Alvarez Cuauhtémoc, Juan Title: Juan Alvarez Cuauhtémoc Photographic Collection of El Movimiento in Milwaukee's Latino Community, 1968-1971

Abstract: Collection consists of thirty-six photographs documenting the Latino civil rights movement in Milwaukee from the late 1960s through the 1970s. The photos document several aspects of El Movimiento ("The Movement" in English) including rallies, hearings, artworks, the Brown Berets, key individuals (including Cesar Chavez and Father Groppi), and public demonstrations in both Milwaukee and Madison. The photos were intended for use in the political community newspaper La Guardia, and were given to Juan Alvarez by Charlie Quesada (former editor of La Guardia) in the mid 1970s. Most of the photographs were taken by Chuck Miller. Collection also includes the October 1969, issue of La Guardia and three newspaper clippings from Soul City Times showing 1970 welfare demonstrations.

Abstract: Papers and photographs of Juanita Goold and Gerald F. Wilke, who both served in overseas in World War II and married shortly after the war. Juanita Goold Wilke was an officer in the Women's Army Corps (W.A.C.) who worked as a cryptographer in the European Theater. Gerald F. Wilke was a technician with the 5th Army in the North African and Mediterranean theaters. The collections consists mostly of materials relating to Juantia's service including a large number of letters she wrote home to a female friend in Madison. These letters describe W.A.C. training and her observations of the war, the people, and the places that she encountered in Europe. A scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, postcards, and pictures that compliment the events described in the letters. A diary and journal contain small entries that often repeat information from the letters or scrapbooks. Military papers include some reports dealing with the disposition of cryptographic documents, though they do not go into great detail. Also included in the collection is a scrapbook detailing Gerald's service. Photographs and paper ephemera compliment the written narrative within the book to give a brief summary of Gerald's World War II service. Photographs include many shots of Juanita in W.A.C. uniform as well as shots from W.A.C. training camps.

Abstract: Views of Black River Falls, Wisconsin, collected by Judge Harry Perry and made by photographers Charles Van Schaick and Ben Heller, circa 1900-1914. The majority of the images are of the October 6, 1911, flood in Black River Falls, documenting damage along the river and in the town. The Van Schaick images include views of the flood as well as images of a railroad bridge over the river, the funeral of postmaster Martin Lien, a Navy memorial boat launch, circa 1907, and rebuilding after the flood. Many of the Heller images of the flood were included in “Disaster at Black River Falls, Wis.,” a series of photographs by Heller. Other Heller images show the construction of the powerhouse at Black River Falls and businesses along the bank of the Black River.

Abstract: Papers of Judith Ann Faber, a University of Wisconsin-Madison student, mainly pertaining to a number of Republican and conservative organizations in which she was active. Included are leaflets, clippings, resolutions, petitions, press releases, and a small quantity of personal correspondence. Of special note are campaign materials issued in behalf of Barry Goldwater in 1964 and one folder on the University of Wisconsin Committee to Support the People of South Vietnam.

Abstract: The Judith Ladinsky papers document the scholarly and professional work of Professor Judith Ladinsky at the Department of Population Health Sciences in the University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical School. Professor Ladinsky contributed work to the fields of cell biology and preventative medicine with particular respect to the availability of primary and preventative care to disadvantaged populations. Ladinsky was Chair of the Health Committee of the United States Committee for Scientific Cooperation with Vietnam and in that capacity made over one-hundred trips to Vietnam to distribute medical supplies, train medical professionals, and organize primary care in that country. The collection contains files related to Ladinsky's scholarly research, work for the Committee for Scientific Cooperation with Vietnam, correspondence, and published work, as well as a collection of public health posters from Vietnam. The collection also contains a great deal of visual and audio-visual materials including Ladinsky's slides and video recordings created for the Committee for Scientific Cooperation.

Abstract: Papers of Judith Strasser, a poet, author, newspaper journalist, and radio interviewer and producer. The collection includes: personal correspondence and journals which she drew from when writing Black Eye along with several drafts, publisher responses, reviews, and the final manuscript of the book; her poetry writings, including drafts and manuscripts of published and unpublished works; her research, tape interviews, drafts, and completed book of Facing Fear: Cancer and Politics, Courage and Hope; drafts of the unpublished work for Made for You and Me: A Study of the American Land; and newspaper articles, interviews and tape reels for her Out Loud series. Also includes a few fiction stories as well as several leaflets and writings relating to workshops and seminars she either attended or where she was a guest lecturer.

Abstract: Papers of Judy Austermiller assembled during her project of writing a history of the Stern Fund (also known as the Stern Family Fund and the Edgar Stern Family Fund) for the Fund. Included are photocopies and originals of Stern Fund correspondence with grantees and between family members; memoranda, tax returns, and grant lists; notes, transcripts, and audio recordings of interviews with people affiliated with the Fund; clippings and articles on the Fund, grantees, and foundations; surveys of grantees; a draft of the history; and biographical files on David R. Hunter, well-known director of the Fund from 1964 to 1987.

