Abstract: Legislative papers of a Democratic State Senator (1974-) from Janesville who served as majority leader (1982-). The papers chiefly consist of files on two committees which Cullen chaired: the Senate Committee on Aging, Business and Financial Institutions, and Transportation and the Legislative Council's Committee on Mining. The former includes correspondence, memoranda, notes, clippings, reports and research material concerning mortgage subsidization plans, raising the drinking age, property tax deferrals for the elderly, the appointment of Owen Ayres to head the Department of Transportation, and other matters considered by the committee. Mining Committee files include similar documentation as well as agenda, summary meeting transcripts, and public hearing statements. Also included are files on several mining subcommittees Cullen headed, most notably the Subcommittee on Uranium Exploration and Safety. Taken together, the Mining Committee files concern taxation and safety issues raised by mining company exploration of northern Wisconsin during the late 1970's and early 1980's

Also included are writings on culture and politics, including book reviews, poetry, a manuscript on German socialists in America, and a book of Tuli Kupferberg's poetry; transcripts of interviews with Yiddish poet Martin Birnbaum, Ernie Reymer of the International Workers Order, and the editors of the Italian cartoon magazine Strix; pamphlets and posters from other groups; cartoons; mailing lists; and production materials.

Abstract: Personal diaries of George R. Currie, who was appointed to the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 1951 and served as chief justice from 1964 to 1968. A graduate of the Oshkosh State Normal School (now UW-Oshkosh) and of the University of Wisconsin Law School, Currie went on to build a successful law practice in Sheboygan before serving as a judge. The diaries are particularly complete and cover his daily activities including his professional life, contemporary political events, and his work with a number of organizations including the American Legion, Freemasons, the Mead Public Library Board, and Kiwanis. He also writes about his many recreational activities, including gardening, reading, enjoying radio and television programs, and traveling. Also included is a travel diary detailing his month-long trip to Europe in the 1950s.

Abstract: Papers, 1908-2000, of Merle Eugene Curti, a University of Wisconsin history professor (1942-1967), including correspondence, speeches, drafts and notes for publications, and other materials. Widely known for his publications, Curti won a Pulitzer Prize for The Growth of American Thought (1943). His study of Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, The Making of an American Community (1959), pioneered the use of statistical information in the writing of local history.

Abstract: Papers of Cushing, a prominent Massachusetts attorney and political figure, with connections to Wisconsin economic and political activities. Included are photostat copies of Cushing's will and probate records; a volume containing the Wisconsin Supreme Court brief of the case Cushing vs. Hungerford and other papers pertaining to a dispute over ownership of land in the St. Croix River Valley in Wisconsin; and microfilm copies of selected papers from the Cushing Papers at the Library of Congress. The microfilm includes correspondence, legal documents, and newsclippings concerning his land investments; the dispute with William S. Hungerford, 1850-1852; the impeachment of Judge Levi Hubbell; and Wisconsin politics, 1850-1855, particularly the Democratic Party in Wisconsin. Correspondents include Arthur MacArthur, James K. Knowlton, and F. K. Bartlett.

Abstract: Research files of Frank Custer consisting of his research related to Madison (Wis.) and its history including subject files, card files, and photographs. The subject files include news clippings and typewritten notes arranged alphabetically by subject as well as a series of original manuscript editions of Custer's newspaper column, “Looking Backward,” which he wrote for the Capital Times. The card files consist of typewritten notes and news clippings on Madison and Wisconsin history arranged by subject or street location. The photographs are principally of the Madison area and are arranged alphabetically by subject, personal names, street location, or house name. Also included are slides and negatives; larger rolled photographs of the city of Madison, State street, and various people and events; and oversize photographs of sports teams, houses, musical groups, the city of Madison, and miscellaneous people and events.

Abstract: Family papers of Dr. G. Stanley Custer, a physician at the Marshfield Clinic and an avid amateur photographer. Included are an autobiography, diaries, recorded interviews with Dr. Custer, his wife Violet Custer, his brother Frank Custer, and other family members; correspondence; notes and other academic materials from Dr. Custer's education at the University of Wisconsin Medical School; papers relating to Dr. Custer's public life including his activities with choral music and the Presbyterian Church; financial records; histories of the Kohl/Krause and Ebert/Evert families; and photographs of family, high school reunions, medical conditions, and the 1989 dedication of the Marshfield City Hall. The collection also contains material relating to Violet Custer and her activities and has scattered references to Dr. Custer's brothers, Frank Custer, a long-time writer for the Capital Times, and Rudy Custer, who was an executive with the Chicago Bears football team.
