The TWUA records include papers of two predecessor organizations (the UTW and the TWOC),
the TWUA international office, the Quin State Regional office (Newark, New Jersey), the New
York State Director's office, and the New Jersey State Director's office. The processed
portions of the collection (Parts 1-3) were received and organized in three distinct
installments and consequently the dates and contents of the installments tend to overlap.
For example, Research Division files are found in all three installments, and the records
documenting Emil Rieve's terms as president are divided between installments one and
three.
The initial installment was processed about 1966 and consists of 293 archives boxes, 7
reels of microfilm, and 9 disc recordings. It contains TWOC records, 1934-1939;
international office files, 1937-1962, including records of conventions, the Executive
Council, the Office of the President, the Dyers Federation, and the Research, Education,
Publications, and Organizing Departments and Divisions; the New York State Directors' files,
1943-1956; and the Quin State Regional office records, 1951-1961. It includes call numbers
U.S. Mss 129A, Micro 192, and Audio 1524A/Disc 55A.
Records in Installment Two were received between 1967 and 1969 and organized in 1970. They
consist of 140 archives boxes of employer reference files and expired contracts from the
Research Division, and date 1937-1964. Installment Two is assigned call number Mss 87.
Installment Three includes records received since 1970 and is the largest segment of the
collection, totaling 698 cartons and 18 reels of microfilm. It contains records of the UTW,
1915-1939; the TWUA international office, 1937-1976, including extensive files of the
Executive Council, Office of the President, Office of the Secretary-Treasurer, and nearly
all TWUA divisions and departments; records of the New York State Director's office,
1940-1974; and files of the New Jersey State Director's office, 1949-1951. Installment Three
has received only preliminary sorting and organizing. Consequently, some series are split
between various segments of the installment and series descriptions are not as detailed as
those for the first two installments. Call numbers for Installment Three are Mss 396, Micro
631, and Micro 770.
