Abstract: Records of the Highlander Research and Education Center, 1917-2017, an adult education center and its predecessor, the Highlander Folk School, documenting its programs and workshops including labor, civil rights, and Appalachian poverty, and the harassment of Highlander by government agencies. Abstract: Personal and professional papers of a theatrical and motion picture producer active in the United States, Canada, and England. The collection documents both Elkins' career and personal life, and to a lesser extent, the career and personal life of actress Claire Bloom, Elkins' wife from 1969 to 1976. Included are a general subject file of correspondence, agreements, clippings, and financial records relating to Elkins' work as an actors' representative and producer; personal papers of Elkins and Bloom; and fragmentary corporate records of Elkins' many production companies. Among the productions with the greatest documentation are the films Alice's Restaurant, A Doll's House, and Oh! Calcutta!; and stage plays Best Laid Plans, A Doll's House, Golden Boy, Oh! Calcutta!, The Rothschilds, the South African plays Sizwe Banzi Is Dead and The Island, A Streetcar Named Desire, and This Winter's Hobby. Among papers in the general subject file are materials pertaining to Robert Culp, Alex Haley, John Ireland, Van Johnson, James Komack, John V. Lindsay, and Steve MacQueen.

Abstract: Papers of a nationally prominent journalism educator at New York University. Half of the collection documents Krieghbaum's concern with coverage of science by the mass media. This material, which consists of correspondence, speeches, articles, newsclippings, questionnaires, minutes, and reports, is especially good for his involvement with the National Science Foundation, the National Association of Science Writers, and the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing. Three boxes of correspondence, speeches, articles, and miscellany concern his membership in the Association of Journalism School Administrators and the Association for Education in Journalism. Coverage is best for his presidencies of these organizations in 1960 and 1971, respectively. The balance of the collection consists of correspondence, reports, articles, and books by Krieghbaum, and clippings about his other journalism-related activities. Located here is material pertaining to a report prepared for the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in 1959 and a survey conducted for the American Association of Industrial Editors in 1961.

Abstract: Collotype prints of views from a portfolio of the Hillside School, Iowa County, Wisconsin, believed to have been designed, photographed, and lettered by Frank Lloyd Wright and used between 1893 and 1900. The school was run by Jane Lloyd Jones and Ellen Lloyd Jones, aunts of Frank Lloyd Wright. Included are images of the Jones sisters; students involved in classroom activities and playing golf and football; and views of the house, school, and surrounding countryside. Also included are photographic reproductions of the original portfolio enclosure.

Abstract: Photographs, photograph albums, collotype prints, and a diploma collected by Sydney Wood relating to the Hillside Home School (Iowa County, Wisconsin) and the Lloyd Jones family. Included in the collection are three photograph albums documenting the Hillside Home School, circa 1892-circa 1920, a combination home, school, and farm founded by Jane and Ellen Lloyd Jones in 1887 near Spring Green, Wisconsin; a composite of the school's graduating class of 1886; and a 1905 diploma from the school for Alice Lloyd Jones. The collection also includes an incomplete set of collotype prints and an original portfolio envelope used to promote the school and believed to have been designed, photographed, and lettered by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the nephew of Jane and Ellen Lloyd Jones. Additional images include a drawing and a photograph of the Hillside Home School, the building designed by Wright in 1902. Images in the photograph albums include interior and exterior views of Hillside Home School buildings, students, teachers, and the surrounding landscape as well images of members of the Lloyd Jones family. In addition to images of the school, the untitled album also includes additional collotype prints and photographs related to the Tower Hill Assembly and the Lloyd Jones family including the family patriarch Jenkin Lloyd Jones.

Abstract: Papers of a writer, newspaperman, and Washington news commentator for NBC and ABC, primarily consisting of scripts, journals, speeches, and recordings. Scripts and discs relate almost exclusively to Baukhage's regularly-scheduled ABC radio program Baukhage Talking. Among the news events covered in the scripts are World War II, the 1944 political conventions, President Roosevelt's death, Truman's inauguration, the Nuremberg trials, the Cold War, and the Berlin crisis. Among the recordings are broadcasts about Roosevelt's funeral, the Japanese surrender, a speech by Andrei Gromyko before the Security Council in 1947, and Thomas E. Dewey's concession to Truman in 1948. The journals are comprised of notes on interviews during the 1940's with Washington, D.C., personages such as James F. Byrnes, John Foster Dulles, Harry Hopkins, Cordell Hull, Louis Johnson, George C. Marshall, Wayne L. Morse, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Robert A. Taft. Also present is an autobiographical manuscript and a history of Stars and Stripes. The remainder of the collection is comprised of speeches, fragmentary correspondence, and miscellaneous early writings.

