Abstract: Financial records of the Rice Lake Area School District, together with district clerk's records of various rural schools in Barron County, Wisconsin, that were consolidated into the Rice Lake school system. Several of these predecessor school districts included parts of the Towns of Long Lake and Sarona in Washburn County. About the Rice Lake Area district itself there are no minutes or administrative records, although the series does provide detailed information about revenue and expenditures, 1887-1934. The predecessor schools are documented solely by official clerk's records including minutes, financial statements, and occasional teacher contracts. There are no records about individual students.

Abstract: Mainly records of business enterprises engaged in by three brothers, A. J., H. H., and Martin Rich, onetime residents of Horicon, Wisconsin. Three letterbooks, 1874-1882, contain outgoing letters from the Ontonagon, Michigan, office of their firm, which manufactured lumber and shingles and dealt in general merchandise in Wisconsin and Michigan. Two volumes of financial records include a ledger, 1857-1858, for Rich and Roper Livery in Horicon; journal entries, 1864-65, for Rich Brothers' general merchandise store in Horicon; and personal accounts, 1860-1868, of H. H. Rich. The bulk of the final volume consists of financial records of the Horicon Windmill Company, 1874-1895, but a few pages contain sales records kept by an unidentified merchant dealing in iron, lumber, and other products in Southport (Kenosha) in 1846-1847.

Abstract: Papers of attorney Richard Krooth and his wife, Ann Baxandall Krooth, both of whom were social activists in the 1960s. Most of the materials were collected or created by Richard Krooth during the course of his employment as Community Consultant for the Anti-Defamation League's Southeast regional office during 1963-1964. Rather than directly documenting the activities of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), this collection documents the issues that civil rights workers were concerned with: desegregation, discrimination, suffrage, community organizing, civil rights legislation, and right wing opposition groups. Additionally, there is a small amount of material related to the Madison Free University, a group organized in 1968 by Ann Baxandall Krooth and other students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in opposition to the traditional university model of education.

Abstract: The bulk of this collection consists of family papers from Richard and Ethel Herzfeld. Also included are materials pertaining to Milwaukee's Boston Store. The Boston Store materials include advertising, correspondence, items pertaining to a 1934-1935 strike, financial reports, newspaper clippings, lantern slides, stereographs, glass plate and nitrate negatives, and photographs. The family papers mainly consist of photographs and films of Richard and Ethel and their daughter Carol Ann, their homes, and travels. Correspondence, journals, family documents, and memorabilia are also included in the collection.

Abstract: Richard Boudreau taught in the English department at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse from 1968 until his retirement in 1994. Boudreau began his research on Wisconsin authors shortly after he started teaching at La Crosse. In 1986, Boudreau published his work Literary Heritage of Wisconsin, Volume I: Beginnings to 1925. The second volume of this series was published in 1995 and titled Literary Heritage of Wisconsin, Volume II, Part A: 1925-1960. Boudreau presented several radio programs from 1974-1985 through Wisconsin Public Radio including a radio course, "Wisconsin's Literary Heritage," that was offered through the University of Wisconsin Extension.

Abstract: Papers of Richard Critchfield, an author and foreign correspondent known for his coverage of Far Eastern events and reports on third world cultures and the impact on them of agricultural and technological change. Although the bulk of the papers consists of writings, the correspondence file contains important exchanges with his newspaper and book editors and personal correspondence with his family. There are also memoranda about events in Vietnam, exchanges with staff at the Alicia Patterson Fund which sponsored some of his research, and correspondence about political situations in the various countries which Critchfield studied. The collection contains substantial documentation on five books, The Long Charade: Political Subversion in the Vietnam War (1968), The Golden Bowl Be Broken: Peasant Life in Four Cultures (1973), Shahhat, An Egyptian (1978), Villages (1981), and Those Days: An American Album. Also in the collection are notes on interviews with Chester B. Bowles, John Kenneth Galbraith, Indira Gandhi, Ferdinand Marcos, Robert S. McNamara, Anwar Sadat, and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

Abstract: Letters written by Captain Richard E. Carter of Company I, 5th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, to his brother William and other family members in Grant County, Wisconsin during his Civil War service (1861-1865) as a quartermaster sergeant, captain, and acting quartermaster. Also included are two letters from William to Richard (1895, 1900) pertaining to these Civil War letters and family matters.

