographs of the church building. Also included is a map of the original cemetery.

(79 archives boxes, 138 record center cartons, and 35 volumes) Call Number: Green Bay Mss 89 Abstract: Records of Trowbridge, Planert & Schaefer, a Green Bay, Wisconsin, firm which practiced civil law on behalf of individuals, small businesses, and a few large corporate clients. Consisting of correspondence, 1876-1905, financial records, 1891-1951, attorneys' personal papers, and extensive case files, the records largely document operation of the legal system outside formal court proceedings. Among the most informative materials are those discussing debtors' financial conditions and various strategies in debt collection cases and those concerning negotiation of settlements between insurance firms and automobile accident victims. The records illuminate several other areas as well: the nature and operation of the financial credit structure, the impact of the automobile on the practice of law, the professionalization of the practice of law at the end of the 19th century, the role of a general law firm operating in a regional urban center, and the business and financial operations of a law firm. Finally, the records contain some information on the non-business, public interests and activities of a group of successful professional men. Firm members whose personal papers are included in the collection are George Bills, H.O. Fairchild, George G. Greene, James McGillan, Barton L. Parker, F.N. Trowbridge, and Rodney C. Welch. The firm's corporate clients included Holt Lumber Company, Menominee Bay Shore Lumber Company, Green Bay and Western Railway Company, Chicago and Northwestern Railway Company, and the Wisconsin Public Service Corporation.

(1 archives box) Call Number: Whitewater Mss G Abstract: Correspondence, a family genealogy, and family business papers of Saunders, a farmer and merchant in West Hallick, Illinois and Milton, Wisconsin. Included are letters from his fiancee, Phoebe Wilcox, 1836-1850s; to others from Saunders on the subject of land, 1850s; and from his children, Ellen and Truman W. Saunders, written while they were students at Milton Academy, 1864-1866.
Johnson, Trumann J.	Title: Trumann J. Johnson Papers and Photographs, Quantity: 1.0 linear ft. (3 archives boxes) of papers and 0.4 linear ft. (3 folders and 1 flat box) of photographs. Call Number: WVM Mss 680 Abstract: Papers and photographs of Trumann J. Johnson, a private in the Army during World War II who served briefly in France with the 359th Infantry Regiment before being killed in action. The majority of the collection consists of letters Johnson, a Madison, Wisconsin native, exchanged with his sister, Norraine; friends; and other family during his stateside training at Camp Blanding, Florida and his brief overseas service in England and France. Very aware of censors, Johnson did not describe military affairs in his letters, instead focusing upon recreational activities available to soldiers such as U.S.O. shows and dating local girls. Letters to Johnson describe events at home and the social happenings among his family and circle of friends. Also included are scattered letters that Norraine Johnson received from admiring young men in the service, with a large number from sailor Fred Theiler. A small number of military papers and ephemeral items can also be found in the collection. Photographs include a scrapbook Norraine compiled after her brother's death which contains pictures of Trumann with family members and friends. A few loose photographs show Johnson in civilian dress and uniform, as well as Theiler in Navy uniform.
