Scope and Content Note

Files designated “historical” by NBC, primarily consisting of material on a 1926 RCA-sponsored broadcast of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) “Phantom Banquet” and program logs of WJZ and WJY.

Documentation present on the ambitious MIT broadcast includes correspondence, press releases, newspaper clippings, notes, lists, a program, a MIT magazine, and copies of photoradiograms of the banquet speakers.

WJZ and WJY, both owned and operated by RCA, shared the same New York City studios, with WJY providing cultural programming and WJZ broadcasting music and entertainment of a wider appeal. Although WJZ was the dominant partner, it operated on a restricted schedule because of frequency-sharing with other area stations. Its logs cover the period from acquisition from the Westinghouse Corporation, May 1923, through the first years of management by NBC, 1926-1927. The WJZ logs are especially valuable for their indication of hook-ups with other stations, problems with the use of ASCAP music, and the nature of early program sponsorship. The WJY logs cover the period from May 1923 to April 1926. Also part of this section of the general files is audience mail for two 1930 programs: The Radio Guild and An Hour with Shakespeare.
