Papers, mainly 1945-1948, of a manager, later director of television operations, together with some files pertaining to work beginning in 1948 as executive assistant to Sidney Strotz, vice-president in change of television. Madden, Edward D. (1906-). Papers, 1950-1953
Physical Description: 7 Boxes (7.0 cubic feet)
Scope and Content Note

Papers of an executive vice-president, consisting of memoranda, reports, financial data, notes and related material. Madden's biography in Who's Who indicates that he joined NBC in 1950 after serving as executive vice-president and director of the American Newspaper Advertising Network. At NBC his title was vice-president in charge of TV sales and operations from 1950 to 1952.. From 1952 to 1953 he was staff vice-president in charge of public relations. From 1953 to 1956, when he left NBC, he was general manager of motion pictures for television.

The papers are divided into four categories: AGENCIES, SPONSORS, PROGRAMS, and SUBJECT FILES, and then arranged alphabetically. They best document the relationship between NBC and various sponsors of its programming, the sale of advertising, research on ratings, and the impact of television on the consumer. In addition, special files deal with NBC's public relations, the company's production facilities, and the FCC. Most notable are the research files documenting the early attempts of NBC to rate its effectiveness, the impact of television on consumer habits, sports, and the effect of violence on the viewing public. There are also detailed files on the sales force and the workings of this department and the political conventions of 1952. Other significant materials concern the relationship between sponsors and NBC, most notably Broadway Open House (sponsored by Anchor Hocking Glass), the Colgate Comedy Hour (sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive), Dragnet, Four Star Review, Hopalong Cassidy, (sponsored by General Foods), The Kate Smith Show, Kukla, Fran, and Ollie, and Your Show of Shows.

As an executive vice-president working directly under the president, Madden was a touchstone for a great variety of business. As a result the files cover a broad spectrum of NBC activities from summer programming to talent procurement. Among Madden's correspondents are David Sarnoff, Joseph V. McConnell, Sylvester L. Weaver Jr., William Brooks and Thomas B. McFadden.

Scope and Content Note

Papers, mainly 1948-1950, of a NBC executive who was director of television operations. Included is extensive information on film acquisition, programming, union contracts, budgeting and rates, relations with affiliates, advertising and promotion, television research, and space and production facilities. Although Smith did not have oversight responsibility for program production the section includes extensive files on Howdy Doody, Hopalong Cassidy, Kate Smith, Kukla, Fran and Ollie, Robert Montgomery, Your Lucky Strikes Hit Parade, as well as sports and broadcasting of the 1948 political conventions.

In 1950 Smith was promoted to the position of vice-president in charge of station relations.

Physical Description: 4 boxes (2.6 cubic feet)
Scope and Content Note: Papers of a vice-president in charge of program sales, who prior to September 1953 held that same title and overall responsibility with respect to the television program department; both responsibilities are well reflected in the papers. Arranged alphabetically as SUBJECT FILES, DEPARTMENTAL FILES, and PROGRAM FILES, the section contains data on the development of programming ideas for such shows as Colgate Comedy Hour, Glamour Girl, Hallmark Hall of Fame, Kate Smith, and Today and on the sale of programs to advertisers. Within the files are correspondence, reports, memos, program presentations, financial and ratings data, and a few scripts. There is some correspondence with such NBC executives as John Herbert, Thomas McAvity, and John F. Royal and such performers as Gertrude Berg, Eddie Cantor, Hume Cronyn, Ralph Edward, Arthur Murray, Sir Laurence Oliver, Ezio Pinza, and Dinah Shore. Of particular interest are the department's program monitoring reports, negotiations with playwright Robert Sherwood, and arrangements for coverage of the coronation of Elizabeth II. There is also a letter from John F. Kennedy (Box 368, Folder 26).

Chotzinoff, Samuel (1889-1964). Papers, 1941-1953
Physical Description: 3 boxes (1.0 cubic foot)
Scope and Content Note

Papers of a general music director, consisting largely of correspondence, reports, memoranda, financial material, and minutes. Though Chotzinoff's responsibility was originally part of the radio network, coverage of this is only sketchily represented here except for material pertaining to NBC Symphony of the Air. Beginning in the late 1940s Chotzinoff assumed increasing responsibilities for televised symphonic music and during the 1950s his position was shifted to the program department of the Television Network.

