The letters document personal and day-to-day activities of the correspondents, including the Fargo family participation in local dairy farming, and the Mears family operation of a local flour mill.

Abstract: Interviews with 20 former and current retail food employees and union representatives concerning such topics as customer relations, productivity, small-scale grocery operation, changes in meat cutting, employee-management relations, unionization, male-female working relationships, and the role of women in the retail food industry. Also included are edited transcripts. The interviews were conducted with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities by Jim Cavanaugh and Michael Gordon for the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Interviewees are Robert Akamatsu, Harold Breithaupt, Kenneth Doherty, Henry Dubinski, Frederick Gartzke, Paul Hampel, Conchera Hannon, Ethel Henning, Robert Heslip, Mary Kazmer, Alice Kohn, Walter McMahon, John Puent, Faye Roidt, Mildred Shindel, Walter Stoklosa, Raymond Toelle, Paul Whiteside, June Wuthrich, and Charles Zalesak. These workers were members of either the Retail Clerks International Union or the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America.

Abstract: Records of a Medford, Wis., cooperative incorporated for the purpose of manufacturing butter, powdered dried milk, and other milk products, which merged with Consolidated Badger Cooperative, Shawano, in 1962. The collection includes annual reports to the Secretary of State, annual financial reports, articles of incorporation, by-laws, minutes, tax records, a few land and legal records, and daybooks recording amounts paid for milk and cream to individual members. There are very few letters, personnel records, or production records.

Abstract: Subject files of the San Francisco Chapter of MCHR, an organization dedicated to providing quality health care in the community. The records reveal the Committee's interest in free clinics; community control of health institutions; drug abuse programs; occupational safety and health; and the health needs of women, prisoners, and minorities. MCHR has also been active in anti-Vietnam war work and in promotion of a national health care plan. The subject files consist of printed material and newspaper clippings, but few organizational records are present.

Abstract: This collection contains correspondence (especially with national and international scholars), letters of recommendation, conference plans and materials, and grant applications (including those to NASA, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation) connected to Medical Physics Department Chair John Cameron from the early 1970s to 1991. Cameron's grant proposals and research papers focus on neutron collimation, ion dosimetry, and radiotherapy. This collection also includes the correspondence of Medical Physics Department Chair Herb Attix (1985-1987); enrollment information and course materials related to a short course on Quality Control in Diagnostic Radiology by Professor Melvin Siedband (1974-1980); and the correspondence of Medical Physics Professor P.R. Moran (1979).

Abstract: Research material gathered by August Meier and Elliott Rudwick, two history professors at Kent State University, for their history of the Congress of Racial Equality. From the national CORE offices are photocopies or transcriptions of minutes, proceedings, and reports of meetings of the National Action Council, the steering committee, and CORE's annual convention; financial reports; and copies of revised constitutions. Four reels of microfilm contain records of the Seattle Chapter of CORE, 1961-1969, including extensive files on housing, employment, education, and local conventions and workshops. An additional reel of microfilm contains material from the Bancroft Library consisting of miscellaneous national, California, and other chapter papers and newsletters.

Abstract: Milburn A. “Mel” Gilbertson (1923-1998) worked for the City of La Crosse, Wis., for 35 years, and he retired in 1983 as the supervisor the La Crosse City Water Department. This collection includes some personal papers and labor union materials from the Building and Service Employees International Union, Local 180, and the National Association of Power Engineers, La Crosse #8. The bulk of the collection is made up of papers from the La Crosse City Water Utility and contains correspondence, employee salary lists, and reports including a report on the electrification of the La Crosse Waterworks (1923). Photographs (1912-1961) show the construction of the main pumphouse (1912), the interior of pumphouse, and well flow at La Crosse well #2.

