Abstract: Papers of Noel A. Gillespie, a British anesthetist who became a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin. Included is correspondence by and relating to Dr. Albert Schweitzer, 1922-1952; letters from T. E. Lawrence, 1913-1921; and letters and diaries of Gillespie's mother, Emily Rieder, lecturer on the Middle East and on women's and humanitarian movements. Gillespie worked with Schweitzer in Africa in 1924 and wrote detailed letters to his mother during his months there. Also included are letters, 1970-1972, between editor William C. Haygood and scholars, mainly in Switzerland, concerning Schweitzer-Gillespie letters in the possession of the Wisconsin Historical Society and other institutions; including various publications relating to Schweitzer archives and societies.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1950-1982, of Norbert S. Hill Sr., a leader of the Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin and World War II veteran, documenting his career and personal life. The family papers include articles, correspondence, speeches, and photographs, as well as alumni information for Hill and his mother, Dr. Lillie Rosa Minoka-Hill, one of the first Native American women to earn a physician's license. The professional papers reflect his leadership roles within the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin, the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council, and other organizations relating to his efforts in health, education, housing, and economic development. The papers consist of a tribal history, enrollment procedures, agendas and minutes, agreements, progress reports, tribal corporate records, housing authority materials, programs, Oneida industrial development, election materials, forms, correspondence, memos, and copies of historic lawsuits and legislation.

Included are correspondence, form letters, clippings, flyers, newsletters, and other printed matter relating to the United Federation of Teachers' “Adopt-a-School” program in Prince Edward County, Virginia, in 1963; its volunteer teaching during the Mississippi Freedom Summer project in 1964; and its support of full integration of New York City schools. Her leadership in the opposition to the war in Vietnam is documented in files on the Teachers Committee for Peace in Vietnam and the Fifth Avenue Vietnam Peace Parade Committee.

Abstract: Papers of Norman Jewison, a noteworthy motion picture producer-director, chiefly comprised of materials relating to films made for Universal Studios and the Mirisch Corporation. Pertaining to such films as The Cincinnati Kid (MGM, 1965), Fiddler on the Roof (UA, 1972), Gaily, Gaily (UA, 1969), Jesus Christ, Superstar (Universal, 1973), In the Heat of the Night (UA, 1967), The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming (UA, 1966), and The Thomas Crown Affair (UA, 1968) are correspondence, scripts, photographs, technical production information, contracts, reviews, clippings (some available on microfilm), financial records, and sound track recordings. Jewison's later films are usually well documented and the files trace each title from preproduction planning to distribution and publicity. In addition to the normal production files, the material on Superstar is of interest for its portrayal of Jews' role in the death of Christ. Filed with a group of protest letters from concerned Jewish organizations is one letter from Golda Meir. Also part of the papers are scripts, correspondence, and synopses for unproduced films; scripts and tape recordings for several television programs directed for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and various U.S. networks; general correspondence; and a documentary about Jewison as a filmmaker.

Abstract: Papers of Norman Katkov, a journalist and writer of short stories, novels, screenplays, and teleplays. Included are scripts primarily relating to his television work, non-theatrical writings, and correspondence. Although Katkov has written for many dramatic television series, most of these programs are represented only by scripts for single episodes. Larger files are present, however, for Ben Casey (ABC), 87th Precinct (NBC), The Loner (CBS), Maya (NBC), The Outlaws (NBC), Slattery's People (CBS), The Virginian (NBC), and Wanted: Dead or Alive (CBS). Screenplays consist almost entirely of outlines and proposals for unproduced works, the exceptions to this being multiple script drafts for It Happened to Jane (Col., 1959) and Strangers When We Meet (Col., 1960). Non-theatrical writings include a manuscript and related materials for The Fabulous Fanny (1953), Katkov's biography of Fanny Brice; multiple drafts of the novel Eric Mattson (1964); and short stories and columns for the New York World-Telegram and the North American Newspaper Alliance. There are also biographical materials and informative correspondence made up of both incoming and outgoing letters about personal and business matters.

Abstract: Papers of Norman Clapp, a Wisconsin newspaper editor and publisher, Democratic politician, federal and state government administrator, and energy consultant. Included are correspondence, an oral history, memoranda, financial materials, photographs, publicity, research material and studies, draft legislation, clippings, and printed matter. General personal and career papers include extensive correspondence with Lawrence College friends; political associates such as Thomas R. Amlie, Philip La Follette, and Robert M. La Follette Jr.; and family members including his brother, Gordon Clapp. Additional material relates to the movement in Wisconsin to oust Senator Joseph R. McCarthy. Journalistic papers contain incomplete correspondence and financial records concerning his award-winning editorship and management of the Grant County Independent and the Muscoda Progressive. Several boxes relate to Clapp's three unsuccessful attempts to win the Third Congressional District seat in southwestern Wisconsin. In addition to campaign literature, financial records, lists, analyses, and advertising, there is extensive correspondence with national, state, and local party leaders. Files on his career as administrator of the Rural Electrification Administration include correspondence, memoranda, studies, legislation about supplementary financing for the agency, a complete reading file of outgoing correspondence and memoranda (1961-1969), and exchanges with White House staff. Pertaining to his later career as an energy consultant are project files containing correspondence, memoranda, and draft reports on work done in association with David Lilienthal's Resources and Development Corporation and Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation. Of special interest is the file on the 1977 New York City blackout. Photographs include formal and informal portraits, snapshots of the Clapp family, and views of activities as head of the REA (one with Orville Freeman) and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, as a journalist, and as a congressional candidate. These include images of John F. Kennedy, Patrick J. Lucey, Estes Kefaufer, Henry Meier, and William Proxmire.