The greatest amount of material on his television work refers to the production of NBC Television Opera Theatre. Also of interest is correspondence referring to his responsibility for RCA classical recordings and files of correspondence to and from Malcolm Sargent and Walter Toscanini (with regard to his father). Other prominent correspondents include Rudolf Bing, Duke Ellington, Kirsten Flagstad, Sol Hurok, Eric Leinsdorf, and Eugene Ormandy. Also in the papers are program board minutes, both for radio and television, and teaching aids for NBC University of the Air.

Fuller, Sam C. Papers, 1950-1956
Physical Description: 3 boxes (1.6 cubic feet)
Scope and Content Note: Papers of a television national program director. The files have been divided into two alphabetically-arranged groups: SUBJECT FILES and PROGRAM FILES, with the bulk of the papers dating from 1954 and 1955. Though fragmentary, the files evidence Fuller's activities in all facets of programming. These duties included development of ideas and personalities for new programs; coordination of producers, directors, and talents, scheduling programs and commercials; and approval of budgets. The files consist primarily of memos and teletype messages routed to Fuller, though few are directly to or from him. Many of the memos, especially those in the program files, are routine and deal with option renewals, guest appearances, and budgets. There are, however, significant files for Colgate Comedy Hour, an “Honor Legion” pilot, and the Imogene Coca Show. Among the NBC executives that appear in the files are Thomas McAvity, Richard Pinkham, and Fred Wile.

Rayel, John Papers, 1952-1953
Physical Description: 1 box (1.0 cubic foot)
Scope and Content Note: Papers of a manager of television network programs who was also supervisor of program procurement during the period herein documented. Both small in bulk and less useful than the papers of Michael Dann whom Rayel preceded as program manager (and from whose papers Rayel's were extracted), the collection consists of alphabetically-arranged SUBJECT FILES and PROGRAM FILES. The program files contain material arranged by title for accepted and rejected program proposals. Generally the files concern the creative aspect of television programming - the review of new ideas submitted by NBC staff and by outside producers such as Worthington Miner and the development of programs accepted for broadcast such as Your Show of Shows. Later in his career Rayel became executive producer of Producers' Showcase, some documentation for which may be found in the papers of Michael Dann.

Wolff, Nat. Papers, 1956
Physical Description: 2 boxes (1.4 cubic feet)
Scope and Content Note: Papers of a director of network program planning. Although Wolff performed regular staff duties, his major responsibility was creative -- developing programs, personalities, and writers for new shows -- and directing a group of writers in Hollywood (Peter Barnum, Elliott Lewis, and Milt Josefsberg), Wolff was also responsible for improving communications between New York management and Hollywood production and seeing that funds were well spent for experimentation and development. Though incomplete, the files document most of these activities. They have been divided into two alphabetically-arranged groups: SUBJECT FILES and PROGRAM FILES. The first contains correspondence, both internal memos and outgoing letters; the second contains pilot scripts and program proposals, many with accompanying memos describing problems and suggestions. There are especially significant files on “The Autobiography of Myrtle Mooney,” The George Sanders Myster Theatre, and on Esther Williams. Among the NBC executives represented in Wolff's files are Frank Cleaver, Sam Fuller, Thomas McAvity, Richard Pinkham, Sylvester L. Weaver Jr., Mort Werner, and Fred Wile.

Sales, 1944-1957
Physical Description: 20 boxes (12.2 cubic feet)
Scope and Content Note: Sales includes: Matthew J. Culligan Papers; George H. Frey Papers; John K. Herbert Papers; Reynold B. Kraft Papers; Lewis W. Marcy Papers; Salesmen's Files; Walter D. Scott Papers.
Culligan, Matthew J. (1918-). Papers, 1955
Physical Description: 3 boxes (1.8 cubic feet)
Scope and Content Note: Papers of a sales manager of the television network. As a subordinate of George H. Frey during 1955, Culligan's responsibilities generally reflected the creative aspect of sales and the development of new business. Like the papers of other television salespeople, Culligan's papers are divided into four alphabetical categories: SUBJECT FILES, DEPARTMENTAL FILES, PROGRAM FILES, and ADVERTISERS FILES. The subject files contain correspondence, memoranda, and reports pertaining to promotional campaigns such as Today-Home-Tonight, sales presentations to various prospective customers, and other topics. The departmental files contain information on the interpretive, creative, and regional subdivision of television sales such as children's program sales, sports program sales, sales development, and the central and western regions sales divisions, but less documentation pertaining to his superiors or to other departments in the NBC organization. An important exception is the material on the joint sales-program department meetings which may be found with the subject files. Some information on programs such as Home, NBC Matinee Theatre, and the network's coverage of the 1956 election are in this section. Although the majority of such material is located in the program files, additional information may be found in the advertisers files under the name of the client.