Abstract: Papers of Melvin H. Wunsch, a career officer with the U.S. Social Security Administration (1936-1973), consisting of original documents gathered by Wunsch to illustrate his career and lengthy explanatory notes on agency policy, procedures, and personnel composed by Wunsch between 1973 and 1986. Major topics include the Social Security system; its management, field service, and administration; automation; Medicare; public relations; and staff training and development. Among the notable correspondents are Robert M. Ball and H.L. Mencken, as well as a variety of middle-level federal administrators. A small file of personal papers supplies additional information about Wunsch and illustrates his personal style and political convictions through correspondence with a range of friends and relatives. Also includes photographs and negatives of various subjects, such as: Wunsch's office, vacations, golf outings, and tennis matches.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1946-1973, of Melvin Laird, former Wisconsin state legislator (1947-1953), Seventh District congressman (1953-1969), and U.S. Secretary of Defense (1969-1973) documenting his political career. Also present are brief papers of Melvin R. Laird Sr. (1877-1946), also a Wisconsin legislator, and grandfather William D. Connor (died 1944), a former lieutenant governor and state Republican Party leader. Photographs received with the collection consist primarily of publicity shots of Laird, his family, office visitors, and state and national leaders (including Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard M. Nixon), as well as visual documentation of his interest in military and health care issues.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1928-1954, of a spiritualist minister concerning her activities in a number of spiritualist organizations in Wisconsin. Included are financial ledgers, correspondence, curriculum records, and other materials pertaining to her work from 1928 to 1932 as secretary-treasurer of the Morris Pratt Institute of Whitewater; and a minute book, financial records, annual program books, and photographs (1949) of the Western Wisconsin Camp Association, a summer retreat in Wonewoc for the study of spiritualism which Hostak served as president; and miscellaneous records of other organizations. Correspondence with Anna Wallace concerns the lyceum movement. Also included are correspondence, notes, and drafts of historian Paul Schmunk concerning his research on the Morris Pratt Institute; additional notes about MPI by Hugh W. Swofford III; and general personal correspondence of Hostak. Other photographs include snapshots of Hostak.

Abstract: Papers, mainly 1938-1981, of an award-winning actor pertaining to his stage, screen, and television career and to his many political and humanitarian concerns. Theatrical files range in completeness with the most extensive relating to his performances in The Best Man (1960), First Monday in October (1975), Inherit the Wind (1955), Juno (1959) and Time Out for Ginger (1952), and to his production of Call Me Mister with Herman Levin in 1946. Documentation on these includes correspondence, contracts, clippings and scrapbooks (available only on microfilm), and miscellaneous production information. Material on his early motion picture work is scarce, but there are scripts and related materials for Being There (1979), I Never Sang For My Father (1970), and Tell Me a Riddle (1980), as well as for his television work on “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night” (1967). The collection also includes stills and photographs for many productions in which Douglas appeared. General correspondence, mainly 1938-1950, pertains to Douglas' political activities especially as a member of the Motion Picture Democratic Committee, Americans for Democratic Action, and the American Veterans Committee; work for the White House Conference on Children in a Democracy; and his controversial appointment to the Office of Civil Defense in 1942. There is also material on his military service during World War II. Among the prominent correspondents are Robert W. Anderson, Brooks Atkinson, Ralph Bellamy, Kermit Bloomgarden, Hume Cronyn, Paul H. Douglas, William O. Douglas, Abba Eban, Clark Eichelberger, James T. Abstract: The Memorial Library Educational Film Collection is 62 films, dating from 1951 through 1984, with the bulk of the collection coming from the 1970s. A wide breadth of educational topics are found in the collection. Consistent topics include art, mathematics, ecology, evolution, sociology, and zoology. The collection includes two feature films, Truman Capote's The Glass House from 1972 starring Vic Morrow, Alan Alda, and Billy Dee Williams, and Cat in the Cage from 1978 starring Sybil Danning. Also notable, the collection includes Clay, or the Origin of the Species, a 1965 animated short which was nominated for best “Short Subject (Cartoons)” by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1966. The collection also includes teaching and study guides for six titles.

Abstract: Records of Memorial Union Labor Organization (MULO), an independent labor union which represented part-time student workers and limited term employees (LTEs) at the student unions on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus from 1971-2004. MULO went on strike three times, in 1972, 1976, and 1980. Membership numbers went down shortly after the 1976 strike and did not go up until the spring of 1980. Throughout MULO's history, the organization was very active in the bargaining process, filing grievances, supporting other unions and organizations such as United Farm Workers, and trying to improve working conditions for student and limited term employees. The materials in this collection date from 1971-2004, with the bulk of the records documenting the 1980s and 1990s. Included in the collection are minutes of several committees and the Stewards' Council; correspondence and other administrative records; membership records; graphics, flyers, and posters used for promotional purposes; Collective Bargaining Agreements, 1988-2004; grievances filed by student and limited term employees; files on other labor unions and organizations; and an alphabetical subject file. MULO also published a newsletter which can be found on microfilm in the Wisconsin Historical Society Library.

