The University, beginning with the administration of President Chamberlin, has steadily gathered momentum. Each stage of its development has pointed to ever increasing vigor and broader usefulness. Some lines of its development demand special notice.

The problem of every higher institution of learning is at first to establish adequate fitting schools. The system of accredited high schools and academies established by President Bascom, was carefully fostered by President Chamberlin; and in 1892 there were 100 schools accredited by the University. In the past decade this number has more than doubled.