Abstract: Records of a commission whose purpose is to develop statements of stratigraphic principles; review problems and recommend procedures applying to classification and nomenclature of stratigraphic and related areas. Most of the collection consists of general files, arranged chronologically, containing correspondence, minutes of meetings, and reports of the NACSN. The general files document annual meetings of the commission; the development and revisions of the stratigraphic code; activities of subcommittees; and the writing of the Commission's published notes and reports. The collection also contains extensive files of the Code Committee (1977-1983) which coordinated a complete revision of the code. The Code Committee files include scattered records of its subcommittees. The records of the Quaternary Advisory Group contain correspondence, minutes of meetings, and reports concerning terminology and stratigraphic principles and applications of Quaternary stratigraphic concepts.

Abstract: Records of an agricultural and food cooperative organized by black Mississippians in response to the mechanization of cotton farming and problems of unemployment and malnutrition in the Mississippi Delta. Among the records are articles of incorporation, by-laws, minutes of meetings, a progress report, plans, budgets, a membership list, and brochure of the Cooperative; minutes of meetings of “teams” concerned with health care; materials describing the programs of the Tufts-Delta Health Center; and data pertaining to the population and incomes in the Delta. Eight tapes record interviews made by Historical Society staff member Charles Bowden with Cooperative leaders and members.

This congregation was originally attached to the First Presbyterian Church on the South Side of La Crosse, and became its own church in 1870, incorporating as North La Crosse Presbyterian Church in 1878.

Abstract: Records of North Western Lumber Company, an Eau Claire, Wisconsin company, organized in 1873, which engaged in lumbering in northwestern Wisconsin until the depletion of timber supplies halted operations in about 1920. Correspondence relates primarily to the management and gradual liquidation of the company's assets after 1920. Most of the letters were written by George W. Hipke of Stanley, an officer of the company. Among these are many which pertain to his campaigns for the state legislature in 1934 and 1936 and to legislative bills and issues. Journals, ledgers, cashbooks, and tax records cover the company's operations after 1894. Annotated plat books and land inventories show property holdings, and two volumes of appraisals give a detailed description of the plant and equipment at Stanley in 1909. The collection also contains scattered records of related or subsidiary firms: the North Western Mercantile Company, 1919-1932; the Stanley, Merrill, and Phillips Railway, 1902-1926, both in Wisconsin; and the Del Norte Company, a lumber company operating in northern California. Oversized maps are of Stanley, Eau Claire, Altoona, Jump River, and other areas of Wisconsin. Also present are office building blueprints.

Abstract: Records of the Northern Chief Iron Company, a Wausau (Wis.) based company which was the owner and lessor of iron ore rich lands on the Gogebic range in northeastern Wisconsin. Included in the collection are administrative records consisting of correspondence, quit claims, deeds, land patents, mine track grants to railroads, and court records from various land disputes. Also included are agreements with various mining companies consisting of leases, monthly mining reports, royalty receipts, and correspondence. The financial records of the company include corporate income tax returns, capital stock tax forms, stockholder information, tax deeds and tax certificates, and leases and sales.

Abstract: The Northern Hotels Corporation Lawsuit Materials include correspondence, hotel registration cards, and bills from the Hotel Stoddard in La Crosse, Wisconsin, dating 1946-1947. These items pertain to a racial discrimination lawsuit filed against Northern Hotels Corporation, which managed the Hotel Stoddard. The lawsuit was decided in favor of the plantiff in 1947, for an award of $25 and costs.

Abstract: Records, 1909-2008 (bulk 1922-1998), of the Northern Wisconsin Cooperative Tobacco Pool, originally based in Madison, Wisconsin, which moved to Viroqua, Wisconsin, in 1940. Records include volumes of tobacco growers in the Cooperative before and after its split with the Southern division in 1938 through 2008, subject and correspondence files, financial audits, membership lists and general financial records. The cooperative's primary correspondents are President George Nygaard, Managers A.J. Peterson and George Nettum. Abstract: The Northwest Side Community Development Corporation (NWSCDC) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing Milwaukee's Northwest side. The bulk of the collection documents the NWSCDC's economic development strategies. The collection contains meeting minutes and correspondence which date to the NWSCDC's founding in 1983. Many of the organization's development programs have their own meeting minutes and correspondence. Also included are photographs, newsletters, grant proposals, reports, and news clippings that document the NWSCDC's achievements. Major accomplishments include the Villard Avenue Revitalization Project, renovating an old fire house into a community center, real estate developments, and business recruitment and retention. Community development projects include the building of an alternative high school, youth services, neighborhood safety, and job creation and placement.

Abstract: Interview conducted by Dale Treleven of the Historical Society staff, in 19756, with Norval Clarence Ellefson, long-time Dunn County, Wisconsin, farmer and chairman of the board of the Farmers Union Central Exchange, Inc. (CENEX). Oral history includes information on changes in farming over the previous six decades, farmers' difficulties during the 1930s depression, on community affairs and his experiences on the Dunn County Board of Supervisors, and on the growth of and directions taken by CENEX. Also includes photocopies of related papers, 1962-1976, including clippings, a statement by Ellefson, and two brief histories of CENEX; and photographs of the Louis Ellefson farm in Dallas, Barron County, Wisconsin, 1900-1920, including exterior views of the farm fields, buildings, horses, a tractor and thresher, and individuals.