Background information about the applicant includes age; birthplace; residence; marital status; occupation; nature of illness; patient disposition; prior treatment; habits; injuries; military service; and parents' nationality, religious beliefs, and education. A few miscellaneous records provide information on applicants who were not admitted to the state hospital.

Abstract: Records of the Menominee Tribal News (known as Menominee Nation News in 2008), a Native American newspaper run by the members of the Menominee Nation, including those years when the Menominee had been declared disbanded as a tribe due to the Menominee Termination Act (1954), and later reinstated through the Menominee Restoration Act (1974). The records consist mostly of photographs and negatives, scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, and papers. Many of the files, although they came from the newspaper office, document subjects of broader relevance to the community, including research for the formation of the Menominee County School District, the Menominee Restoration Committee, the Menominee Historical Foundation Inc., and Menominee Enterprises Inc. Photographs document daily life and community events of the Menominee Indians, including pow-wows, hide tanning, sports, and school.

Abstract: Letters, notices, and reports to the City Clerk, City Council, and Mayor from state agencies, city departments, and citizens. Correspondence with the State Board of Health, the Railroad and Public Service Commission, and the Industrial Commission relates to sewer and water system construction, highways, municipal employees, and utility regulation. Material from city departments includes communications from the Police and Fire Commission, appointments to various city offices and boards, and, for the earlier years, applications for relief, materials concerning the city hospital and reports of the municipal judge. Reports of the Fire Insurance Rating Bureau detail the operations of the city water, police, and fire departments. Petitions and letters from individuals, the Chamber of Commerce, churches, unions, and other organizations provide information about ordinances, public improvements, nuisances, conditions of public employment, and similar matters.

Abstract: Miscellaneous financial records of the Menomonie city schools, including the Stout Manual Training Schools. Included are general accounting and early teacher payroll records, building fund records, record of contributions of J.H. Stout to the school fund, and a separate account book for expenditures for manual training, 1891-1901. There is a good deal of material which relates to the financial establishment and continued operation of the Stout Manual Training Schools including cost information for manual training and domestic science operations. Until 1927, the account ledgers include separate account categories for manual training and domestic science. Also included is information regarding expenses incurred from the 1897 fire which destroyed Central School and the Stout Manual Training building.

Abstract: Papers of Merlin Hull, a Wisconsin politician and newspaper editor-publisher, consisting of chronologically-arranged correspondence which relate to his career as assemblyman, 1909-1909; secretary of state, 1917-1921; and congressman, 1929-1931 and 1934-1953; and to his operation of the Jackson County Banner-Journal. A remarkably complete set of business records (1856-1926) relate to the operation of the Banner prior to its consolidation with Hull's Journal. Miscellaneous materials include minutes of the Joint Committee on Finance and the State Board of Public Affairs and political material from Hull's campaigns in 1914 and 1916. Also includes photographs from his political career as well as some family photographs.

Abstract: Papers of Merrick T. Jackson, a public relations specialist who was active in the field of corporate communications for employers such as the Western Electric Company and the Hoover Company and who, as an employee of Hill & Knowlton, edited Steelways magazine for the American Iron and Steel Institute for twenty years. Included are correspondence, clippings, samples of original public relations materials, fiction and non-fiction writings, diary-like engagement calendars covering his retirement, and a lengthy autobiographical memoir. The narrative includes reflections on his career and individuals he knew such as Kenneth F. Cook of Standard Oil and Robert Newcomb with whom he was associated in the establishment of the National Council of Industrial Editors. About his association with Hill & Knowlton there is correspondence, progress reports, public relations audits, recollections of H&K staff, and samples of publications he produced (Steelways is available in the University of Wisconsin Engineering Library.) There are also notes, correspondence, and reports for the public relations audit he conducted for Caltex concerning its investments in Southeast Asia; information on proposals prepared for his own firm, Direct Lines, Inc.; and a run of Hoover Worldwide, which he edited. About his personal life there are reflections about his mother, a single parent, and his first wife who died from cancer; correspondence and writings concerning Lafayette College; and correspondence and a diary concerning his year of teaching (1923-1924) at the American University in Cairo.

