Abstract: Papers of Norman Clapp, a Wisconsin newspaper editor and publisher, Democratic politician, federal and state government administrator, and energy consultant. Included are correspondence, an oral history, memoranda, financial materials, photographs, publicity, research material and studies, draft legislation, clippings, and printed matter. General personal and career papers include extensive correspondence with Lawrence College friends; political associates such as Thomas R. Amlie, Philip La Follette, and Robert M. La Follette Jr.; and family members including his brother, Gordon Clapp. Additional material relates to the movement in Wisconsin to oust Senator Joseph R. McCarthy. Journalistic papers contain incomplete correspondence and financial records concerning his award-winning editorship and management of the Grant County Independent and the Muscoda Progressive. Several boxes relate to Clapp's three unsuccessful attempts to win the Third Congressional District seat in southwestern Wisconsin. In addition to campaign literature, financial records, lists, analyses, and advertising, there is extensive correspondence with national, state, and local party leaders. Files on his career as administrator of the Rural Electrification Administration include correspondence, memoranda, studies, legislation about supplementary financing for the agency, a complete reading file of outgoing correspondence and memoranda (1961-1969), and exchanges with White House staff. Pertaining to his later career as an energy consultant are project files containing correspondence, memoranda, and draft reports on work done in association with David Lilienthal's Resources and Development Corporation and Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation. Of special interest is the file on the 1977 New York City blackout. Photographs include formal and informal portraits, snapshots of the Clapp family, and views of activities as head of the REA (one with Orville Freeman) and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, as a journalist, and as a congressional candidate. These include images of John F. Kennedy, Patrick J. Lucey, Estes Kefaufer, Henry Meier, and William Proxmire.

Abstract: Papers of David E. Clarenbach, a Democratic representative of Wisconsin's 78th Assembly District (Madison, Wisconsin). The collection reflects Clarenbach's political career from his election to the Assembly in 1974 through his bid for Congress in 1992. The bulk of the records are from 1984 to 1992 and consist of working legislative issue and committee files, including incoming and outgoing correspondence, speeches, notes, newsletters, press releases, copies of bills, political research data, memoranda, and clippings. Reflected in the papers is Clarenbach's interest in issues such as AIDS legislation, abortion, gay rights, women's issues, patients' rights, and the divesture of state funds in South Africa.

The tax roll typically gives a description of the property, the name of the owner, assessed valuation, tax levied, and a record of payments. Every tenth year All records prior to 1870 have been preserved. from 1870 to 1940 has been preserved, and every fifth year from 1945-1965 has been preserved. Holdings for 1940 are incomplete. Records are arranged by year and thereunder by property description for real estate and by the owner's name for personal property.

Abstract: Papers of and about George Rogers Clark, the most noted military commander in the western campaigns of the Revolution, gathered by Draper from relatives, descendants, and other historians; by transcripts from archives in Spain, Virginia and other localities for an intended complete biography. Included are papers gathered from Clark's descendants and from others who had proposed biographies, recollections of Clark's role in the early history of Kentucky and the Revolutionary War in the West, notes, copies of documents, and interviews with participants or their descendants. Draper's own voluminous notes and drafts of the first two chapters of Draper's proposed biography are also present.

Abstract: Papers, 1985-2010, of Merrill and John Clark, who operated Roseland Farms, an organic livestock farm in Cassopolis, Michigan. Merrill Clark served a four-year term on the inaugural National Organic Standards Board (NOSB, 1992-1996), and chaired its Livestock Committee. The papers offer partial documentation of Clark's tenure on the NOSB, and John and Merrill Clark's subsequent concerns about the standards established by the NOSB.

There are also several sermons of the Rev. Abstract: Papers of Shirley Clarke, a noted maker of experimental films. Included are personal and professional correspondence, clippings, research and financial material, some production information, and films and audio tapes generated at various stages of the filmmaking process. Best coverage is afforded The Connection (1960) and The Cool World (1963), studies of heroin addiction and life in Harlem. Small files exist on other works including Skyscraper (1959) (an Academy Award-nominated short subject), the Academy Award-winning Robert Frost: A Lover's Quarrel (1963), Portrait of Jason (1967), and films relating to her early interest in dance. There are also files on her awards, lectures on film and film techniques, and activities in the Filmmakers Distribution Center; general correspondence referring to business and professional matters; and journals and other biographical materials.

