Abstract: Documents cover the work of the American Ethnic Studies Coordinating Committee (AESCC) from 1976-1986, and the establishment of the Institute on Race and Ethnicity (IRE) in 1987 and its functions. The collection consists primarily of IRE funded grant final reports and correspondence, and also committee minutes, internal and external evaluations of the Institute, and correspondence concerning conferences, seminars, and publications.

Abstract: Records of the Center for Community Economic Development, which had a mission of serving educational needs of low- and moderate- income people, racial and ethnic minorities, and non-traditional students. The records document the center's participation in a variety of programs, including Goals 2000, Harambee Development Corporation, Small is Beautiful Inc., Globescope 2000, and the Sherman Park Community Association. The files provide details on methods of instruction, housing and solar research, extended education, and community service. Center Directors Dan Folkman and Belden Paulson created most of the records, and interfiled their personal research and teaching records with official center records. The collection also contains extensive documentation of the research and teaching by center faculty members Claire Halverson, Reuben Harpole and Eugene Thuot.

Abstract: The Department of Governmental Affairs was created to investigate problems related to metropolitan areas. Included in the collection are annual reports, correspondence, conference proceedings, research projects, photographs, and audio cassette tapes covering politics in the urban environment. Most of the records are from the late 1960s through the 1970s. The audio cassettes consist of interviews conducted around 1980 with leaders of Milwaukee's business, political, and cultural communities, referred to within the interviews as "community knowledgables." Each interviewee was asked the same questions concerning various challenges that the greater Milwaukee community would facing during the 1980s.

Abstract: Collection contains records of the University of Wisconsin-Extension in Milwaukee from its establishment in 1907 to the reorganization of extension activities in the mid-1970s. Also minimal records dating back to 1896 when some courses already were being offered in Milwaukee by the University of Wisconsin and some records after the reorganization into the mid-1980s. This collection's records are most complete from the 1940s through the early 1970s. The records include the extension's annual reports from 1920 to 1978 with gaps from 1946-1956 and 1964-1977. Other significant extension records include bulletins and catalogs, publications, class schedules (1931-1959), commencement records, various committee minutes and correspondence, enrollment reports and statistics (1920-1956), faculty meeting minutes and directories, scrapbooks (1929-1956), various subject files and some student organization records. Correspondence and subject files from the extension departments of commerce, education, nursing and social work are also included. Center and institute records contained in the collection are the Center for Advanced Study in Organization Science which includes the director's correspondence from 1958-1963, Center for Community Leadership Development, Center for Consumer Affairs, and the Management Institute. Also included are the records for the School for Workers from 1958 to 1963. The administrative and statistical records from the Office of Continuing Education, evening division and summer session are included, as well.

Abstract: Records of a campus-wide committee that directed the development of new and existing instructional units, programs, courses, and curricular matters. The collection contains correspondence, minutes, and inter-departmental memos documenting new course proposals, the creation of new departments, and changes in course descriptions. Records prior to the formation of UW-Milwaukee in 1956 consist of general reports and recommendations on curricula for the Milwaukee State Teacher's College and the Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee. Of particular interest are the audits and reviews of various colleges, schools, and departments within the university and the Ten-Year Plan (1974-1984) which was intended to guide UWM into the future. In later materials, one can also see attempts to bring academic programs in line with the "Milwaukee Idea."

Includes curriculum committee minutes and newsletters containing announcements, reports, and information concerning course and curriculum developments. Correspondence files contain correspondence of Frank P. Besag, director of the Teacher Corps for Corrections, documenting the development of the Teacher Corps Program. The collection also includes files of the Local Education Agency (LEA), which administered the Advocate Education Program--Teacher Corps for Corrections. These records largely consist of minutes documenting staffing, budget, and other administrative matters of concern. Other materials document the development and evaluations of the Teacher Corps program.

