Abstract: Records of Bearings for Re-establishment, an organization formed in 1965 to provide support and counseling to help former priests and other clergy return to secular life. The organization dissolved in 1973. Included are a recorded historical interview; administrative records of the main New York City office and various satellite offices; financial and fundraising records; correspondence; client files; information on Opportunities for Professional Transition, a for-profit counseling subsidiary, and related organizations; plus a filmed interview with William Restivo, founder of the organization. The client files contain detailed information on the career and personal lives of approximately 3000 individuals.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1967-1972, of Beatrice Kabler, a Madison, Wisconsin housewife and Republican politician who was a founder and chairman of Wisconsin Citizens for Family Planning, a statewide organization formed in 1966 to revise Wisconsin's restrictive birth control law. The papers, which comprise her files as an officer and lobbyist for that organization, consist of correspondence of Kabler and Marylu Raushenbush, another founder and officer of WCFP; minutes; mailings and informational material issued by WCFP; an extensive reference file concerning family planning, abortion, pregnancy, and related topics; drafts of legislation, public statements, and other material relating to lobbying; information pertaining to the position of Wisconsin Protestant and Catholic churches on the issue; and xeroxed clippings concerning birth control in Wisconsin. Prominent correspondents include Gene Boyer, Kathryn Clarenbach, Alan F. Guttmacher, Robert Kastenmeier, and Gaylord Nelson.

Abstract: Dale and Betty Kendrick owned and operated the Behind The Brewery Gallery at 1026 South Front St. in La Crosse, Wisconsin, from 1971-2009. The Gallery supported local artists who committed to completing masters degrees in art or art education, and sponsored art students through art awards or interest grants in conjunction with the UW-La Crosse Annual All-Student Art Show. The Gallery was put on the market in 2011. Materials in this collection have been arranged chronologically and include exhibition cards, event invitations, photos, and correspondence related to the Gallery. In the last binder are reminiscences of former students and artists of the Gallery.

Abstract: Tape-recorded interviews conducted in 1976 by Clem Imhoff for the Beloit Bicentennial Commission with black and white residents of Beloit, Wisconsin, concerning migration of blacks to the city from Kentucky and Mississippi after World War I and their lives before and after the move. Included in the interviews are references to employment and labor problems at Fairbanks-Morse, education, churches, the Women's Community Club, Beloit College, and the local chapter of the NAACP. The 15 interviewees include Sadie Bell, Rubie Bond, David Fifield, Ambrose Gordon, Ben Gordon, Lorenzo Grady, Anne and Neal Harris, Walter Ingram, Robert Irrman, D.W. Abstract: Papers, mainly 1930-1979, of Ben Bergor, a Madison-based magician, entertainer, and booking agent, together with papers of his sister, Olivia Monona, an opera singer, and their father, Benedict Goldenberger. The papers document Bergor's Madison entertainment agency, his involvement in magicians' organizations, and his humor library. Monona's papers document her career as an opera singer. Goldenberger's papers primarily document his life as a student in the 1870s and genealogical correspondence with his son-in-law, historian John O. Holzhueter. Visual materials document Bergor's and Monona's entertainment careers, while the audio materials document various performances and broadcasts.

Abstract: Papers, 1935-2011, of author Ben Logan, consisting primarily of drafts and materials related to his books, The Land Remembers: The Story of a Farm and Its People (1975), The Empty Meadow (1983), and Christmas Remembered (1997), and other writings including an unpublished novel based on his experiences in World War II (“Something Beyond the Sea”), other fiction, articles, screenplays and filmstrip scripts, from the time he was a student at the University of Wisconsin, in a creative writing program in Mexico, and while employed for Ford Farming and United Methodist Communications. Abstract: Papers of the Reverend Benjamin F. Stucki, long-time director of the Winnebago Indian School, Neillsville, Wisconsin. Included is general correspondence; articles and sermons related to Winnebago Indians; correspondence and reports of the National Fellowship of Indian Workers, 1935-1958; and correspondence with the American Bible Society, 1902-1909, regarding publication of the Winnebago Bible. Also present is a manuscript version in Winnebago of a portion of the Bible, written by the Reverends John Stacy and Jacob Stucki in 1906.