Abstract: Papers of an ABC news science editor, consisting chiefly of reference files on various United States efforts to go into space. Included are notes, press kits, training manuals, flight plans, lunar trajectory charts, films, and photographs of the Apollo and Skylab missions. Also included are scripts for two award-winning ABC News Closeup programs: “Closeup on Fire” and “Closeup on Oil: The Policy Crisis”; scripts for specials on earthquakes and the space program; 1974 daily science news scripts; and a manuscript about Bergman's experiences as a journalist specializing in scientific subjects.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1985-1987, of Wiley, a speaker, writer, and activist from Erie, Pennsylvania, who founded Prolifers for Survival (1979-1987) as a bridge between pro-life and anti-nuclear groups. She also organized “We Will Stand Up,” a campaign to promote abortion-free cities for the 1987 papal visit to the U.S., and was a founding lay member of the Pax Center, a Benedictine community for peace and justice. The papers document her evolving stance on the pro-life issue and include her views on peace and disarmament, feminism, and her ties to the Catholic Church. The bulk of the collection consists of her published articles, correspondence and “We Will Stand Up” campaign materials and photographs, but also includes materials on Prolifers for Survival and other pro-life groups, a videotaped television interview, a tape-recorded speech, and a 1994 oral history interview.

Abstract: Papers documenting the personal and professional life of Julia Edwards, a foreign correspondent in post-World War II Germany who wrote numerous articles and two books, The Occupiers (1967) and Women of the World: The Great Foreign Correspondents (1988). Edwards worked for several newspapers and on a free-lance basis. She was a member of the National Press Club and the Overseas Press Club where she served for over a decade as chairman of the Ross Award committee and from which she received the Overseas Press Club Citation for Excellence in 1989.

Abstract: Papers relating to the movement originated by Julia Grace Wales known as the "Wisconsin Plan for Continuous Mediation without Armistice." There are drafts of the plan and correspondence with leaders of the peace movement including Louis P. Lochner and Jane Addams, and an interview with President Woodrow Wilson by David Starr Jordan and Lochner. Several letters written by Wales from the Netherlands and Scandinavian countries in 1915-1916 reflect conditions in neutral countries during the war.

Abstract: Papers of Captain Julian W. Hinkley, Company E, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Included is correspondence; diaries (1862, 1864); scrapbooks of newspaper clippings containing biographical information, membership lists, and veteran reunion activities (1890-1907); and handwritten essays about the 3rd Wisconsin, used extensively in publications. Also present is an unpublished essay containing research on cosmology, geology, archaeology, Darwin, and American Indian burial finds.

Abstract: Julie Haydon, born in 1910, in Oak Park, Illinois, was a stage and screen actress who originated the role of Laura in Tennessee Williams' play "The Glass Menagerie" in 1944. She was an actress-in-residence at the College of St. Theresa, Winona, Minnesota from 1967-1977, and lived in La Crosse, Wisconsin from 1977 until the time of her death in 1994. The collection, mostly photocopies, consists mainly of clippings about Haydon and her husband, George Jean Nathan. It also contains correspondence, playbills, photographs and a deconstructed scrapbook. The La Crosse Public Library Archives does not hold the originals for this collection.

Abstract: The Julius Adler papers document the research and professional activity of Emeritus Professor Julius Adler in the Department of Biochemistry and Genetics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Adler's work concerns sensory response, especially in fruit flies as a method of understanding the how brains function. Adler also contributed work on the Escherichia coli bacterium to the field of chemotaxis (the study of how organisms move in relation to chemical stimuli). The collections includes published and unpublished writing, correspondence, general files, photographs, lab notebooks, and awards and accolades.

Abstract: Papers of a Milwaukee industrialist and former Republican governor who served in elective office from 1938 through 1942. The papers chiefly relate to Heil's public career and consist of chronologically-arranged correspondence, speeches, press releases, campaign briefing books, microfilmed biographical clippings, memorabilia, photographs, and other miscellany. Although much of the correspondence is routine, there are several letters from prominent individuals such as Frank Knox, Frances Perkins, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harold Stassen, Henry L. Stimson, Alexander Wiley, and Wendell L. Willkie.

Abstract: Files of the Superintendent of Schools, primarily documenting involvement in the process of changing boundaries of school districts, as well as participation in numerous inter-county committees responsible for determining boundary changes that crossed county lines. Included are minutes of public hearings, appeals, correspondence, orders, petitions, and other legal documents. The case files concern Mauston, Necedah, Wisconsin Dells, the towns of Lindina and Wonewoc, and other places. The inter-county files primarily consist of orders containing legal descriptions of alterations. These primarily refer to Jackson, Monroe, Sauk, and Vernon counties. Also notable are memoranda, detailed cost and assessment analyses, and a master plan for the Juneau consolidation program during the early 1950s.

Abstract: Annual reports, some including school censuses, submitted by school district clerks to the county superintendent of schools. Annual reports provide aggregate statistical information regarding number of students, teacher salary, enrollment, and financial statements. Census records provide names and information about persons less then 20 years of age residing in the school district, some family information and student attendance and enrollment data. Also present are miscellaneous records including scattered Board of Education minutes, 1914-1915, and superintendent's records primarily correspondence and resolutions pertaining to alterations of school district boundaries.

Abstract: Eighty out of approximately ninety one-half-hour episodes of the television series Justice, based on cases from the National Legal Aid Society which upholds justice by punishing the guilty or getting them the help they need to rehabilitate. Stars Gary Merrill in the first and second seasons as lawyer Jason Tyler and William Prince in the third season as lawyer Richard Adams. Sponsored by the Borden Company. Narrator: Westbrook Van Voorhis. Produced by NBS Television Productions; a Talent Associates-John Rust Production. These episodes aired between 1954 and 1956. Also includes excerpts of the first episode, "The Baker's Sons" and a restaged episode of "Hard to Get." The films are all in black and white with sound. All are 16 mm and all but four episodes are positive kinescopes. The exceptions are noted in the contents list.
