Call Number: WVM Mss 1914
Abstract: Papers and photographs pertaining to the service of Rhoda Ann Ziesler, a Manitowoc, Wisconsin, resident who served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II, and was stationed on Oahu during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Papers include military orders and communications sent to Ziesler before, during, and after her service was completed, a diary, correspondence with friends and family, sound recordings and a large collection of newspaper clippings. Other manuscript materials include three scrapbooks created by Ziesler detailing her service as a nurse. Her collection also includes her acceptance into the Red Cross as a nurse and information about her membership and duties. Scrapbooks include letters, notes, orders, cards, souvenirs, and newspaper clippings. Scrapbooks cover her service and the service of friends from Wisconsin. Ziesler's diary details her journey from home to San Francisco, and then to Hawaii. Most interesting is her account of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Ziesler was stationed at Schofield Barracks Army Hospital, about 20 miles from Pearl Harbor on Oahu, and was working the morning of the attack. Her account of the day is featured in news stories as well as her personal diaries. Many letters from family and friends express concern for her well-being due to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. A telegram sent by Ziesler to her parents on December 9th, simply stating “Well and Safe,” is the subject of much discussion in letters and newspaper articles. Sound recordings are of Ziesler and others on a radio program called “Hawaii Calls”, on which she tells her family how much she misses them. Other “Hawaii Calls” recordings have similar messages from three servicemen from Wisconsin. Additional records include friends and family saying goodbye to Ziesler on her way to Hawaii and two records of Ziesler sending recorded messages to her family while stationed in Michigan. One of these records includes a friend from home, Evelyn, who was visiting Zielser at the time. Photographs in the collection include many images of Fort Custer, Michigan, where she had been stationed, Camp Claiborne, Louisiana, where she briefly served, and Hawaii. Images feature scenery, tourist photographs of towns and camps as well as Ziesler and fellow nurses.