Abstract: Papers of B.F. Heuston, a Trempealeau County, Wisconsin lumberman, land speculator, general store owner, and county official, including correspondence (1850-89), diaries (1862-78), account books (1849-60, 1864-79), reminiscences, and historical notes on Trempealeau County. Most of the correspondence concerns Heuston's Civil War service with Co. C, 22nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The Civil War letters and diaries describe the 22nd Regiment's surroundings in Tennessee, Georgia, South and North Carolina, and Virginia; the Atlanta Campaign and Sherman's march through Georgia; Heuston's wounding at Resaca and subsequent stays in army hospitals, especially at Camp Chase General Hospital (Columbus, Ohio); and racial and abolitionist concerns, including the arrest of the 22nd Regiment's officers for refusing to return slaves, Heuston's teaching experiences in a Negro school (1863), and controversies about arming Blacks, Northern education, and enlistment of Blacks. Trempealeau County materials include a typewritten history (1890), including biographical sketches of early settlers and landowners; and a typescript concerning an old French post near Trempealeau. Also includes pages for the “Fonetik Longhand Writer,” “The pronouncing system of B.F. Heuston,” and handwritten articles on temperance, prohibition, the Pan American railroad, and “The Negro problem” (1890).

Abstract: An architectural design firm of La Crosse, Wis., called variously Bentley and Merman, Merman and Skogstad, and Otto Merman Architect. The architects involved were Percy D. Bentley (1885-1968), Otto A. Merman (1890-1935) and Herbert W. Skogstad (d. 1929). Bentley was a La Crosse native who attended the Armour Institute in Chicago. During his brief practice with Merman in La Crosse, the two designed a large number of distinguished Prairie School residences. After Bentley’s departure in 1919, former assistant and partner Otto A. Merman associated with Herbert W. Skogstad from 1922-1929. Skogstad was a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the nature of commissions expanded after this partnership was established to include work for local institutions and businesses as well as residences. Merman continued the practice solo after Skogstad’s death in 1929 until his death in 1935. The microfilmed records are of architectural drawings of buildings designed by these professional associations consist of nearly 300 projects, just over half of which are residential in type. Another quarter of the designs were for commercial buildings, the remaining quarter for public buildings and schools. Most projects were commissioned for locations in La Crosse and other Wisconsin cities with a few in Minnesota and one each in Iowa and Indiana.

The collection consists of drawings from almost 300 projects, primarily residential though also including several schools, other public buildings, and businesses. Most are located in La Crosse and other Wisconsin cities with a few in Minnesota and one each in Iowa and Indiana.

Abstract: Two photograph albums belonging to Benton L. Minor of La Crosse, Wisconsin. Photographs in the first album are of Minor and the Minor family. Some photographs depict Minor in the military during World War II; also included are photos of Camp New Wood of the Civilian Conservation Corps Company 2616: 2nd Subdistrict McCoy. The other album contains images taken by Minor during his military service in Europe and northern Africa during World War II.

Included is material pertaining to the elementary report card and kindergarten activity programs she developed; and files, scrapbooks, and diaries documenting her travels and activities as a founder of the Wisconsin chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.

Abstract: Papers and photographs of Bernard E. Weigel, a radio operator-gunner in the 466th Bomber Group of the 8th Air Force, who flew thirty-four missions over Europe during World War II. His military papers contain a large number of orders from the various military groups that he served in, flight records that document his missions in Europe, as well as his official separation records from the military. His personal papers include letters that he wrote home during the war, in which he describes his experiences at stateside camps as well as at Attelbridge, his base in England. There are also many newspaper and magazine clippings relating to his service on which Weigel has written short descriptions. The photographs document both the stateside and overseas portions of Weigel's military service, including many shots of his training at Camp Livingston, Louisiana while he was still a member of the 32nd Division. There are also five shots from his mission to deliver fuel to General George S. Patton's army in France. This collection also contains portrait photos of Weigel, pictures of his World War II crew, and shots of Weigel revisiting some of his bases in the second half of the century.

Several photographs depict the boats used in competitions and of the winners holding their trophies as well as images of Bernard’s Boat House which had been on Lake Mendota. Also included are photographs taken from the 1927 airshow featuring Charles Lindbergh and his plane, The Spirit of St. Louis.

Abstract: Papers of Bernard J. Paulson, a Milwaukee advertising executive, entrepreneur, inventor, and writer, documenting both his business career and his personal life. The papers include the personal correspondence and financial records of Paulson, Getta Broughton, and other members of his family; records of early work as a salesman and writer for the International Harvester Company in Montana and Chicago; and limited business correspondence, financial records, client records, and advertising copy from a number of Milwaukee advertising agencies with which Paulson was associated, 1921-1961. The collection also includes drawings, correspondence, and patent records for other many items invented by Paulson, three 16mm home movies, 1957-1959, and photographs and negatives showing family activities, Paulson company products, and International Harvester machinery.

Domogalla, a Wisconsin water pollution expert and former Madison city biochemist, primarily concerning his work as founder of Applied Biochemists, Inc., a Butler, Wisconsin company. The company specialized in control of weeds from lakes in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Included are lake treatment project files; business development correspondence; background studies, reports, and equipment information; and experiments and consultation for clients.

