Madison Committee to End the War in Vietnam Records, 1965-1971

Biography/History

The Madison Committee to End the War in Vietnam (CEWV) was founded in 1965 in response to the United States bombing of Haiphong, North Vietnam. The group's purpose was to initiate, sponsor, and carry out educational and political activities designed to arouse public pressure and action, and thereby ultimately to achieve the withdrawal of the United States from Vietnam. To this end the Committee sponsored local marches, demonstrations, films, talks, and workshops, and participated in national conferences and marches. It became aligned with the national Student Mobilization Committee in 1967 and formally changed its name to the U.W. Student Mobilization Committee in the early fall of 1969.
