Abstract:

This collection consists of the records created or compiled by either the Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics or one of its five predecessor departments. Records include correspondence, meeting minutes, planning documents, and reports of yearly academic activities. The majority of the records were created by the Department of German; however, the Departments of Classics, Linguistics, Slavic Languages, and Hebrew Studies are represented within the collection, as well. In addition, there is a significant amount of material pertaining to the Master of Arts in Foreign Languages and Literature (MAFLL) program and the Polish Studies Committee.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics was created after a reorganization that occurred in May 1996. The merger established one single department focused on teaching the non-romance languages at UW-Milwaukee. At this time five departments merged and the individual departments became known as programs: Classics, Hebrew Studies, German, Linguistics, and Slavic Languages. Separate collections exist for each of these predecessor departments. A more complete administrative history is available in the corresponding finding aids for these collections.

The executive committee minutes in box 3 are restricted in accordance with UWM Personnel File Policy S-42. Access is regulated by Section III.A.2 and III.A.3.

There are no access restrictions on all other materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with Wis. Stat. 19.31.

Use Restrictions

The researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel, privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin Statutes 19.21-19.39).

Acquisition Information

The Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics transferred the collection in two parts (accessions 1997-042 and 1999-021) in 1998 and 1999. The department transferred an additional accession (2001-020) in 2001. Michael Mikos from the Polish Studies Committee donated accession 2021-007 in 2021.

Processing Information

Jenny Juno processed accessions 1997-042 and 1999-021 at the Archives in November 2007 (Brad Houston supervised). Brad Houston processed accession 2001-020 in 2008. Laura K. N. Jones processed accession 2021-007 on December 16th, 2022. Laura K. N. Jones integrated folders into accession 2021-007 on April 11th, 2023.
