Keenan (1877-1948), a prominent Stoughton, Wisconsin physician, and members of his family. Included are an obstetrical record containing medical information on births he attended (l905-l928); correspondence, diaries, and a scrapbook of his second wife, Martha Willson Keenan, concerning her life as a student perhaps at Stout Institute and as a teacher; correspondence of his son, Walter E. Keenan, concerning work as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, his military service and imprisonment during World War II, and his tour of duty during the U.S. occupation of Japan; and miscellaneous papers of other members of the family. Also included is an unpublished biography of Dr. Keenan by Elizabeth Keenan Coombs. The photographs are pictures taken for the 1943 Look article about Keenan and his small-town medical practice. |

Call Number: WVM Mss 1291 Abstract: Correspondence, military papers, and photographs pertaining to Vilas, Forrest, and Norris Kellman, three brothers from Galesville, Wisconsin who served in the Army during World War I. Vilas was the only brother to be sent overseas and was stationed with the Headquarters Department of the 62nd Field Artillery Brigade. He arrived in France soon after the signing of the Armistice in 1918 and served as part of the occupation force for six months. Forrest and Norris were stationed in the United States during the war. Forrest served as part of the Students' Army Training Corps and was stationed in Indianapolis as a mechanic. Norris was trained as a lieutenant at College Station, Texas, but was never attached to a specific unit. The collection includes military papers, correspondence, a diary, newspaper articles, military ephemeral, photographs, and postcards. Most of the manuscripts are letters written between the three brothers while they were serving in the Army. They also individually corresponded with their parents, Frank and Lizzie, other relatives, and a few neighbors in Galesville. In the letters, the brothers ask questions about the whereabouts of friends who were also serving in the military, how they felt about life in the Army, and engaged in small talk about their family in Galesville. Vilas and Forrest also asked Norris about his training as an officer and congratulated him when he became the youngest lieutenant commissioned in 1918. The letters also convey concern over Vilas being sent overseas. In one letter from Forrest to Norris (August 4, 1918), Forrest expressed his concern over Vilas's well being and instructs Norris to write to Vilas often in order to “keep his sprits up.” In another letter to Norris (November 8, 1918), Forrest writes how he wished he was overseas with Vilas to keep him company. Concern over the Spanish influenza is also a major theme within the letters and is discussed between the brothers, their parents, and their neighbors. Norris and Forrest describe the number of cases at their respective bases and what preventative steps were taken to stop the spread of the disease. Letters from their parents and relatives discuss the severity of influenza outbreaks in Wisconsin and around Galesville. The letters written by Frank and Lizzie mainly discuss life at home and the health of relatives and neighbors. By the end of the war they frequently asked if there was any news about when the brothers would return home. The diary was kept by Vilas and records a few short entries during his time overseas. It also includes some training notes. Other manuscripts include draft registration for all three brothers, military records for Vilas and Norris, and a newspaper article about Norris being commissioned as a lieutenant. Also included are manuscripts pertaining to Norris's attempt to receive a commission in the Army during World War II. These include correspondence with various military departments, Forrest, and his father. There are also some materials pertaining to Norris's active participation in Wisconsin politics as a member of the Republican Party, and his service as Sergeant at Arms for the State Assembly. The still images consist of photographs and postcards collected by the brothers during their service. Photographs include images of all three brothers posing in uniform and a few images taken after the war. Other photographs pertain to Norris and include images of him posing with family members, fellow soldiers, images taken at his graduation and commission, and buildings around College Station. Postcards include those collected by Vilas while in France, Camp Zachary Taylor (Kentucky), and Newport News (Virginia).There is also an interesting collection of postcards showing U. S. Navy battleships, and a series showing sailors on an unidentified Navy warship. |

(4 archives boxes and 1 flat box) and 1 videorecording Call Number: Parkside Mss 84; VCA 257 Abstract: Records of Kemper Center, Inc., a citizen group founded in 1975 to purchase the Kemper Hall property in Kenosha, Wis., which had been an Episcopal girls school until its closing in 1975. The group's goal was to preserve the buildings and to develop a cultural, recreational, and historic center operated and managed by Kemper Center, Inc. under the supervision of the Kenosha County Parks Commission. The records consist of Board of Directors' meeting files (1975-1980) which include minutes, financial information, correspondence, and charter, constitution, and by-laws; annual reports (1987-1999) which include summary reports, Board of Directors reports, strategic planning committee reports, membership information, publicity, and financial information; and master plan reports prepared by area architectural and design firms for Kenosha County Parks Commission and Kemper Center, Inc. Also included is a scrapbook documenting the founding of Kemper Center, Inc. and its efforts to preserve the Kemper Hall property consisting of local news clippings, brochures, photographs, and advertising literature. In the 1990's controversy developed over Kemper Center, Inc.'s management of the property and correspondence (1994-2000) and local news clippings documenting the controversy are also included. In addition, there is one videotape documenting dedication ceremonies for Kemper Center which took place in October of 1977. |