Abstract: Correspondence and business records of manufacturer Richard Emerson Ela of Rochester, Wisconsin. Early letters to his family describe his efforts to establish himself in the West and discuss land speculation, financial operations, and agricultural prospects. Later business correspondence is mainly incoming mail from his agents who sold the Ela fanning mills, wagons, carriages, plows, and other agricultural implements from town to town or from their own hardware stores, and from wholesale manufacturers and a few individual customers. Further details of his business are found in journals, ledgers, cash books, agents' sales books, inventories, lists of customers, and miscellaneous volumes from the firms of Richard E. Ela & Co. and Thompson & Ela. In addition, the collection includes letters written to Ela by two young friends, William W. S. Bliss and Henry L. Kendrick, between 1830 and 1837 which describe student life at the U.S. military academy at West Point.

Abstract: Photocopies from a scrapbook and memoir of Richard Elsner, an early champion of both the trade union and Socialist movements in Milwaukee. Born in Germany, Elsner came to Milwaukee in 1880 and became a pioneer in the Brewery Worker's Union, a veteran of the Socialist Party, an attorney, and was elected as a civil judge, register of deeds, and a member of the Wisconsin legislature. The papers include photocopies of family materials, writings by Elsner, miscellaneous articles, and photographs of Elsner and his family. Also included is an undated biography of Elsner written by Charlotte Bleistein.

Abstract: Papers of Richard Hanser, an award-winning writer of television documentaries, including biographical material and research, production information and publicity for the NBC series Victory at Sea, Project XX, and Wisdom. Documentation for Project XX is most complete; included are scripts and drafts, correspondence, press releases, reviews, 17 soundtrack recordings, and other production information for 24 episodes. Victory at Sea is represented by narrations for all 26 episodes, a script for a motion picture version of the series (UA, 1954), and material pertaining to a book by Hanser and producer Henry J. Salomon, Jr. Notes, scripts, and promotional material pertain to five programs of the Wisdom series. Among the interviewees are Oscar Hammerstein II, Margaret Mead, and Edward Steichen.

Abstract: Papers of an NBC News broadcaster best known for his coverage of the State Department and the White House. The collection primarily consists of radio and television news scripts, subject files, and research material and drafts relating to Valeriani's book on Henry Kissinger, Travels With Henry (1979). In addition to documentation of his work at the White House and the State Department, the radio and television news scripts cover the full range of Valeriani's reporting career including assignments in Cuba, Central America, and the South (covering the civil rights movement) for Emphasis, NBC Nightly News, and Today, and his work as Washington, D.C. anchor for the Today show. Subject files include copies of Valeriani's articles about Kissinger, interviews (including one with Paul Newman), a tape recording of Valeriani and Kissinger at a State Department Correspondents Association meeting, and numerous narrative expenditure statements.

Abstract: Papers of Richard Gross, a young community activist who served on the Madison, Wisconsin City Council, 1975-1977, as a representative of the 9th district central city area. Gross's participation in an ad hoc committee to select a site for the city bus barn and the controversy surrounding that selection are the best documented aspects of the papers. The files include correspondence, reports, minutes of meetings, resolutions introduced to the Council, and information on the Triangle and Bassett neighborhoods in the 9th district. The collection documents the leftist perspective Gross brought to national social issues as well as city matters and his collaboration with other central city alderpersons in efforts to protect the elderly, low-income, and student populations in downtown neighborhoods.

Abstract: Papers of Richard Halworth Rovere, a writer and editor known for his work on politics and current affairs for The New Yorker (1944-1978) and his book Senator Joe McCarthy. Best for the period from the late 1930s to the mid-1960s, the papers offer excellent material on Rovere's involvement with the Communist Party and on his writings, particularly those on McCarthyism and the Vietnam War. Especially well documented are seven books Rovere wrote and contributions to such periodicals as The New Masses, The New Yorker, Harper's, Encounter, and The (London) Spectator. Elsewhere in the collection are files on the Peace Corps in Kenya, the Ku Klux Klan, the American Committee for Cultural Freedom, and Thomas Dewey's 1944 Presidential campaign. Among many prominent correspondents are Arthur Schlesinger Jr., Granville Hicks, Irving Kristol, and Frederick Lewis Allen.

