Biography/History

Norma Lang received her BSN (1961) from Alverno College and both her MSN (1963) and her PhD (1974) from Marquette University. Lang is a former Dean of the UWM School of Nursing (1980-1992) and of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.

Lang is a pioneer in the field of quality assurance in nursing and led the development of a groundbreaking international classification system. Lang is a UW System Distinguished Professor and is the recipient of numerous awards for her work. She holds honorary degrees from the State University of New York (1996) and Marquette (2001).

Lang has held leadership positions with the American Nurses Association, American Academy of Nursing, American Association of Colleges of Nursing, and the Institute of Medicine.
