professor and dean. The papers largely document Lang's career, including her involvement in
numerous professional healthcare organizations. Materials include presentations at meetings
and conferences, consultation work, publications and papers, teaching materials, news

Biography/History
Norma Lang received her BSN (1961) from Alverno College and both her MSN (1963) and her PhD
(1974) from Marquette University. Lang is a former Dean of the UWM School of Nursing
(1980-1992) and of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.
Lang is a pioneer in the field of quality assurance in nursing and led the development of a
groundbreaking international classification system. Lang is a UW System Distinguished
Professor and is the recipient of numerous awards for her work. She holds honorary degrees
from the State University of New York (1996) and Marquette (2001).
Lang has held leadership positions with the American Nurses Association, American Academy
of Nursing, American Association of Colleges of Nursing, and the Institute of Medicine.
Scope and Content Note
This collection documents Lang's distinguished nursing career. Included are materials
documenting her work with numerous healthcare organizations including the American Nurses
Association, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, the American Medical Peer
Review Association, and the Institute of Medicine. The collection contains meeting and
presentation materials, publications, news clippings, and consultation materials documenting
her work on nursing standards, effectiveness initiatives, classification of nursing
practice, social policy, and databases, as well as materials from her work with colleague
Harriet Werley to establish nursing minimum data sets. The collection also includes teaching
materials, information about awards received, some photographs, and an audio cassette of a
1991 Wisconsin Public Radio interview discussing Wisconsin's nursing shortage. Addition
includes information about the ACW (Aurora-Cerner-UWM) partnership, the Knowledge Based
Nursing Initiative (KBNI) project, and further presentations and awards.
Arrangement of the Materials
Materials are arranged by subject at the box level.
This collection was recieved in, and is organized in, multiple parts. Additional materials
have not been physically or intellectually arranged and interfiled, and researchers may need
to consult more than one part of the collection to locate similar materials.

There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all
members of the public in accordance with state law.

Norma Lang donated the bulk of the collection in May 2004 (accession 2003-084),
additional materials in September 2014 (accession 2014-021), and additional materials in
June 2020 (2021-022).
Christel Maass began processing the collection in October 2015 and completed the
processing in August 2016. Per Lang's notes, the ANA lost some of its archives in its move
from Kansas City to Washington DC; therefore Lang's copies of these materials were
retained in this collection. Lauran minimally processed 2021-022 in June 2022.