Abstract: Papers and photographs of Richard J. Johnson, a private in Company B of the 707th Tank Battalion, 7th Armored Division during World War II. The vast majority of the collection consists of the wartime correspondence among Johnson, his wife, and his parents. Johnson described his armored infantry training at Fort Lewis, Washington and his experiences at war in Europe to his family, while their responses described conditions on the family farm in Wisconsin and the growth and development of Johnson's daughter, Nancy. In one letter, written after U.S. Army censors lifted many restrictions, Johnson described his entire war experience, including his battalion's role in the Battle of the Bulge. A letter written by Arthur Orton, Johnson's cousin and a soldier in World War I, describes his experiences in a French hospital, mentions Johnson's parents, and comes with a YMCA Mother's Day flyer. The collection also includes military ephemera that Johnson picked up while overseas, special orders pertaining to Johnson, 7th Armored Division materials, and some war ration booklets. A large number of photographs detail Johnson's training at Fort Lewis, including many shots of himself and his fellow trainees. There are also photos from his service in Europe, three of which depict German prisoners of war, including some women, being led to a holding facility by Allied troops.

Abstract: Collection of papers and photographs, circa 1850-circa 1998, of Richard Vincent, a monument salesman for J.P. Vincent & Sons Monument Company in Galena, Illinois, whose territory covered northwest Illinois and southwest Wisconsin. Vincent's avocation was collecting historical information and photographs documenting the area, in particular lead mining and the communities in the lead-mining region, especially Galena, from the late 1800s to 1998 (bulk 1860-1940). For other communities, Vincent's research concentrates on local mining activities as well as the general history and tools of farming and railroads. The transparencies comprise the most important part of the collection and are accompanied by an index identifying each slide and, in the case of Galena, cross-referencing by subject.

Abstract: Papers of Richard Kaplan (1925-), a documentary film and television writer, director, and producer. Included in the manuscript collection are production and distribution files consisting of research notes, grant information, scripts, work logs, transcripts, reviews, publicity materials, and photographs. Also included are tape recordings, videotapes and film (including soundtracks) from his career, including the documentaries A Look at Liv and King: Montgomery to Memphis; television projects, including They Came for Good, on the history of Jews in the United States; and feature films, including projects on Varian Fry, an American journalist involved in the Emergency Rescue Committee (later known as the International Rescue Committee), which assisted refugees during World War II.

Abstract: Papers of Richard Koszarski related to the publication Film History: An International Journal. Koszarski founded Film History and edited its first twenty-four volumes from 1987 to 2012. The journal is known for considering external context like social and historical factors, instead of focusing on theoretical approaches or narrow analysis of films themselves. With Koszarski as editor, the journal published a wide variety of topics and featured the work of many notable scholars in the growing field. Includes correspondence from scholars who submitted to the journal, with some drafts and printed images, and from the editors of special issues. Also includes editorial correspondence, publicity, and the run of the first twenty-four journals.

Abstract: Papers of Richard Myers, a composer and producer of Broadway plays most prominently known for his collaboration with Richard Aldrich and Julius Fleischmann. Although best on the financial aspects of theatrical production, the papers also contain information on casting, costuming, lighting, and direction for the plays which Myers produced. In addition to financial records, the collection is comprised of contracts, correspondence, clippings, and some photographs and scripts. Documentation concerns The Moon Is Blue (1951), Goodbye, My Fancy (1949), The Innocents (1950), My Dear Children (1940), Plan M (1942, with Max Reinhardt and Norman Bel Geddes), and The Shrike (1952). Papers on the Cape Playhouse, which was operated by one of Myers' associates, are also present.

Abstract: Papers of Richard Quinney, a Marxist sociologist noted for his work on criminology whose later work reflected interests in the relationship of sociology to religion, regionalism, photography, and the concept of life studies. The records document his work as a student and teacher of sociology; his involvement in professional organizations such as the American Sociological Association and the Society for the Study of Social Problems; and the writing of numerous books and articles. Later writings reflect his time growing up in Walworth County (Wisconsin) which he recounts in For the Time Being (1998) as well as his experiences traveling through Europe and Asia which are related in Journey to a Far Place (1991). Also included are the photographs used in these last two publications which consist of photographs taken in Walworth County and DeKalb (Illinois) by Quinney and other family members during the 1920s and 1930s, as well as photographs of the locales in which he traveled. Additional photographs (available in digital format only) are from two other books by Quinney, Of Time and Place and Things Once Seen.