Merrill Clark served a four-year term on the inaugural National Organic Standards Board (NOSB, 1992-1996), and chaired its Livestock Committee. The papers offer partial documentation of Clark's tenure on the NOSB, and John and Merrill Clark's subsequent concerns about the standards established by the NOSB.

Abstract: Papers of Merrill Mueller, a prominent journalist best known for his news reporting for the National Broadcasting Company (1944-1968). Included are biographical clippings, photographs, and publicity; fragmentary correspondence primarily concerning the internal operations of NBC and INS (for whom he also reported early in his career); news stories and radio scripts (many of them eyewitness accounts) concerning World War II, the Palestine Crisis (1947), and the NASA program (1961-1974); several drafts of “The Great Crusade,” an unpublished book concerning his experiences as a correspondent during World War II; and other writings. The World War II materials, which are only available on microfilm, include an extensive run of dispatches sent to Newsweek from Northern Africa (1942-1943) and radio scripts for NBC pertaining to his coverage of General Eisenhower's headquarters, 1944-1945, written for NBC and for the World Press Pool whose representative he was at Allied headquarters. Prominent correspondents in the collection include Mark Clark, Dwight Eisenhower, Julian Goodman, Ray Henle, Elmer Lower, and William R. McAndrew. Recordings of several news reports are included with the papers.

Much of the correspondence consists of mimeographed materials from the director of the State Board of Vocational and Adult Education pertaining to policies, meetings of school directors, and curricula. Also included are letters from other officials of the state board, from companies pertaining to school supplies, and from other Wisconsin vocational schools and the University of Wisconsin. Abstract: Papers, mainly 1928-1956, of Merton E. Krug, a Wisconsin historian primarily known for his work on the Upper Baraboo Valley and the trader, John Baptiste DuBay. Included are genealogical materials for the Fish family to which he was related, autobiographical documents, college term papers containing personal information and information on Wisconsin history, research material, and assorted writings including newspaper articles, poems, an address, and an incomplete manuscript and proofs for his research on General William Hull. Of special note is an account book, 1831-1866, detailing the financial activities of farmer-entrepreneur Henry Darrow, a relative who was an early settler of Walworth and Sauk counties, Wisconsin.

Abstract: Papers of the Messerschmidt family, German immigrants and longtime residents of Madison, Wisconsin. William Messerschmidt and his son Samuel owned land near present-day Dane County Airport on which Samuel built a stone house in 1932 that was later purchased and moved during a runway expansion project in 1997-2001. Included in the collection are autobiographies by William and Lowell, Samuel's son. Lowell grew up on the family farm, initially registered as a conscientious objector during World War II, later saw service in an ambulance unit in Africa, the Middle East, and Italy, traveled extensively as a church pastor, and held office for the Madison welfare office in the 1970s. The photographs include shots of a tornado that touched down in Madison (1944), the first Northwest Airlines flight at Truax Field (1937), the Messerschmidt family farm, vacations, a G.A.R. parade in Madison, and Madison churches. The films are home movies featuring family vacations, the farm, a parade in Madison, and various family activities.

Abstract: Business records of a Milwaukee real estate firm operated from about 1892 to 1896 by Willis A. Meyer and Otto A. Finck, consisting of correspondence and ledgers, cash books, journals, and miscellaneous business record books of the company and similar record books of various subsidiary land companies. The correspondence relates to the sale of real estate, agency work for property owners, collections, commissions, land speculation at Trinidad, Colorado, and operations of fifteen subsidiary land companies, such as Milwaukee Central Land Company and Crown Land Company. Several volumes relate to the Phoenix Suspender Company of which Frank was an assignee.

Abstract: The collection is largely made up of photographs depicting the "human chess games," organized by Meyer Fishman after his release from the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen, which entertained fellow Holocaust survivors awaiting resettlement. Other photographs are of Meyers' Food Bulk Store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Also contains negatives of all the prints found in the collection.
