Abstract: Papers, 1888-1958, of Guy Yoakum, a minister at Hope Congregational Church in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin (1923-1935), and civic director of the City Club of Chicago (1953-1955). Personal and professional papers, including correspondence, sermons, copies of diary pages, and other writings including chapters of an unpublished book on American religion, news clippings, and photographs. Guy Yoakum was the father of Robert Yoakum, a writer and syndicated columnist.

Abstract: Papers, circa 1932-2012, of Robert Yoakum, a writer, syndicated columnist, and humorist, whose twice-weekly "Another Look" column (1971 to 1986) ran in over 80 newspapers during its run. Also documented is his writing for publications such as Columbia Journalism Review and the The New Republic, particularly his articles on the censure of Senator Thomas J. Dodd, his work as a speechwriter for President John F. Kennedy and other Democratic Party campaigns, and his writings about Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS).

Abstract: Records, 1873-1937, consisting primarily of financial papers, for a general store and later, funeral parlor, located in Batavia, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, which began in the 19th century and continued to 1980. G.A. Leifer and his son, Herbert, opened the store. Herbert Leifer continued to run the store after his father’s death and then took a partner named Hintz. Gerald Yoho, who married Elaine Leifer in 1946, became a business partner and bought out the other partners in 1965.

Abstract: Papers, 1953-1996, of Stanley York, a Wisconsin State Assemblyman (R-Buffalo, Pepin, and Pierce Counties), pastor, and executive in various public sector and non-profit positions. The majority of the records relate to his tenure in the Wisconsin State Assembly (1967-1970), consisting of constituent correspondence, bill files, reference materials, reports, meeting minutes, news clippings, and committee files pertaining to such issues as public welfare, sex education, the upper Mississippi river basin, and disruptions at the University of Wisconsin. A small amount of materials relate to his post-legislative career as Commissioner of the Department of Industry, Labor and Human Relations; Commissioner of the Public Service Commission; Executive Director of the League of Wisconsin Municipalities; Executive Assistant of the Department of Health and Social Services; and Director of the Winnebago Mental Health Institute, as well as his role as a pastor for the United Church of Christ.

Abstract: Records of the Milwaukee Federation and individual chapters of the Catholic action youth group, Young Christian Workers. Included are agendas, correspondence, financial records, minutes, newsletters, and reports. The records document YCW programs and projects such as the Basic Social Action Program, workshops on dating, retreats, International Days and Weeks, special inquiries on migrant workers and racial discrimination, study days and weekends, and training courses. Scrapbooks document Milwaukee's participation in the September 1957 International YCW Pilgrimage to Rome and YCW Teachers' Group. Also present are a few records of the Milwaukee Chapter of the Association of Catholic Trade Unionists (1940-43), the Cardijn Center, the Christian Family Movement, and the College Young Christian Students.

Abstract: Records, mainly 1968-1972, of the official youth organization of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin which for most of its history was known as the Young Democratic Clubs of Wisconsin. Included are constitutions; executive committee minutes; correspondence of members of the executive board; position statements and other records pertaining to state conventions; fragmentary financial records; files on various local and district YDCW units and on other groups such as the Wisconsin Youth Council; newsletters, manuals and miscellaneous publications; membership directories; and material pertaining to special projects and activities. Files pertaining to campaign activities are scattered, although there are some segregated materials of note pertaining to Bronson La Follette.

Abstract: Records of a La Crosse, Wisconsin, men's organization, mainly 1883-1974. The organization is also known locally by the name "Family Y," and its membership is open to men and women. The original purpose of the association was to "promote the mental, moral, social, and physical good of the young men" of La Crosse and its vicinity. Religious education also played a large role. Today's programming is geared toward family activities and physical exercise. Materials include board minutes, 1883-1954; photographs, 1926-1980; and scrapbooks, 1942-1974. Newsletters and photographs are also included from two YMCA clubs: the Central High School "Hi-Ys", 1959-1966; and the Men's Y-Club, 1938-1954.