Abstract: Records of the athletic director of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and its predecessor institutions, mostly dating from the 1970s. The collection contains numerous files on men's intercollegiate sports, especially basketball, football, and swimming, which include media guides, programs, schedules, rosters, statistics, and lists of records set during athletic competitions dating from 1895. The collection contains 334 movie film reels and videocassette tapes, almost entirely of football games, dating from the 1940s to the 1970s. A few reels exist for basketball games and swimming meets. Other records document awards banquets and recipients of awards; club sports which were sponsored by the university but did not receive any university funding; the physical education program; and the building and maintenance of university athletic facilities, including the J. Martin Klotsche Center for Physical Education. Records concerning intramural sports include athletic records, rules, schedules, and statistics. The correspondence files document a wide variety of subjects such as intercollegiate athletics, physical education, student services, women's athletics, and university athletic facilities. Some records concern the efforts of UWM and other universities in the 1960s and 1970s to create an urban university conference, and include the proposed constitution and operating code; and materials on UWM's violations of NCAA basketball rules during the 1975 season.

Minutes, annual reports, correspondence, and research reports identify issues that the board studied, such as recruitment and retention of minority students, collective bargaining, and relations with the students, the public, and the business community. The records also contain information regarding the creation of the Board of Visitors, the nomination of members, biographies of board members, and bylaws.

Abstract: The collection contains blueprints of University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) and University Extension buildings and other structures, most dating from the 1960s through the 1970s. The blueprints were acquired from a variety of sources, and are use copies, not the official records of any UWM office. It is not known if the blueprints are the final use copy, or earlier renditions in the design process. The blueprints, which average about 2' x 3' in size, contain details on floor plans, elevations, sections and site plans. The number of sheets per roll vary from 1 to 89, averaging about 25 sheets.

Abstract: Collection contains records of various campus-wide committees from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and its predecessor institutions. The files document staffing, budgeting, technological advancements, social issues, public programming, student concerns, curriculum development, planning and development and the legal issues of the University. Some files contain correspondence, minutes, planning documents, memorandums, annual reports, brochures, publications, surveys and by-laws. The most extensive files exist for Academic Staff Committee, American Revolution Bicentennial Committee, Legislative University Advisory Housing Committee, Nominations and Elections Committee, Student Life and Interests Committee, and Title IX Task Force. Files also exist for a number of committees concerning recruitment and retention of African Americans, women, and other minority staff and students. The collection does not contain records of the Academic Planning and Curriculum Committee, Physical Environment Committee, or the Faculty Senate. Files of departmental or division-level committees are included in the records of the administrative unit.

Abstract: The collection primarily documents the development of the Center's seminars, conferences, and lecture series, and the invitation of scholars, authors, and artists, such as Thomas J. Abercrombie, Celia Bertin, Anthony Burgess, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Judith Halberstam, and June Wayne. The collection consists of correspondence between the director and scholars, authors, and artists about lectures and conferences sponsored by the center; brochures and announcements of Center events; photographs; committee meeting minutes; transcripts of lectures delivered at conferences; and the center's Newsletter. Much of the collection documents the role and scholarship of women in the arts in the twentieth century. Working Papers, a series of works-in-progress published by the center, documents the research and pre-publication of scholarship by the center's fellows. A significant amount of the correspondence is in French, most dealing with "A Week with French Women" and other lectures and visits given by foreign artists and authors. Very little of the collection documents the creation and establishment of the center.

Abstract: Collection consists of miscellaneous records of the center, mostly dating from the 1970s. The correspondence files include letters to and from UWM administrators concerning the center, including the Dean of the College of Letters & Science Joseph G. Baier and Director Clifford H. Mortimer. The correspondence files document concerns over funding; the purchase of a research facility for the center; staffing, including the efforts to attract Mortimer to head the center; and research projects. Also contains some files on the Council for Marine Studies, which directed marine research at the UW campuses; the acquisition and conversion of the Research Vessel (R/V) Neeskay, including photographs of its launching; proposals and requests for additional support for the Sea Grant Program from the National Science Foundation; and the proceedings of the 1973 Conference on Port Planning and Development as Related to Problems of U.S. Ports and the U.S. Coastal Environment. About half of the collection consists of publications issued by the Center, most dating from the 1970s.

Abstract: The UWM Center for International Education, formerly the Office of International Studies and Programs, was formed in 1957 to oversee, coordinate, and encourage all forms of international activity at UWM, and also coordinate numerous exchange programs for undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty. Records from 1965 to 1970 deal primarily with UWM connections to Brazil, Venezuela, and other South American countries. Several conferences are also documented in the records, and include audio tapes of a 1964 Peace Corps conference held at Wingspread in Racine, Wisconsin. The collection contains numerous directories of faculty with international interests and connections, and a 39 tape lesson series from the Oral Brazilian Portuguese Language Project. The majority of the records from 1982 to 2014 consist of newsletters and brochures. Electronic records include publicity materials for the Center's programs, documentation of the development of the international studies major, and subject files related to the administration of UWM's Model UN program.

