Eduard Frankl World War I Photographs Collected by Hermann Schultz, 1914-1916

Biography/History

Eduard Frankl was a press photographer who lived and worked in Berlin, Germany. Frankl's date and place of birth are unknown; however, he began working in 1904 as a press photographer in Berlin. Part of his business included selling newsworthy and interesting images to illustrated magazines. His home and business were located in the Friedenau section of Berlin at Schmargendorfer Strasse 17.

After the end of the World War in 1918, Frankl brought his son Alfred (1898-1955) into the business, known as A. & E. Frankl, Bilderichterstaetter (press journalists). They worked together until Eduard's death in Berlin, 1927. The broad-ranging image archive that he had created went to Alfred who may have unsuccessfully attempted to sell it to the publishing company August Scherl Verlag in 1933. Alfred moved to Bavaria in 1938 and continued work there as a photographer. After Alfred's death, portions of his collected work, as well as his father's, were given to the German State Archives and the German History Museum, circa 1958.