Abstract: Papers of Hilton E. Hanna, an international vice-president of the Amalgamated Meatcutters and Butcher Workmen of America, primarily documenting his work as executive assistant to Secretary-Treasurer Patrick Gorman and his personal involvement in labor education groups in Madison, Wisconsin from the 1950s into the late 1970s. Also documented is Hanna's role as writer for union and other publications, as contributor to local public radio programs, speech writer, and co-author of Pat Gorman's biography. Photographs document Hanna's general career and labor activities and provide the only documentation here of his work as a labor specialist for the State Department in Nigeria and Ghana in 1955.

Abstract: Records of a non-profit corporation created in 1960 as the Historic Sites Foundation, which was authorized to receive and administer private funds for the benefit of the Wisconsin Historical Society, specifically for the promotion and operation of historic sites in Wisconsin. Around 1999 the name was changed to the Circus World Museum Foundation reflecting the actual scope of its interest. The records document the administration of the foundation and its work on behalf of the Society.

Abstract: Records of a non-profit community association which coordinated the redevelopment of the Historic Third Ward area of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The records date largely from the late 1980s through the 1990s; few records exist from the association's early years. The collection provides remarkably detailed information on the association's activities, especially its award-winning Streetscape Project. The project redesigned streets, lighting, and the overall appearance of the ward. Design and planning studies document the economic potential and architectural history of the ward. The records of the association's Architectural Review Board (ARB) contain details on how local property owners complied with design standards. The collection also includes numerous blueprints of the Streetscape Project and the association-sponsored parking structure (a retail and parking facility). No blueprints exist for individual buildings except for those submitted to the ARB, which are usually details of exteriors. Photographs of building exteriors are available for many of the structures.

Abstract: Transcribed and original letters written by Potter mainly from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin to family members in Massachusetts, and a few letters directed to her. The letters describe the life of a woman in territorial Wisconsin: household duties, raising children, religious and social life, and tending the sick. There is also mention of runaway slaves; national politics; outbreaks of cholera, smallpox, and scarlet fever; the local economy; descriptions of the family's land and livestock holdings; and attitudes towards new immigrants. Also in the collection are two letters (1885 and 1891) to Susan Potter DeGraff from two of her brothers (Hitty's children); several schoolgirl compositions; a 1911 clipping from a Wauwatosa newspaper giving details of the family history; and a typed copy of an 1864 manuscript about the history of the Johnston and Upson families. Most of the letters are photocopies of transcriptions, but sixteen are original letters.

Abstract: Papers of the Hitz family, compiled by John B. Hitz, with some information on other extended family, especially Frederick C. Winkler and the Winkler family, mostly from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Includes family correspondence, mainly discussing their personal affairs, photographs, scrapbooks and artifacts that focus on the lives of these family members and other relatives, and genealogical histories for the Hitz and Winkler families. Some of the photographs are early photographic processes, such as daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, and albumen prints. Of special interest is the typescript account of Carl Winkler's 1843 emigration from Bremen to New York; the letters and military records of Rudolph Hitz, who served as a surgeon in the U.S. Army in the Montana Territory from 1867-1869; and Henry Hitz's letters from the Army (where he was a surgeon) during World War I. The collection also contains news clippings, notes, and letters of Harold Hitz Burton, J. Edgar Hoover, and Norman Mailer, usually about personal affairs, sent to members of the Hitz family.

Abstract: Records of the lumber business and other investments of Gideon C. Hixon and his son Frank P. Hixon of La Crosse, Wisconsin. Correspondence, letter books, journals, ledgers, and other financial and legal papers document the extensive business enterprises of the Hixon family in Wisconsin and other states in the Midwest (Kansas, Minnesota, and Missouri), West, and South as well as Ontario and British Columbia. Various lumber company records contain information on many facets of the industry, especially in northwestern Wisconsin, including transportation and freight rates, lumber grading and pricing, the use of water and water rights, and taxation. Also included is pre-1900 correspondence containing information and hand-sketched illustrations of the logmarks used in that region. Lumber industry labor relations, union activity, and the influence of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) is documented in letters written from 1917 to 1920. Other industrial and commercial concerns documented in the collection include flour and woolen mills, cattle ranches, tanneries, banks, railroads, pulp and paper manufacturing, electric power, and street railways. Included are business records, 1878-1919, of the T.B. Scott Lumber Company, a major affiliate of Hixon and Company as well as company records from the Crosby Hardwood Company; the Crosby Cattle Company; the Rousseau and Shepard Lumber Company; the Oneida Lumber Company; the McCloud River Lumber Company; the National Cooperage Company; Davis, Medary & Platz; and others.

Abstract: This collection is comprised of records of the Hixon Forest Nature Center, which was operated by the Friends of Hixon Forest, Inc. and was located in Hixon Forest, a 790 acre city park in the city of La Crosse, Wisconsin, from 1983-2008. Most materials date from 1985-1997, and include four series: historical background, administrative files, financial materials, and related materials and organizations. The group dissolved and re-emerged as the Myrick Hixon Ecopark in 2008.