Abstract: This collection contains the records of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Center for Urban Community Development (CUCD). These records were created largely by founder Belden Paulson, during his years as the chair of the CUCD. The CUCD focused on educational programs that were four-fold: energy education, equal education opportunity, neighborhood community development, and futures studies. The Center for Urban Community Development records are particularly strong regarding community development and education. This collection is comprised of a variety of documentation, such as administrative documents, correspondence, program and project files, seminar files, conference files, and publications and pamphlets.

Hinsvark (1967-1975), Mary E. Conway (1976-1980), Louise C. Smith (Acting, 1975-1976), Norma M. Lang (1980-1992), Mary Mundt (Acting, 1993-1994), Sharon Hoffman (1994-1999), Sally Lundeen (1999-2016), and Kim Litwack (2016-). Most of the records date from 1968 to the late 1990's; the small number of records predating 1967 are from the Milwaukee School of Nursing, which was a division of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Nursing. The records document the funding, accreditation, and development of the College of Nursing, the Instructional Media Program, the Nurse Utilization Project, and the College's Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects. There are numerous files on Milwaukee-area clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, and Planned Parenthood because the school conducted classes and placed interns in the organizations. The records document the meetings between officials of the organizations and the school, the information presented at the classes, and the use of school interns. Also well documented is the development of courses taught within the school, although much of the information on individual courses is scattered throughout the collection. Records dealing with the relationship between UW-Parkside and the UW-Milwaukee College of Nursing are also included, documenting the beginnings of the model cooperative program, started in 1981, that allowed students to earn a nursing degree through UW-Milwaukee by taking courses at UW-Parkside. Abstract: Records, mostly dating from the 1960s and 1970s, containing correspondence, and faculty and departmental meeting minutes concerning staffing, equipment and space needs, and curriculum development. The collection also contains minutes of the Ad Hoc Committee on Urban Geography, which studied the courses offered in urban geography and the department's possible cooperation with other UWM departments in their urban projects. Reports and correspondence in the graduate program files document the department's attempts to establish a masters program and a doctoral program at UWM. The collection contains some reports about the federally funded NDEA Institute for Advanced Study in Geography, which introduced field geography to teachers of geography in grades 4-12. The Institute was held on UWM's campus and directed by UWM faculty and staff. The only item predating 1955 is Louise W. Mears' 1923 pamphlet, "Around Milwaukee" : Land and Lake as a Laboratory, written while she was a geography teacher at the State Normal School in Milwaukee.

UWM Chancellor Werner Baum and Mayor Henry Maier initiated The Goals for Greater Milwaukee 2000 (1982) project to analyze the contemporary and future strengths and problems of Milwaukee. The collection contains the project's correspondence, publicity file, and eleven oral history interviews. Urbanism Past & Present (1973-1986) was a periodical sponsored by the Department of History, which ceased in 1985. Included within the collection are records created by Chairmen Herman Kluge and Ward K. Gates. One file contains correspondence of the department's chairperson documenting the changes in staffing, space needs, and the curriculum. The largest part of the collection is the masters degree program files (1965-1979) which contain proposals and materials documenting the development of a Master of Science in physical education/human kinetics. The collection also contains policies regarding the physical education program, requirements, and reports of the program for teachers. Also included are proposals for offering a major in women's physical education and a major in men's physical education. Several files in the collection document the planning and administration of the J. Martin Klotsche Center, the physical education building completed in 1977. The files contain correspondence with Michael J. Stolee, dean of the School of Education, regarding the administration and use of the facility. Also included are miscellaneous brochures and an annual report (1977-1978) of the center. Several files relate to the department's 1976 name change from Physical Education to Physical Education, Recreation and Health Education, as well as materials relating to the department's transfer to the School of Allied Health Professions in 1979.

