Abstract: Papers of Spaulding, a lumberman from Black River Falls, Wisconsin, and an official of Jackson County, Wisconsin. The collection consists mainly of incoming letters, 1856-1875, containing information on Spaulding's lumber business in Iowa, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Wisconsin. Other papers pertain to his operation in Wisconsin of a sawmill, flour mills, a sash, door, and blind factory, a blacksmith shop, and retail stores. Some letters indicate his interests in railroads, farms, and the importation of tobacco. A few papers relate to his work as clerk of the Board of Supervisors of Jackson County, clerk of the circuit court, and contractor for the boarding, lodging, and transportation of Civil War troops in the area. A few papers of his father, Jacob Spaulding, founder of Black River Falls, are included in the collection.

Abstract: Papers and photographs of Duke E. Jones, an officer with the Army and Army Reserves who served overseas in both World Wars and Korea and worked in military education between wars. The papers include mostly correspondence and military papers, which cover both his service and his involvement in veterans' organizations. The correspondence includes V-mails from soldiers in World War II and thank-you notes from Korean soldiers, as well as letters exchanged with fellow veterans after his retirement. The military papers fill in the details of his thirty-seven year military career, describing promotions, awards, and movements. Three autograph books contain well wishes from hundreds of men and women that he met in the service. Programs and mailings document his involvement in veterans' organizations, especially the Reserve Officers Association (ROA). Photographs also cover both military and veteran activities. Many photographs are from Korea, where Jones served as the commanding officer of a prisoner of war camp and headquarters commandant for the Eighth U.S. Army, Korea (EUSAK). These photos show an officer's view of the conflict featuring formal dinners and ceremonies. Group shots show several military units with which Jones served and photographs from the reunions of several different veterans' organizations, particularly the ROA, depict retired soldiers fraternizing.

Abstract: Transcripts of interviews conducted in 1998 and 1999 for the documentary Through One City's Eyes: Race Relations in America's Heartland, produced by The Duncan Group in association with Milwaukee Public Television and Wisconsin Public Radio. Interviewees discuss race relations in Milwaukee during the civil rights movement, as well as contemporary city issues. Also included is a brief description of the program and a few newspaper articles about the documentary.

Abstract: Records of a Dunn County institution originally founded as the Dunn County Asylum for the Chronic Insane (1892) and the Dunn County Poor House (later known as the Dunn County Home). During the 1940s, the two institutions became the Dunn County Hospital and Home. In 1972, a new facility that included a nursing home and a psychiatric unit was opened under the name Dunn County Heath Care Center. The records primarily document the institutions' financial history. Included are unpublished annual reports, audit reports by the Wisconsin Tax Commission, and reimbursement bills submitted to the state and other counties. Patient records primarily consist of lists of original residents of the asylum, residents from the 1930s and 1940s, and a population movement book, 1955-1970, although additional information about individual patients is included in other records in the series. Miscellaneous records include minutes of the original asylum building commission (which included J. H. Stout and A. R. Hall), architectural plans and photographs, brochures, employee rules and lists, property inventories, a patient diary dated 1915-1916, a journal of crops raised, and leases.

Abstract: Volumes indicating land ownership and a description of taxable real estate, valuation of each parcel, taxes due, and a record of the payment of taxes. Also includes valuations, taxes due, and taxes paid for personal property in many of the volumes. Tax rolls are arranged alphabetically by township and thereunder chronologically. Cities and villages are arranged alphabetically under the appropriate township. Records for 1864-1949 are available only on microfilm.

Abstract: Business records of a Superior, Wis. firm which manufactured and sold farm water supply items including windmills, steel towers, iron pumps, and water tanks. A windmill which could pump water and grind grain at the same time was patented in 1882 and designated “duplex” by the Lake City Tool Co., Madison, Wis. In 1885, the firm was purchased by the Andrew brothers and moved to Brooklyn, Wis. under the name Duplex Windmill Co. The company was re-established in Superior in 1892 with the name Duplex Manufacturing Co. The collection consists of scattered correspondence; letterbooks; an invoice book; scattered historical materials; written recollections of company president Homer L. Andrew, Delphin M. Johnson, and William M. Spencer; materials concerning company ownership and stocks; and seven product catalogs.

Abstract: Diaries kept from 1851 to 1893 by Cheever, recording his emigration from Vermont to Wisconsin, his speculative ventures in lands, and financial arrangements leading to large scale and varied farm and stockbreeding operations at Clinton, Wis. An active member of the Republican Party, he held many local offices. He invested in railroad and mining stock, and was an organizer and officer in the Clinton cheese factory. The diaries touch upon all these activities, as well as personal and family matters, school and church affairs, anti-slavery sentiment, and his attitude towards immigrant workers. Besides the diaries, there are lists of town officers and town taxes, 1842-1876, notes on local events, and 1863 records of the Union League of America, Clinton Council. With these are letters from members of the Cheever and Grow families and friends, 1842-1856, mainly in and about Hardwick, Vermont, dealing with family matters and exchange of advice on educational methods, and some Civil War letters. Also present is a volunteer enrollment book, 1863.

Abstract: Papers of Johnsrud, a Republican Wisconsin State Assemblyman from the 96th district from 1984 to 2004. Most of the papers stem from his work on the Natural Resources Committee and consist of drafts of bills and amendments, reference materials, press releases and news clippings, and correspondence. The files particularly concern water quality, land use, hunting and fishing regulations, and controlling health care costs. Specific legislation documented includes mandating double hulled barges on the upper Mississippi river, limiting non-point source pollution of rivers and streams, regulating the use of septic tanks, restricting nude bathing at the Mazomanie beach, lowering blood-alcohol and speed limits on snowmobiles, regulating the Petroleum Environmental Cleanup Fund Act (PECFA), protecting wetland, managing the state's deer herd, the prohibition of deer baiting, permitting dove hunting, increasing hunting opportunities for people with disabilities, and making the Wisconsin Constitution gender neutral.