Included are papers concerning several family members as well. Correspondence concerns Tanner's experiences as a student at the University of Wisconsin (1900-1904), as an officer candidate in Kentucky during World War I, and as a Republican Party leader in Eastland in the 1950s. Letters written while managing the Rio Tamasopo Sugar Company plantation owned by his family deal with the problems caused by the Mexican Revolution of 1910 and later political turmoil. Family letters concern health, mutual acquaintances, events in Kaukauna, Wis. where Tanner was born, and experiences of his daughter, Dolores Tanner Vachliotis, while with the Hedgerow Theater in Pennsylvania in the 1940s and 1950s. Also present are genealogies of the Lawe, Boyd, Battles, Ford, and Tanner families; writings by Tanner's father, Herbert Battles Tanner; and information on a distant relative, Father Charles Francis de Vivaldi. |

Included are correspondence and subject files on many issues with which Merkel was prominently involved including opposition to abortion, usurpation of local authority by state government, aid to private schools, taxation, anti-war demonstrations on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, and welfare costs. There are also extensive files pertaining to Merkel's efforts in behalf of fiscal conservatism on the Joint Committee on Finance as well as his work on the Assembly Select Committee on Inner City Problems and the Joint Committee to Visit State Properties. The collection also includes files on a number of initiatives supported by the John Birch Society of which Merkel was a member such as opposition to sex education in public schools and U.S. membership in the United Nations. Blessing, a Milwaukee native who served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946. He was stationed in England, France, and Switzerland in 1945-1946 and served as a radio/teletype operator. The collection is made up of photocopies of three memoirs written by Blessing entitled Coming of Age in the 1930's, A Yank on the Homefront, 1943-1945, and A Yank Abroad, 1945-1946. Blessing wrote frequently during his enlistment to family and friends in Milwaukee and kept many diaries. Included with the collection is the original correspondence and diaries as well as typed transcripts. It is principally from these transcripts that the memoirs were derived. |

Jenkerson (1945-2002) was a lifelong La Crosse, Wis., resident and local historian who had a passion for photography, printing, and local history. He was a frequent visitor to estate sales and auctions in the area. This collection of slides was among the items sold at auction after his death. Generally, the slides were taken by unknown people over a long period of time and were likely purchased by Jenkerson locally. Most images are of the La Crosse area but are generally not identified and some are not dated. The collection is arranged by alphabetically by subject. Larger categories include bridges, circus events, parades, farm and country scenes, and the river. |

Call Number: WVM Mss 106 Abstract: Papers and photographs of Kenneth Zerwekh (a.k.a. Zerwick), an officer in the 3546th Ordnance Medium Automotive Maintenance Company who served in Europe during World War II. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence between Kenneth and his family during his World War II military service in Europe. Zerwekh, very conscious of Army censors, stayed away from writing specifically about troop movements and armed engagements. Instead, he focused on non-military topics like his collection of “spoils of war,” traveling and camp life. Several of Zerwekh's wartime letters include mention of General George S. Patton, the work of the First Army, and the celebrations that took place after VE Day. Also includes his military records, a unit history of the 3546th Ordnance Medium Automotive Maintenance Company, and items that Zerwekh picked up during his military service in Europe, such as two Nazi-themed postcards. Materials not directly related to the war include correspondence from Kenneth's European vacation in 1929 and his collegiate career at Georgia Tech during the 1930's, a map of Zerwekh's route through the British Isles and souvenirs from his European vacation, and some of his exams from the Georgia Institute of Technology. The photographs include many scenic shots of European locales, as well as wartime pictures of Zerwekh, both alone and with men from his company. Also included in the collection is a photograph of a Grand Army of the Republic parade in which Zerwekh's uncle, Herman Smythe, reportedly took part. |

The records consist primarily of scrapbooks of newspaper clippings which document press coverage of the organization and its activities but also include annual reports, brochures, mental health treatment program materials and the organization’s constitution and articles of incorporation.