Abstract: Copies of circular letters, minutes, convention papers, publications, reports, resolutions, and other papers of a semi-autonomous the Young People's Socialist League, the youth branch of the Socialist Party of America. The collection primarily documents the more practical aspects of party life and activities, such as meetings, membership, fund raising, committee work, and conventions. The file of publications is comprised of issues of the YPSL newspaper, Challenge (1943-1946), Avanti (a bulletin), the Young Socialist Handbook, and the High School Socialist, as well as individual publications and mimeographed material. Also included is a 1953 report describing YPSL disorganization and lack of membership, a 1940 resolution on socialism and the war, and statements on Cuba, 1961.

Abstract: Records of the national office of the Young Socialist Alliance, a revolutionary Marxist youth group closely allied to the Trotskyist Socialist Workers Party. The YSA was formed in 1960 and it dissolved into the SWP in 1992. The collection documents YSA's role in the protest against the Vietnam War, in various struggles for minority rights, and in numerous other political and social conflicts dating from the 1960s through the 1980s. On microfilm are National Executive Committee minutes, mailings, financial reports, mimeographed materials produced by the national office for intra-party communication, historical files, and detailed narrative reports on local activities during the 1970s. Subject files relate to involvement with the international student movement during the 1980s, and especially with the movement in South Africa; the domestic student movement of the 1970s; trials of several expelled dissidents; conferences and defense cases; and correspondence about diverse organizations such as Prisoners United and the Symbionese Liberation Army. Predating the YSA are bulletins and minutes of the National Action Committee of the Young Socialist League and minutes of the editorial board and mailings of the Young Socialist. Also included is a print of To Make a Revolution, a film by David Weiss concerning the YSA during the early 1970s. A few items, 1965-1971, are available in paper form.

Abstract: Records of the Madison affiliate of the Young Socialist Alliance, formed nationally in 1957 under the influence of the Socialist Workers Party, and active locally from about 1965. Included in the collection are correspondence, administrative records, financial papers, notes, subject files, research materials, and newsclippings illustrating the anti-Vietnam war and other activities of the YSA, and its ties to other activist and radical groups. The papers have been arranged in ten series: organizational records, financial records, convention and election campaign papers, publicity and publications, YSA activity reports, U.W. campus activities, records of cooperation with other groups, general papers and subject file, and records of other Wisconsin and out-of-state locals. Most of the papers date from the mid-1960's to the early 1970's, and partially reflect the original arrangement of the donor, Patrick M. Quinn.

Abstract: Records of the Young Women's Christian Association in Green Bay-De Pere (YWCA), 1919-2007, consisting of founding documents, annual meeting minutes, financial reports, committee and programming materials, and publications, scrapbooks and photographs. The campaign to raise money for the construction of a new building for the organization, which opened in 1962, is well-documented, as are the youth programs, particularly the summer camps White Gables and Wethanketha. Correspondence is sparse. A film of the groundbreaking for the new building and a tape recording of children's performance in the 1990s are also included.

Abstract: Records of a women's organization in La Crosse, Wisconsin, affiliated in 1907 with its parent national organization. Founded locally in 1903, the group seeks to "advance the physical, social, intellectual, moral and spiritual interests" of young women. The modern, national statement of purpose includes the goal of "peace and justice, freedom and dignity for all people." The records include historical materials, board minutes and committee materials (1907-1981), executive files (1907-1938; 1965-1989), incomplete financial materials (1933-1987), and buildings and grounds materials (1961-1987). Also included are materials of several Y.W.C.A. clubs such as Newcomers (1963-1968), Round Table (1933-1987) and Y-Teens (1959-1970).

On microfilm are the minutes of the Board of Managers (1892-1898); annual meetings (1895-1903); Board of Trustees (1899-1908, 1921-1924, 1938-1950); and Board of Directors (1898-1950).

Abstract: Papers created and collected by Alfred F. Young, professor emeritus at Northern Illinois University and notable historian, pertaining mostly to his pursuits expanding and defending the idea of academic freedom. Young is co-founder of the Committee for Academic Freedom in Illinois, which played a major role in the various Staughton Lynd cases put before the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). The papers consist of articles relating to the controversy surrounding the Smithsonian Institution's exhibit, “The Last Act: The Atomic Bomb and the End of World War II,” and reactions of other museums and organizations to the controversy generated by Young for the drafting of his Museum Bill of Rights. The papers relating to the Staughton Lynd case primarily consist of correspondence between Young, AAUP General Secretary Bertram Davis, and Lynd.

