Papers of an executive vice-president for radio who joined NBC in 1950. The papers consist of memoranda, correspondence, legal affidavits, publicity and reports. In general the files contain correspondence between Cott and NBC affiliates concerning programming, sale of advertising, daily operations, and network relations. The files are arranged alphabetically.

Some notable files deal with the legal action taken by National Biscuit Company over a NBC advertising campaign called “Chain Lightning,” an idea developed by Cott, and a file on “Operation Booklift,” a charity drive spearheaded by Cott to offer inexpensive novels to the military in remote areas of the world. Vice-Presidents' Files, 1940-1942
Physical Description: 2 boxes (0.6 cubic feet)
Scope and Content Note

A combined file of two vice-presidents for programming: Sidney N. Strotz (1940-1941) and Clarence N. Menser (1942). The files consist only of carbons of outgoing letters and memoranda and generally concern routine policy implementation; program production, especially the development of educational and cultural programs; material relating to the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers; relations with the Federal Communications Commission; and censorship. Divided first by individual, the files are then arranged chronologically. Two primary areas of concern are revealed: war-related emphasis on news coverage, development of patriotic programs, and cooperation with government agencies and secondly, corporate reorganization and emphasis on entertainment rather than educational and cultural programming.

Major correspondents include James Rowland Angell, Bertha Brainard, Samuel Chotzinoff, William S. Hedges, Frank E. Mullen, Frank Russell, A. A. Schecter, Niles Trammell, and Mark Woods.

Wogan, Robert. Papers, 1945-1956
Physical Description: 2 boxes (1.2 cubic feet)
Scope and Content Note: Papers of a supervisor of network program operations, 1952-1955, as well as files he interited from his predecessors, Grant Tinker, 1950-1952, and James E. Kovach, 1948-1950. Also included are papers of R. T. O'Connell, who though listed as assistant to program manager Thomas McCray, seems to have exercised the same duties prior to 1948 as the operations supervisor. The papers are arranged as alphabetical PROGRAM FILES and SUBJECT FILES, which include a variety of material such as memoranda, booking orders, and correspondence relating to scheduling, traffic, timing, and continuity. Programs which are well documented include Collector's Item, Duffy's Tavern, Mind Your Manners, Pee Wee King, Portrait of a City, Truth or Consequences, and Wanted (for which Kovach was also the production supervisor).

Miles, Sackett D. Papers, 1933-1955
Physical Description: 6 boxes (2.4 cubic feet)
Scope and Content Note

Papers of a manager of radio sales services and traffic, consisting of correspondence, facilities contracts, commercial executive orders, and information on scheduling, finances, sponsorship, traffic, broadcast quality, and relations between advertisers and individual affiliates. The papers are arranged as GENERAL PAPERS, ADVERTISERS FILES, and PUBLICATIONS. To coordinate with the sales and spot sales files elsewhere in the NBC Records, one group - the advertisers files - are arranged alphabetically by client and then by program. Miles also maintained a file of NBC Network Advertisers, 1940-1954, bulletins which contain data on radio programs and their sponsors; after 1948 the bulletins contain the same information for television programs. Prior to 1940 this information was presented in chart form together with comparative data for MBS and CBS. Also maintained is an incomplete file of traffic reports which indicate radio program acceptance by network affiliates.

Incorporated with Miles papers is some documentation, 1943-1949, pertaining to the tenure of F. Melville Green, his predecessor.