Abstract: Papers of Leon R. Clausen, president (1924-1948) and chairman of the board (1948-1958) of the J.I. Case Company, a manufacturer of tractors and farm equipment located in Racine, Wisconsin. The papers consist of memoirs, speeches and writings, personal and business correspondence, and subject files. They primarily document Clausen's conservative, anti-Communist political views and his pre-Case business career. A majority of the correspondence is personal, documenting Clausen's property, philanthropies, and political exchanges with a multitude of nationally active conservatives. Family correspondence primarily concerns foreign relatives, but there are exchanges with his brother Fred L. Clausen, an executive at the Van Brunt Manufacturing Co. of Horicon, Wisconsin. Business records in the collection primarily document Clausen's pre-Case employment as signal engineer with the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway (1901-1912) and as executive of the Dain Manufacturing Co. (1912-1924), a subsidiary of John Deere. The Case company records include Clausen's draft history of the company's early labor struggles and confidential internal labor documents (1933-1935) used to support preparation of the manuscript and copies of company memoranda, clippings, and advertising concerning the 1946 strike by the United Automobile Workers Local 180. Classified subject files document Clausen's interest in economics, labor, and politics. The photographs in the collection document highlights in his career.

Abstract: Papers and photographs of Paul B. Clemens, an officer in the Wisconsin National Guard whose forty-five years of service spanned both World Wars. The collection provides a look at his military life as well as his civilian life. Military papers include individual letters from Theodore Roosevelt and John Pershing, as well as more extensive correspondence from William Haan, and Charles King. Service records, certificates, and other military records document his time in the National Guard. Scores of letters congratulating Clemens on his retirement as assistant superintendent of Milwaukee schools show the regard in which he was held by personal and professional associates. Other materials include plans and programs for the opening of the Burns-Clemens Building at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, documents pertaining to Clemens's service in local civic organizations, and newspaper clippings about his son, Paul L. Clemens, a Hollywood portrait painter. Photographs include a signed portrait of William Haan and many photos of Clemens through the years.

Abstract: Records of one of the most active and important of the local organizations which opposed U.S. involvement in the war in Vietnam, together with some personal papers of Sidney Peck, founding chairman, and miscellaneous records of other Cleveland anti-war groups. Peck's papers concern a 1966 teach-in and contain correspondence with A. J. Muste concerning meetings which brought temporary unity to the anti-war movement.

The primary notes in the collection contain research charts and data, vessel logs, slides and notes related to Mortimer's work on Lake Windermere in England in the 1950s and across the Great Lakes in the U.S. throughout the 1960s to the 1980s, especially regarding his time at UW-Milwaukee as the first Director of the Center for Great Lakes Studies (now the School of Freshwater Sciences).

Abstract: Papers of Marshall B. Clinard, a University of Wisconsin sociology professor, concerning his research, World War II work at the Office of Price Administration, and consulting in India on urbanization. Correspondence, 1939-1952, relates almost entirely to Clinard's dissertation on urbanization and criminal behavior (University of Chicago, 1941) and to his book, The Black Market (1952). The collection also contains drafts and working papers for both the book and the dissertation. The working papers consist of notes, statistics, case histories of criminals, personality inventories, articles and clippings, and charts. Materials from the files of the Enforcement Division of the Office of Price Administration, 1942-1946, where Clinard served as principal statistician, include letters, reports, code lists, printed matter, manuals, statistical materials, clippings, shorthand notes, and a history of the OPA. His experiences in India, 1958-1960, as advisor to the government on urban community organization, especially slums, is documented by a 1961 tape recording.

Abstract: Papers, 1967-2007, but mainly 1986-2007, of David Cline, a resident of Jersey City, New Jersey, a veteran of the war in Vietnam, and a leader in several veterans organizations that opposed the wars in Vietnam and Iraq. Included are organizational records of Veterans for Peace (VFP) of which Cline was president, 2000-2006, and e-mails distributed by Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW), as well as information on many peace and veterans organizations such as Bring Them Home Now, United for Peace and Justice, and the Jersey City Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee, a group Cline established to erect a memorial to that city's Vietnam War dead. The national VFP records include executive committee minutes, e-mails exchanged by officers, financial information, convention planning files, membership lists, and administrative subject files.