Abstract: Papers of Allen Young, a New Left journalist and prominent gay liberation writer and activist. Young wrote extensively on the social action movement and radical activities in the late 1960s and wrote and edited a handful of pioneering books about gays and lesbians in the 1970s. These include his 1971 gay manifesto “Out of the Closet,” “Lavender Culture: Vision of Lesbians and Gay Men,” and “The Gay Report,” by Young and Karla Jay. The bulk of the collection consists of incoming correspondence and a small amount of outgoing correspondence from 1963 to 2000. The letters illuminate his fellow activists' thoughts on social and political issues ranging from the impact of AIDS on the gay community in the 1980s and 1990s to the persecution of gays in Communist Cuba. Other topics covered include environmental activism, communal living, and the natural landscape of western Massachusetts. Also included are article drafts, manuscripts, reviews, subject files, and other materials relating to Young's books and his career as a writer. In addition there are taped interviews with writer Allen Ginsberg and California gay liberation activist Mother Boats.

Abstract: The Crawford Young papers document the scholarly and professional activities of Merwin Crawford Young, professor emeritus of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Young was first made a full professor in 1963 and became the director of the African Studies program. Young's work centered around democracy and state formation in post-colonial Africa. His 1976 work: "The Politics of Cultural Pluralism" was awarded several academic prizes and remains influential in the field. Young retired in 2001.

Professional papers include publicity records, plans, and press kits done while with General Public Relations, Inc., for The Ann Sothern Show, December Bride, and The Loretta Young Show, promotional material for The Rifleman, a scrapbook of his Screen Gems promotional campaign for Father Knows Best, press releases for NBC, 1951-1952, and station and public relations records for WPIX-TV, 1948-1951, and WNEW radio, 1959-1962. The photographs relate to Young's professional activities and his personal life.

Abstract: Papers of Nedrick Young, a screenwriter who refused to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1953 and was blacklisted as a result. Most of the collection documents his career as a screenwriter through biographical material, screenplays for motion pictures and television, and unproduced story ideas for various genres; there is extensive documentation for several unproduced films and for The Defiant Ones (UA, 1958) and Inherit the Wind (UA, 1960). Some were written under the pseudonym Nathan E. Douglas. In 1961, Young joined others in a lawsuit against the Motion Picture Producers' Association for damages incurred in their blacklisting. Concerning the lawsuit, there are files of correspondence, legal documents, exhibits and research materials, clippings, and public relations items. A recorded 1961 Carnegie Hall speech by Young on the threat of the blacklist to young writers is also present.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1967-1968, of a Chicago physician and medical activist chiefly relating to his work as national and Chicago area leader of the Medical Committee for Human Rights. MCHR was a civil rights support group founded in 1964 to provide medical aid to volunteers in Mississippi. It also provided medical aid to the 1968 Democratic Convention, an act which caused Young to be subpoenaed by the House Committee for Un-American Activities (HUAC) in 1968. Included in the records are correspondence to and from Young in his roles as MCHR leader and Chicago physician/activist; correspondence of T.G.G. (George) Wilson, Philadelphia chapter leader and vice chairman during Young's tenure; national and Chicago MCHR records and files about numerous MCHR chapters; activity files on the Southern project of the Chapter, the 1968 Democratic Convention, and anti-American Medical Association organizing; and general subject files containing correspondence, publications, reports, project literature, clippings, press releases, and manuscripts on social action and medical organizations with which Young had contact. Prominent correspondents include H. Jack Geiger, Martin Luther King, Alfred Klinger, Alvin Pouissant, Walter Reuther, Frank Wilkinson, and Andrew Young.

Abstract: William P. Young graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine in 1941 and became a Professor of Surgery at UW-Madison. He was a leader in the field of cardiac surgery, performing a brief off-pump open heart surgery assisted by hypothermia and vena caval ligation in the early 1950s. Young's collection consists of correspondence from patients expressing gratitude, which appears in letters as well as in scrapbooks. It also includes photographs that were used for teaching, writings by Young and others, and a pair of telephoto lens glasses that he made for performing surgeries.