Abstract: Papers, 1915-1976, of Dutch journalist Bernard Person, who delivered daily broadcasts to the Nazi-occupied Netherlands during World War II and was later decorated by the Dutch Government. As a newspaper reporter, Person covered the French occupation of the Ruhr and the 1924 trial of Adolf Hitler in Munich. Person brought his family to the United States in March 1939. In 1945, he was assigned to the United Nations representing Dutch newspapers. He remained at that post until 1978, when he retired. The materials, almost entirely in Dutch, document his career in journalism.

Included are correspondence, diaries, subject files, and family papers. Bernhard C. Ziegler's correspondence and subject files relate to his affairs as head of the West Bend Aluminum Company, B.C. Ziegler and Company, and the First National Bank of West Bend. Edna Ziegler's diaries, correspondence, and papers relate to her activities in the Washington County Historical Society, cultural arts programs, the Wisconsin Arts Foundation and Council, and the Ziegler Foundation. Abstract: Records, mainly 1948 to 1975, of a congregation founded in 1904 as Agudas Achim. In 1949 members of Agudas Achim built a new synagogue, the Beth Israel Center. Included are minutes, correspondence, financial records, printed materials, newsletters, photographs and oral history interviews with former officers of the congregation; Yetta Daitch, Sam Onheiber, Celia Rosenberg, and Adolph and Janet Weinshel. Materials document the center's construction, and the administration, fundraising, philanthropic, and social activities of the congregation, its Talmud Torah, Sisterhood, and Men's Club. A minute book (in Yiddish) documents the administration of the center's predecessor, Agudas Achim, from 1908 to 1920, and is available only on microfilm.

Abstract: Bette Barnes spent 36 years at UW-Madison as a graduate student, lecturer, and advocate for women in academia, from 1947-1991. Barnes was a life member of Sigma Delta Epsilon/Graduate Women in Science (GWiS). She was the chair of the Sexual Harassment Policy Committee in the 1970s and 1980s, and she was an active member of the Committee on Women's Issues in the Medical School. Her papers include her personal research, conference materials, university sexual harassment policy paperwork, and committee notes from 1950-2007.

Abstract: Papers of Betty Gannett, an officer of the Communist Party (USA) primarily relating to her work as a Marxist theoretician, writer, and teacher. The majority of the collection consists of lectures and papers, notes, and writings of other kinds on political and educational topics, primarily the Communist Party, the role of economics in society, history, philosophy, and scientific socialism. There is also a very small quantity of personal correspondence (including some letters from Elizabeth Gurley Flynn), 1942-1971, and some material relating to the litigation to deport her under provisions of the Smith Act. On tape is a recording of Gannett's funeral.

Abstract: Papers of Betty Rollin, an author and news broadcaster best known for her autobiographical books First, You Cry, which concerned her experience with breast cancer, and Last Wish, which concerned her mother's terminal cancer and suicide. Included are clippings, recorded interviews, photographs and other biographical materials; scripts, memoranda, proposals, and film clips for news stories broadcast by NBC Nightly News, Today, Women Like Us, and ABC Nightline; multiple drafts of her books; and correspondence with editors, agents, readers and viewers, and friends. Extensive files of reader mail contain many personal accounts of experiences with cancer and family suicide.

Abstract: Papers of Betty Walker Smith, 1938-2000, a former city of Madison (Wisconsin) Republican alder and longtime advocate for civil rights, women's rights and children's day care. Married to Bill Smith, a Madison lawyer and alder, and appointed to the Governor's Commission on the Status of Women, Betty Smith's political life began before she herself was elected to council. Her papers reflect that involvement through her husband's campaign, fair housing, and other issues. Personal reminiscences can be found interspersed in the General and Political Files. The Political Files also relate to her successful alder campaigns in the 19th Ward (1973-1979), her unsuccessful run for mayor of Madison in 1979, and her work with the city council on the Civic Center and State Street Mall. The Senate Files contain materials from her state Senate campaigns in 1972 and 1976, including press releases, political addresses, notes for speeches and issue stances.

Abstract: Papers of Beverly Butler, a Wisconsin writer specializing in young adult fiction often based on historical themes. Blind since age 14, Butler graduated cum laude from Mount Mary College in Milwaukee (1954) where she studied creative writing, and she received a master of arts degree from Marquette University in 1961. In addition to writing, she has taught creative writing at Mount Mary College and at the Rhinelander School of the Arts. The collection includes professional correspondence and manuscripts of her books published between 1955 and 1982, including Captive Desire which was published under the pseudonym Kathleen Victor.
