The Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics was created after a reorganization that
occurred in May 1996. The merger established one single department focused on teaching the
non-romance languages at UW-Milwaukee. At this time five departments merged and the
individual departments became known as programs: Classics, Hebrew Studies, German,
Linguistics, and Slavic Languages. Separate collections exist for each of these predecessor
departments. A more complete administrative history is available in the corresponding
finding aids for these collections.