Abstract: The collection contains miscellaneous blueprints, correspondence, meeting minutes, and remodeling and progress reports from the director of Facilities Planning and Management and its predecessors. Although the records document the construction and remodeling of many buildings on the UWM campus, the best documented are the Downer buildings, Golda Meir Library, Great Lakes Research Facility, the Fine Arts Center, Lapham Hall, and the Student Union. The collection contains numerous progress reports which provide overviews of activities, and the correspondence documents problems with construction and contractors. Pre-1963 records were compiled by the director from a variety of sources. Abstract: Records created by the Institute for Urban Health Partnerships, a research institute of the UWM School of Nursing. The Institute's mission was to provide educational and clinical services to disadvantaged residents of the city of Milwaukee and the surrounding communities, and to offer learning opportunities for students enrolled in the nursing program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Most of the collection consists of grant proposals and correspondence between the Institute and granting agencies, including the Milwaukee chapter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Milwaukee Public Schools, Milwaukee Health Department, the United Way, and the Wisconsin Area Health Education Center. Of particular interest are the participant interviews and surveys, and evaluations of programs that focused on parenting, teenage pregnancy, women's health, and adolescent female empowerment. The majority of the records date from the 1960s to the early 2000s. The records document the accreditation process, committee business, newsletters, community ties, curriculum development and daily affairs of the School. The collection contains correspondence of Deans H. F. Klingman (1963-1966), C. Edward Weber (1966-1976), Eric Schenker (1976-1997), Charles O. Kroncke (1997-2001), and V. Kanti Prasad (2001-2009) concerning curriculum development, funding, and staffing. American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business files document the School of Business Administration's accreditation proceedings, and the role of this accrediting body. Abstract: Collection consists of official records largely created by Colonel Samuel D. Stroman, a professor of military science, and Norman P. Lasca, a professor who served as director of the military education program. Most date from 1967 to 1972. The records document the evolution of ROTC courses at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), including Curriculum "C," an experimental set of courses taught by faculty from other UWM departments. Also includes files documenting the department's efforts to improve its funding and physical plant, contracts with the Army and other local campuses, efforts to reverse declines in ROTC membership, and continued concerns about the administrative control of ROTC within UWM. There is little mention of the Vietnam War or protests against ROTC. Also includes records of the ROTC Committee and the Ad Hoc Committee on ROTC Organization and Structure. The only records predating UWM's establishment in 1956 are a certificate of award from the Army Air Force to the Wisconsin State Teacher's College and a program for a student stage production, both dating to World War II.

The interviews provide information on various perspectives of changes, dating from the 1920s through the 1980s, on the administration of the schools; modernization of the curriculum; the Milwaukee Teachers' Education Association; student attitudes, discipline, and social life; parental involvement; race relations, especially for African American teachers; and public support for education. The project allowed nursing students to take classes at UWM while still enrolled in Columbia's nursing program. The records document the contract between UWM and Columbia Hospital, admissions criteria, course equivalencies, correspondence between students and faculty, prerequisites for science courses, and recruitment drive activities. The remainder of the collection documents the Shorewood High School Project, a joint program of the UWM Mathematics Department and Shorewood High School, and administered by the associate dean. The project taught university level mathematics courses at the high school level. The collection contains records from Chancellors J. Abstract: Collection contains records of the Dean of Students from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) and its predecessor institutions. The collection also contains records from the UWM Office of Student Life and from the UWM Student Organization Advising and Resources (SOAR) office. Most of the records date from the 1960-1982; the materials predating 1960 concern fraternities and sororities. The collection largely consists of files of UWM student organizations, including fraternities and sororities, student government, and a wide variety of ethnic, political, professional, religious, and social groups. Most of the files contain only a charter application form and a group registration form, which lists the name and function of the group, its off-campus affiliation, meeting location, names and addresses of officers, and faculty advisor. Some files contain officer change reports, a constitution and by-laws, correspondence, newsclippings, photographs, and publicity materials. The most extensive files exist for campus fraternities and sororities, and Vietnam-era protest groups. Files also exist for a number of student groups for African Americans, Hispanics, and women. The most recent addition to the collection consists of a large number of files related to the Student Association and disciplinary issues with some of its members and officers. Also included are subject files dealing with official policies of the Office of Student Life, such as on on-campus protests, as well as dealing with campus issues such as racism and student stress.