Abstract: Papers, 1953-2006, of Richard Schickel, an editor, film critic, and free-lance writer. The collection consists of scripts and drafts of writings; interviews and research for books, television and film including video, audio recordings and photographs; correspondence; and printed copies of books, articles, and reviews. Drafts of books include Lena (1965), The Opulent Era (1968), and The Disney Version (1968). Documentation for the last title is unusually complete and includes correspondence, research material on various Disney operations, and interviews with Walt Disney and members of his staff. Correspondence contains a few personal items and letters of reaction to his reviews and articles; among the prominent correspondents are Leonard Bernstein, Richard Burton, Alexander Calder, James T. Farrell, Fred W. Friendly, Jerry Lewis, Karl A. Menninger, Leontyne Price, Robert Redford, Peter Sellers, and Kurt Vonnegut. Abstract: Papers of a former Wisconsin congressman and his family, consisting of correspondence, speeches, certificates and official documents, clippings, a journal, and memorabilia. Guenther's papers consist of fragmentary political and diplomatic correspondence, handwritten and printed copies of speeches and remarks, certificates and official documents, biographical clippings, and memorabilia. Family material includes correspondence, clippings, and a journal of Alice Lillian Motz, Guenther's daughter, and her husband Eugen Motz, former Chilean vice-counsel to Mexico City. Of note are genealogical documents and a journal of uncertain authorship kept during the Mexican revolution, 1913-1915. There are isolated letters to Guenther from Susan B. Anthony, Benjamin Harrison, Jeremiah Rusk, Philetus Sawyer, and John Sherman and a letter from Guenther to his wife concerning a 1904 visit with Theodore Roosevelt.

Abstract: Documents and correspondence concerning Freedom of Information Act requests submitted by Richard Wallick to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS), National Organic Program (NOP), primarily related to inputs for USDA certified organic agricultural products. Wallick contended that some of these inputs were prohibited on the USDA National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances, and thus did not qualify for use in organic production. Wallick also pursued this issue in Wallick v. U.S. Department of Agriculture, Case No. CV-10-754 AC (D. Ore), a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court (District of Oregon).

Abstract: Papers of Richard J. (Rick) Phelps, a Wisconsin native, documenting his positions in public service and advocacy for social and legal justice for youth. These positions include Executive Secretary of the Governor’s Advocacy Committee for Children and Youth, a citizen’s committee to address public policy affecting families (1974-1975); head of the Office of the Wisconsin State Public Defender, a cabinet level agency (1983-1988); Dane County (Wisconsin) Executive (1988-1997); and founder and Executive Director of the Youth and Policy Law Center Inc., focusing on social and legal justice for children and at-risk families (1976-1983). Files also document his unsuccessful campaign in the 1989 primary for the 2nd Congressional District seat, and his instrumental role in the formation and passage of a major revision in the Wisconsin Children’s Code, Assembly Bill 874.

Abstract: Records of three civic committees concerned with hospital services in River Falls, Wisconsin. The River Falls Health Facilities Study Committee began meeting in January 1972 to study the feasibility of two hospitals continuing to operate in River Falls: the City Hospital and St. Joseph's Hospital. Consultants Glunz-Strathy Associates recommended merger of the two hospitals and purchase of St. Joseph's by the city with operations continuing in that facility. A Hospital Steering Committee began meeting in January 1975 to implement these recommendations and completed its work in September with organization of River Falls Area Hospital, Inc. which assumed responsibility for completing the merger. The third committee is the River Falls Area Hospital Capital Development Campaign Committee which began meeting in 1990 with the goal of raising one million dollars to finance a new hospital building. Included for the 1970s committees are meeting minutes; correspondence with state and local officials, consulting firms, and others; the report from Glunz-Strathy; newspaper articles; and by-laws and regulations of City Hospital and the new merged hospital. Minutes, mimeographed issue papers and planning documents, and a printed brochure are present for the 1990 committee.

Summary: The River Harvest Project surveyed mainly Upper Mississippi River commercial fishing, clamming, and duck hunting traditions in 1987, including custom wooden and aluminum flatboat building, wooden duckboat building and duck decoy carving, net-fishing, hoop-net knitting as well as fish pickling and smoking. Folklorist Janet C. Gilmore formally interviewed over half of the c. 30 commercial fishermen, fish marketers, and boat builders that she visited on both sides of the river in northeastern Iowa, southwestern Wisconsin, and northwestern Illinois. The survey led to presentations in Iowa and Illinois, photo exhibits at Highland Community College and the Dubuque County Historical Society Museum, as well as commercial fishing demonstrations at the Dubuque County museum in concert with other programming.