Frey, George H. (-1965). Papers, 1951-1956
Physical Description: 3 boxes (1.8 cubic feet)
Scope and Content Note: Papers of a vice-president and director of television network sales. Although the papers span the period 1951-1956, material relating to 1952-1954 is limited and, in general, the papers tend to be more routine than those of John K. Herbert to whom Frey reported. The material divides into three alphabetically groups: DEPARTMENTAL FILES, SUBJECT FILES, AND ADVERTISERS FILES. Departmental files document Frey's dealings with members of the NBC sales staff such as Herbert, Matthew J. Culligan, and various salesman, and with the Chicago and Hollywood offices. Advertisers files, which form the bulk of the papers, consist of correspondence with various advertisers and agencies pertaining to the sponsorship of various network television programs. Within the subject files is a small quanity of correspondence and memoranda arranged by program title.

Herbert, John K. (1903-). Papers, 1953
Physical Description: 3 boxes (3.0 cubic feet)
Scope and Content Note

Papers of a vice-president and member of the board of directors of NBC. During 1953, a year of great importance to the company, Herbert was vice-president in charge of the radio and television networks, vice-president in charge of television, and vice-president in charge of television network sales. Despite the high responsibility reflected by these titles, only his general supervision of television and radio sales, which continued throughout 1953, is reflected here. Responsibility as director are only slightly reflected in the RCA and David Sarnoff correspondence files.

The papers are arranged alphabetically into DEPARTMENTAL, PROGRAM, SUBJECT, and ADVERTISERS FILES. Unfortunately the T-Z folders are missing, which eliminates potentially important material from Sylvester L. Weaver Jr., Frank White, and Davidson Taylor. Nevertheless, one will find several kinds of detailed and informative sales and research reports and information on programming and the introduction of color broadcasting. Within the program and advertising files are correspondence, memos, and sales promotion brochures for such programs as The Bob Hope Show, Colgate Comedy Hour, Ding Dong School, Home, and The Kate Smith Show.

Salesmen's Files, 1944-1951
Physical Description: 3 boxes (2.4 cubic feet)
Scope and Content Note: Merged files of the television network sales staff, 1944-1951. The alphabetically-arranged files include material which is chiefly arranged by client or advertising agency. When necessary within the clients files, the material is further subdivided by sales representative and by program. Included are folders pertaining to Reynold Kraft, Walter Scott, and other sales representatives and to such programs as The Aldrich Family; Americana; Break the Bank; Camel News Caravan; Kukla, Fran, and Ollie; and The Voice of Firestone. The individual folders contain correspondence, promotional material, representative's reports, and other material relating to network television advertising. Under the category “politicals” are extensive advertising on political advertising from 1944 to 1950. Because the sales department at one time embraced both television and radio, some of the files in this section contain incidental reference to radio sales.

Scott, Walter D. (1915-). Papers, 1954-1955
Physical Description: 3 boxes (1.0 cubic foot)
Scope and Content Note: Papers of a longtime NBC sales representative and executive (1938-1974). Documented here is Scott's tenure as administrative manager of television sales. Late in 1955 he received a promotion to vice-president in charge of television sales, but the majority of the papers consist of routine correspondence principally relating to his follow-up of administrative sales matters for George H. Frey. The papers are small in volume and divide into SUBJECT FILES and ADVERTISERS FILES, both of which are arranged alphabetically. In 1959 Scott became executive vice-president, in 1965 was elected president of NBC, and in the following year elected chairman of the board.