Abstract: Collection contains audio cassettes and some transcripts of the project, in which interviewees described the origin, location, and development in the early years of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). The interviews, conducted by Frederick I. Olson, Frank Cassell, and J. Martin Klotsche, were part of UWM's 25th anniversary celebration. The interviewees were officials of UWM, the UW System, and local and state government, and include Ralph Aderman, Joseph Baier, Ira Baldwin, Harry Franke, Fred Harrington, Klotsche, Henry Maier, Clifford Smith, Olson, and Frank Zeidler. Most of the interviews focus on efforts in the State legislature and UW Board of Regents to merge the Wisconsin State Teachers College, Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Extension Division. Other topics include the development of UWM's Colleges and Schools, UWM's independence from UW-Madison, and the 1970 student strike. Seven of the interviews were conducted in 1984 by students in an Applied History course. There are transcripts only for the Baier, Baldwin, Franke, Harrington, Klotsche, and Zeidler interviews.

The federal government assigned numbers to projects to distinguish between grants issued to universities participating in the Peace Corps. Project records typically contain a bibliography of materials for trainees; bulletins of general information for trainees; correspondence from various project and training directors to university staff and volunteers regarding training, functions and progress of programs; instructions for trainees; news releases; a project reports; training program rosters; program syllabi and schedules of events; and information on volunteer support, graduation, medical concerns, technical training, and travel. The Brazil general files include six audio reel tapes of instructional material and interviews of Peace Corps volunteers and staff. Also included are general files relating to the projects and Peace Corps activities in other countries, general correspondence files dating from 1960 to 1968 and statements of Peace Corps policy. Material predating 1963 regards the establishment of the first training projects at UWM. Abstract: Collection contains the records of the Secretary of the University for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The records include correspondence and memos; general committee information; and information pertaining to the general services of the campus, such as telephone and mail service. The collection contains copies of deeds to several UWM properties, including the deeds to Engelmann Hall, Purin Hall, and the sight of Mitchell Hall. The records also contain a survey regarding campus space, information on the properties UWM rented, and the allotment of space. More recent accessions contain materials relating to Senate Faculty meetings (minutes, agendas, documents) from 1956-2003, miscellaneous correspondence, policy development for UWM faculty and staff, and background information on award recipients (Spaights Plaza awards and honorary degrees). Abstract: Records of the assistant chancellor's office, and its predecessors, the Dean of Student Affairs and Assistant Chancellor for Student Services and Special Programs. Most of the records date from 1970-1984. The majority of the collection consists of the files concerning the operations of ad hoc and standing committees, departments and programs within Student Affairs, including Admissions and Records, the Experimental Program in Higher Education, Financial Aid, High School and College Relations, Housing, International Scholars, Learning Skills, Placement and Career Development, Registration and Records, and Student Health. The files contain copies of correspondence, reports, and background materials either created by the assistant chancellor or sent to him from other offices documenting funding, staffing, and program development. The collection contains numerous records concerning the recruitment, retention, and quality of African American student life at UWM, including files on the Advisory Committee on Minority/Disadvantaged Student Life, the Experimental Program in Higher Education, and the Upward Bound Program. A variety of files concerning student housing at UWM document the development of on- and off-campus housing services, residence regulation, and costs of services. Also included in the collection are several files related to the Affirmative Action Advisory and Oversight Committee (AAAOC), the Student Accessibility Center (SAC), the Pre-College Program, and the Division of Student Academic Development. The collection contains a few records of the Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee which predate the creation of Student Affairs in 1956, including files from the Dean of Women and New Student Week. The office served as a liaison for student grievances with the dean of students. Also included are records of the Fee-Tuition Task Force, which the assistant to the assistant chancellor chaired. The Affirmative Action Office is responsible for coordinating UW-Green Bay’s Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity programs, monitoring university compliance with federal and state laws, regulations, and the investigation of discrimination and harassment complaints by students, faculty, and staff. The collection contains documents pertaining to UW-Green Bay's Affirmative Action initiatives. Represented in the collection are records of various committees concerned with Affirmative Action matters and topics. The committees include: Committee on the Status of Minorities (1972-1975), the Equal Opportunity Committee (1974-1977), and the Human Rights Committee. The bulk of the collection consists of annual reports (1973-2016), which contain student and staff profiles and employment data, personnel issues, promotion data, planning and committee reports, and policy statements.
